IMac 400DV Won't Boot-Gray Screen

I'm having trouble with a 400mhz iMac DV.
When starting up, there is no chime, and it gets to the gray screen right before there would normally be the Mac OS logo...and does nothing further.
The hard drive is spinning, but does not chatter as when booting. I get the same result when trying to boot from a CD.
I have replaced the battery, reset the PMU, swapped out the RAM, and reset the PRAM.
When resetting the PRAM, it DOES chime, and seems to act normally until getting to the gray screen. If I hold down the "option" key at startup, I do get to the "choose a startup disk" screen, but it makes no difference which disk I choose.
There is no flashing ? or any other indication it can't find the hard drive. BTW,, it is running OS 9.2.x
Any Ideas?

  • MBP 13" Won't Boot, Gray Screen w/ ? Folder, Hard Drive is perfectly fine

I have a 13" Macbook Pro that won't boot up. When I used my install disk to get to disk utility, it did not recognize that there were any drives in the computer.
    I tried:
Removing the hard drive and plugging it into another computer using a SATA to USB adapter. It worked fine and I could see all of the files on the hard drive. I ran the disk utility on another Mac to see if there were errors. It found none. I then restarted the other Mac and selected to boot from the USB drive and it booted perfectly fine. I tried reconnecting and seeing if it would boot now for some reason (machines are funny like that). It didn't; same problem.
    Next, I tried:
Installing a different hard drive to see if the disk utility program would see it. It did not.
    Then, I tried:
Connecting the original hard drive to the defective Mac using the SATA to USB adapter and trying to boot from USB. This worked fine.
    Conclusions so far:
-The Hard Drive is 100% ok
-The Hard Drive Cable MAY be defective
-If the Hard Drive Cable is not at fault, there MAY be a problem with the logic board.
I was wondering if anyone has any further ideas for me before I try swapping out the hard drive/infrared cable?
Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have pretty much the same problem, although I don't get the question mark, I get the gray screen with a symbol like a "no entry" sign. In other words, circle with a slash through it. Very odd. Never seen that before. I booted from two different external drives and the computer boots fine. The internal drive mounts on my desktop and is accessible, nothing is wrong. I cloned the internal drive to one of the external drives and booted from that fine as well.
The disk has been repaired via Drive Genius. I rebuilt the directory through Drive Genius and it seems to run just fine.
It seems it may be as simple as a bad or loose cable, but since the icon is something I'd never seen I wanted to see if anyone knows what that icon might mean. The only new thing I did last week was defrag the drive through Drive Genius.
Oh also, I replaced the battery last year from OWC. The glue holding the silver outer plate has come off so that battery, though working fine, is a bit of a pain. Since the battery is lose inside that casing, I was wondering if maybe there is a strain internally. I don't know the wiring that's near the battery connection.
    Thanks for any help

  • Imac g4 won't boot; black screen

    Hi,
I have a question about a friend's imac g4 (1.25 gz). When I press the power button I can hear the startup chime, but the screen stays black. At first I thought it was the display, so I started up in target disk mode; however, the hard drive would only show up in disk utility on the host computer. When I tried to verify and repair the disk I got an error. Here is a screen shot of what it said.
    http://img812.imageshack.us/i/diskerror.png/
Was this error because disk utility said the hard drive wasn't mounted?
The imac's CD drive doesn't work, so I tried to use an external CD drive to boot from the install disk, but it didn't come up with the boot options when I held down the option key--just a black screen. If the hard drive was bad, would it cause a black screen?
    Thanks in advance,
    Peter

Keep in mind that you have to repair a drive with a Disk Utility version that is the same OS as the one you are trying to repair. Example, 10.5's Disk Repair on a 10.5 system. Otherwise you will get erroneous errors. If you did that, read on.

