Imac 27" quad core. screen dead in one week

This is the second 27" iMac I have purchased and both have died within one week. The first one was diagnosed with a bad component that regulates heat and caused the machine to shut off and the screen to have banding/flickering issues.
This new machine is literally one week old, and after spending one full day installing software and restoring time machine it wasn't touched for 5 days due to a busy work schedule. On the first real day of work at home (5 hrs) the screen went completely black. This time the harddrive is still working and I was able to launch in target drive mode via my laptop (hold t will firing up iMac) and get the necessary files off of it. Now I get the fun of wiping the drive so I can return yet another 27"imac. What has happened to Apple reliability, I still have a blue and white g3 that will run.
Frustrated is an understatement since now I am behind in my work and have to cart this heavy machine back down to an inconveniently located apple store.
The Apple support guy was nice enough, yet once again they deny this is a common issue (there are over 300 pages related to this- which has now been archived to prevent more responses, hence my new one) and he ran me through the normal nonsense: 1) unplug machine and wait a minute (what!? I thought that was a windows fix!!) and 2) hold command and option while also holding p and r as you turn on the machine -- even the support guy knew this wouldn't do anything. Apple needs to stand up and take responsibility for a machine that has serious issues!

Millions of folks have purchased that Mac with no issues whatsoever. The machine is a great design. Occasionally Apple's supplier's part may fail. That is to be expected when one deals with the millions of parts that make the various supply streams for Apple's products. This is why Apple has a manufacturer's limited warranty, plus gives you the option to extend that warranty. Unfortunately you have experienced two failures on new machines. But you are reporting that in fact they are completely different failures.
BTW, where is the thread that you say is archived?

Mac and Mac models are picky about the RAM the Mac needs to see and use.
As you have found out, the 1067 speed RAM will not work in your year and model iMac.
You need the 1333 speed RAM.
If, you can return the RAM for a refund, do it!
If not, try online Mac RAM source and seller Crucial memory. They have a table that matches your Mac to the correct and reliable RAM. You may need to contact them to see whether or not they ship to South Africa, though.
If Crucial dpesn't work out, here's the specs for your year and model iMac that you need to seek out and purchase.
    Maximum Memory
32 GB (Actual) 16 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    4 - 204-pin PC3-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
    Good Luck!

  • Value of upgraded RAM in imac 27" quad core

    Friends,
I have a 27" imac i7 quad core on order. I do a fair amount of editing in FCE and Aperture. Does anyone have any sense of whether there would be a noticeable difference in processing speed if I upgrade the RAM to 12gb, versus 8gb or 4gb? Are there any RAM benchmarks out there?
    Thanks!
    Steve

Well, yes, mixing & matching is fine, your system will run (of course, that assumes you have the correct kind of RAM ).
Mac memory architecture supports dual-channel memory access. Depending on the model (G5, Intel Core/Core2 Duo/Quad Core), it uses 64-bit data paths or 128-bit paths. If the DIMMS are matched, you get the benefit of the maximum speed of dual-channel access. If the DIMMS are not matched the system has to revert to asymmetric mode, which is slower. How much slower depends on all sorts of things.
Understand, that's not a complete technical explanation, but it hopefully makes the essential point. More RAM trumps matched DIMMS. However, you made a significant investment in your Core i7 iMac, if you're going to add RAM, why not buy matched DIMMS?

  • Memory arrangements in iMac i5 quad core (mid 2010)

I used to run 8 GB of ram in 4 modules. The upper two slots were occupied with the 2 samsung 2GB modules that came with the computer. The lower two slots I filled with 2 more 2 GB ram modules from corsair. These 8 Gb of RAM worked fine until one of these corsair modules failed: after several crashes I identified the culprit module by elimination using memtest.
A good time to upgrade: I left the upper slots as is and filled the two lower slots 4 GB modules, also from corsair so that I now have 12 GB. When booting up the machine, the system profiler indicated that the machine only recognised 6 GB, one of each size module. When removing the two 4 GB modules, the imac recognised the remaining two 2 GB module. Turns out that one of the 4 GB modules is doa. It was identified again by elimination: Using only one of the 4Gb modules in the mac in the same upper left slot, the imac booted up with the good one, but not with the faulty one.
Question: why did the imac not recognise one working memory module in the upper slot when one in the lower slot was faulty, but recognised it again, once the faulty one was removed.
Apple says the i5 quad-core imac does not start up if only one of the lower slots is occupied - which is not true. Apple also says that the imac does not work properly when the memory access door is not re-installed, which is also not true.
Does it matter whether I install two 2 GB modules in the upper slots and two 4 GB modules in the lower, or would it be better the other way round. What if I installed the 4 GB modules above each other the the same with the 2 Gb modules?
    Any experience would be appreciated.

