IMac 27" pick up

Hey guys out there,
isn't it possible ( - with the Apple Care Protection Plan - ) that Apple pick up my iMac at home?
I've got an problem with the display and/or the graphic boar - my display is darker on the left side, than on the right side.
So is a pick up possible? I live in germany.

  • IMac not picking up external hardwares

Recently, probably started a week ago when I started using MobileMe sync, my iMac stop picking up external hardwares even if they are connected. For example, my iPod and external hard drives are plugged in to iMac via firewire but they don't show on the screen.
The bizarre thing is, if I restarted my computer or shut down then restart, the hardwares appeared. When I disconnect them and reconnect, they wouldn't show up the second time. I called tech support and they said it may be a software issue.
Is there a command I can use to actively search for connected wares or is it a glitch?

Same thing here with my maxtor after using it for 3 years with no problems. Started with a error message of "improper device removal". Went on for a few days. Then it wouldn't mount. I go to "about this computer"/ more info / devices/ firewire and it says unknown device. Attached to an emac on my network and same results. Attached it to my old manapua mac at home, and it works great. Brought in another Maxtor from home and back to square 1, unknown device. Is my Intel based imac eating up my external hard drives?? It also destroyed 2 different iomegas, said I had to reformat. is there a drive reader program that will fix this issue?

  • IMac mini displayport blank display on boot

I work in a school and we use iMacs as classroom machines for teachers. The iMacs are plugged in to vga projectors and are setup to clone in Windows. This worked fine on all our iMacs with mini dvi ports. We've just bought two lots of new iMacs with mini displayport connectors. The first lot came requiring a firmware update, the second lot were already up to date. The first lot seem to have issues where they forget that the projector is connected. The only way to get them to recognise the projector again is to unplug and replug the adaptor. This is a minor annoyance but tolerable - although the old dvi port iMacs just pick up the projector and adjust the resolution automatically. The second lot which came with the most recent firmware pre-installed seem to get stuck booting Windows when the displayport to vga adaptor is plugged in. It gets to the black screen (before the Windows logo appears) and then stops. Pressing enter seems to get it past this and continue the boot process - as if it needs some kind of user input. This is more of an annoyance because it makes doing updates remotely which require a reboot impossible and expecting staff to remember to boot their computers without the adaptor plugged in seems a bit ridiculous. I've tried updating to the latest NVIDIA drivers but the problem persists. Has anybody experienced this and does anybody have a solution?

So this is weird, playing around with the brightness controls seems to have fixed the problem - And yes I did try that yesterday but for some reason today that did the trick.

  • Mac Mail updated, lost all my emails, iPhone gets emails, iMac doesn't.

    Hi
I booted my mac which seemed to do some kind of update (this was a few days ago) and mac mail was also updated. However it lost one of my email accounts during the process and all my sent items are gone. I can still find them using spotlight but they dont appear in mail anymore.
What is also strange is that my iPhone is collecting new emails from my pop account (set to leave emails on server) but the iMac never picks these emails up. Its like the iPhone is removing them from the server regardless of settings. I disabled the iphone from collecting email but the iMac doesnt get them still.
The account settings seem ok and I can send emails using these accounts.
    So,
    1. Why is my iMac not collecting pop based emails that the iPhone gets from the same account?
    2. How to i put all the sent emails back into Mac Mail from the hard drive? And where are they?
    Thanks for any help.

Hello and welcome to the Discussions.
From what level of OXS and Mail would it have been updating from?
In the Finder, open Home/Library/Mail -- is there only one POP account folder related to this account? Open this POP account folder -- do you see the Sent Message.mbox folder? Does it contain only one Info.plist file and one Messages folder?
Were it not for the failure to receive new messages, I would simply recommend to Rebuild the Sent mailbox, but I think more than that might be needed.

  • If I have my iMac internet sharing turned on, the Airport Utility won't recognize the Airport Express I want to use to stream iTunes to my stereo.  When I turn the iMac internet sharing off, the Airport Express appears but calls itself a base station.

