Imac 5k fan

my iMac 5k with 4ghz i7 has a very loud fan once the i7 is used, e.g. for rendering and gaming. it's so loud (ca. 2500-3000 rpm) that there is no point in using the computer. can this somehow be fixed? it's not a graphics card issue but rather the i7, e.g. when rendering the cinebench.
thanks

Reset the SMC, if necessary do the reset 2-3 times. Also you have 90 days of free AppleCare telephone support,if your problem persists then contact AppleCare.

    Hi MGW,
Baby Boomer recommended that I check with you about our iMac G5 fan noise since you used to have the same model. For a reference as to what all has been suggested and done go to: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9810894&#9810894
I've done some internet searches and come across some other ideas on what may be the problem and if it is not too much trouble I would be very interested in your thoughts about the suggestions by DeathStalker13 --- please scroll down to #19 at this link:

Here is another link that I've found information about iMac G5 fan noise. I'd also like your impression about the methods that these people have done to solve the issue:
    http://scienceman.com/legacypgs/00imacG5fanforum.html
I've also contacted a local AASP store and from just our telephone conversation they think just cleaning the fans and inspecting the computer which would take 1-1/2 hours at $95/hour should take care of the problem.
We'd really appreciate you opinion. Thanks!!!

Thank you so much for answering so quickly. I apologize for not being able to do the same. We had unexpected house guests and everything else was set aside while they were here.
This morning I have been researching trying to figure out how to disable Flash but so far I've been unsuccessful. We have a Power PC Mac OS X 10.4.11, Safari version 3.2.1.
Under the Safari "Help" it says, "Safari works with the plug-ins that are installed with Mac OS X. To see a list of installed plug-ins, open Safari and choose Help > Installed Plug-ins."
I checked and the Installed Plug-Ins list only has one "FLASH" listed - Shockwave Flash. I didn't know how to disable it or if I should.
You suggested changing to Firefox or Camino. We already swap between Safari & Firefox (version 3.0.12) for other reasons. Unfortunately, the fan noise is the same whether we use Firefox or Safari.
It was interesting that under Firefox "Help" they recommended disabling Adobe Flash plugin: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Usingthe+Flash+Plugin+withFirefox?style_mode=inproduct
They said something about, "vulnerable to an extremely malicious exploit" and that until Adobe has an update, you can disable Flash. I followed the instructions but the only plug-ins I found were the following:
    Default Plug-In
    Netscape Navigator Default Plug-In
    Java Embedding Plugin 0.9.6.4
Runs Java applets using the latest installed version of Java. For more information: Java Embedding Plugin. Run version test: Java information.
    Java Plug-in
    Java 1.3.1 Plug-in
    Java Plug-In (CFM)
    Java 1.3.1 Plug-in (CFM)
    QuickTime Plug-in 7.6.2
The QuickTime Plugin allows you to view a wide variety of multimedia content in web pages. For more information, visit the QuickTime web site.
    Shockwave Flash
    Shockwave Flash 9.0 r159
    Shockwave for Director
Macromedia Shockwave for Director Netscape plug-in, version 10.1.1
I haven't changed anything yet, as I'm not sure what I should disable. We have considered putting up with the fan noise since it isn't as bad since we cleaned the fans but if there is an easy fix we'd really appreciate your advice. Thanks!

  • My Imac 's fan goes haywire when screensaver and/ or shutdown  takes place

My 14 month old apple Imac's fan goes crazy when the screensaver and /or shutdown takes place.. otherwise it works beautifully and does not normaly make any noise at all.
    Thank you..

    Hi Gillal,
If your the fans in your iMac fans are running frequently it may be that your computer is overheating for any number of reasons. This article should help you understand how they work -
Learn about the fans in your Mac
If the iMac seems to be using the fans when it should not be, you may want to reset your iMac's System Management Controller. See this article for the steps to do so -

  • IMac G3 Fan outside ????

all imac have Fan in side.... my iMac 450 MHz G3 DV ( sage ) don't have Fan. it is possible to fit fan but not inside outside.( handle area ) sucking air from inside to outside . there is no air flow inside.?????

Keep in mind, i got this computer to just play with and expand, so i dont care if its necessary or not. It was fun taking it apart! I used a 3 speed fan with blue led lights and cut a hole in the case where the CRT compartment is. I was VERY careful around the CRT, baddd things happen otherwise. Anyways, i used a dremel to cut the hole. I set the fan on high, but its just way too loud for my taste, so i may go back and turn it down. It seems to be working fine and ***** alot of air through the case!

