IMac 27 - Pixel Distortions

Hello community,
I hope someone can help me out with my bad situation. Since I bought an iMac in April 2010 - I really had NO problems and was so happy with the product.
Last week unfortunately a strange error happend SUDDENLY.
After I turned on the iMac, approx. after 30 mins of running a pixel error, distortion are seen on my screen. (Please see attached images).
I tried out a lot now and I still have these annoying error which I can't get rid of. Working, surfing on the iMac ist not really "possible" anymore.
My System:
iMac Intel Core i5 27 inch
Snow Leopard 10.6.8
CPU 2.66 GHz
Memory 4 GB
HD 1 TB
Graphics Card ATI Radeon HD 4850 / VRAM 512 MB
Unfortunately I have no Apple Care anymore.
What I've done so far:
- Restarted several times (still getting the errors)
- Unplugged it two days from power ressource (still getting the errors)
- Reset of PRAM and VRAM (still getting the errors)
- Installed all Updates (still getting the errors)
- Repaired Rights of the Harddrive (still getting the errors)
- Apple Hardware Test (no Hardware errors detected, but still getting the pixel errors
- Formated my Hardrive and installed Sow Leopard from the OSX-Installation Disk (still getting the errors) (also after updating all files through Software Update)
- Reset of Chaches....
BUT starting the iMac in SAFE MODE - the pixel errors are GONE.
What's the problem, can anybody help me out? I guess updating to 10.7 (Lion) won't be the solution. That would be too easy.
Thanks in advice and looking forward to your answers.
Regards from the alps
Stefan

That sounds like an over heating graphics chip, because it seems to starts after around 30 mins.
Get the iStat Pro widget to monitor and record your iMac's internal sensors, (GPU is for the Graphics Chip) and take some readings every 5 mins or so during that fisrt 30 mins.
iStat Pro, a Dashboard Widget by iSlayer
When was the last time you cleaned the iMac's bottom Air Intakes?
1. Shutdown the iMac
2. Un-hook everything, power & all other devices
3. Gently lay the iMac face down on a soft cloth or towel.
4. Go get out the vacuum cleaner, hose and brush attachment.
5. Seriously vacuum out the iMac's botton grill work and vents on the back.
(including under the RAM cover if your incline)
Now then, take and record some temperature readings?
Unfortunately if the problem persists, then you will need to take the iMac in for service.

  • Pixel Distortion - HELP!!

I have a problem in certain pictures with pixels distorting in LR. Its not a preview problem because the distortion comes along if I export the file. Here are two sample side-by-side screen grabs:
    http://clarkcreative.ca/l-psd_r-LR.png
    http://clarkcreative.ca/l-psd_r-LR_2.png
Left side - Photoshop, Right side - Lightroom. (opened in PSD via lightroom edit command)
200% crops. Its a jpg capture. There are no adjustments/presets applied to either. I have tried to re-import renamed/tiff but I get the same results. Can someone tell me why this is happening?

    An Intel Pentium 4.
I also noticed that those strange pixels remain uneffected when you do crazy things with the exposure, contrast, brightness, recovery, etc, even though the rest of the image gets altered. It's like they are holes in the images. It's definately a bug.
Good luck. I'll keep shooting RAW so I won't have that problem (Nikon D70s).

  • Saving object for web - pixelated & distorted

Trying to save an image for web in Illustrator. It's a "browse" icon that we use for our product. We're recreating the icons to look more "flat" with the outline state as the inactive and the fill state as the active. Here's what I get when I export it for the web as a .png.
**image when it's zoomed in using Preview
**image at it's normal size using preview.
    **image after flattening transparency
I've tried to optimize, not optimize, flatten transparency,  rasterize -- none of it's worked to make this icon look any better. The only thing that came somewhat close was flatten transparency -- that helped with the pixelation but the boxes all became distorted. Please help!

Image at normal size using preview is the most helpful piece of information. Would be good to knwo your exact pixel dimensions.
Did you use align to pixel grid? Try saving as .gif. This is as good as you can get with such a small size.

  • Cs5 - images have weird grid-like/pixelation distortion i cant get rid of! help!

i've just downloaded the trial of photoshop cs5 (it took ages mind you!) and when i go to open (or create) a file that is larger (eg 1000x750 pixels) there is this weird grid that distorts the image (it's not the grid you can turn off and on or the grid that shows the actual pixels). when i open a smaller file there is no grid and the image is perfectly clear and normal - but when i zoom out there is a grid. also, when i'm zoomed out (eg 66% but sometimes from even 200%) the distortion happens, whereas if i zoom closer it disappears.
it doesn't distort the image itself, but distorts the colours in parts of the image.
i've experimented enlarging the canvas of a smaller image and placing a larger image into it on a different layer, but then the grid affects not only the larger image but the smaller as well, like it is stretching the colours to the edge of the canvas, or trying to pixelate/fuzz the image. however the grid doesn't affect the whole canvas, just the bits above and to the side of the larger images (mostly).
also when i zoom in/out gradually the squares of the grid enlarge and change size (both bigger and smaller).
so i don't know what the problem is, and any help/suggestions would be much appreciated as i need to use the program for a uni assignment due in a couple of weeks!!
    thanks!

