IMac 320GB HD only shows 298GB total ?

I am pretty new to the MAC world and noticed that my newly purchased IMac 24" which comes with a 320GB hard drive, only shows a total size of 298GB. Where did the other 22GB go? Does this file system use it up for something I can't see?
Thanks in advance,

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Phillip is unnecessarily harsh but what he says is true. If you look at the iMac pages online you'll see a disclaimer:
{quote:title=http://www.apple.com/uk/imac/specs.html:}{quote}
1GB = 1 billion bytes; actual formatted capacity less.
I installed a 320GB drive in my 2003 iMac and have 297.97GB capacity. This applies to all computers and systems and is much more noticeable in these days of massive hard drives.
BTW, MAC = Media Access Control, Mac is short for Macintosh. . Welcome to the Mac World!

  • Imac wont boot only shows flashing question mark folder (long)

Imac 21.5 late 2009 with no upgrades.
Had previously turned on bootcamp inadvertently without installing Windows OS. On shutdown accidently picked start Windown on next startup and since has only shown flashing question mark.
Tried to boot to single user mode, safe mode or verbose mode without success.
Could not find orginal OS disk that came with computer so used OS disk from a 13' Macbook pro (mid 2009). Would boot to OS installer but got error when it tried to install. Was able to get past this and use Disk Utility and did repair permisions and repair disk without change in result.
Tried rest PRAM and NVRAM without success.
Then found that the OS disk from the Macbook was a different build and finally found OSX installation disk that came with computer and will boot to MAC OSX installer. Did repair disk permision and repair disk without change.
    Reloaded OSX without change.
With disk in will boot to single user or verbose mode but I dont know enough to know what to fix from there. I am assuming somehow boot files have become corrupt.
    Any help? Thanks

I didn't read your complete post however by the subject line alone it appears your computer cannot locate it's startup volume per: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1440
The easiest way to remedy that is to restart while holding down the C key on your keyboard. After the computer has restarted then go to System Preferences - Startup Disk and choose the internal HD and then click restart to test.

  • I have 8GB memory, but only shows total of 6GB

I have an early 2009 iMac with 8GB of memory, and before I upgraded to Mavericks, it would show a total of 8GB between used and available memory in my memory cleaning app.
Now, it only shows a total of 6GB between used and available memory.
Any reason it's not reporting the full 8GB of available memory?
    Thanks,

What memory cleaning app and why are you using it...?
How much does "About This Mac" report..?
How much does "Activity Monitor" report..?

  • Disk Utility Only Shows HD And Not Superdrive?

When I open Disk Utility on my Snow Leopard iMac, I am shown the HD, the disc burning drive and any disk images on the computer.
However, when I open DU on my Tiger (OSX 10.4.11) eMac I only see the HD . . . . . no sign of the disc burning drive unless I insert a CD/DVD.
    Is this normal?

Yes, Ian, that is the way 10.4.11 works on my iMac also. Only shows the HD.

  • I have an IMAP mailbox that seems to only show mail 7 days old on my iMac running Snow Leopard. However, all old emails that I have not deleted are showing up on my macbook pro running the next OS (Lion?).  How do I get all my old emails back on my iMac?

I have an IMAP mailbox that seems to only show mail 7 days on my iMac running Snow Leopard.  However, on my MacBook Pro I can see all old mail that I have not deleted.  It is running the next operating system (Lion?).  Does anyone know how I can get all my old mail back on my iMac.  It is my primary computer and I need some of those old messages.  I have tried to rebuild the mailbox but it has not done anything.

I have tried to rebuild the mailbox to no avail.  The mailbox behavior says:  Drafts (not checked) store draft messages on the server, Notes (checked) show not in Inbox, Sent (checked) Store sent messages on the server Delete sent messages when (option never selected), Junt (not checked) store junk messages on the server Delete junk messages when (option never selected), Trash (checked) moves deleted messages to the Trash mailbox and (checked)  store deleted messages on the server Permanently erase deleted messages when (one month old option selected).
I have not set up any rules that I know of other than a signature, in the very least I have not changed any.