  • IMac G5 fan always at maximum speed after booting into si...

IMac G5 fan always at maximum speed after booting into single-user mode in 10.4.3
    Model: 1.6GHz iMac G5 with 10.4.3
I updated my iMac to 10.4.3, then booted into single-user mode to do some cleaning at the command-line level. I know, as others have discovered, that in single-user mode, the thermal control is off, so the fan gradually increases up to maximum speed and stays there until you reboot or go into multi-user mode. Well, I have never experienced this one before, and I'm freaking out about it... I went into single-user mood one reboot after upgrading to 10.4.3, and after all the println white text lines ended, the [1] fan shot up to maximum speed in 0.35 seconds (it sounded like a high-pitched DJ record scratch during the time interval), [2] the fan stayed at maximum speed when I left single-user mode, and [3] I cannot get the fan to slow itself! I rebooted, shut down, and even tried booting off the Tiger CD, but the instant I hit the power button to turn on the iMac, the fans blast up to maximum speed. They shut down when I put the iMac to Sleep, but then they blast up again in full when it wakes up. I checked my settings in the Energy Saver preference pane, and I have the performance set to "Reduced," which is the lowest possible.
I searched to see if anyone else had this problem or if the KBase had any info, but I didn't see any. I'm thinking about erasing and installing my stuff on the iMac, even though I just did that today.
Again, this maximum speed fan problem is freaking me out. It just started when I booted into single-user mode in OS X 10.4.3. I have booted into single-user mode before (10.4.2) and have not experienced this fan issue. I repeat, the fans blast up to maximum speed after pressing the power switch to turn on the computer, so they do not even wait for the Apple logo to show up on the screen before blasting away. How can I get these fans to not do this anymore?!

for the last few months my 20" 1.8GHz Imac has been very noisy - fans seem to run constantly and noisily. It might have been when updating to Tiger but I was never sure. Today, on the advice of a chat tech, I opened the case and reset the SMU to hopefully cure another problem. I noticed that all the air vents, intake and expel ones, were all quite heavily clogged up - not blocked but clogged with dust and fluff. I cleared it away mainly by blowing but also with a hand held hoover held close by. The exposed fan still as a lot of muck on it but greatly reduced and all the vents are completely clear. Having put everything back together again the iMac has been runnning quietly all day. May have been the SMU reset but equally might just be that the computer couldn'tdraw in cool air, circulate it or expel it properly and the fans had to work overtime to cope. Worth checking if you have noisy fans running at speed constantly.

  • Imac high fan speed and goes to sleep 10sec after wake-up

    Hi,
Since today my imac's fan speed is high (optical fan and cpu fan speed at: 4000rpm)
Done a hardware test wich gives me 4SNS/1/40000001:IDSR-0.000 indicating something with logic board. According to istat all my temperatures are below 35°C (95°F). istat has readings for the cpu and optical drive temp (both around 26°C)
On top of that if I put my imac to sleep after wakeup (give or take) 10sec later it would go to sleep again. tried the smc reset procedure. no success
Any other tricks to try or just go for an exchange? (imac was bought on 2feb2010)

I've had this problem since replacing the MLB in my iMac a few weeks ago. Initially brought in for repair when the CPU fan came on at 4k rpm and stayed on even after SMC reset and nvram reset. First replacement MLB was a dud, second corrected the fan problems. Now I'm having the sleep issue, I can't tie it to any particular process. Initially I thought it was graphics related as it would go to sleep during graphics intensive work, but yesterday it was doing it when just copying data to an external drive. The temperatures of the CPU and the GPU diode are within spec. I now use a fan controller to keep the CPU fan at 2100rpm and the HD fan at 2100rpm and I don't have the problem. From what I can tell now is that a sensor is incorrectly reporting temperatures intermittently. It may not be the MLB or the graphics card specifically, but the cable connecting the sensor to the board. I ran AHT after the last time it did this and it failed a sensor, but after running ASD on the machine it passed all the hardware. I'm bringing it back into my shop later this month and if i can remember i'll post here with the resolution, not much I can do at home beyond software diagnostics.