Apple says the i5 quad-core imac does not start up if only one of the lower slots is occupied - which is not true.
If you look at the Apple instructions online (I believe the exact article you mentioned), I understood that Apple and I had a different idea of what top and bottom were supposed to be. Both you and I feel that the original RAM are in the top slots, but the instructions are such that it sounds as though they are in the bottom.
In any case, I've read of another case where someone moved the original RAM to the bottom and installed the added RAM in the top slots - supposedly it will result in slightly faster performance because those are the RAM that will be addressed first. However, the RAM needs to be in pairs horizontally: 2 x 4 GB in the top (or bottom) slots and 2 x 2 GB horizontally in the other banks. I do not have any idea as to why a top slot would not work if the bottom was not occupied.

  • Hi, I bought an imac 27" quad-core i5 with 1067Mhz DDR3 RAM in it. I would like to know if this is the right type of speed for my imac as I found out that these imacs come standard with 1333Mhz DDR3's? It is crashing a lot!

Hi all. I bought an imac 27", 3.1Ghz quad-core i5 Mid 2011 last year in 2012. The machine has been crashing ever so frequently. I upgraded the RAM from the 4Gb it came with to 12Gb. It still crashes! I recently noticed that my imac came with 1067Mhz DDR3 memory chips ( slower speed) than the Apple mac recommended 1333Mhz DDR3 memory chips.
The shop I bought it from ( Incredible Connection, Woodmead, South Africa) are refusing to own up as they are saying the 1333Mhz chips have to be ordered in advance. Surely they are supposed to sell the product with the right kind of Ram in it? Not for me to find out? Now I have to fork out more money to make my imac factory standard? Maybe I am wrong, But do these Mid 2011's run well on 1067Mhz memory chips if I upgrade to 32Gb? Is it possible people are swapping 1333Mhz chips from new machines with 1067Mhz chips which are way too cheaper? My system version( SMC Number) is 1.72f5
    Baffled!

  • 8GB Ram Upgrade for 27" iMac (Not Quad Core)

Hey guys, I have an iMac 27", not the quad core though. I want to know, what is the best UK retailer to buy 8GB of Ram for my iMac. I have 4GB at the moment, and I want to run FCP, and After Effects more efficiently, speed up Render time etc.
Where can I buy some from a shop that could be found in the Trafford Centre, so Curries/PC World , The Apple Shop, Selfridges, etc.
Any ideas about how much it would cost?
Also how much more would 16GB of RAM be?
    Is it easy to install?
    Thanks guys
    -Bob

Surf to http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple/memory/iMac and find the correct memory for your iMac.
    OWC ships worldwide.
Good prices. Not the lowest, but their service is worth it.

  • IMac i7 Quad-Core firewire port and video camera

Has anybody tried to detect a video camera connected to the firewire 800 port?
I have already tried with two PRO tape-based DV video cameras: SONY PD170 and PANASONIC AG-HVX200E with no results. The same models do not have any problem with iMac 27" Core Duo 2.
Apple care protection plan has been useful only to know that if my iMac firewire port can handle an external Hard Disk, as it does, the compatibility with the camera is not a problem of Apple, but simply mine.
Any suggestion? Any help to find official pages by Apple with technical specification about firewire port and protocol of the new iMac 27" i7?
    Thanks, Carlo

Today my Mac has finally been fixed. I had to send it to Milano, to SATA srl, where they have replaced the logic board. Now I can import video from my video camera using the FireWire port. Thank SATA!!!

  • Blue Screen Of Death One week following a RAM upgrade.

Here are the error codes: Any idea where I should start? (and where I should end) when trying to repair? Thanks for the expertise!

