IMac 333 wont shutdown

My iMac 333 blue, wouldnt shutdown with OS 8.6. I figured it's time to update to OS 10.3.9 and I did, wiping out the hard drive and doing a clean (reformatting) install. Now the iMac wont shutdown AGAIN. It restarts ok. Is this a hardware thing? OS 8.6 is gone, only 10.3.9 is on it...??????

Steve,
I'm not sure about the not shutting down thing, maybe a disk permissions or a preferences thing would be my guess. (Do you have an automatic file back up on your system that is set to back up everything before shutdown?)
When I updated my iMac from Classic OS to OS X, I thought I had to update from 8.6 to 9.2.1 so that classic would work on OS X. I also had to update the computer firmware. If you didn't use the correct firmware update, that might cause both of your problems.
Just a guess.
as always,

    Hello,
I installed 10.2 on my imac and it works fine except for the fact that when I restart, my display geometry settings go back to default. Anybody know why? I even purchased and installed a new internal backup battery but that did not help.
    Please help! Thank you...

Have you tried Repairing Permissions and then doing the right Customization and then Shutting down properly?

You are welcome. I find the "static links" (as they are called) from their specific or general hardware pages. For example an Apple Keyboard static link can be found at the Mac mini - Accessories page. (below)

  • Transfer Outlook Express Address Book & emails from old iMac 333 to iMac G5

Trying to import my old address book and a collection of emails from Outlook Express 5.0.6 to Mail2.0.2. I've tried everything that Outlook requires and no luck yet. I am reluctant to reload all those names, addresses, etc. into my new iMac G5. Also, I have many emails from my old iMac 333 and need them for my new G5 mail files. Can I read them into Mail 2.0.2 ?
    Thanks for any advice.

    iMAC G5 /iBOOK   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   iMAC 333 & iMAC 350

I was having no success at all when I was trying to import mail data from Outlook Express to Mail on the same office G4 Tower where I just upgraded to Tiger, where all the Apple docu says it is possible...
    Then I realised,
    1. When in X, when importing data from OE, Classic has to be booted, my only and originally OS 9 (installed X on another partition) is to "heavily loaded" with a lot of 3rd party extensions etc, it never loaded completely
Solution: Install another clean and lean copy of OS 9 somewhere else, then designate this as your Classic, and make sure you only have one copy of OE and one set of your Identities etc in the Document folder
    2. The easier way out is if you have Office X or Office 2004, use Entourage to import everything from OE, then use Mail to import from Entourage.
    Cheers

  • Imac does not shutdown

My IMac does not shutdown through the normal operating procedures.  I have to press the reset/shutdown button in the back.  Plus it constantly freezes up.  I have over 100GB of free space.  Total capacity is approx 500GB

Open up Disk Utility, and select Macintosh HD on the left, then click on "Verify Disk" in the bottom right. See if it checks out or not.

  • Is Partitioning absolutely required for imac 333

I have an Imac 333 tray with a 6gb drive. Is partitioning required to run OSX and OS9?
    Thanks

Partitioning is only required for that model if you install a hard drive larger than 8GB. Then you have to make an first partition for OSX that's just slightly under 8GB in size. OS9 and OSX can coexist in the same partition.
With a small boot partition, you will need to be very aware of space as you install software. In such cases, i have the installer apply the bare minimum of files. If you install all the printer drivers in 10.3, for example, you will have used up one gig of your drive space for printers you don't own. Avoid the foreign language support unless you need it.

  • After security update 2011-005, iMac fails to shutdown

    Hi All,
I just upgraded my work computer running OS X 10.6.8 to latest security patch (2011-005), and after that my iMac can't shutdown anymore.
The process that is hanging is Apache Tomcat 6. Exactly org.apache.catalina.stratup.Bootstrap
We looked into System diagnostics and there is nothing there!
It looks to me that it has to do with permissions and dependencies, but I have no clue where to look!
    PLEASE HELP!!!
    Many thanks,
    Sava

Don't remove any screws to do an SMC reset:
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • Installing OSX on imac 333

How do I install a retail version of Panther on imac 333? How much RAM and hardrive space is needed? Thanks.

    Hannah Groce...
You need the minimum 128MB to boot Mac OS 10 more is needed depending on how you intend to use it. AppleWorks probably will work fine but surfing the net may be a challange. I would say the max - 512MB is expected to do much of anything.
HD space... The more the better, however you are limited to around 7.8GB in your bootable partition, should a larger than 8GB drive be installed.
In my opinion I would not spend the money on a limited machine. When we add things up, we can be half to three quarters of the way, to a new machine with better specs.

  • Replacing imac 333 motherboard...help!

I purchased an iMac 333 for my mother last month and we just found out that the ethernet port is shot after many attempts of trying to go online. The guy I purchased it from told me that the motherboard needed to be replaced. Could someone give me tips on how to replace it myself or point me in the direction of a site that can help me out. Thanks.

  • I have a iMac that wont start up after it sits for a short time

I have a iMac that wont start up after it sits for a short time. I changed out the hard drive and reinstalled Leopard. If I mess with it a little I can get it to start up usually by repairing the hard drive with another computer, one time I just held down the P-R-option and command keys and it worked. Once its on it will restart no problem but if it sits for and hour or so it will get stuck either in the grey screen or blue screen. I also pushed the smu button but didnt work. Please help? Thank you.

For this type of question, we need to know which iMac you have. This forum covers G3, G4, and G5 iMacs that have different hardware, and any recommendations are better handled if people know which you have. For starters, do "About this Mac" from your Apple menu and look at teh processor type.
You also need to tell us the version of the Mac OS you have, also avaiabe from "About this Mac.
If the processor type says "Intel," you have a newer iMac that this forum covers and should report in the area for current iMacs here:

  • IMac hangs on shutdown

Hi there, I have just installed iLife 08 and iWork 08 this afternoon and since then my iMac won't shutdown properly. I shutdown as normal, but the machien hangs with the pale blue screen before shutting down. I have to power off manually. I have never had to do this before. Also, when I power up now, my bluetooth mouse and keyboard do not rspond until I switch off and switch back on the keyboard - this then unfreezes them. How wierd! Hope you guys can help!

Launch "activity monitor" by typing in "act" in spotlight (and then selecting the program in spotlight) to see what is running. Some things are supposed to be running but some things running could prevent a shutdown because the program causing the problem needs to finish its process before letting the computer shut down.

  • Booting iMac 333 from Firewire CD drive

    Hi all,
The CD-ROM in my iMac 333 doesn't work any more*; I've replaced it once with no effect so it's possible that the drive is not the issue. I do have a Que! firewire CD burner that works perfectly - it reads, writes and rips CDs fine.
However, I see eventually the need to be able to boot from a CD, such as to update the OS. I have tried several keyboard startups, such as holding down either the C or the T keys during startup, in the hopes of getting it to boot from the CD in the external drive, but to no avail. Does anyone know of a technique to get it to boot from the external?
    Thanks!
    Keith.
*it spins any data or CD but does not recognize it. No CD inserted ever shows up on the desktop or on iTunes. I can eject the CD anytime I want since the CD is never mounted, I guess

    I did miss that.
Nonetheless, Sonnet's web page makes not mention if the firewire is bootable, I kinda doubt that it is. They also mention that software needs to be installed for the firewire to work which would indicate to me that it is not bootable.

I would double check with Sonnet.
