Imac 500dv won't connect to internet

Hi, I'm trying to help some friends out, I gave them an imac 500DV (grape?) a year ago and they haven't been able to connect to the internet. They are disabled and unable to work so money is tight, for this reason they chose Talk Talk broadband which is free with their phone contract but is known in the UK to be far from the best and badly organised. Also neither of them has a good knowledge of computers and have wasted time with the Talk Talk helpline. It had connected fine when I had it, I did a clean install of 10.2 before I gave it to them too.
I am visiting them for a day after new year and I want to get it working for them or at least find out if the problem is with the computer or the broadband provider.
They are currently running 10.2, I plan to put 10.3 on there when I visit, I'm hoping his will help as I know originally there was a line problem and many computer setting were messed with before this fault was recognised. I'll then try what I know and phone the helpline myself to see what they recommend.
Basically I'm wondering if someone could give me a list of checks I can run through (on 10.3) to see where the problem is. I might change the PRAM battery too while I'm there as it's never been done and may well need replacing. How do I do this on the old imac?
Thanks in advance for any assistance,
James

Here's a link to info about how to get at the guts of an iMac. (Since you are in the UK, no need to "translate" terminology like 'cruciform screws'!) It covers battery replacement as well as a lot of other stuff.
http://www.sterpin.net/uk/imacslotinukp.htm
As for the broadband connection, my experience (in Canada) is that the OS installer looks after it. I have seldom had to fiddle with anything. After the OS installation, which is done with the computer connected to the internet, you are prompted for personal info, including how you connect to the internet. Once the info (ISP provided user id, password etc.) are entered the connection is done for you. If that does not work, there are steps you can try. The easiest and the best is the OS 10.3 included "assistant" that will, if necessary, trouble-shoot the connection process. It goes through the 'list of checks' that you need.
Good luck.

  • IMac G5 won't connect to internet via Ethernet

So i have an iMac G5 that isn't connecting to the internet via ethernet.
I have already taken a look through all the Network Preferences, tried going through the network port configurations and setting all of that up again, created a new location for it.
I tried turning off the modem, and letting it restart - restarted the iMac - tried to set up all of these settings again.
I also created a test user account to see if it would work there - still nothing.
I hooked my own 17" MacBook Pro to it and it works perfectly. I never had to go through any settings on mine - it just worked as soon as i plugged the Ethernet cable in.
So the modem itself works - because my computer works. What else could be the problem?
I went through the Network Diagnostics on hers - all green dots and it says that the internet connection is working perfectly. It gives me an IP address - but it still won't load a webpage, and it tells me there that i am not connected to the internet. I am all out of ideas.
If anyone can help me with this it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

    What OS you using? 10.5?
My memory of 10.5 is fading so you may need to figure out the vague instructions.
To make this easier to type Macbook Pro =  MBP
When testing disable wifi & use ethernet on both machines.
Are both set to use DHCP? Or are you using manual settings?
Compare the IP addresses of the MBP & the iMac when they both use ethernet.
Compare the subnet masks too just to be sure nothing is different.
Does the iMac do any local networking at all? (e.g. is iTunes or File sharing visible on it). see *
Does it see the MBP in the sharing sidebar or can it connect to anything on the local network?
Have you connected the MBP to the iMac using the exact same cable that the iMac connects to the router?
Does the MBP work if connected to the router using the iMacs ethernet cable?
    * You will need to enable file sharing to see the shared Mac in the sidebar (or have mother service shared). Enable it in System Preferences > Sharing whilst you test.
If you are have local networking in a functional state it could be…
DNS - what is the iMac DNS set to on each Mac?
Are either of them showing a grey DNS entry in System Preferences > Network? That means the router is supplying that info.

  • Imac g5 won't connect to internet wirelessly or by ethernet

I have an early 2006 iMac g5. I haven't been able to connect wirelessly for several months now (all other computers will) and this past tuesday we had a power outage and now I cannot connect via ethernet either. My laptop will connect fine through the same ethernet cable but the g5 gets nothing.
Could this be the airport card?

    Hello Jwine2011
It could possibly be the AirPort card giving you troubles. To troubleshoot the issue of not being able to connect to Wi-Fi or wired network connection, start with creating a new network location. Check out the first article to go over that. If you are still having issues, then check out the second article with troubleshooting issues connecting to Wi-Fi.