If I have my iMac internet sharing turned on, the Airport Utility won't recognize the Airport Express I want to use to stream iTunes to my stereo.  When I turn the iMac internet sharing off, the Airport Express appears but calls itself a base station.  I just bought the Airport Express and it's not clear how I should set up my System Preferences for Sharing.  Thx

Yes. Unfortunately the stereo is too far from the wired ethernet connection   My iMac is connected to the internet using an ethernet cable from the DSL modem (plugged into the wall, not wireless).  The Airport Express is plugged into an outlet 25' away from the iMac and connected to my speakers.  I've turned on the iMac Airport wireless Internet Sharing, hoping to stream iTunes to the Express connected to the stereo.  The iMac Airport picks up several neighborhood networks so I know it's working (and I connected my iPhone wifi to it just to check as well).
When I use Airport Utility to set up the Express, the only time Utility recognizes the Express is when the iMac Airport is off.  When I turn on the iMac Airport, the Airport Utility immediately loses the Express and asks to rescan.
Maybe that explains my problem better.

  • Getting the most from my iMac

    Hi everyone,
I've had my iMac for almost 2 months now, just switched from windows, and of course on windows you can defrag the hard drive and check for errors and so on. My question is, do you have to do that on a Mac? I want my machine to run the absolute best that it can all the time and it seems that lately it's been slowing down a little. I've added a few apps and such but nothing big. So, if there is a way that I can make sure everything is clean and running at peak performance I would love to know how to do that, step by step. I'm very nervous about doing anything with the disk because I don't know what I'm doing. I'm very confident with windows but not Mac. If someone could help that would be awesome. Thanks, these forums are great!!

If you are making the transition from Windows to OS you just have to remember that everything is much easier on a mac. What you are looking for is Repair Disk Permissions in your Utility folder. I click this before and after I install ANYTHING, including updates. It keeps everything running smooth and takes about 4 seconds.
I had been away from Macs for years and I like Windows and Macs. When I bought the Imac I picked up a handbook on OSX Tiger. I figured if I just spent a couple thousand on a computer another $30.00 was a small price to pay. I can tell you that it has already prevented me from making mistakes.

  • Can't even get my iMac and don't know why

It is fairly impossible for me to find a forum that matches my particular issue. I thought maybe someone here could help me.
I was attempting to order a refurbished iMac from the apple.com/ca/ as I live in Canada. I don't have much money so any little bit helps and the $200 savings meant I could actually afford to replace my aging G4 Mac mini. The refurbished iMac I picked out was quoted online at $1099 canadian, the same unit is $999 on the American site. When I placed my order including all recycling fees and shipping I was quoted $1156 and with my tax rate that came to $1213.80. Which was just enough for me to afford. I was going to finally get that new iMac I've longed for. Sadly my order was declined. I promptly contacted my bank to find out what had gone they informed I had been charged $1346 because of exchange rate on the order I was making. Exchange rate on a price quoted in Canadian dollars??? I then contacted Apple sales by phone and told them my issue and they informed that all those prices are in Canadian funds and they too tried to place my order and once again it was declined and no one not the rep I was talking to not his support staff could explain why apple was charging an exchange rate on something that is clearly advertised in Canadian Dollars. In fact if this is an accurate cost it would mean that Apple is selling me a refurbished computer at the cost of a brand new Apple Computer but how am I even to trust that price to be accurate too. I feel deeply wronged here and lied to.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Unfortunately, this is a user to user technical help forum. This is not a site where you make contact with Apple. Nor is there anything that any of us here can do to change this.
What bank? Is this a Canadian or US bank?

  • IMacs won't connect to the internet through a Double Router Network.