  • IMac g5 fan noise with update to 10.4.11

    Has anyone else experienced this?
I have never had any problems with fan noise with my iMac, though I know it's a problem, till the recent update to 10.4.11. After restarting, it sounded like an airplane. Never heard that before. I shut it down and restarted, and it doesn't sound like a plane anymore, but the fan is noticeably noisier than ever before, a constant whine/hum.
Besides the energy saver fix and resetting the SMU and canned gas in the vents, any other suggestions? This is annoying, it's been running pretty perfect for three years till this. Thanks.

The questions are certainly not dumb - almost anywhere is cheaper than Apple for RAM, I recommend [macsales.com] and [smalldog.com] or [newegg.com]. I don't think that going back to 10.4.10 will help, you should really vacuum the vents to get dust out, and make sure that there's nothing hogging your CPU and making the fans noisy, look at Applications>Utilities>Activity Monitor to see if anything is using an unusual amount of memory or CPU.
If you do want to install Leopard, I would suggest making a full backup of your system,I use SuperDuper! to clone my system to a firewire external drive. You should certainly upgrade your RAM if you install Leo, but I don't think your machine will be any quieter with a new OS.
You need to remember that your machine is several years old, and that things get creaky with age (I certainly have). Since you have the iSight, it's not a simple matter to open it and clean the fans off. If you are really disturbed by the noise, you can take it in to an Apple service place and have them clean and oil the fans, which should help enormously.
Sorry I couldn't offer more help, but fans will, and do, get noisy.

  • Possible solution iMac cooling fan stuck on high and loud

Had iMac go to sleep and just died, no lights or anything, power switch ignored me. Unplugging from wall, holding button in various ways on and after power up did not help in any way. Read articles on knowledge base and googled the web. Finally decided to pull out the round power plug on the rear of the iMac which to a regular user does not even look like it comes loose but it does. I checked the end with a volt meter and saw 120 volts ac and knew the cord was good. Plugged it into the Imac then momentarily touched the power switch and wham the iMac came on with a fury and the fan on super high speed. I'd never heard any of the iMacs in the house ever sound this loud, even on hot summer days. Pulled my hair out for a while but then repeated the steps removing the power cord from the back of the iMac, not the floor, and this time I pressed and held the power switch after plugging the AC back in and held it until I heard a beep, maybe 10+ sec. Of course I knew this worked because I could hear the iMac coming on quietly but making normal noises the moment I touched and held the power button. Now the system is working great again and I,m not looking at bringing it into a service center for no reason and injected more possible problems. I started another topic on the power on issue but I just wanted to document what I found and make it easier for someone else to get a search hit on a solution.
Here's the other thread and hope it helps someone else.

Do a SMC reset and if that doesn't fix it back to the store you go!
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • IMac Display / Fans Stopped Working

So, I've read up on a lot of the other iMac issues with displays going out. However when attaching an external display still nothing shows up. But I've noticed the lower left fan is also not spinning (yes I am authorized to remove parts). So I removed the glass, and display to get inside. The hard drive spins up, but there is no chime on boot. So clearing the PRAM is almost impossible if done by sound. If done by time, not so hard. The SMC also cleared. And all connectors have been unplugged and replugged for seatability check.
If it is the Logic board that needs replaced, what's that going to cost? We do not extend warranties as we have way too many to deal with to do that. This computer was bought new in Aug 2007.
    Thanks,

This question will probably never be answered so I give up. Thanks!

  • IMAC G5 Fans Cycle approximately every 5 to 10 minutes to higher speed

I have a 4 year old iMAC G5 which just started ( about 2 weeks ago) cycling the fan speed to high about every 5 to 10 minutes. I have checked using iStat the temps and the fan speeds, and the temps seem no different than they were before. I have checked to make sure there is no apps hogging CPU. I do notice that the fan cycling seems to happen with Safari 4 open. I have also reset the power control by unplugging all cables and power up the machine while holding in the on off switch and plugging in power cable. The machine has the latest software updates so I am at a bit of a loss as to what might be the problem baring a hardware issue.

    "I have a 4 year old iMAC G5"
If your model is NOT the iSight model, then you will be able to remove the back cover to clean off the accumulated dust from the fans. See Knowledge Base Article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300205 iMac G5 DIY (Do-It-Yourself) Instructions for your model G5 iMac.
If you have the iSight model then it is NOT user repairable. You will need to take it a repair shop for cleaning. Do you by any chance have ProCare?

