IMac 5k Fullscreen Terminal/Opacity Slow & Sluggish

i have a weird issue with my new iMac 5k that i have narrowed down specifically to the size of windows with opacity.
The issue at first was not very clear, but at certain points when using my iMac 5k, the whole computer would get sluggish. Memory usage was mimimal (its got 32gb ram) and so was CPU usage (top i7), but things like new browser tabs, switching between finder and another application just by clicking it in the background, mission control etc. were all very slow in responding. The issue would not go away until i restarted my computer.
After a day of trying to investigate what was causing the issue, i managed to narrow it down to Terminal. I have a home-brew theme with 90% opacity set, and i worked out that as soon as i resize the terminal window to fill at least 70% of the screen, the sluggish issue would start. The problem is that even when i quit terminal it would continue. The only fix would be a restart.
I use terminal all the time, so the clear fix for the issue is to change to a theme without opacity (which i have done), but there must be some problem going on in the background if i can't have a basic window filling more than 70% of the screen with any sort of opacity. I realise the 5k has to power a lot more pixels, but wanted to check that its not some other issue.

Applications on Retina display can be toggled to run in Low Resolution. Select the Terminal icon, open the get info panel and tick "Open in Low Resolution".

Upgraded iPod Touch to v2.2.1, but feels slow/sluggish.

Hello.
I just upgraded my client's two years(?) old iPod Touch to v2.2.1 tonight on his MacBook Pro (Mac OS X 10.5.8 with all updates). He hasn't updated its software for about a year or so he said, and this version was free. He also hasn't synchronized his iPod Touch for a year too (crazy, I know). Anyways, the upgrade and synchronizations were successful, but iPod Touch feels slower/sluggish like in e-mails, Safari, etc.
Is this normal? We didn't try reverting back to defaults. Thank you in advance.

Thanks. I forgot to mention that this is an older model that doesn't have 3G. Only wireless for Internet access. And I forgot to follow-up too. It seems OK now. It was weird right after the upgrade and using it, everything felt slower and sluggish. Everything still seems to be still intact and working though.
If it happens again, then I will try your ideas.

IMac freezes or runs really slow

I have now on several occasions run into the fact that mu iMac i frozen or horribly slow. I've, by using the Disk Utility, found out that on all of these occasions the hard disk have had several errors. Wrong number of files, bad hierarchy and so on. Disk Utility has been able to correct these, but after a while I'm into the same problem. What is causing this ? Should I worry about the hard disk physical condition. Luckily I've got TimeMachine running.

If this is Internet related, the slow downs can be caused by increased user activity on your ISP's server.
The more people on your ISP's server doing things on the Internet, the slower your connection will be.
Is there certain times of the day when you notice the Internet is slow?
If so, that's probably the reason.
Also, do you share a connection with anyone else? Either on WiFi or Ethernet?
That will slow your connection, too!
Do you know what your Internet download speeds are?
Not a high enough bandwidth and slow downs will be more evident.
If on a WiFi, is the router you are you using 802.11 B, G, or N speeds?
Might be time from a newer, faster router?

The best antivirus application is none at all, keep OS X up-to-date and educate yourself about Malware by reading Viruses, Trojans and Malware - Prevention and removal: Apple Support Communities.
In order to speed up your iMac we need to know some basics about it first such as what version of OS X is installed, exactly which iMac you own, how much RAM it has, what size is the HD and how much free space on the HD. Without those fundamentals we would only be guessing.

See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...

Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free Disk space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?

3G Slow, Sluggish Performance

I have read numerous complaints about 3G's slow, sluggish OS. I am a new 3G owner and i too notice degraded performance over time. This seems to clear up when I reboot my phone. Is this known to Apple and is there a fix for it? XPS

From the other comments i've read regarding this problem, it seemed to come along with the release 2.x and 3G. Folks seem to agree that it was something in the new release that's responsible for the problem.

First, make sure you have adequate backups. If your hard disk is failing this could be a sign. It can be replaced if necessary, but a backup strategy is recommended whether or not you are experiencing problems.
Read: OS X Mountain Lion: If your Mac runs slowly. It applies to Lion as well. The article is very cursory, but be sure to read through to the end. Unfortunately the link there is broken, so use this one: Disk Utility. To do this you must start your Mac from the Recovery System or Internet Recovery.
Rather than ask a dozen questions for more details about your system consider the following. You must be running either Lion or Mountain Lion. Including your version of OS X in your system description would help.
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:

Try these basic troubleshooting steps.
1. Quit all app scompletely and restart the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Restart the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
2. Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
3. Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Data. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

You can use VNC. There is a VNC Lite for free so you can test whether it will meet your needs.

There are lots of reasons why a computer might slow down but the most common are 1) too little RAM, 2) the hard drive is too full, and 3) a 'rogue' program is using lots of CPU cycles. The first step to dealing with this problem is not to try 'cleaning' the computer.
How much hard drive space is free on your computer? Programs need to create temporary files so the computer should have some empty space for them. You should keep something like 10%-15% free. There's a tool in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder called Activity Monitor. Drag it to your Dock so it hand, then reboot your computer and start Activity Monitor.
The activity Monitor will let you look at what your computer is doing and you'll want to keep your eye on two things: Click on the CPU tab and you can see all the programs your computer is running. In the list you can click on the CPU column to get the list sorted by CPU usage. This is useful because it lets you see if a program is using lots of CPU cycles. If you have an application that is consistently running at 50% or higher, that is probably not good. The second thing you want to watch is RAM. Click on the System Memory tab and you can see all the programs and how much RAM each one is using. But the really important information is next to the pie chart. You'll see VM, Page ins, Page outs, etc. The Page ins number is important - a high number is not good.
I suggested that you reboot your computer before you started the Activity Monitor. This will have reset Page Ins to 0. Now over the course of an hour, keep referring to the Page ins. If that number remains 0, you have plenty of RAM. The higher it gets, the more you need a Memory upgrade. When you restarted the computer also deleted all the temporary files, so take a look at the free space too. At this point you should see at least 10% free. If not, your drive might be too full.

Could be over-heating. Try cleaning out the air vents.

My iMac has been sluggish for a long time; finally got around to posting here for help!
I've tried using Onyx to clean it up and it helped a little, but it seems as if everything freezes up and forget about mail; I use apple mail with gmail (google docs) and it is constantly indexing, etc. I need to use the web browser to answer email and it's just not what I want from apple.
