IMac 5.5, OS 10.6.8 During startup, the screen aspect changes so that the image is larger than the screen; I have to scroll to find top, bottom, left, right extremes.

Screen display aspect ration suddenly changed while I was online so that I have to scroll to see the edges of the display: up, down, left, right.  I rebooted the computer and the problem persists.

System Preferences->Displays->Display and reset resolution to desired size. Don't know of anything that would change that except possibly a failing graphics card.

I have a 2006 iMac with an upgraded hard drive, 640 gb. recently i've noticed that the Finder keeps saying I only hve 12 gb available. it lists 18 items under macintosh HD and if (using Get Info) you add up those 18 items I only come up with just over 500 gb of space. Where the other 140 gb's??

  • IMac gray screen (with frozen "spinning gear") during startup

Hello all - my first post to the community, so be gentle....
I'm having a boot issue with my early 2008 Intel based iMac.  After a recent power outage, I can't get the machine to boot to OSX - the spinning gear spins for about a minute then freezes.  When I boot to Snow Leopard install CD, it gets to the same point then displays a Kernel Crash screen. I can boot to Windows using the option key on startup, but Windows runds a little weird...mostly graphic display errors (dragging windows and scrolling in web browser is slow and jumpy, games crash with strange graphics displayed).  I suspect a graphics card malfunction (the machine has an NVidia GeForce 8800GS), but I'm not convinced and I can't figure out how to test it. Here's more info:
    - I'm running OSX version 10.6 with a Boot Camp XP partition.
    - I've disconnected all peripherals except keyboard and mouse (including Ethernet)
    - I've reset NVRAM/PRAM
    - Safe boot, Single-user mode won't boot
    - I haven't pulled and reset any RAM modules yet.
Any thoughts would be appreciated - I'm three hours from the nearest Genius Bar, so I'd like to try as much at-home troubleshooting as possible.

  • Screen Goes Black During Startup (after login)

    Hello,
I have a 2005 Mac Mini PPC OS 10.4.11. This is the first problem I've had since purchasing the computer. This problem popped up out of nowhere. The screen goes black during startup just after I login into my account. I can hear the hard drive spin like it is finishing the startup process. The monitor power button blinks green.
I'm using the digital video cable. I tried switching to the VGA cable but the screen then goes black before the login screen.
The computer will startup in Safe mode.
I've tried Disk Utility (repair disk and repair permissions), Techtool Pro, Drive Genius, ColorSync Utility, Reset Pram, installed latest OS updates, and even re-installed the System twice (once because I removed all the Extension files and then the computer would not startup at all).
I've also tried removing cache files, plist files, startup files, preference files, and some or all of extension files.
The only applications I have recently installed were QuickTime Pro and a .flv movie player; both about a week before this problem started. I tried to uninstall them but could not figure out how.
What is the problem? How can this be fixed?
    Thanks.
    Richard

Howdy. I have Had the same problem as you in regards to a ViewSonic Monitor and the Mac Mini. This is my post:
    Monitor failure when switching resolutions
Using Displays with the Mac mini, Apr 1, 2008, Replies: 2
Running 10.5.2 on Mac Mini G4 1.42 Ghz with ATI Radeon 9200, 32 MB VRAM and ViewSonic VX922
When switching resolutions from 1280x1024 to 800x600 or vice versa, the monitor will cut to black and the power light on the monitor switches from solid green to flashing green. Only by combinations of powering down the mini and starting it up again with the monitor on or off will bring the monitor back to life. This problem makes it difficult to play World of Warcraft amongst other games. Any feedback in regards to this problem would be appreciated.
    Thank You!
At this point, I am unable to switch Monitor resolutions. If I do, the monitor goes black, and I have to power everything down and wait a while before I can restart.
I've resigned myself to not switching resolutions, but I'm wondering if you've had any luck.
    Thanks for your time!

  • Select OS during Startup

I have just installed Boot Camp and Windows XP. Both OS work as expected however during startup of the computer while holding down the option key, only the Mac OS icon is available. Where is the Windows icon?

I ran Boot Camp Assistant from the hard drive. I was prompted to insert the Windows install disk after that I was prompted to insert the Leopard disk. I used the Install 1 disk provided with the computer.
I have a boot camp control in Windows.

  • Macbook pro stalls during startup

My macbook pro with Yosemite stalls during startup.  I've tried Command R and ran disk utility.  The disk is ok.  I've zapped the RAM but it still stalls about 25% of the way through the startup process.

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • LE7 crash during startup

So i've been using logic express 7.0.1 for a few weeks now. everything has been running fine. i started running through a tascam us-428... but recently switched to the fw-1884. everything was great. no problems in the hardware switch.
this morning i tried to open logic and after the splash screen it just hangs. it doesn't go any further. no windows open and it stops responding.
I tried reinstalling and same thing.
    any help would be appreciated.
    thanks.
    Trev

My LE7 suddenly crashes also during startup (after almost a year working). Tried to re install, still the same problem. I did repair software, tried to get rid of old preferences, and so on.
I fixed it by removing (put it on my desk top) the file 'StuffIt Engine' from ~/Library/Application Support/. If you are not sure, find it with 'search', there is only one 'StuffIt Engine' (without any add-on).
Also I tried to figure out if I still need this file, but so far I didn't encounter other problems.
    Hope this will help.