  • Mac Mini won't connect to internet using Apple products (Safari, iTunes, AppStore). Date and time are frozen to the moment CPU is booted up. Firefox works. Cannot update.

For the past few days my Mac Mini has been having issues.
Safari won't connect to internet, but Firefox does.
Time and date are frozen. Only resets when copmuter is re-booted.
Unable to update via App Store and iTunes won't connect either.
    Please advise.

    Hi again,
Let me ask for some better help for you that is familiar with this problem (if in fact it is a similar problem with the IP address and your ISP.
The other topic concerning this can be found at:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2725608
It is a somewhat lengthy thread but may just apply to your situation.
Anyways I will see if I can call on some better help for you. Hang in there. Best to arm yourself with enough info before contacting Comcast so they might know what you are dealing with fully.

edit: I have posted for some extra help for you that may have a better idea of what's going on if it is your ISP and their modem and how it handles the IP address causing Safari and iTunes not to connect. Hang in there it may take awhile but I'm sure someone will pop in to help.

  • How to enable a disabled iPod that won't connect to internet

trying to enable my disabled 5th generation iPod touch. I have tried connecting to iTunes on the computer, which I couldn't get it to do anything. I then tried using the "Find my iPhone" website and erased the iPod. However, I got a message that says "This iPod will be erased when it connects to the internet". How do I connect a disabled/locked iPod to the internet/wifi while it is waiting to be erased because it won't connect to internet/wifi?

    Disabled
Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.
iOS: Forgot passcode or device disabled
If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    For how to restore:
    iTunes: Restoring iOS software
    To restore from backup see:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If problem what happens or does not happen and when in the instructions? When you successfully get the iPod in recovery mode and connect to computer iTunes should say it found an iPod in recovery mode.

  • Brand new Apple TV won´t connect to Internet

I just bought an Apple TV 3rd generation today. Unfortunately I´m having some issues installing it.
The Apple TV does connect to my wifi network but won´t connect to Internet. I´m currently using Time Capsule as router and thought that all Apple gadgets would have no problems connecting to each other. Both my Macbook Air and iPhone can connect to Internet when using the same wifi. I´ve tried to restart and restore Apple TV a few times and have also restarted my router. Apple suggested that when troubleshooting, but it did not work. Anyone who knows how to solve this problem?

I´m not sure what just happened, but when I woke up this morning and started Apple TV it worked. Haven´t done any changes in settings...
Out of curiosity, if the same problem occurs again how would I solve the internet connection problem. Yesterday I just saw computers/settings on the main screen.

  • New iPhone 4s won't connect to internet

New iPhone 4s won't connect to internet beyond my home wi fi. How can I correct this? I need internet where I go.

I've got exactly the same problem.
Upgraded to iOS7 all was fine.
It then prompted me to upgrade to 7.0.2 and now my iPhone 4s won't connect to Internet anymore.
There was also a carrier settings update that I accepted which could have broken things.
I've tried different APN settings but it still won't connect for me :-(
Tried a Reset Network Setting, and the problem is the same.

  • Safari won't connect to internet; Firefox will ???

Safari won't connect to internet; Firefox will???
Wierdest thing. For some reason Safari won't browse or connect to the internet anymore. When I open Safari the default address is in URL bar, but with highlighted (words only) in blue and it just sits there all day. I can't connect to any web site on the net.
However, if I open Firefox all is fine and my Mail is all fine also.
I've repaired permissions a few times and even trashed the preferences for Safari, restarted computer etc, but it still refuses to actually display anything. I get a blank white page, then after about 2 minutes it simply says "Safari can't open the page. Because the server stopped responding".
As I said, no problem with Firefox.
    Any ideas.

I thank you for getting me into the right ball-park otherwise I would not have spotted it.
You're welcome. Glad I could help.

  • IMac won't connect to internet, but can on internal network

    Hi,
I've tried resetting the router and various other things that I found on the internet.  I know its not a router problem as I am using my MBP to post this discussion.  It won't even connect to the router's internap page.  Any thoughts?

