IMac 8,1 Random Freezing

Hey guys,
My computer has started randomly freezing in the past few months. As I'd migrated from a MacBook with a lot of crap on it, I tried a reformat, but to no avail. I also thought it might be my RAM as I ran Memtest and it came up with errors, so I replaced my 2 Gb of RAM with 4 Gb of RAM. It was fine for a while, but now the freezing has started again.
Here's a log of a period in which it crashed. I can't pin point exactly where, but I think it might be from 4:59 to 5:00.
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers,
     Thomas.

Hi Tom,
Unexpected EOF implies you need a Disk Repair or Reinstall.
IOSurface: buffer allocation size is zero implies a Graphics problem, haven't nailed all the causes ye, but often associated with Multiple screens.
Sorry, I don't have time to really study the log further at the moment, ut hopefully one of the other freat helpers here will pipe in.

  • IMac (i3 2010) random freezing and now with 3 beeps

Hi I have a 21" iMac i3 base model with 8Gb of Ram (see below).
Ever since I got the mac about 10 months ago it has been randomly freezing up, becoming completely unresponsive to any input (keyboard mice etc), and can only be fixed by a hard reboot (holding down power button).
It can happen while I am away at lunch and I come back to find it frozen on the screen saver. Other times I'm just browsing the web (nb has happens with safari, firefox, and chrome). While others times I have been using the system to its fullest. There never seems to be a reproducible way of triggering it. I can go for a week without issue, and then it can happen 6+ times a day, and they go back to being fine again for awhile. Although it has been getting progressively worse over time and more constant.
I have tried repairing permissions (disk utility and onyx). Defraged the drive (drive genius), run TechTools pro and it passed all the tests. I don't have access to the orginal disks (work iMac) so running the AHT is not possible, as is a clean instal.
I updated to 10.6.8 this week, and now when it freezes, it is now accopained by 3 loud beeps...pause...3 beeps etc etc.
This suggests that it could be a memory problem, but I have never had a problem during the boot up process, and as I said it has passed the memory test on both TechTools6 and Rember, I'm not sure if this is the case.
Because the system completely frezzes, there is no log or error reports created, meaning that pin-pointing the issue or even having proof for the tech-guys/Apple is difficult.
Has anyone got any suggestions on a fix, or how I might be able to get an error report, or how I could induce the problem on que.
    Thanks heaps
    a

Ok so it definitely appears to be the RAM. I have found a way to reproduce the crashing....Running Prime95. Its normally takes about 15-30min on the stresstest to get the system to lock up.
But here is the strange thing. It only seems to work if I have the full 8Gb installed.
I have run each 2Gb stick by itself without issues.
And then run 6Gb, changing the empty slot each time, and again no crashing.
I found the following thread also has similar issues, with the RAM the most likely cause.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15610565#15610565
I can discount USB,wifi, bluetooth as I tried this and still managed to get a crash.
But I did have screen sharing on so I am now testing if I can run the 8Gb with this disabled.
Will report back with my findings.

  • My iMac (Snow Leopard) randomly freezes.

Only a laserprinter is connected. Sometimes  I can work for a few weeks without problem, but then the computer  freezes. The computer sounds 3 monotone chimes in a row and repeats this, keyboard an mouse become inactive till I do a hard shutdown.
Took the computer 2 times to the Apple store, they tested for a week but apparently nothing happened then.
    Anybody any suggestion?

    Hi...
The computer sounds 3 monotone chimes in a row
Does it sound more like beeps than chimes? Could be the RAM (memory) needs replacing.

  • My New iMac 21.5" randomly freezes and reboots itself.

Can some decipher what the problem is? Is it hardware related?

  • Lion OS random freezing. Any updates on a fix for this?

I've downloaded the latest Lion OS updates but my iMac continues to randomly freeze up and requires a restart. Any updates on a fix for this?

Create a new admin user account, log into it, and see if the freezes persist.

  • Random freeze crasch an repeated warning sound on iMac OSX 10.6.8

I have a one year old iMac intel Core i5 running on Mac OSX 10.6.8
It randomly freeze, crasch an gives a repeated warning sound. Very scary!
Spoke to support and I have checked that the RAM are properly installed. Still crasch.
I've also restored the SMC. Still crasch.
Finally I spent the whole weekend reinstalling the system from scratch. Last step after restoring all content and programs I copied my Firefox data.
    Once again the systen freezed/crasched.
I'm broken. Does anyone know what the problem is?

    Hi,
Since you have reinstalled OSX have you tried a hardware test?

  • IMac randomly freezes. Spinning pinwheel

My late 2009 iMac running OS X 10.6.3 and now 10.6.4 has had a problem randomly freezing. The problem is easily remedied by manually shutting down with the power button and then powering the machine back on. However, I am tired of having to do this and am wondering if there is anything that can be done to stop this from happening. There is no rhyme or reason to these occurrences. Sometimes it will happen when waking up from sleep mode. Sometimes it occurs when you are actively using the computer. I never overload the ram with to many programs or processes at one time. Also, I have tried various resets with no luck. Please help!

