IMac 400 dim and jumpy screen
Sorry if this has been covered already -- I could not readily find a thread about this. Like some here, my DV 400mhz iMac screen is dim, and none of the things I've read here will brighten it up. I have to go into calibration and make some odd changes to get it bright enough to read certain web pages, for example.
But I learned to live with that. Now the screen is also "jumping," or wiggling from time to time -- just enough movement to be perceptible, and annoying. I fear the whole thing will be going out before I take steps to fix it, or replace it.
Can you hook up an external monitor to an old 400 mhz iMac? Any other ideas about the jumpiness and dimness? Thanks.
Sounds like the high voltage is going out. The jumping would be the HV filter caps going south.
A standard VGA monitor can be attached under the back behind the oval perforated grill.

I recently got a refurbed iMac with OSx adn the screen jumps/flicks every 10-15 seconcds. suggestions?
If you purchased it from Apple, you are covered by the warranty - take advantage of it and call them as that appears to be a graphics issue.

The screen of my iBook G4 (1GHZ) is going from light to dim and flashing a lot. What's wrong? Further, if that's the case, can i get it fixed? If my screen goes bad, the whole thing is at least temporarily useless, so I need to get this figured out.
Update: I have updated the OS to 10.6.7 It's a 2.4Ghz Core duo with 4 Gig RAM.
I tried to update my profile but the procedure seems to be different now??? -
I spilled water onto my iPhone. It turns on..says searching..then dims and an endless circle appears. Any help me with this???
Turn it off. Though it's probably too late to prevent permanent damage.
Make an appointment at the genius bar of your local Apple store. Try to arrive with a positive attitude and your credit card. An out of warranty replacement is US$149.
Sometimes they can be salvaged by placing them in a bag of uncooked rice in a warm, dry place for several days to a week. The rice will absorb as much moisture as it can. If you've had it on though, and are experiencing the symptoms you describe, and/or have attempted to charge it, it is probably toast. -
IMac OS problems and Heat/Screen Issues
At this moment in time I am running my Intel Based iMac with Solo windows Vista and no OSX, i am doing this because while i was using boot camp with windows Vista something damaged the OSX and made booting it impossible,
i completely wiped the imac and tried to install OSX Leopard from the 2 grey discs that came in the box, however installation would not complete.
My Second issue is with the screen, after a while of use it does 1 of two things,
The screen because completely blurry and all pixels become the wrong colour.
The screen goes black.
Any suggestions because the things that are happening don't look very "healthy"Hi
You do know you are in the XServe RAID Forum don't you?

Part of what you're describing could be a hardware problem? In which case is it still under warranty? Is it under 12 months old? Do you have AppleCare? If the answer is yes to any or all of these then take it back to where you bought it from. Or an Authorised Apple Reseller or Repair Specialist. They should be able to have a look at it for you and effect an appropriate repair. Hopefully under the warranty.
I see you're based in London? Why don't you drop it into the Apple's HQ on Regent Street. The Genius Bar should be able to advise you further?

Imac locks up and flashing screen
Hi All,
I keep getting a lock up and a flashing screen on my imac running lastest mountain lion. Here is a link to a video i took of the flashing screen. The machine locks up and requires a hard reboot. I tried removing flash and reinstalling prior to this event, but it continues. Only locks up after at least 20 minutes use.
http://youtu.be/btlqhNvL_90
Any ideas?
PaulI also reset PRAM and SMC, but it didn't fix it. More so now it just seems to lock up while using Safari. It freezes for a few minutes and then the computer reboots itself.
Here is the diagnostic codes if it means anything to anyone.

The ICloud log in screen is dim, and will not respond to any data entry
My IMac wants me to sign in to ICloud, but the screen is slightly dim and will not accept any data