Hey- I have the same issue. When I started using cs5 I noticed this grid/distortion right away. At first I thought it was my wacom tablet (I use an Intuos 3) but its not. Its very annoying because I cant put my fingure on why this is happening. Anytime I ask a friend about it who normally knows alot about photoshop they tell me its that grid option thing which I have already turned off. I have included a screen shot of what the issue looks like. Any ideas anyone?

  • IMac Screen Distortion

I have an iMac in which boot camp and windows XP came pre-installed. The Mac screen video runs perfectly, but when I switch to windows XP screen the image deteriorates after 5-15 minutes. The distortion is preceded by a high pitched sound. Once the distortion becomes severe the entire screen begins to flicker. I have not found answer to this problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Is this what you guys are talking about? Is there a fix?

  • IMac G5 Distorted Video (Possibly Capacitors)

This is the main story you can skip this if you want to get straight to the problem: Hi, I got an iMac G5 (1st Generation 17-inch 1.6ghz PowerPC no isight) from my dad's friend and he said I could look around inside. He said he already looked around and switched around the ram etc. So I booted it myself and got a blue screen, did a PRAM reset and rebooted it about 10 times. I got the distorted video to look OK. (I am using some third party power cable, and a windows keyboard and mouse.) So then I held down my "option" key (Alt) and booted from a tiger cd. I was able to install it, but when I boot I can only boot from safe mode. I still get distorted video but you can still kind of see what is on the screen. If I don't boot from safe mode I either get a kernel panic when booting or when loading OSX, or I get a blue blue screen. If I try to put it asleep it crashes and if I leave it alone for just a little while it crashes. I tried an SMC reset, didn't work. I did command option o f and reset everything, didn't work. Also OSX wont detect the built in speaker, bluetooth, or headphone jack. The fans also randomly go FULL THROTTLE if it froze or if there was a kernel panic END OF MAIN STORY
I looked into to this a little bit more and found out it is MOST likely to be the capicitors so I was like huh. So I unscrewed the 3 bottom screws popped open the back and then THERE IT WAS! 2 blown capacitors. They were leaking the electrolyte fluid or whatever. I this picture I found of my same model with the blown capicitors, I circled the two blown capacitors I found. (this is not my picture) http://i.imgur.com/aFArv.jpg and so yea, I ordered two of the ones 1800hu or nu idk 6.3 V on Amazon. My dad's friend (the same guy who gave me this) has a soldering iron and will solder them in. I just wanted to see if this COULD be the problems or some of the problems could be related to other things. Thanks.

That is highly likely to be your problem.  They recommend replacing ALL the capacitors while you're doing it.  You have to disassemble the entire iMac while doing the soldering (from what I've read, I've never undertaken the job myself), and you can buy kits for under $20 (google G5 capacitor kits).  I think they also recommend reapplying the thermal paste to the processor.
It will probably need a new PRAM battery while you've got it open.
Of course there is no guarantee that the RAM and Hard Drive are okay, but they probably are.
    Good luck.

  • Images pixelated/distorted in ADE

I just downloaded ADE, and everything seems to be working, except that the images are all distorted. You can actually see part of the images below the distortion, but the distortion consists of what appear to be pixelated, thick horizontal lines of varying colors that block out major portions of the image and make them unusable.
Has anyone else encountered this issue? If so, was anyone able to successfully resolve it?
    Thanks.
Just realized that I can insert images, so here's an example:

    Read this FAQ:
Donald Gruener, "3.1 - Importing and Placing Graphics into PageMaker" #1, 17 May 2002 8:11 am
TIFF is the preferred raster format.
EPS should be OK with a postscript printer (e.g. PDF), but PM's preview is poor.
PM7 will accept AI, but only up to Ver 8
John Davies, "3.11 - Importing Adobe Illustrator Files (*.AI) and how they differ from *.EPS" #1, 7 Dec 2003 7:46 am
Remember PM is archaic. Your client should be using InDesign by now.

  • IMac Sound Distortion

I just got an iMac Quad Core i5 and i must say I'm fairly disappointed. The audio is distorted terribly, first I thought it might be just the hardware, but I also have an M-Audio Profire 2626 which works splendidly on my IBM compatible notebook. I have since downgraded from Lion back to 10.6.8, both version have the same issues.
Symptoms (on internal and external interfaces):
Hard Left & Hard Right balance, 75% volume -> exceedingly audible distortion.
    Centered balance -> audible distortion.
Does anyone know if this is an OSX issue, or could it be hardware based?
I am going to bootcamp install Windows 7 now...

Just to update some of my findings (incase it might help others):
What Apple doesn't care to mention is that the volumes can be driven far beyond clipping, what I did was, I played the same track through my M-Audio Profire 2626 and it appears that iTunes was overloading the input, it was clipping all the way, I brought iTunes down a couple of notches, panned hard left & right, and it worked fine. I switched back to the internal audio, did the same with iTunes & the master volume, and voila it worked! I have since concluded that iTunes & other audio apps were overloading the hardware creating the sound distortion.