    Hey guys,
I have 4 computers in the house, 1 is an XP system, 2 are iMacs running latest version of Leopard, the last is my Macbook Pro running latest Snow Leopard. The reason for the two router solution is as follows: The connection where the modem and router were previously was unable to broadcast a signal to the other side of the house (concrete). So I placed a wired router on the end where the modem is, and through cat cables placed in the walls, placed a wireless router on the other side of the house.
I have already set up the wireless router to become a wireless access point by turning the operating mode to router instead of gateway, and changed the internal ip to 192.168.2.x. All in all my macbook connects to the internet just fine through the router now turned access point and picks up the IP of 192.168.1.x (from the wired router directly connected to the modem), but the iMacs are picking up 192.168.2.x ips which have no connection to the internet.
I have tried to renew the DHCP lease (which should pull the 192.168.1.x since the wireless router has DHCP turned off) but it still wants to connect to 192.168.2.x. Any ideas or solutions to fix this?

hi i have read your problem but i can be wrong... because suppose to be your system have working before. i think can exist conflicts between modem ip address and router ip address. first disconnect your modem from your router put in your internet explorer 192.168.1.1 and if your router has password live user name area in blank. and put in password area admin and push return. when appear the setup menu ( must to be in basic setup menu by default) search the text Local IP Address 192.168.1.1 and let change for 192.168.2.1 and do click in save settings button turn off your modem your router and connect everything and turn on them. check if you get access internet service.

  • IMac microphone not working in applications

    Hi all,
For the last few months my iMac's microphone has stopped working in applications (rather annoying when I am away from home and want to Skype friends and family!) I have configured the microphone numerous times and the iMac itself picks up my voice and commands. However, when I am on Skype or other external applications, the other side cannot hear anything I say. I have tried to do the Skype test call, my microphone isn't picked up there either, so it is definitely my microphone not their sound.
    Please can anyone help me?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Mail-Gmail-Imap problems on an imac

I have 3 email accounts all feeding an Ipad, iPhone 5 and an iMac.  One of those 3 accounts is an imap gmail account.  I have set up all 3 devices and the iPhone and iPad pick up all three just fine.  The iMac intermittently picks up the gmail mail.  I can not find a pattern to when it picks it up and it doesn't.  The mail client will pick up the mail if I maunally sync using the synchronize on the messages pulldown.  It will not do so if I hit the get mail button or use the get all mail command in the messages pull down menu.  It also will not pull the mail automatically on a consistent basis even if I have it poll every minute.
Any ideas how to fix this.
    thank you in advance.

Wifi problems seem to crop up a lot on here and unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a 'one fix' solution.
However, sometimes any one of the following can help although, unfortunately, not always - in no particular order:
Check wifi security - if it's WEP change it to WPA or WPA2 (preferably, as it's more secure)
Change the wifi channel on the router
Create a new Network Location: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5289
    Reboot the router
Also take a look at this link and the links within the article for other ideas. They mainly reference Lion, but still seem to be relevant to Mountain Lion:

  • Setting up a new imac g5 for wireless internet.

I have recently brought a new imac g5 and want to set it up by wireless internet.
My dad lives 2 doors down from me and has a pc with broadband and i was wondering if i could use his broadband by setting up my mac with wireless.
What would i need to do this and would it matter that he has a pc.
iMac 20" 2GHz intel core duo   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I'm not too sure about the iMac but I know my laptops can pick up wifi signals that are a good 1/2 mile away, in the City of Baltimore for example, with my laptop, I can pickup 4 - 6 signals from my Studio, obviously most of them are protected (secured) signals, and I know for a fact there are not 6 people around me running independent wireless broad band within a few houses.
It really all depends on how strong a signal the router can put out and how good the iMac can pick up. 2 houses is not very far away here in the US in regards to acquiring a signal... your dad is going to have to set up the router in a window facing your place and you will have to set up to a window nearest his place, if you can pick up a signal but is weak then try the 'signal booster'... Good luck, Rick

  • IMac DV won't power up

My iMac DV 400 won't power up. When I press the power button, the light comes on for a second or so, and I can faintly hear the drive start to spin up but then before the computer is able to check any other hardware, before it makes the standard "bong" sound, it just shuts off. I can hear it make a faint clicking sound just before it shuts off. Sounds like a switch is opening. If I press the power button again, nothing happens. I have to unplug the computer and plug it back in to try to power up again, but it just does the same thing.
The computer is plugged directly into the wall (not through a ups or any other device). I tried with a different power cord, but no impact.
Any ideas for what to do to correct this problem?