When I start up my imac, I get a blue screen. The wheel spin and the screen gets brighter for a second, then the blue screen dims and it repeats with the wheel.
Are you referring to the startup screen which is normally gray with the dark gray Apple logo or are you referring the login screen which is typically blue? If it's the latter you might give this a try:
Clearing Caches to Fix Login Problem
You will need to type some Unix commands. If you are not comfortable with this, I don't know of anything other than a re-install. But if you are careful, you should be OK. I recommend you print this out in a largish mono-spaced font so you don't miss any spaces (or add extra ones). Note that case is important.
Be careful. Some of these commands are dangerous, since you are going to be root.
Start up in Single-user Mode. When this has finished you will see a prompt ending in '#', although there may be other messages. Enter the following commands after the prompt:
/sbin/fsck -fy
Press RETURN. Wait a few seconds for 8-10 lines of output. If the last line says repairs were carried out, repeat this command until you get a message 'The volume <yourdiskname> appears to be OK'. Then continue with:
/sbin/mount -uw /
cd /Library/Preferences
rm com.apple.loginwindow.plist
rm com.apple.windowserver.plist
cd /Library/Caches
rm -r *
cd /System/Library
cd /System/Library/Caches
rm -r *
reboot
Press RETURN after each command.
This should now take you to a proper login screen after the normal boot sequence. You should then Repair Permissions by using Disk Utility (in your /Applications/Utilities folder).
If it's the former then reinstall OS X. For Snow Leopard:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
Do the following:
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

I tried to update my iPod 4th generation while it was charging and when I came back to check on it the screen was red and it wouldnt go off, and my ipod wasnt charging like it was supposed to. I found out how to get the color of the screen off but my ipod always has the low battery thing and when I charge it sometimes the screen turns blue or the apple logo comes up bright and then it gets dim and stays there. My ipod wont turn on, and I really want it to work again. Help me please! Also, I noticed my ipod battery hasnt been lasting long as it should efore this happened.
Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order. -
I went to use my ipod touch 8GB but it wasn't working, when i looked closer it was on just very very dim. The brightness is turned up all the way and the screen is practically black.. does anyone know how to fix it?
Try:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Reset all settings If yu can see the screen enough to do it)
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
- Restore from backup
- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
- Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since you have a hardware problem.

My 3rd gen iPod touch has a very dim/dark screen and no screen response. I've restored it, still nothing, put a new screen and digitizer and still nothing. I've reset it a 1000 times and nothing works. Is there a way to fix this? It previously had "activation required" on the screen but now it just says "ipod" what do I do now?
Could be due to many things. You could have damaged something during the screen replacement. I would take it to someone with more experience.

Ipod touch screen is dimmed and won't brighten
i turned my ipod touch on one day and it was fine then the next thing i knew was the screen dimmed like it does before it goes into it's lock mode, but when i push the menu or power button the screen stays dimmed and i have tried several things to brighten the screen but nothing works. can anyone help me with this problem because i can't use my ipod touch anymore now?
- Double tap the screen with three fingers and go to Settings>General>Accessibility and turn off Zoom and Voice over too if you want.
- Alternately, you can connect to your syncing computer and go to the Summary pane. Click on Configure Universal Acess and turn off Zoom and Voice Over (if you wish). -
I have a 5 month old iMac running Lion and W7 with the latest version of boot camp . It has been operating flawlessly until I went to reboot into Mac tonight. Screen went black, and system is unresponsive. I've tried force quitting and turning power off. Hard drive starts, there's a small amount of drive activity and that's it.
Hi Jane, your info may still be there, look in the Users folder at root of the drive, how many users are there there?
It sounds like this may have happened...
Return to default desktop, apparent "loss" of home directory, (it can happen spontaneously too)...

I bought a MacBook Air and wish to communicate with old iMac G5 2003-5 (sorry can't remember the year). The screen on the iMac is blank and will not come on but the hard drive still works. Can anyone tell me the cable I need to with the iMac & how to do it. I have music and photos on the iMac I cannot access.
Also, do I need to special CD/DVD external drive/burner to import music CD's into iTunes? I have tried and it keeps coming up with formatting problems.
Many thanks. Jaxdwb
I have looked for what you said and come up with these 2 cables. Are these the correct ones I need?

When I turn on my iMac, it shows a black screen and says 'No bootable device - enter boot cd and press any key'.
I'm not sure what to do, I did not recieve a cd with my mac to boot it up (I ordered it online).
Also I can't find my harware serial number (I've tried many times to input what I thought it may be from my receipt). I saw that I need this number to contact apple support, my 90 day complimentary support is still valid so I wish to contact them.
I don't know much about apple products as this is my first apple computer so any information is helpful.Hold down the Alt/Option-key at startup of your iMac to get the Boot Selection screen.
From that choose to boot into OSX.
Once in OSX go to System Preferences then Startup Volume and reset your OSX to be the default.
The new iMacs have OSX 10.7 Lion preinstalled and don't come with any CD/DVD anymore.
Instead OSX Lion includes a new feature called "Lion Recovery".
Have a read here About Lion Recovery