The first thing to do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You — not the previous owner — must do that. How you do it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
    1. You don't own another Mac.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. For early MBA models, you may need a USB optical drive or Remote Disc. You should have received the media from the previous owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
    2. You do own another Mac.
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to create a bootable USB device and boot the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can boot from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
Once booted in Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. You will need the Apple ID and password that you used to upgrade. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
Then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.
    3. Other issues
If you see a lock screen when trying to boot from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
If the previous owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to  authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.
When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information.

  • My imac wont turn on anymore. it only shows a picture of a folder and question mark

I cant get my imac to turn on. It will only show a folder with a question mark in it,.

Your Mac can't find any bootable device. That could be because of two things:
    1. The PRAM "forgot" the startup disk.
    2. The hard disk is damaged.
First, press Option key while your Mac is starting and check if you see the OS X partition. If you see it, choose it and when OS X has booted up, open System Preferences > Startup Disk and select the OS X partition.
If not, the hard disk is damaged. If you have OS X Lion as you indicate, press Command, Option and R keys while your Mac is starting to start into Recovery. Then, open Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD in the sidebar and repair the disk. If it doesn't work, take the Mac to an Apple Store.
If you didn't make a backup, use DiskWarrior to recover your files. It could not work on some ocassions.
Also, there's a problem with the 1 TB Seagate iMacs hard disks sold between October 2009 and July 2011 and they are being replaced for free. Check if you can get replaced the hard disk for free > http://www.apple.com/support/imac-harddrive

  • Why is 8gb only showing total memory of less than 6.5?

why is 8gb only showing total memory of less than 6.5?

Because the difference is due to the operating system taking up most of the diference and the other is how GB is advertised and actually used.

  • Showing Sub-Totals only for Specific Column in PowerView

    Hi,
Is there a way of showing the sub-totals only for specific columns in a PowerView Matrix?
I am only aware of showing the sub-totals for all or non of the columns.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Justin

    Hi Justin,
According to your description, you want to get sub-totals specific columns within columns group. Right?
In this scenario, we can use IIF() function in expression to achieve your goal. The expression will only return the total value when the column value is a specific value, otherwise we can make it return nothing. Try the following expression:
    IIF(Fields!Column.Value="[specific value]",Sum(Fields!Total.Value),nothing)
We have tested this scenario in our local environment. Here are screenshots for your reference:

  • When I record anything or share my screen on my iMac it only shows my mouse. What am I doing wrong/how do I make it show the rest of the screen too?

I am trying to record my screen on my iMac for a youtube video. I am using Debut (a screen recording program) and whenever I record the screen, the resulting video is always only showing my mouse movements and not anything else i.e the actual windows etc. This also happens when I share my screen on skype! How do I make the other parts of the screen show up and what am I doing wrong?!
    Thanks!

    Hello Ian,
No idea really, but are there other computers locally that you can test regular Screen Sharing locally both ways?

You already have a wireless router or have just bought one, or do you have an ad hoc connection from iMac to AppleTV?
If things worked in the other location this all point to poor network performance/connectivity. It may be the connection is intermittently lost - small files transfer ok, but interruptions during longer transfers scupper the process.
Interference from cordless phone bases or microwaves (and neighbours devices) might also cause connectivity issues.
Signal strength bars are often not that useful, but will indicate connection to the main wireless device they connect to - so AppleTv may have a good connection to the router but a poor iMac connection to router is not displayed by AppleTV which only shows the connection to the first device in the chain.
You could consider some home mains newtorking plugs such as those made by Devolo but they usually have to be on the same mains ring.

My Intel iMac only shows a blinking folder with a question mark when powered up.
I did run the hardware test of the original installer disc and no trouble was found and I am out of options. Does anybody have any advice what to do next

If the drive shows errors then repair, if after the 3rd pass of Repair Disk in Disk Utility it still shows errors it's telling you it's time to be replaced. Take it to your local Apple Store or AASP for repair, when it comes back use your backup (either Time Machine or bootable clone) to restore so you can pick up where you left off.
