IMac 27" vs 27" screen + MacBook Pro

Hello you all,
Sry for my bad English, I promise to do my best :-)
Could someone help me understand the difference between
1. An iMac 27" ( the computer ), a keyboard, a trackpad etc
And
2. An Apple screen 27" plus the most advanced MacBook Pro
As a matter of fact, I live on board an expedition vehicle, and mainly visiting the middle of nowhere. see;
http://www.zangzing.com/rdsck/zen-and-the-art-of-unimog-maintenance.
How would I do the updates of a heavy iMac computer ?
with the MacBook pro, I could go "to town" from time to time, and upgrade/update.
Regarding the work I do with my photos, is there a big difference between 1. and 2.   ???
Thanks for your reply and patience reading me.
Regards from the Cordillera of the Andes
Richard
ps that question might be strange (or stupid ) the fact is that, I don't have an Apple Store as a neighbor :-)))

From what you have said the MacBook Pro would work better for you. Get a portable USB drive for backups.

I have an iMac, an iPhone, and a MacBook Pro.  My full iTunes library is on the iMac and iPhone, but only a handful of songs are on my MacBook.  They are all associated with the same Apple ID.  When I try to sync, I get a warning message stating that I will lose songs on my phone which aren't on the laptop.  How transfer my music from my phone to the laptop?

    Hey kbert73
I would do a transfer of purchases from the phone and not sync. If you sync then it will want to start over and sync music that is on the MacBook Pro. If you want to transfer the music, check out the article below that will give you multiple options on how to move. I have also provided on how to sync with multiple computers.

  • How does one continue to use Mail on the early MacBook Pro, Model 1,1, that is not upgradable to Lion?  I have been running iCloud on my iPhone (OS5) and iMac (Lion) along with the MacBook Pro (OS Version 10.6.8)

How does one continue to use Mail on the early MacBook Pro, Model 1,1, that is not upgradable to Lion?  I have been running iCloud on my iPhone (OS5) and iMac (Lion) along with the MacBook Pro (OS Version 10.6.8) since November until now.  Mail will no longer download on the MacBook Pro and keeps asking for my password.

Mail should still be usable with your machine - but you'll need to update the settings to conform to the requirements of your system. Check with your ISP (like ATT, etc.) for the settings that will work with your Mail. Once you've updated this, you should be able to email like before.
For example, my ISP required that I go to Mail Preferences/Accounts and make sure the details conform to your email settings.
I have no idea of what your ISP is or what the settings might be, but this is likely the source of the problem.

  • Can't Transfer my info from Imac( mid-2007) to my macbook pro (mid-2009)

    Hello,
i bought a macbook pro today and I'm having trouble transferring my data from my Imac(mid-2007) to my macbook pro. I do not own a firewire cable unless it comes with the computer? I was doing it wirelessly and after i entered the code said it was transsferring data. But after a minute it cam up with this notice,"There was an error connecting to the network, and the information on the other Mac couldn't be accessed." What should i do? Does anyone else have this problem? Did you fix it?
    Thanks!
    -cobras7

You can make the transfer using an Ethernet cable. From you machine description, I can't tell if you will need a crossover (Ethernet) cable or not. Here is the info you will need to do the transfer via Ethernet.

whats a faster internet connection joining one or create one.i have one ps3 one imac 2 ipads and one macbook pro?

For the AirPort Extreme Base Station to provide Internet access to network clients, it would need to be configured for: 1) Connection Sharing = Share a public IP address, and 2) Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network.
Although the option: Wireless Mode = Join a wireless network, exists for the Extreme, it really serves no purpose and should not be used.

Replace the Time Capsule with one that has a larger hard drive. Or erase the one you have and start a new set of backups or backup one of the computers to a different backup drive.

I've seen that the Retina screen MacBook Pros can use Power Nap from Apple's WWDC keynote but can the non-Retina screen MacBook Pros do that too? It has the same processor and close to the same RAM. Or is it because the Retina screen MacBook Pros have flash storage that they can do Power Nap? Thanks

  • While in traget disk mode to fix a black screen Macbook pro,  I trashed my boot from system library...oops - it trashed the working mac file and now I have no ability to open my trash to regain it... I do have an Imac, and connecting cable.

I trashed a system window boot file while in target disk mode: attempting to repair a black screen in macbook pro A,  it removed the file from working macbook pro B.  Now I can't open the trash to regain it.  I have an Imac, and can set up target disk mode, but am not sure where to go from here.. Help!

