Imac 3.06 system slow 10.7.4

I am concerned that my iMac with 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and 4GB of RAM continues to slow down and not perform up to it's obvious speed design advantages in system 10.7.4. I'm seriously considering going back to 10.5.4. The process of upgrading systems was not without flaws and effected much of my specialized recording software, even LogicTech Pro that I bought with the machine for digital sound recording. I've gone through each product's upgrade path and all software works, but each concurrent new system update continues to force further upgrades of software that continue to downgrade my Mac's performance. This IS a 64 bit architecture machine, afterall. My iPad 1 has a faster web browser experience. Very frustrated.

To help out here with your issues, your HD should have, at least, 15% of your total HD space left to allow OS X to run smooth.
Also, be very careful what you delete off your HD so as to not incur more OS problems.
That's why Brody recommended a complete backup copy of your current system.
Places you can delete data with no real impact, web browser cache files system cache files.
Another thing, keep the amount of background running apps to a minimum.
Also, make sure you don't have a lot of background apps running as part of your system Startup login items.
I have an iMac with your CPU spec, another possible reason for your slowdown is, also, RAM.
Running CPU and RAM intensive apps along side OS X, 4Gbs of RAM just isn't going to cut it!
Every version of OS X needs more CPU, GPU and RAM!
4 GBs of RAM! IMO, is the working minimum just to run OS X, especially OS X Lion and the upcoming Mountain Lion.
Plus, as you have found out, new software versions have new features and put new demands on existing CPU, GPU and RAM, also.
Your iMac can take up to 16 GBs of RAM.
If can afford it put the entire 16 GBs into your iMac.
Here's a good supplier of RAM.
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple/memory/
If you can't afford to put this much RAM into your iMac, at least, double it to, at least, 8 GBs of RAM.

  • Intel iMac Dual Display System Slow Down

When I connect a standard VGA 17" monitor to my iMac intel 17" 1Gb RAM as a second monitor (not mirrored) the system seems to slow down. I'm using a mini dvi to vga adapter. My graphics card is a 128Mb ATI Radeon X1600.
For example if i open a couple of boxes (i.e. firefox and finder) and use expose to split them apart, where it was smooth before it now jitters. And Final Cut gives dropped frame warnings only when the second monitor is connected.
Is there something i'm doing wrong or is this to be expected?

Thanks for your advice. I suspected it might be a ram thing. I plan to upgrade to 2Gb (shame that's the limit). hopefully that'll fix it.
So could the hardrive also make a difference? I have the standard 150Gb drive. Can this be changed in a 17" iMac? Also where you said "look at the size of your hard drive and any setting for swap".. do you mean theres a setting I could change or that I should get another drive? (sorry i'm a bit rubbish on this side of things)
oh and it's Final Cut Pro (UB) i'm using
    Thanks alot

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The usual results of posting etrecheck output on this site without a full description of the problem are very poor. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? What other changes did you make, if any, just before it became slow? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

  • I have noticed my iMac OSX is very slow.  I would like to clean it up.  I continue to get a pop-up from TUneUP my Mac.  Any reviews?  Any suggestions?

I have noticed that my iMac 0SX is VERY SLOW.  I would like to clean it up.  I have been receiving pop-ups from TUNEUP MY MAC.  They want $40 to supposedly clean up my computer and make it run smoother and quicker.  Any reviews? Any suggestions?

DO NOT repeat DO NOT download or install any performance applicaiton's of any type. This is a scam and should be avoided. You haven't told us anything about your computer such as the version of OS X installed or how it's configured. I would recommend downloading and running an EtreCheck report so we can get a better idea about your system. You can find Etrecheck by clicking:
    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Run it's report then post it back to this forum.

  • System slow while copying files

    Hi,
    I found a problem on my iMac 27" (2011).
While I'm copying files from a folder to another in the same hdd (this only happens with the iMac hdd) or when unzip a file my system slows down, if I'm watching a video, sometimes freezes the image and then continues.
    is it normal?
I've tryed to reset PRAM NVRAM, and verify permissions, and nothing seems to solve the problem.

Copying files from one folder to another on the same harddrive puts double duty on the harddrive to read And write the files.  This also consumes CPU cycles, so when watching video, which is data intense from the harddrive or internet also, your system is under heavy load and what you are experiencing is pretty normal.  That is one reason that heavy data and viedo users often upgrade when ordering their machine to extra harddrives, hyperthreading CPU's, more RAM and oversized graphics cards.
    Hopee this helps

  • Imac 11,2 running slower after installing software updates

I purchased my imac 11,2 Sept. 2010. I recently downloaded my software updates that included airport utility, itunes and canon printer software update. Since these downloads, the imac has been very slow. Does anybody have any suggestions why my imac runs slower after software updates and what can be done to get my imac back to previous speed.

    isis24680,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Did you run Disk Utility> Repair Permissions? Do you have your eMac in display-only sleep overnight, or use a utility such as OnyX, or otherwise ensure the Unix crom maintenenace scripts run? OS X 10.4.2 (in 7/05) included provision to force the maintenance scripts when sufficiently oberdue; it's possible you're seeing the Mac trying to catch up on a year-plus worth of maintenance.
Do you have anything showing in System Preferences> Others, especially anything that adds to the menu bar? You'll need to check that any add-on system utilities or background programs are updated to run properly under 10.4.6; a quick way to check is to Start Up in Safe Mode and see if performance returns to normal.
Open Applications> Utilities> Activity Monitor, show all tasks, and sort the list by CPU. Is their anything regularly showing up at more than say 15% of the CPU usage?