No, it said Disk Utility's Disk Repair couldn't fix it. It may be so damaged that it will not mount.
If Disk Utility can't fix it, you'll need a more robust utility to repair it.
I would recommend DiskWarrior. It is the best at directory repairs. It rebuilds then actually replaces your old directory. I feel every Mac owner should have a copy.
It also has File System repair now and hard drive S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics.
Make sure you get the disk so you can boot up on it to run repairs. You can also install it on another drive and run it from there to repair this one. DW works faster that way. But sometimes a badly damaged system can be deemed unrepairable by the installed version, but if booted and repaired from the DW disk it may be repairable. This has happened to me.
I use DW once a month to try and catch errors in my system from getting too far out of hand. It has repaired every little and big issue I have ever had with my three Macs.
If your friend has a good backup, hopefully a clone of your system before you had issues, an Erase and Install may also rid you of this issue. But, beware! You will lose everything on the drive with this procedure. Let us know if you need help with that!
    Good Luck! DALE

iMac that won't boot up!   When power is switched on it chimes, Apple logo appears, then loading bar, then spinning wheel.  Bar seems to load up and gets to around 25%, then reverts to the start again, gets to about 20% on the bar and then switches itself off leaving a black screen.  Tried all the remedies on internet with no avail so would welcome some advice other than binning what is a relatively new computer.  Earliest appointment Apple could offer was Thursday 17th, really useful for a business user _ not impressed,

You've probably tried this, but will it Safe Boot? Restart holding down the Shift key until you see the grey progress bar. You'll need to input your admin password during bootup. If it will boot you can then try to eject the disk using the various suggestions here that you haven't tried already:

  • IMac 2007 won't boot

    I have a strange problem.
My 24" iMac 2007 won't boot.  It won't boot either from CD/DVD or anything.  It will display the white screen with the Apple logo, and the spinning wheel under it, until the spinning wheel will stop spinning.  Using my old Linux knowledge, I find that it seems like it freezes on "Login Window Application".  Before this happened the iMac would occationally freeze, creating strange wave-patterns across the screen.
    I have tried the following:
    1) safe mode - same result
    2) reset NVRAM - same result
    3) single user - I can fix the filesystem, delete loginmanager files - same result
    4) boot from Apple CD - same result
Every time the computer hangs, the strange waves will appear on the screen.  My guess it is the video card that's causing this - and I need to replace it.
Can anyone give me heads an idea to confirm my suspicion - or to find the real culprit?
    regards

OK, thanks, that was a helpful reply.
Somewhere in my browsing, I gathered that any Mac OS install disk would have the AHT.  After searching around, I found the CD/DVD.
After extended testing, the AHT says nothing's wrong, but I find two things strange:
    1) the AHT tells me that my memory is 1 GB, while it is 2 GB.
    2) the AHT tells me nothing about my HDD - as if it's not there.....
I make two conclusions from that;  namely that one RAM block is faulty and the HDD is invisible seen from AHT.  The latter would stress me immensely, if I hadn't seen the entire drive from single user mode before.  There could be some faulty sectors though that would mean that the OS is behaving strangely.
Please advise on hints on where you would go next - anyone?

  • IMac G5 won't boot from CD drive, Please Help

My iMac G5 won't boot from the CD drive. There is no operating system on the hard drive so I want to install a fresh copy of Leopard. I have tried a couple different methods, but I keep getting the same end result. The first method I tried was booting from the CD drive by holding the C key during start up. The Leopard disc was automatically ejected after about 20-30 seconds. The second method I tried was booting the iMac to the "question mark file screen," which is when I inserted the Leopard disc. Usually on other Mac computers, this is when the computer will show the Apple logo and prompt you with the installation process. Not this iMac, it just ejects the disc shortly after I insert it. I'm not sure if it's the CD drive that is having the issue, the hard drive, or something else.
If you have any ideas, they would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you,
    Chris

Where did you get the CD from?
If it is from another Mac, it is probably specific to the hardware in that Mac and is not capable of boot your iMac.

  • IMac G5 won't boot up

My iMac g5 won't boot up. The indicator comes on, but the screen stays black. Help!

Looks like you have both an Intel and an older iMac G5 PPC. Do you hear the chime on startup?
The chime is quite meaningful. It means the computer passed the P.O.S.T / Power On Self Test.

Upgrade from snow leopard 10.6.8 to montain lion on a iMac system won't boot getting a crossed out circle

Clean install OS.10.6.8 update it completly. May be you ignored some firmware update.
    I have two incedents.
My thunderbolt port stopped working after upgrading to ML 10.8. I booted from external 10.6 , 10.7 still didnt work. Then i clean installed 10.6.8 and ran software update it updated the thunderbolt firmware and all is well now. This firmware update for some reason didnt show up in ML 10.8.
Secondly , when i upgraded my Brother's Macbook from 10.5 to 10.6.3 it would install but stuck with crossed out circle. Then i downgraded checked for update found an efi update , then the 10.6.3 worked fine.