  • 24" iMac - noisy fan

Early 2009-model iMac 24" - previously fan was silent, replaced screen/HDD under Applecare and suddenly the fan is making a very obvious whirring noise which gets extremely high pitched at high fan speeds. Sent to AASP twice (two different stores), they say they can't hear it and will therefore do nothing- what can I do? This noise is driving me crazy, as I work in a silent room. SMC reset does nothing.

For the first one, they took it into their tech workshop and tried it - second one was in another country! Ambient temperatures are around the same too.
Fans make a noise from boot is the problem (even before the Apple logo appears) - temperature readings are normal, fan speed too (~ 38C/800rpm ODD). When I use SMCFanControl to increase fan speed, the noise increases proportionally - that's how I figured it was the fan (previously, I had no idea what was making the noise). Great idea though.
I only have access to one AASP in my city, and have to travel for 2-3 hours to get to my nearest Apple Store (and I don't drive...). I'm sure if I were there and *made* them hear it (ambient noise tends to eradicate any noise made by my iMac) I'd get my iMac back to its perfect state. Gah.

  • Imac Intel Fan Speed/Air flow - Whats normal?

    Hi,
I have had a intel imac for about a month now, and it is quiet. The air flow coming out of the back slot is warm air, BUT you can hardly feel the flow..
and now i have set up a another imac for someone at work and have a few more to do.
Anyway this other imac when started the fan was loud, not tooo loud but you could really hear it, BUT the airflow was cool air and it felt right that it should be cool air coming out and you could really feel the air. But now that i have moved it to another desk and put ram in it, and started it, the fan has quieted down like my imac and the air flow is warm and much warmer on the top left of the air vent slot.
    - So what is right?, should we be able to hear the fan, or not?
    - Should the air flow be cool or warm?
    - Should you be able to feel the flow on your hand?
    - Is the fan on a sensor, ie if it gets hot it works harder...
Both imacs are now quiet, one is more warm/hot than the other (as it is brand new), i think over time it will cool down....
    - or it is pot luck what happens with them?
    - Also if i get a temperature widget what would be normal
    regarding the reading ?
    thank you

  • IMac cpu fan running at full rpm

    hi all
A few days ago my cpu fan started running flat out. I have done the smc or whatever it is caled reset thing where you unplug the cored ect.
I have done the hardware test with no bad results.
I have checked activity monitor for cpu usage and there is nothing unusual there, so I can only guess that the cpu temp censor is faulty.
I should also add that this machine has been running non stop since mid 2007 , with the exception of the odd blackout and restart, thats pretty amazing i think.
maybe its time has finally come ;(
    any clues ??
    thanks

SMC is firmware and OS X is software, which has nothing to do. Furthermore, you are using a very old iMac, so SMC should not have been updated with OS X 10.10.2.
If you have tried a SMC reset and it did not work, run Apple Hardware Test (make sure you choose an extended test) to see if there is any problem with a temperature sensor or anything like this -> Using Apple Hardware Test - Apple Support
Note that you may need the DVDs that came with your Mac in order to run it. If you get an error at the end of the test, please copy it here.

  • IMac Overheats & Fans Won't Speed up to Cool

I have a 2007 iMac that for some reason the fans won't speed up above idle and so if it's put to heavy use eventually it will overheat and shutdown. It was a while before I had installed software that measured temperatures of devices or fan speeds inside the iMac and then determine what was happening and that indeed the iMac would shut off when the power supply got too hot.
Then I found some of these apps that let you control the fan speed manually or customize the threshold and with some of these I was able to speed the fans up. The one I chose as the best was Derman's version of Fan Control, a control panel which is automatic and effectively keeps all the temperatures normal and has been my solution to the problem. Many people seem to like SmcFanControl for some reason but I don't because it's crude and  totally manual in setting the base fan speed which keeps the fan running higher than normal all the time but doesn't help much to cool if the iMac gets really hot unless you manually speed up the fan more.
The whole thing baffles me. Why can this control panel speed up and control the fans just fine and effectively cool the iMac but left to it's default control it does nothing and allows the iMac to overheat? And has anyone had this problem and found a way to fix it?