  • I have pixel distortion in my window bar

it looks like this, the distorted pixels are in the left and right corner
    another sample:
it happens again and again, no other sideffects yet.
what to do should i run to a apple dealer and get my board switched,
i know this effect from former slowly and painful dying GPU's
    regards

If you have Apple Care call them.  If not and you want a "do-it-yourself" fix, do a Google search, see Youtube's "How to" video tutorials and Do-It-Yourself Laptop Repair.  Otherwise, take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you.
    Mac OS X (10.5.5)
If you do not want to upgrade to Snow Leopard or Lion, you should at least udate Leopard.  Use Software Update to update your os and anything else that needs to be updated showing up in SU which I know must be a whole lot of stuff!!!!

  • Pixel distortion when switching resolutions

I just hooked up a new LCD monitor via DVI. When swithcing resolutions as I do fairly reguarly when I play games I sometimes get distortion in some pixels. If I power cycle the monitor it corrects the problem. I'm wondering if this is something I should be concerned about - did I get a lemon monitor?

    >Any suggestions would be very much valued.
Upgrade to CS4 so you can run ACR 5.2.

  • Desktop window pixels distorted

The desktop window pixels will get distorted intermittently, but when you open any other window from other apps it is fine, but the desktop will have distorted pixels in the background. They look sort of like when a digital picture on the TV gets mess up, only smaller. Would this be software related since the distortion is only on the desktop and not other applications? Any ideas?
    thanks mark

Got this figured out. If you touch the sides of the screen to adjust it while it is running this happens, maybe some chips for the screen going. If you don't touch it it works for now.

  • IMac speaker distortion

My 3 year old iMac has suddenly started croaking. The right speaker is distorting like mad. Has happened all of a sudden without any trigger that I can think of. Unless my using a headphone one day has something to do with it. Or the monsoons that have pushed up humidity levels these last couple of months.
The question is:  Can I do anything to reset this speaker? Or is the hardware shot and do I need to call in at Apple care?

I'd say if you connect a headset and it's fine that it's a hardware problem not a "reset" problem

  • Vox USB 2.0 TV Box Pixelated distortion

       Greetings,
I recently purchased your VOX USB2.0 TV BOX.  I don't believe I have ever had a harder time with getting something that is supposed to be so simple to simply work.  After installation and driver installation + updates from your site.  It still did not resolve my issues.  Tried on 3 different computers with the same results.  The device gives me a horrid resolution.  Its so pixelated that you can-not make out any words at all.  And that is just the video-in.  The TV in is probably worse, I see practically nothing but snow and distortion.  I can tell that it is receiving the certain channels that I would watch on a regular TV, but its too horrid.
Any advice on how I can resolve this problem?  Thanks.
     :wall:Zak:wall:
P.S.  Please reply to [email protected] if you don't mind.  Thanks again.

Have you tried checking all the audio settings to make sure sound isn't muted somewhere on line in?
This should not matter.   The volume level of LINE-IN, yes, but the muted status?  No.  The VOX software takes control of the mute status on LINE-IN to control the signal input from the VOX.   Kind of a crappy design decision, as it means that the LINE-IN has a CONSTANT audio signal coming in, and if there's a glitch that kicks off LINE-IN's mute, you'll be  blasted by whatever audio is coming off the VOX at max volume.  When you deactivate the tuner software, it's supposed to reactivate the MUTE.
So, having MUTE on is perfectly normal.

  • VGA cable pixel distortion with Acer Monitor

    Greetings:
    Here is my problem:
         1. With my home office configuration, my MacBook is needs a 10ft cable to reach my monitor.
         2. Because of this, I cannot use the Acer monitor cable provided from the manufacturer.
         3. I've had to buy two different VGA cables and neither of them work.
         4. Here is the problem: For some reason, when you close the MacBook and use the external monitor, the display gets stretched. This only happens when the laptop is fully closed. When it is open and utilizing both monitors, it is fine. Also, When the laptop is open, I have more pixel display options available on the Acer than when the laptop is closed.
I bought a high end VGA cable and I know it is able to carry the correct pixels because my HP works just fine on it at 1600 x 900.
Is it the cable? Or is there a glitch with the MacBook????? Is there a special cable I need to order???? Please help!
    Thanks,
    Jon

  • Macbook Pro Display Problems - Pixels distorted and jerkig up and down

I took a video of a problem my Macbook Pro is having... I am going to take it in for repairs but am wondering if anyone else has had this problem or if there are any ideas as to what it might be. It has been getting progressively worse over the past couples weeks. At first, it would not start happening until my computer was on for a while. Now, it happens all the time, but it only distorts the windows open above my desktop... not the desktop itself.
Here's a link to the (terrible) video I recorded: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfmmaoDBWLQ
    Any ideas? Thank you!

Glad to help! Sometimes it's good to play with UA a bit, just so you can recognize what's going on if something gets activated. For example, somebody's cat managed to turn on the "White on Black" feature, which drastically affects the appearance of your desktop. I don't know how features in UA keep getting turned on accidentally, but it happens.