With the iMac failing to open any web page outside of your network, then I would be checking the DNS setting in System Preferences > Network > Wifi > Advanced. Compare what you have here to what the MBP has set.
But with the iMac also failing to connect to the routers internal web page then you've got additional problems beyond DNS. Using the MBP as a reference, if you make a note of the TCP/IP network settings in the Advanced section as shown above, is the iMac using the same? (apart from the IP address which should have the last number set to a different value).

  • IMac won't connect to internet anymore

I've had my iMac for over a year now and rarely had any problems connecting to the internet but now I cannot connect at all. I've read people having similar problems and it may be connected to an update but to be honest I'm not very knowledgable when it comes to this kind of thing so would really appreciate some help.
I connect wirelessly to the internet through my home network which uses a BT Home Hub router. Four other computers (all Windows) also connect and there's usually no problems whatsoever. I turned on my Mac today though and I cannot connect to the internet.
I can connect to my home network, although the connection seemingly keeps going down. However, even when I can stay connected to my home network I cannot connect to the internet. I have had brief periods when I have been able to but websites take absolutely ages to load and the internet connection usually goes down shortly after. None of the other computers on my network are affected, so this problem seems to be isolated to my Mac. Sometimes my Mac can't find any other networks so I have tried turning AirPort off and on again and this usually finds me my home network again but sometimes I cannot connect to it straight away, the connection sometimes times out.
My latest attempt to connect to the internet resulted in me turning AirPort off and on again, connecting to my home network but not finding an IP, then it came up with a self-assigned IP, then it lost connection to the network altogether.
Any help would be greatly appreciated and if any more info is needed I will be happy to give it.

I have exactly the same problem. Have a brand new 27" iMac and can't connect to the internet. A MacBook, MacBook pro, and iPhone have all connected with no problem and continue to do so. Won't access the internet, says password is invalid when I know it isn't, if I manage to get connected (4 times out of about 50 attempts), it throws me out after a few minutes. It doesn't remember the connection settings and I have to go through setup every time I try it.
The signal is strong - I have just tested the connection by trying to connect my mobile phone (Nokia) to the wireless. No problem, instant access, first time. Have spent hours on the phone to Apple and their only conclusion is that it is their wireless card and operation system that is causing the problem and the only solution is to get my internet provider to change the settings on my router.
This is the newest Mac. It retails at £1350! Why can an old phone do what the iMac can't? This is so far from acceptable. I am a new Mac user (the others are my girfriend's and her family's) and if it wasn't for the fact that my girlfriend is such an avid mac fan, I would send this back and buy a pc.
    Very unimpressed.

  • IMac won't connect to Internet after trying to download mac so x

So I was trying to download Mac OS version 10.6.4 (the CD that came with my iMac) and about fifteen minutes in it stopped and restarted. Well I didn't think anything of it because I was late for work as it was. I tried to get on today and my iMac is super slow, it won't connect to the Internet, and IF it does it only stays connected for about 10 minutes. What's wrong? What can I do to fix it on my own, the closes store is two hours away and I really don't want to that?

As we say back home you really screwed the pooch. OK Put your install disk back in and restart the computer while holding down the C key. This will start you up from the disk so you can access Disk utility from the installer program. Click the first aid tab, select your drive and run repair disk.

  • Suddenly iMac won't connect to internet yet laptops will

With no changes that I'm aware of my iMac will no longer connect to the internet. When I open Firefox (or Safari) a window pops up telling me Firefox can't connect to my default URL nor any other site I select. I've tried turning airport off and then back on, resetting the wireless router from Verizon (FIOS) and unselecting and reselecting the signal from the router. Strangely this is not happening on my laptop nor my wifes.
iMac is running Tiger, laptops Panther.

Try with this AirPort Utility 5.3.2 for Tiger update.

  • Imac won't connect to internet

    Hello,
My iMac will not connect to the internet correctly.  I know the internet is working because my wife is using her laptop wirelessly, and my software updates are still working.
Some pages open, but are corrupted and not laid out correctly, (amazon and BBC News).  I have tried to connect wirelessly, and failed.  I have emptied the cache and reset safari. I have tried firefox and the same thing has happened.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hello Tim,
Hi, this has worked for a few...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
    208.67.222.222

    Click OK.