  • HT1492 The update-process of Xcode jan. 2013 ver. did stop whilst installing the iMac did reset and a gray screen appears with the message: Diskdrive 0 space available - then reset and gray screen again. How can I delete the update?

After allowing my iMac updating about 80 apps, the process did stop whilst installing new ver. Xcode jan. 2013 - the iMac did reset and a gray screen appears, with white letters: 0 space on Harddrive! It wasn't any sign the harddisk had not space enough, to complete the update - until the reset occours. For us and our little company a catastrophic event.
After inserting the original Snow Lepard Install Disk, the Diskmanager shows no error. No test shows any sign of error in Software. Freeing some of the empty space shows 12,5 Gb.
Perhaps this is a new kind of error happen with this combinations of the new versions of Apps and Xcode...?
Perhaps it's a know problem. I will be truely happy when finding a solution in this community.
    Kindest Regards from Scandinavia

If it's slow on startup it would be extensions loading or LaunchDaemons starting up.
You should have a look in:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
    /Library/Extensions
You can count out anything in your home folder and it shouldn't put anything in /System as that's reserved for Apple.

If you have a G5 then it's a PPC (Power PC) based iMac, this is an Intel iMac forum. Try the Gray screen appears during startup link for troubleshooting steps. I suspect the HD has crashed.

  • IMac - it won't boot up.

I have a 2 yr. old 23.5" iMac that won't boot up.  Is there a history of power supply failure or mother board failure on these macines?

Have you tried resetting the SMC? Unplug power cord for 15 seconds. Plug back in and then press power button.
Here is the link for info about resetting SMC.

  • IMac G5 won't boot, only White Screen

I have an iMac G5, no iSight, it won't boot up.  It briefly displays the Folder icon with blinking question mark, then White screen.  The first time it happened, I rebooted from an external Firewire drive, but only once.  When I tried that again, it would not boot.
I disconnected all external devices, no boot.
I can't do Target Disk mode, can't boot from external disk (except that one time-weird exception), can't boot from Install CD.   It WAS Open Firmware password protected, but I can't remember if I disabled it or not agfter my last hardware failure.  (Note to the wise:  if you have an older machine, don't use Open Firmware Password, it can greatly complicate troubleshooting when the inevitable failure happens).
I MAYBE have Open Firmware password enabled, since I
However, I CAN boot into Open Firmware (Cmd-Opt-O-F), I did manage to eject the Install CD that was stuck.
So I opened the back of the iMac.  All three LEDs are good, indicating good power supply.  I reset the SMU using the little button switch, then tried reboot with the little power button switch.  Still no reboot.  I tried re-seating the RAM cards, still no reboot.
I'm at the end of my bag of tricks.  Does anyone have a suggestion?  Is it a hardware problem?
    thanks from San Francisco

Well you could try to reset the PRAM, but if your drive is dying it won't help, although it's worth a try.
You can also try using Disk Utility:
    Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
If none of that works, it's time to take it in.

  • 27" iMac Mountain Lion won't boot (Black screen) after switching to bootcamp

    Hi,
I've been running Windows 7 in Boot Camp on Mountain Lion on my 1 month old 27" iMac without any problems. Tonight after I switched the startup partition to be boot camp the machine won't boot. I get the startup sound and the disks spin up, but the system just sits there with a Black Screen. There is no disk activity other than them spinning up.
I've tried starting the machine while holding the option key and also command-r, but nothing is happening. I have the feeling that the bluetooth keyboard has not had the chance to connect to the system before it is hanging.
I tried inserting a Lion OS DVD, thinking that it would at least complain and give me an option to boot back in to Mountain Lion. You can hear the DVD spin up and then go idle.
Any suggestions on how I can recover the situation?
    Thanks in advance
    Mick

The RAM mismatch might be the problem fix that.
Also backup/data recover naturally, assume TimeMacine or bootable clone is corrupted and backup only files to a storage drive
    Most commonly used backup methods
Install OS X on a external drive and boot from it.
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
Use Disk Utility on the booted clone to Erase with middle selection (Zero) the ENTIRE internal hard drive
Use Carbon Copy Cloner to reverse clone the clone onto the internal, copies the Recovery HD too.
That should fix it, or else the drive or another hardware issue
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Install/upgrade RAM or storage drive in Mac's
