iMac 8.1 seems to be a 2008 model. I want to know if it has a digital in, so that software like Audacity can directly record analog tapes in digital format. Would appreciate if anyone could throw light on it, a sthe tech specs are a bit unclear on this front.

Even PPC Macs can do what you're trying to do. Just plug the cable from the headphone jack on the tape player directly in to the input jack on the Mac.
Use the tape deck's volume to regulate the recording level, leaving the Mac's volume at max and Audacities input at max.
Enable both software and hardware playthrough in Audacity.
Use the 'start listening' selection in the input drop down (click the microphone symbol) to hear what's being recorded.

You should be able to get an adapter that will change the Thunderbolt out to a DVI or HDMI out, and connect that to an external monitor. I am not sure what connection your iMac screen has, or if it even HAS input capability. I know that the 27' iMac BEFORE it was given the Thunderbolt ports had MiniDP input. If your iMac is any older than that one, I am not sure. But the adapter should allow you to output to any DVI or HDMI display, depending on which adapter you get.

By default, your AirPort Express is using an internal DAC to convert the digital audio stream to analog when you connect an analog audio cable to it audio output port. You can; however, connect an external DAC to the same port using a optical digital cable and let the external DAC do the conversion for your stereo.

iTunes only allows you to transfer songs from an iPod if they were purchased in the iTunes Store.
As they were transferred from a CD, you have to use an application like Senuti > http://www.fadingred.com/senuti/ It will transfer the music from an iPod to iTunes

There have been reports that this can be due to router problems.
A simple way round it is to get a friend to download the installer for your and put it on a USB stick.

IMac late 2013 does not have "Computer sleep" setting in Energy Saver prefs

I seem to be missing the "Computer sleep" setting in my Energy Saver pref window. All I see is "Turn display off after" setting. The computer does go to sleep.Is this a change that was made for recent iMacs?

It appears that the chip manages the power states itself. Again getting exact information on this is a pain and I'm really surprised (well maybe not so surprised) that Apple hasn't said anything about this. You'd think if they make such a drastic change to the system and to the Energy Savings pane of System Preferences there would be something.

Haswell chips will have 3 power states, compared to two in its predecessor, Ivy Bridge. These will be Active, Sleep, and Active Idle. Intel claims the advanced power saving will help give it at least 20x power consumption improvement over third generation chips.
It appears that the CPU will put itself to sleep if it is inactive for so many cycles. In a way this makes sense, the old method of telling the system to sleep after so many minutes is really very imprecise.
The only reason not to put the system to sleep as soon as it is idle is that it takes some amount of time to wake-up. So the lag would be annoying if it happened each time the system was idle. With the Haswell chip (as near as I can make out) wake-up is almost instantaneous. So there is no lag going from sleep to running. With no lag then it becomes feasible to put the CPU to sleep sooner and more often.
Again there is nothing I can point you to that states this it's what I've pieced together from various sources. In any case the missing setting in System Preferences is not an error so I guess you'll get to experience fist hand how this all works. Post back with your observations, it will be interesting to hear what you think.

How do I burn a DVD on my new iMac? It does not have iDVD

I have a new iMac that I can't get to burn a DVD that can be read in our DVD player. I have the videos in iMovie but the iMac doesn't have iDVD.

The current Apple thinking is that the entire world has access to fast broadband and wants to destribute home movies to friends and relatives via download (iCloud) rather than mailing them a DVD. The fact that nothing could be further from the truth has so far had no effect on this policy. If you scream and shout loudly enough down the phone Apple may send you a free copy of iDVD. That has worked for some, but is not guaranteed to work for all.
Whilst Macs with a Superdrive continue to be able to burn video DVDs, the software for so doing, iDVD, is no longer included in the iLife bundle that comes with Lion. You have to buy iLife 11 from online Apple Store in order to get iDVD. You are strongly recommended to do so soon as it will not be available for much longer.

Is iCloud as good to back up files when an iMac 2007 model does not have an external hard drive is this enough to find files and apps at another time

You need to find out what video out you have on your iMac, and what kind of video inputs there are on your TV.
It will help to know exactly what model iMac and exactly what make/model TV you have.
Depending on the exact model iMac you have, it may have miniVGA, miniDVI, miniDisplayPort or Thunderbolt output. Your TV may have composite, S-video, component, DVI, VGA or HDMI inputs. Once you confirm what kind of ports your iMac and TV have, then we can probably suggest the correct cable or adapter so you can connect them to each other.