As you have already noted, the problem with SMCFanControl is that it only sets a higher minimum speed which leaves the user to have to manually ramp it up (or define a higher preset for various level tasks) when running something that will tax the CPU.  Cooler idle speeds will do little to extend the life of your computer.  My new Quad-Core i7 Mac Mini idles at a cool 110-115 degrees Fahrenheit (yes, that is COOL in computer terms to those that think it's hot because a day in Arizona at that temperature feels very hot).
Manual control is better than nothing if you know you're going to play a game or encode a file, but it stinks if you have a batch of files and you leave the room and it finishes and your fan keeps needlessly running at higher speeds (possibly for days if you left on a trip and left a list of videos to convert while you're gone).  I've left feedback on SMCFan's web site, but perhaps having an upper limit is beyond the author's capability?
Derman's Fan Control has exactly the features needed, but sadly it hasn't been updated since 2007 as far as I can tell (Leopard Era) and thus may not be suitable for a newer Mac running Mountain Lion (the preference pane is also not 64-bit).  iMacs and Macbook Pros all have different fan setups for different equipment and my Mac Mini has its own case fan.  In my case, a Quad i7 will quickly reach 180+ degrees Fahrenheit or hotter when encoding with Handbrake at full speed.  Apple's own fan FINALLY kicks in beyond a smidgen at around 90C/190F, but it doesn't reach near full speed until it gets hotter yet (it seems content to let the CPUs roast at 90C/190F; I think Intel's automatic throttle is at 105C/221F, so perhaps Apple thinks that 90 is perfectly fine.  I'll admit the case isn't super hot or anything, but the concern should be the shelf life of the CPU and other components in the computer, not whether it will run at that temperture for weeks or months or even a year or two.
My PowerMac Digital Audio PPC tower (upgraded to 1.8GHz/1.5GB with dual 1.5TB Sata drives and used as a whole house audio/video server for over 6 years on nearly 24/7 and god knows how much before I bought it used in 2006) still works fine (case fan is starting to get a bit noisier, but still functions and the machine was on 24/7/365 for the most part!  It was built in 2001!  That's 11 years with no component failures and over 4 years 24/7 on the 1.5TB drives).  I'd like my new Mac Mini Quad i7 to last at least half that long.
In short, there aren't many good solutions because no on has bothered (or at least bothered to update) a good fan control for the Mac.  I found a fan control program to run in Windows on my Macbook Pro and it has no configurable options, but automatically ramps at a very good set of default temperatures  and so it's just set to automatically run at startup and forget (I wish I could say the same about OSX; Apple's defaults seem to be set for quiet operation with little thought about longevity).
I'd gladly pay a few bucks to have a good quality fan control program in OSX that is up-to-date, 64-bit and works fine with my new computer in Mountain Lion.  It's a shame I can't seem to find one to buy.

  • IMac High Fans - FIXED

Okay! This is my first post but I need to tell everyone what happened.
After I installed Snow Leopard my iMac fans were constantly running high. The temperature was also extremely hot. So, I called Apple. I live 150 miles away from the nearest Apple store so they sent a tech to my house. He replaced ALL three fans. About an hour after he left the problem reoccurred.
My next step was to take my computer to an authorized retailer which was about 45 minutes away. They kept the computer for two days. They replaced the power supply due to burn spots. I thought for sure they had fixed the heat problem. I was wrong. The problem still existed.
So, I drove 150 miles to the Apple store. They kept my computer for 6 days and then called me. They said they could not find ANYTHING wrong. I drove the 150 miles to pick the iMac up and then all the way back home. Sure enough, the problem still existed.
I was up until 2am and I finally found out what was wrong. There was an app in my preferences called "fan control". I removed this app and the problem was SOLVED. All from a third-party app. I guess Snow Leopard didn't support the fan control.
The process of my removing the "fan control":
    1. In the preferences pane I right-clicked the fan control and removed it
    2. I then went to my .../Library/StartupItems/... and deleted the fan control
    3. Reboot the computer
    4. Empty the trash (couldn't do this before because the files were still being used)
    5. Reset the SMC
    6. Do a PRAM reset (I did this twice...heard chime 3 times)
    VIOLA! Mission Complete!

    {quote:} I was up until 2am and I finally found out what was wrong. There was an app in my preferences called "fan control". I removed this app and the problem was SOLVED. All from a third-party app. I guess Snow Leopard didn't support the fan control.{quote}
Glad to hear that you solved your problem.
I just popped in to share that I've been using smcFanControl (firmware app.) on my Early Core Duo for about 3 years and it gracefully made the upgrades from Tiger, to Leopard, to Snow Leopard without a single problem or issue.
I'm thinking that the upgrade to Snow Leopard may have triggered the smcFanControl app. into turning back on, but why it resurfaced running at full tilt will probably remain a mystery. Perhaps it was just an old incompatible version or corrupt because it was migrated from a different system.