I have heard reports suggesting that a problematic PMMU can cause the logic board battery to run down in a matter of days. At least, I recall an Apple Knowledgebase article about Power Mac G4's that said a crashed PMMU, if left in that state, drains battery in 4-6 days. I don't know if this applies to the iMac, but logic board batteries are cheap and worth a try.
If you have already updated the firmware for OS X, then there is no need to do it again. The current firmware updater is the one that's posted to Apple's site. It has not changed since 2001.
You can try the usual things that people try when machines don't power on: reseat RAM, swap out RAM, remove and reinstall the logic board, blow on it, whack it, dust it (not with a vacuum -- with canned air), check connections, check fuses on the analog board, disconnect all drives, replace the drive with a test one to see if the drive is the problem, etc.
If these are not the problem, you can repeat some steps (to see if it is an intermittant fault). Otherwise, you will need to download the appropriate service manual from this page:
    http://www.whoopis.com/computer_repair/
Detailed therein is the way in which you can test (using a voltmeter, and with extreme care) whether the analog board/the power supply are good. Conducting this test will require you to have the machine powered on and will put you inches away from 26kV of voltage used to drive the CRT (at the back of the tube and on some of the components). Personally, I have never done this because I consider it too risky. If you are experienced with electronics, go ahead, otherwise I'd wait until someone else on the forum take a look at this and suggest things that I might have missed.
Based on what you said though -- clicking sounds, and power off shortly after powering up, I am guessing an internal short somewhere is causing a safety mechanism to trip out and power down your computer, esp. when it will ignore the power button. Check for a loose screw (pick it up and jiggle it, do you hear a loose part?) Check for things that might be causing a short. If you don't see anything obvious then it might be a component failure (specifically, a capacitor, a chip, or the flyback transformer we talked about earlier) that is causing the shorts. Tracing component-level faults in an iMac is beyond my technical expertise.
The iMac I picked up curbside has a screw loose. So far I haven't been able to find it, but it isn't causing any shorts, so I just left it.

  • Why is the AEBS bottlenecking my ReadyNAS devices leading to bad packets and TCP Retransmits?