"It's not a true crash, in the sense that the Blue Screen was initiated only because the combination of video driver and video hardware was being unresponsive, and not because of any synchronous processing exception".
Since Vista, the "Timeout Detection and Recovery" (TDR) components of the OS video subsystem have been capable of doing some truly impressive things to try to recover from issues which would have caused earlier OS's like XP to crash.
As a last resort, the TDR subsystem sends the video driver a "please restart yourself now!" command and waits a few seconds.
If there's no response, the OS concludes that the video driver/hardware combo has truly collapsed in a heap, and it fires off that stop 0x116 BSOD.
If playing with video driver versions hasn't helped, make sure the box is not overheating.
Try removing a side panel and aiming a big mains fan straight at the motherboard and GPU.
Run it like that for a few hours or days - long enough to ascertain whether cooler temperatures make a difference.
If so, it might be as simple as dust buildup and subsequently inadequate cooling.
I would download cpu-z and gpu-z (both free) and keep an eye on the video temps

  • When will i5 and i7 Quad Core iMacs actually be shipped?

I ordered the new iMac 27" Quad Core i7 yesterday. I am so excited to start using it in place of my iMac G5. My order says it will be shipped in "November" but the new optional Apple Remote is showing as being shipped "November 23" (is that a hint?) Does anyone have a clearer understanding of the likely ship date for the Quad Care iMacs. I am guessing that the delay is due to Apple not yet having a supply of these particular i5 & i7 Intel chips, are they being used currently in any other Macs? I don't think so. If you have any thoughts/info, I'd love to here from you.

Since order an i7 Quad iMac, I've checked this discussion board several times a day, and other such postings several times a day. I'm glad we are able to share our excitement about getting these new iMacs up and running at home. Apple itself has been silent beyond the "November" ship date, I would think they should be getting a bit more specific in a day or two. The most hopeful sign I see is that Best Buy Canada Online is still stating est. ship date Nov. 3rd. I assume they mean Nov 3rd 2009. I am not a big fan of Best Buy, but I was able to buy my Canon 5D Mark II camera from one of their retail store in NYC, when nobody else had them in stock. This great camera is still hard to find in retail stores. Thanks for everyone's posts on the Quad's shipping date, at least we know we are not alone in the wait and anticipation!

  • "iMac 27" with quad core with an ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB video processor"

I'm about to order a new iMac 27" quad core with an ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB video processor.
I'm a long time PC gamer but decided i want to make the full switch to Mac and I have a few questions about the graphics capabilities of this computer.
I game in a clan that plays Battlefield 2 Project Reality.
Will this card handle this game at the high settings and native resolution of the monitor? I also play COD4 and have the same question for that game.
Thanks for your input. I'm sure this will be helpful for all of us and I will share it with my clan of over 100 people strong.

Yeah it plays crysis fine, here is a video of me playing it:

  • I have a HP Pavilion p6710f with an AMD Athlon Quad-Core processor takes 10 to 12 minutes to boot

I have a refurbished HP Pavilion p6710f desktop, with an AMD Quad-Core processor.  About 4 weeks aog I reformated the HD and reinstalled Windows 7 Prof and the rest o my software and it ran fine for about 2 weeks then it started taking 5 to 10 minutes to boot up in morning or to restart.  I had downloaded a couple of things and I uninstalled them and it did better, but gradually over the last week it has started taking 10 to 15 minutes to boot up or restart.  With either it takes a few seconds to get the HP stuff in the middle of the monitor, then in a few seconds it loads the choices (Function keys for setup, recover, etc.) then it takes 4 to five minutes to show "windows loading" the 3 to 4 minutes to show the 4-colored windows logo and then up to 5 minutes to load my icons and be ready to run--once all this is done everything runs fine until I need to restart, and then it is 10 to 15 minutes again to get up and running.
When I redid everything about 4 weeks ago I made an image on an external 1 Tb HD that is always connected thru a UBB Port and this morning I recovered and It reinstalled it, but it did not help.
Don't think it is the BIOS battery as it doesn't lose time.
    Hope someone can help me

That's a kernel panic and indicates some sort of problem either with the computer's hardware or software. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics. It would help to post the panic log: Mac OS X- How to log a kernel panic.
Meanwhile, try booting the computers into Safe Mode then restarting normally. If this is simply a disk repair or cache file problem then this may fix it.
You can also try creating a new admin account on each computer then booting into the new account. This would help determine if the problem is related to a bad file in the user accounts.

    This is a good deal.
I paid that for my 2009 27 inch iMac with similar specs through an Apple Reseller.
Is this from an individual or Authorized Apple Reseller?
If from an individual, then there will be no type of warranty.
An Apple Authorized Reseller wil have a warrany period of 30 days to six months depending.