So, next I used Target mode...saw the HD icon on my IMac display and "loaded" Yosemite back onto the Macbook Pro, I thought, but no!  it loaded it onto my Imac -  so, had to wait til that was done to continue....next day...I decided to try command-R w/startup, recovery mode,  and use wifi to reload Yosemite onto my Macbook Pro, because I didn't want to go deeper into the issue - just wanted my computer working again.
    That worked, of course.
Thank you for your help - I always learn a lot on this site.

  • New imac as external monitor for macbook pro?

I have a 2011 macbook pro that I use for work. I am thinking about buying the new imac for use at home. The question is can I use the imac as an external screen for my mbp? Or do I have to have another external monitor to use for that?

can I use the imac as an external screen
    Yes

  • Why doesn't PS open on IMac now (does open on MacBook Pro) without signing up for CSCloud version?

Out of the blue Photoshop will not open on my iMac. Instead a message to purchase iCloud version of Creative Suite and never lets me open Photoshop afterward. It prevents me from using my "Big Mac" for creative work and production. I own and use CS6. I dont want the iCloud version. Photoshop, however, DOES work on my MacBook Pro. BUT I want to use my big screen for design work. Creative Suite offer asks for my serial number.

It's telling you the exact situation: PowerPC applications are not supported under Lion, and will not be in any future version of Mac OS X. You would need to get updated software from NetZero that supports Intel-based Macs - and the NetZero tech obviously doesn't know what s/he is talking about; it's absolutely their software. If your MacBook came with an earlier version of Mac OS X and you're willing to revert from Lion back to that older version, that would get you back PowerPC support. Of course, you'll need an external modem with your MacBook; I presume you have one?
Otherwise, you're probably have to stick with your iBook.
    Regards.

  • Using 2009 iMac as display for 2012 MacBook Pro

I have a late 2009 27-inch iMac and a Retina, 13-inch, Late 2012 MacBook Pro.  How do I use the iMac screen as a display for the MacBook.

    Hi Jim on Apple,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
It sounds like you need to put your iMac in what is called Target Display Mode. The attached article has some great information on Target Display Mode including setting up and other common frequently asked questions.

  • Using iMac as a display for MacBook Pro?

I understand that the new iMacs can be used as external displays but can not find any information on how this works. Is it just a matter of connecting a MacBook Pro to the iMac and hitting a key? Also, what cables do I need to get this to work?
    Thanks
    Tony

Hey, I just got my 27" iMac last week and can verify that this works, as of a few minutes ago. I used the cable that converts from DisplayPort (the end that plugs into the iMac) and the mini DisplayPort (the end that connects to the MacBook Pro.
Plugged in the cable and the iMac screen flashed gray for a second, indicating, I guess, that the iMac had detected the external device. Then I could toggle it over with the Cmd-F2 keyboard trick. When you toggle it on, the iMac screen looks like a giant second monitor for the MacBook Pro. When you toggle it off, the screen switches back to your regular iMac desktop. When I first connected the cable, the MacBook screen dimmed briefly with an overlayed thermometer bar I hadn't seen before indicated some sort of calibration, perhaps? That took a few seconds, then it worked like a charm.
HOWEVER, if you are expecting the iMac to function as a second display for another device (like a PC, for example), the same trick DOES NOT work. This isn't clear in the documentation on apple.com and even some of the people in the Apple Store who I spoke to when I was buying it had not much clue about this, other than that it would work with a MacBook Pro. There's another device required (evidently) to make this work. Have had to order it, but have not tried it yet:

  • Using iMac as external display from Macbook Pro flickers static and crackles.

I'm trying to use my iMac as an external display.
When I plug in my early 2011 Macbook Pro into my Mid 2010 iMac via a Belkin Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort, the iMac screen flickers with static and there's random crackling noises.
Weird thing is, when I try the same thing with a new Macbook Air, everything works perfectly!
    Here's a quick video demonstrating what I'm talking about - http://youtu.be/xxTXVRffWwE
Are the two not compatible or do I just have a defective Macbook Pro? The Macbook Pro works fine with the Cinema Display I have in the office...

Huh, It should work like this:
Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - Apple Support
    iMac Model
    Cable Supported
    Port on Source Computer
    iMac (27-inch Late 2009)
    Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort
    Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt
Actually that table seems illogical. The cable supported is mini to mini display but the port says "or Thunderbolt"
Does that seem contradictory to you?