I am no musician, but have owned an iMac now for around four years. During that time I have had Garageband installed. I have dipped in and out very occasionally as I would like nothing more than to be able to get my head around it just for my own amusement really. I would at least like to be able to record my electric guitar with loops and tracks etc, just try to be a bit creative and see what comes out. The problem that I have is that perhaps its me, but every time I try to get to grips with this software, I just can't seem to get my head around it, even to begin to do something. I have now recently downloaded 10.0.2 which is confusing in itself, as, as far as I can ascertain that is actually version 11, but I'm not even sure about that. I have also recently purchased a Rocksmith RealTone Cable to connect my guitar. I can sometimes get a sound come out, but nothing to brilliant. And every time I try to set something up, it just doesn't seem to work out. I end up hitting buttons and controls in the simple hope that I may hit the correct control in order to get some sort of result. But I'm kind of fumbling in the dark with this. I have trawled the Internet just trying to find either a good manual or video tutorials for absolute beginners, but there just simply doesn't seem to be anything of that nature out there and what there is appears always to be very sketchy and not particularly detailed in explaining anything properly, and so I always find myself seemingly jumping in with both feet and just struggling to try and find a foothold with this on how to really begin. It is so frustrating as I can see the fantastic potential of this software, but just can't understand how to use it properly. If there is anyone out there who may be able to offer me some advice with this, I would be most grateful indeed... Many Thanks.

I have now recently downloaded 10.0.2 which is confusing in itself, as, as far as I can ascertain that is actually version 11, but I'm not even sure about that.
Version 10.0.2 is the newest version and the successor to GarageBand '11 (version 6.0.5).
The '11 is referring to the iLife '11 suit of multimedia application - the older GarageBand was a part of this bundle.

  • I dislike my W8 pc, but my XP died, so I configured an iMac, is there anyway to look at software and add it in during config, other than the 3 options they provide?

For years buying a PC you had the option of choosing additional software during configuration, but the iMac only has a few options and I know Apple has more software available, so what's the deal?
I really want a decent E-mail program, nobody does it better than MS Outlook, at least in my opinion, and I hate the E-mail program that is on my iPad, so that would be something I'd really want to add, unless of course the one on the iMac is better than the one on the iPad.  You can't even create new folders, it doesn't give you direct access to your calendar, etc., I digress, sorry.

Thank you everyone, very helpful.  I still don't understand why Apple forces you into multiple transactions when buying and configuring a new computer, or why you would have to go to the app store and download the software that is suppose to come with the computer.
I think there are two reasons why Apple does it differently. There is virtually no difference between a Windows PC you buy from Dell or the one you buy from Asus. They all pretty much use off the shelf components and slap their name on the box. That left PC manufacturers with few options for differentiating themselves. One was price which is why they've all raced to the bottom and the other was service. One inexpensive service they could provide was pre-installing software. It cost them almost nothing, made them a tidy profit, and cost you more than it should have.
The second reason is that Apple likes to provide a clean service. A Mac has no stickers and no crapware. You decide what to install and, if you choose, what stickers to put on it.
why you would have to go to the app store and download the software that is suppose to come with the computer.
The software you refer to is tied to your account, not the computer. To download the software you have to provide your Apple User ID which now ties the software to you. If you sell the computer that software is still yours, as are any future upgrades you might buy for it.

  • IMac keeps shutting down during startup loading bar under apple sign

My electricity went out and came back on a minute later. When my computer started up again the font was back to original factory setting. I then restarted my computer and every time it would load up it would shutdown. The computer chimes and then reaches a grey screen with an apple sign. Below it is a loading bar. This bar loads about 10% then goes back down and loads from 0%. A couple minutes later it shuts down after staying at 0%. It keeps doing this routine every time I start the computer. I then did a command s and rebooted the computer to factory reset it. The computer still shuts down and has the old habit of reaching 10% and 0% with the loading bar but now after the loading bar is at 0% it then disappears to the Apple sign and a loading circle. It then shuts down again. This iMac was originally 10.6.8. but i believe i updated it to 10.9.4 and was purchased new around 2008. I also tried to put in a CD with Firmware Restoration CD 1.7. but that didnt work. Can anyone help? or has anyone had similar issues?

  • IMAC freezing, hang during startup, loud noise coming out from the speaker

I am using the iMAC i3 Intel based which i bought it just a month ago
Last week it hang, freeze just like that without me launch any application just yet
I hold the ON button for a restart, and it freeze during the startup
One more thing, sometimes when it freeze, there's a noise coming out from the speaker ( just like there is no signal from the TV )
Already sent it to the Apple Service Center but they tell me it is free from any error, but by the time i bring it back home, not even 12 hours, it freeze again just like that with loud noises coming out from the speaker.
Btw did i mention, sometimes there's also a screen distortion
    Please somebody help me

I've experienced similar symptoms to the original poster's description. I have an iMac 27" 2010 model. This may be related to the following:
I've looked on numerous forums regarding the freezing problem I was having. This problem would arise on a wide range of systems.
Symptoms included but were not all always present - usually when I am loading the system with games/heavy load processes:
    - Full system freeze, screen still on.
    - Loud cracking noise coming from speakers (relative to what volume was at when the freeze happened).
    - Computer asleep but I cannot wake up unless hard reset with power button.
    - My screen backlight was also damaged (permanently dimmed) near the left side, and progressively got worse over time. This was fixed (replaced LCD 27" display $600+ and covered by my creditcard extended warranty)
Basically, what I've come to realize which has not been well documented as far as I could find relating to this problem - is that the system is overheating and causing these freezing errors (and LCD damage in my case). Prologned occurances could result in different system part failures.
How do you fix the overheating problem? Give this a try, it's worked so far for me and I've actually been able to continue video/photo editing without having this annoying freeze.
Search for and download 'iStat Pro' (widget addon that lets you monitor your system temperatures... compare it before and after the fix)
Search for and download 'SMCFanControl (a great little app that allows you to change your system fan speeds) - I did not know this was possible, and have never heard the fans go this high when it was being run automatically by the system. The fan's are obviously louder when set to max, but is well worth the system cooling results.