Bad Packets Unrecovered TCP Retransmits TCP Retransmits w ReadyNAS NV NV+ and Airport Extreme Base Station 5th Generation
I got an Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS), 5th generation this past November to bring my entire network up to gigE standards and extend my wireless range a bit. I have really liked the AEBS 5th Gen overall since I got it 3 months ago. It was easy to setup and update and things have been noticeably faster. I can also easily take my netbook, laptop, and iPad out to my shop some 80 feet away from my AEBS and still surf rather well wirelessly too. I couldn't do this even with my previous D-Link wireless-n setup.
In December I picked up an old ReadyNAS NV+ to go along with my old ReadyNAS NV. When I finally started to setup the new network for my business in February, I noticed in the logs that I was getting a large numbers of bad packets, TCP retransmits, and unrecovered TCP retransmits. Previously, I had never had errors of any sort with any older network setups using linksys, dlink and netgear routers during the last 6 years.
Eventually cables, switches, and routers can go bad which results in the errors I have been getting so I went through the "Troubleshoot My Performance Problem/Check for Network Errors" section of the link below to try and figure out what was causing my problem.
    My Initial Setup:
    Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS):
    - 1 incoming Cat5e from Motorola Surfboard 6120,
    - 2 Cat5e connections to my wifes work network with her business computer and VOIP phone.
    - 1 Cat 5e interconnecting the AEBS to my wired network on the HP Procurve Switch.
The AEBS manages addresses via DHCP on my wired network for all of my devices on the HP Procurve 14008G Switch:
    - 1 to NV
    - 1 NV+
    - 1 MacMini 2010
    - 1 MacMini 2005
    - 1 networked Epson R-3000 printer
    1. Simple things first. Since I have always made all my own Cat 5e cable I figured I'd better get some better(?) cabling strait away. I went ordered new Cat 6 and Cat 6a cables to connect the NV, NV+, and my main Mac to the switch and connect the switch to the AEBS. The errors kept coming.
    2. Then I separately connected each NAS unit directly to my computer by setting up the static IP on my computer first. Once I reconnected each ReadyNAS with the computer directly they defaulted to a static IP.  Neither NAS had errors.
    3. Errors were coming from either a bad Procurve 1400 switch or a bad AEBS. I hooked everything directly to my Airport Extreme and got lots of errors.
    4. I decided to check the switch also. I altered each ReadyNAS's default static IP to one of my choosing individually. Then I hooked both ReadyNAS units to my HP Procurve 1400 switch. I hooked the switch directly to my computer and got no errors from either NAS. I continue to get no errors the next day.
    5. When I first ran my tests I had Jumbo Frames turned Off. Currently, Jumbo Frames are On and there are still no errors and seems to be no slowness either.
    Conclusion:
The Airport Extreme is the bottleneck causing the errors in my network.
Perhaps there is something I can alter which will rid me of the errors, but this type of error makes the AE seem to be pretty shoddy. A newer state-of-the-art router should not be bottlenecking my rather archaic slow network devices. Apparently, the 4th Gen AEBS's couldn't do Jumbo Frames, but this current model is supposed to, but I see no setting for changing the MTU.
    Questions:
What could be causing the bottleneck?
Do I have a bad router?
How could I analyze this problem?
Has anyone else had similar issues and if so how were they resolved?
    Current Setup:
All of my computers and NAS devices are hooked to my Procurve Switch each with its own Static IP.
The switch is working flawlessly with no Errors.
The network printer is now wireless and  connected via the AEBS.
I am using wireless-n to connect to internet via the AEBS on my main machine.
I am sharing the internet connection with the other Mac Mini on the switch and any other machine I plug into the switch (not ideal).
    Problem is:
I am not a systems administrator and don't really want to tinker with setting up Static IP's for the machines I hook and unhook to the switch.
I want the AEBS to manage addresses via DHCP so everything accessing my router will mindlessly be able to access all things on my network.
Can the AEBS be made to not produce errors or do I just have a lemon.

    Hi Bob,
That's the strange thing. When I had both GHz channels working on one SSID, once in a while my iMAC would pick the 5 GHz channel (44 seems the best for me). I always use channel 1 for 2.4 GHz because I get the fastest speeds with it.
When the iMac would pick 5 GHz, the slowdown was very obvious. As I explained in my (long) first post, I immediately felt the difference. Now the $50K question - since the 5 GHz channel at that point was stronger than the 2.4 GHz one, why wasn't the speed faster? Why was it so slow compared to 2.4 GHz? That's what rattling my brain. If the 5 GHz signal's strong enough to get picked by my iMac, then why isn't there a commensurate speed increase? There must be something else going on here besides signal strength. If the 5 GHz spec says that I must have full strength to get 5 GHz speeds, then that makes sense. But I think it doesn't, that's why I believe I have a configuration problem somewhere, or a faulty AEBS.
I might add that my firmware's up-to-date in the AEBS and AX, and Airport Utility too.
I think heading to 4Runner's camp - even with high signal strength (and I would consider 3 of 4 bars high), the 5 GHz speeds aren't showing themselves.
    Here's some snap's of my AEBX's setup:
I think my configuration's fine, although I've tried so many different options, I'm a little confused, but I know that changing the Multicast Rate doesn't have any noticeable effect on the speed. I also have "Use Wide Channels" checked, but as I said, the 5 GHz band is awfully slow for using both channels. I have set "N" only, so no "G" clients to slow it down.
    Mind boggling!

