IMac (333Mhz) - Upgrading To OSX

My Mum has a an IMac - Slot Loading 333Mhz which has OS9 (with all the updates) on it...
She would like to upgrade to OSX. Could anyone please tell me what the basic requirements are for doing this please & which OSX she can upgrade to???
As I understand it she will need to upgrade her memory (she thinks she only has 64 or 128MB's at present) to 256MB's or to to 512MB's... Is it worth upgrading to 512 as this would mean that someone would need to gain access to the second memory slot which is behind some circuitry?
She only uses the machine for surfing, emailing & word processing so I would hope that there is enough free disk space...
Would she need to have an external DVD drive to load the latest OSX & am I right in thinking that her machine would need a Firmwire Update?
Are there any other things to know / look out for??

You'll need at least 256 to run Panther properly (Apple says 128 but I feel that's pushing it). Panther can be had on CDs as can Tiger but Tiger will not run on this machine without Ex Post Facto. I would install 10.3.2 and update online to 10.3.9.
You'll need to pull the logic tray to install the memory upgrade. Check the PRAM battery as long as you're there.

Good luck with your Mum's computer. I set mine up with the same model and now I'm moving her from dial up to cable modem and a iMac 400 with 10.3.9.

IMac 333mhz upgrade recommendation request:)

I am helping a school in Eastern Europe decide what to do with 8 older imacs they inherited recently with the following specs: 333mhz processor, 6 GB hard drive, 160MB RAM (one has 288MB), OS 9.2.2
They would like to primarily do word processing and access the internet. Some computers are in a music school and would like to use garageband and be able to connect to iPod (they don't have yet) if possible.
Questions:
1. Is it advisable to upgrade these computers to some version of OSX? (versus leaving them at OS 9)
2. If so, what version (of OSX) & is 160MB RAM sufficient and is 6GB hard drive sufficient?
3. These models cannot take an airport card. Do you know of a compatible 3rd party USB wireless adapter - if so, what version of OS X does it require to work and is it compatible with USB 1.1? web site reference that you suggest......
4. What web browser (& version) will run the fastest on these models?
5. What word processor is advisable and available to purchase license for? (If MS Word, what version)

Hi Bryan,
The tray-loading iMacs can handle up to OSX Panther (10.3.9). This will give an older version of the Safari browser, but the latest versions of FireFox and Camino will work under 10.3.9--for now. No one can speculate on how much longer those browsers will run on 10.3. I find Camino faster than FireFox on my machines (same developers, Camino is just Mac-only with a little less overhead).
I believe the small hard drives and the limited RAM are going to hurt these machines for OSX. I like a minimum of 256MB (384MB better) for 10.3, and those 6GB hard drive, while OK in a strictly internet appliance, would not give much room for music or students' personal files. I'd say a 40GB drive would be minimum.
Getting six legal copies of Panther, more RAM and bigger hard drives is going to be a significant expense that has little payback other than a small performance boost. It's like sinking $500 in parts into a $1000 automobile and having it be worth $1050 after all the work. The more you can get donated the better. Is there someone in-country qualified to upgrade the iMacs or will you be going there to do the work?
If you could get someone to donate or sell cheaply some working used Emacs (G4 processors), things would get much easier. They would probably have enough OS, RAM and hard drive space to work without further investment.
I plead ignorance to wireless issues. Your are stuck with USB 1.1 on those machines--no upgrade path.
MS Office 2004 Student and Teacher Edition is US$150 and includes licenses for up to three machines. There are some freeware office suite equivalents like NeoOffice but I don't know if it is supported on such old Macs.

appears that apple has changed SMB code, and now its not possible login from windows on mac.
i installed snow leopard and now works fine.
apple is capable to make it run paying new license of smb code, but isnted of this, apple has created new protocol smbx and now, all others need to adapt your code to apple..

I recommend to check www.icloud.com, are your contacts shown there?
If not -> Something might be not set up correctly on you iOS devices.
Also.. Simple but maybe occuring: Contacts -> Preferences -> Accounts -> iCloud is enabled? (Should be by default if you have iCloud setup via the system preferences, but you never know..)

My iMac is only 2 years old, but has stopped playing DVDs. I upgraded to osx Lion. Could that be the problem?

Why is my imac running so slow after upgrading to osx 10.9.1?

Ever since i upgraded to OSX 10.9.1 a couple of weeks ago, my mac runs slow, hangs up with the beach ball and generally has become a pain in the neck to work with. I can't identify any one program specifically, it's pretty much everything. I want Mountain Lion back!!! Anyone else having this problem?

IMac 233 upgrade

I have an old 233 iMac which i put into storage and now would like to give to my 6 year old daughter.
Upgrading the memory is my first port of call so it can use OSX, but my second is a little more difficult.
Can i take the old SO-DIMM which i am replacing with a 256mb one and insert it in the V-RAM giving 32mb of video memory?
I know it says the maximum is 8mb so will i have to find an 8mb stick ( ? ) or will it only use 8 of the 32mb?

Why does my iPhoto open and run slow since upgrading to OSX 10.8.5? I have an Imac - Intel 2.5 GHz quad core I5 - with 20 GB of memory. Before the upgrade it was much faster.

Documents will not open after upgrading to OSX 10.5.1

Purchased an iMac in October/07 (OSX 10.2) and transferred files (word processing & spreadsheet files) from an old Mac running OS 8.6.
All files were copied over and I was able to open them using 'Pages', etc but once I upgraded to OSX 10.5.1, an error is generated (the error is: cannot execute binary file) if I try to open them.
All the copied files (word processing & spreadsheet files) now seemed to be labelled as 'exec' so I'm assuming the operating system considers them to be executables.
Is there something I can do to fix this?

Yes. It's the 10.5.1 Combo update.
Download the Combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again +try!

Keyboard no longer works with Citrix Receiver after upgrading to OSX 10.9.5

I use Citrix Receiver to connect to my office systems when I work from home. The office systems are Windows 7 based and I work at home on a Imac. Up to yesterday everything worked like a dream. Then I upgraded from OSX 10.9.4 to 10.9.5 and sine then my keyboard has stooped responding when I am connected to my office system. When I close Citrix the keyboard works OK. I tried to connect using a MacBook still on 10.9.4 and there are no problems with the keyboard in Citrix. What do I do to get the keyboard to work under 10.9.5?

It works good together with OSX 10.10 Yosemite.
I think they did a great job releasing an update so soon after the release of Yosemite.
I upgraded to Yosemite on a mid 2011 iMac. It all performs better that OSX 10.9.5. No issues so far.
