IMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 12gb of RAM running very very slow.

My late 2010 iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 12gb of ram is running very slow. It takes a very long for the computer to boot with the desktop taking ages to fully load. Applications are also taking an unholy amount of time to load with the spinning wheel always appearing through out use, and they often crash or don't respond and close during use. I'm talking applications like Word taking 3 minutes to load and getting the spinning wheel when font size is tried to be changed and crashing and closing if a large volume of text is attempted to be pasted into a document.The computer is also failing to shut down properly just staying on a blue screen. I recently wiped and completed a fresh install however the issues came back.
As you can imagine after spending so much on the computer I'm not best pleased about these issue, I've spoken to the apple staff in my local store by they weren't very helpful and seemed to no little about computers and the so called "Genius" who I spoke to about my issue was a joke, repeating himself and talking utter rubbish, while I understand you need to look at a computer to get a real picture of an issue, some advice could of been provided. I haven't got time to take the computer to the store at the moment and get a technician to look a it, so I was wondering if anyone else had experienced these issues and knew what caused the fault, and that way if possible I can repair the issue myself.
Thanks in advance for any help on the issue it’s much appreciated. At the moment I'm pretty close to ditching the thing and buying an Alienware!

Your tems are fine, nothing at all to worry about. One thing you can do is shut down the computer, remove the RAM plate cover on the bottom and vacuum out the air intake. As for the spinning beach balls that isn't a freeze it means a process is busy. You can run Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) and when you begin getting SBBOD look in AM and see if you see any processes using a large %CPU and also click the System Memory tab and look to see how much FREE RAM is available at that point in time. As a general rule of thumb OS X likes to have 500MB or more of FREE RAM, if you see it's at or below 500MB then a RAM upgrade is needed or you need to reduce the amount of open windows. Gomtomsyetm preferencs and make sure that you HDD is selected as the start up disk. Then start up using your install disc and run disk utility and repair the drive just in case something has gotten corrupt.

My Imac 2.0 GHz Intel Core Duo keeps powering off

Hi all,
I have a 20inch 2.0 GHz Intel Core Duo (Imac 4.1), Over the last few weeks the Mac would just power off on the odd occasion when using Apeture, I put this down to being the just overworked for processing picture. This seems to have been getting worse and kept occurring more and more often. Light Internet browsing was fine..
I decided after some time to replace the 2gb memory i had to see if that would fix the issue, this seemed to work for a few days then the same issues returned.
I now seeing this issue occured just by opening Safari and decided to rebuild the Imac, I completed the Snowleopard install and all seemed ok for a day then it re-occurred again and seemed to be worse, I then removed the 2gb memory and just kept with the 512mb as when bought... Still it keeps powering off. I have moved to different power sockets and still see the same issues.
Please note in order to power the Imac backup up I have to leave the power out for about 20-30 minutes, If i leave the power plugged in it never boots backup up.
I now decided to even revert back to Lion OS, but it just powers off during the install...
I thinking it sounds like a Power supply issue but would like confirmation before I take it to a repair shop..

As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...

Dithered Colors in iPhoto 6 on iMac 20" Intel Core Duo with 1.5GB RAM

I have a 20" iMac Intel Core Duo. Shoot at 100 ISO, sRGB, with a Canon Digital Rebel XT in a studio setting. When viewing the images in iPhoto they have a noticeable dithering on the colors, especially on the seamless. Sometimes it's bad.
If I view them full screen in Comparison mode I see it there, too. Detail is intact, but the colors dither. Doesn't happen in Photoshop CS2, and I don't remember if it happens in Preview...
Any ideas of what is going on?

Are you running the latest Quicktime version, 7.1.5? If not that may have something to do with it. Also what color profile are the files assigned? You can check that out by viewing them with Preview and using the Summary pane of the Info window there. Are you shoot RAW and importing those files? If so there may be addition issues that I can't help you with although as I understand it iPhoto creates a jpg file from the RAW file upon import and that's what you're working with.
Make sure your monitor is set to millions. Although since CS2 doesn't show that effect I'm guessing it is set to that. But check anyway.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

IMac 2 GHz Intel Core Duo with 2GB RAM

The Internet is frequently very slow. I am hard wired to the TimeWarner Motorola cable modem, but also have a new router with 5 GHz that has a Firewire port. Would my Internet speed increase substantially by hard wiring to the router by Firewire?
My MacBook with 4GB RAM is much faster via a wireless connection.

Unfortunately, connecting your iMac by Firewire directly to a router which then connects to the cable modem will Not increase the speed of your Interent connection relative to directly connecting your iMac to the cable modem. Your iMac's network speed is at your ISP's delivered maximum directly through the cable modem. All the router would add is the ability to share the cable modem's output signal among multiple connected computers. I believe you are experiencing the fact that the internal hardware (CPU, RAM, etc.) of your older iMac may be slower in processing the ISP's internet signal than your more powerful MacBook.

I have the same iMac 7,1 and have upgraded the internal drive to 3TB.
Yes, you will need suction cups. You can source them from an auto parts store. The suction cups used to pull out dents from car panels will work to lift the glass from your iMac. This is the most daunting task, but in the end was simple enough with suction cups.
You can search google for instructions on installation of the HD once you have lifted the glass.

Before I drop 5 bills of Logic 8, what kind of performance am I looking at with a Imac 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2 gigs?

Your machine is a whole bunch faster than the G5's most of us use, and 2 gigs should be fine. The only way you'll get a benefit from more than 2 gigs of ram is if you use other programs alongside Logic, or if you use lots of large EXS samples. Additional ram beyond 2 gig will not get you greater track count, more Space Designers (or any other plugins besides EXS) or lower latency. It will not get more instances or sample sizes for third party plugs used as AU within Logic. If you run third party plugs as rewire or standalone - separate from Logic - they will benefit from additional ram.
I'm doing very well with a G5; additional drives and pci interface help alot. You should do even better with an Imac, although I don't know if it has a PCI slot.