  • Why is my 2.4 GHz network 2.5X faster than my 5 GHz one?

When I got my dual band AEBS last year, i was thrilled to be able to take advantage of the 802.11n 5 GHz band. I'd read about folks getting ethernet thruput, and with my CAT5E connection, I can sustain around 9.5 MBps. That speed for wireless? I drooled uncontrollably.
I figured I'd get the old devices off the AEBS, so I set it up as 'N' only; the "G" band is serviced by my wireless FIOS router. I even went so far as create a 5 GHz SSID so I would be sure that I would connect to my new 5 GHz speed demon.
Well, after months and months of tinkering with my AEBS and throwing an AX into the mix, I've resigned myself to the fact that my 5 GHz network will always be maxed out at around 2 MBps, where my 2.4 GHz network's topping out at around 5 MBps, about 2.5X faster.
I must say, I'm disappointed. I've tried every channel in the 5 GHz band. Some - like channel 44 - give me 3 strength bars, which seems pretty good, since my AEBS is 2 rooms away. The 2.4 GHz band usually is 4 strength bars, so if I don't have separate band SSID's, my iMac will normally pick the 2.4 GHz band. But once in while, on channel 44, my iMac will pick 5 GHz. Of course, I know it immediately...stuttering video playback, iTunes taking forever to retrieve album info, copies between my iMac and ReadyNAS NV+ waiting an eternity even to start copying. I do the Opt-click on the Airport icon, and yes, I'm logged into my speedy 5 GHz network. Needless to say, I didn't leave 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands combined very long. I've assigned separate SSID's to each frequency, and always make sure that I'm on the fast 2.4 GHz band.
Now, I don't think I'm stupid, but for the life of me, I can't figure out why my 5 GHz band seems to be maxed out at around 2 MBps. At least it seems that way, since I've never seen anything sustainable over that (maybe a peak at 2.1 MBps). The 2.4 GHz band easily stays consistently around 4.8-5.0 MBps. This speed difference is very noticeable, and can easily be seen from my iStat Menu's Network display.
I've even tried extending the 5 GHz band with my AE, and although the Transmit Rate gets to around 200-300, the real life speed is still slow as molasses. So I gave up on extending the network, and just use the AX for AirTunes.
Here's a look at my 2.4 GHz stats:
Notice that there's also a DigitalBirdie (5 GHz) network. That one's 3 strength bars, not too bad. Now for the stats on that one:
The Transmit Rate is low at 41, half the 2.4 GHz band. But I've had Transmit Rates in the 200's and it's not made much difference in thruput, if any.
Changing to the 5 GHz channel always leads to thruput slowdowns, but some are far worse than others (like file copies taking many seconds to start). But at their best, they never get better than around 2 MBps, even if the signal is fairly strong. I'm thinking I must have some configuration problem somewhere, but I can't figure it out. I've been banging my head trying all possible combinations to see if I can get over this 2 MBps hump, but I can't do it. I'm stumped.
Does anyone have an idea what else I can try? I'll do anything at this point, other than running 75 feet of CAT5E and ditching Airport
    Thanks.

  • Why is a pdf created by PDFScanLib v1.2.2, so much smaller/higher quality than one made in Acrobat?

I'm currently scanning documents at 600 dpi, compressing to jpeg, and creating PDFs from there. Pdfs are usually 20-30 pages, and are about 20mb. After OCR, and reducing the jpegs to 400dpi, I can get the file size down to about 11mb. However, some pdfs I've found as 'benchmarks' are under 1mb for 15-20 pages. The only difference I can find are that they are produced in PDFScanLib. Is that responsible for the difference?
Thans for any help you can pass along

    Hi Bob,
That's the strange thing.