You people are overly cautious. As long as the drive isn't being written to at the time, you're not likely to do any harm to the system shutting it down by holding in the power button. Things were a bit different in the days before journaled filesystems, but like so many bits of sage IT wisdom floating about, it's based on severely outdated information. Look at the number of people still giving advice for ni-cad batteries to people with Li-Ion batteries for example. Telling them all about memory effects, and how you should let the battery completely discharge before charging it again. Hasn't been valid advice for probably 10+ years, which is probably just about how long it takes for it to filter down to the general populace. You've got to just love it when someone tries to pass off someone else's bit of advice/wisdom as their own in an attempt to seem like some kind of IT sage, and then because they don't really understand any of the background info, invariably screw it up or keep repeating the same bit of advice for years, long after it stopped being relevant.
Anyway, journaled filesystems, like HFS+, should be able to recover from just about anything short of a HDD failure. Granted the goal is to let everything shut down in an orderly fashion, but I got to tell you. Mac OS X tends to shut down way too fast, so behind the scenes it's probably just kill -9ing everything. Which is to say it's about the same as if you just shut the system off via the power switch.

  • Mid-2010 iMac randomly freezing after last Windows 7 update.  Help!  I am a teacher and have 50 computers all behaving the same way.

I am a teacher and have 50 mid-2010 iMacs running Windows 7 in my classroom.  The computers did a Windows 7 automatic update on or around April 15, 2014.  After that, each computer randomly freezes.  Some are worse than others.  Most of the computers freeze when a USB drive is plugged in and also when a pop-up shows up on the screen - especially the Java update.  I have installed the most current Bootcamp drivers and run several anti-virus program searches.  I've also tried the Microsoft Fix-it program and almost everything.  Uninstalling the updates did not help.  Can anyone help me out?

based on what you wrote this  doesn't make sense
use system restore to rollback the machine prior to this update

  • Random freeze of iMac with Tiger 10.4.5

Hello, since a few weeks my iMac freezes almost regular but I can not say if it is due to an application or anything else as it happens complete random. Sometimes it happens after a few minutes, sometimes after hours but in 8 of 10 "on times" the Mac freezes. I can only turn him off...
Does anybody know if there is a way to track last actions and investigate what the reason for these freezes are?
    Thanks in advance. KM
    iMac 800Mhz PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Open the Console app in the Utilities folder. Click on the Logs icon in the toolbar to open the sidebar logs list. You can examine the console and system logs as well as any crash logs to see if you can find anything helpful.
If your random freezes occur only when using a particular application, then there may be a bad preference file associated with that app. If the freezes are occuring almost always when you use Safari, then there are some things you can try. If the freezes are accompanied by a kernel panic alert, then there are other things to consider.
In the meanwhile it cannot hurt to do the following:
Boot from your OS X Installer. Be sure to use the installer for the version of OS X you have installed. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (or Utilities menu if using Tiger.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.1.1 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Imac randomly freezes   fan runs loud

    Hello,
My imac g5 randomly freezes. When it does freeze the fan kicks in and is very loud. This is a stock g5 Imac with no new software loaded. The only applications run on this machine so far are safari, and Mail. Does anyone have a clue as to what could be wrong? I've had the machine for 2 months and it has run fine untill the last week of random freezes. Also does anyone know apples policy regarding replacement or repair? I do have applecare. any advice would be appreciated, thanks,
    Dan

    Hi,
I have exactly the same problem. I've had it for a couple of months now. My iMac G5 (iSight) is only a couple of months old - I got one of the last ones just after the intel came out. The freeze occured loads with 10.4.6. I've just had it again with 10.4.7 - my first time since I updated with the full combined installer a few days back.
I regularly repair permissions. I have run fsck from single user mode. I have run apple hardware test - no faults. I have checked/repaired the disk from the install disk - no faults. I have removed all external devices - I previously suspected it might be a USB hub causing the problem but no. I have not removed additional ram as yet - that is my next step though it pains me to be doing such things when I bought the computer from Apple and you would think they would have installed Apple approved/top quality ram.
It is very weird behaviour. Never experienced it in all my mac owning days - and I've got/had a few. I had hoped it was a combination of 10.4.6 and the iMac G5 (iSight)... but the latest update has not fixed the problem. And I find it hard to believe it may be the RAM. Because surely RAM just doesn't fail that often?!? And like this?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
    iMac G5 2.1   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1.5 GB Ram
    iMac G5 2.1   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1.5 GB Ram

  • Seemingly random freezes and general sluggishness.