  • I upgraded to Yosemite and my Imac is running very slow.

  • My four year old iMac is running much slower than when it was new.  Any suggestions on cleaning out the cob webs?

My four year old iMac is running much slower than when it was new.  Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to "clean it up" and get it running like it used to?

What year, screen size, CPU speed and amount of RAM installed?
To find out info about your system,
Click on the Apple symbol in the upper left of the OS X main menu bar. A drop down menu appears.
Click About this Mac. A smaller popup window appears. This gives you basic info like what version of OS X your iMac is running, the speed of your iMac's CPU and how much RAM is installed.
Click on the button that says More Info. A larger window appears giving you a complete overview of your iMac's hardware specs.
Highlight all of this info and copy/paste all of this into another reply to this post, editing out your iMac's serial number before actually posting the reply.
This will tell us everything about your iMac so we may begin to help with your iMac issues.
How full is your Mac's hard drive?
Locate your iMac's hard drive icon on the OS X desktop. Click the icon once, then use the keyboard key combination Command-I. This will give you additonal info about your iMac's internal hard drive.
Post this info in your reply here, also.
Here are some general tips to keep your Mac's hard drive trim and slim as possible
You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your Mac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your other Mailboxes and other Mail categories to see If there is other mail you can archive and/or delete.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
To find other large files, download an app called Omni Disk Sweeper.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

  • IMac 27" running very slow after 10.6.6 update

After updating to the newest OSX build my iMac is running extremely slow. Boot times are the same but once I'm in OSX it takes twice as long to do anything. If I click on the systems icon it takes over 10 seconds to open. I attempted to verify my hard drive permissions and it shows an estimated time of over 4 hours. I'm at a lost as to what the **** happened. I've run several hardware diagnostics and it finds no problems. I also have boot camp installed and Windows 7 runs perfectly. Has anyone experienced something like this with the 10.6.6 build?

    Hi e-nun
I feel your pain am having exactly the same problems. I have been doing a few processes to try and see what will work. Here is what i have done to start..
    1. Boot the computer using the discs that came with the imac then load disk utility from that. Repair Disk Permissions.
    2. Clear the PRAM and the NVRAM
    3. Go to Spotlight preferences click on the Privacy Tab and drag your imac's HDD to that list. Wait for around 10-15secs then use the little minus button to remove it. Once you close the window Spotlight will start to re-index the HDD. You will notice the little dot inside the magnifying icon for spotlight.
As im writing this my Imac is currently re-indexing and fingers crossed its running better than after the update. Whilst its been reindexing i haven't had any slow down issues. Ill keep you posted...
Did you find anything else out??

  • System slows down and power up problems

    Hi,
I have a Rev A G5 iMac (1.8Ghz, 1.5GB Ram) which has been working fine since purchased in 05.
Over the 5-6 weeks we have been experiencing system slow downs. All applications will start running slower and slower (not heavy usage, mail, safari, BT client running and occasionally iMovie) to the point have to restart.
But when restarting the iMac it will not power up, it starts and 1 sec later shuts down. So I leave for a while and try again, and it will work although the fan is extremely loud.
I was having to restart every few days but now its to the point of a few times a day.
have run hardware test and all is fine...and as do not have applecare want to see if can do anything myself before taking in for a quote/repair.
Oh another thing, the superdrive will not burn via finder anymore only via toast...that started at the same time as the rest.
    many thanks
    Zara

Hi Zara - have you tried opening the back and vacuuming out several years accumulation of dust? You can also try resetting the PRAM and the SMU and see if that helps.
    Please post back,
    Miriam

  • My imac has become extremely slow

Hi, I have a 4 year old 27 inch imac, running 10.10.3; it has become extremely slow to boot up, to open apps and to get online.  I'm a fairly heavy user of dropbox, and I am wondering if that is the issue -- other than that I run very run of the mill apps -- itunes, word/ppt/excel/, ical, imessage, firefox and safari, adobi acrobat, some use of iphoto.  Suggestions?

Hi Old Toad -- this is what I got on Etrecheck:
    Problem description:
iMac is running very slow, especially when opening apps, and esp. when opening browsers.  (And within browser — e.g., gmail v. slow).

  • HT5361 I want to permanently remove years old emails from my IMac Mountain Lion system.  How can I do this by year instead of laboriously doing it one message at a time?

I want to permanently remove years old emails from my IMac Mountain Lion system.  How can I do so by year rather than slowly removing one message at a time?  Many thanks.

Another option is to create a smart mailbox that includes emails with date received before a desired date.
Then, select one message in the Smart Mailbox and cmd-A to select all. Then delete.