Since I have updated to Snow Leopard my 20" iMac seems to be having some issues. various applications stall (iTunes, FireFox, iPhoto) or completely freeze seemingly at random. Not enough to prohibit use of the machine but often enough to cause concern. I have run DiskUtility to repair permissions, I have cleared out my cache files using Onyx but these stalls and crashes still seem to persist.
I have posted the log from a single start up below. A few start up errors caught my attention but I admit I really do not completely understand what I am reading.
_*Could not find: com.apple.ReportCrash.Self:*_ seems this would be console log related
MenuCracker: There seem to be 3 errors in the log related to MenuCracker I have read that this is installed with some software but I am not sure what. I did have "Connect360.prefPane" and "MediaLink.prefPane" set to show their icons in the menu, but this error still persists after I set them to not do so.
Any assistance would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

    -------------------

I finally tracked down where MenuCracker was hiding as an invisible file:
    /Users/calvin/.webex/825/Sharing.app/Contents/Resources/WebexAppshare.menu/Conte nts/Resources/MenuCracker.menu/Contents/MacOS/MenuCracker
The key for me was ".webex/825/Sharing.app" WebEx is a service by Cicso the company I work for uses for web based meetings. (www.webex.com)
I had no luck finding an uninstaller from them so I did a search for invisible files. Amazing how many of those there are!
Sure enough there was the .webex folder with a bunch of stuff they installed, probably about 2 years a go when I first use the service. This included this "Sharing.app" file that must have been loading on start-up and utilizing the MenuCracker hack.
First I moved this to the trash. But because it was invisible this did not show up there and did not set the trash menu to allow emptying. Besides, I thought to myself, I should not just immediately delete it just-in-case. So I made a new visible folder on my desktop and moved it there.
I then restarted and pulled up console to review the start-up log. Sure enough MenuCracker has now been removed:

Time will tell if this solves my random freezes. I will give it some time to see and report back my findings to see if indeed this hack was causing my issues.
Thanks to all for the input as well as the side banter about Snow Leopard. That has gotten very entertaining. I understand people are frustrated with an upgrade that causes them problems but to get that perfect world Apple would only allow us to use Apple sanctioned software so that they could test permeation of software/hardware to be sure these things didn't happen. Do you really want that? This is exactly what people are complaining about with the iPhone and iPad. you can't have it both ways now can you.

  • Lion Randomly Freezes

Since "upgrading" to Lion my iMac and my son's MacBook Pro randomly freeze.  Neither of the computers had problems.  The freezing causes a force shut-down, I have let the iMac sit for hours.  Sometimes it will just freeze and others it will just not wake up after sleeping.  I have tried zapping P Ram several times, I have reset the SMC several time, neither of which has helped.  The freezing conttinues.  Nxt step is a clean install of Lion adding each program one at a time and waiting to see if the problem returns or not.  A serious pain.
Any other ideas of something else to try.

This morning alone, I have had 4 freezes & restarts while doing routine work. In all the years I have used Apple products (25+) I have NEVER had as much trouble with an upgrade as I am haivng with Lion.
First it was ProTools not being compatible. Then it was and still is MIDI problems with the Audio/MIDI set up, and finally the FREEZES.
    What is going on?
I have not added comments to the reports which show up after a restart.
Have gotten nastier as the freezes continue and I have NEVER GOTTEN A REPLY FROM Apple, even what I was polite and civil.
My level of frustrations is growing and my ability to work is diminishing.
    WHAT TO DO.......???????????
    Can ANYONE advise???
    PLEASE............

  • I get random freezes and have to force shut down

My iMac woked fine before OS X Lion, But now it randomly freezes up and I have to hold down the power button.  I have tried just letting the Mac stay freezed, but I still have to force shut down.  Please help he resove my problem.

Try some of the fixes in Understanding upgrade nightmares*.  I'd be particularly inclined to blame third-party software, but obviously can't be sure that's the correct diagnosis so quickly!

  • Emac G4 1Ghz w/ random freezes

My Emac exhibits random freezes. The screen and mouse lock up. This is a nice machine that keeps cool, is quiet & fast with sharp graphics. I have it in a clean, dry, room temperature environment.
It can happen at any time though, without warning. Occasionally (less than half the time) when it does freeze, I get a repetitive "click, click, click" sound (although quiet it can be heard through the speakers), similar to that of a failed hard drive. But it is not the hard drive, because I replaced it with another known working one, as well as booting from yet another firewire drive. I have replaced the PC 133 ram with known working ram from another mac without change. A fresh OS 10.4 install was also made.
It can happen two minutes after desktop (rare), or two days later, and up to a half dozen times a day if I keep rebooting. No rhyme, reason or pattern. Most of the time, I'm on the internet with no other applications running. I switch between Safari and Firefox 2.0. I like to keep my Emac on 24/7. It always reboots afterwards without any problems. Apple Hardware Test has yielded no answers either.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Hi,
I found this post of wikipedia:
In early 2006, some users started to experience system freezes in their second revision eMacs - by now around 18 months old. The fault was found to lay with a bad batch of capacitors which had also caused faults with the iMac G5, manufactured in a similar time frame. In June 2006 Apple introduced the eMac Repair Program. However, despite relating directly to the capacitor problem, the symptoms listed under the Repair Program do not include "freezing". Apple agreed to extend the warranty for this failure only on any affected eMacs up to 3 years old. However, some users have reported that Apple is accepting eMacs for repair even older than the 3 years stated.
    See this page:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMac and search for "capacitor".
So perhaps you have that logic board issue.
The apple repair page for the emac mentions the 1ghz g4 as one of the models, so you might want to check out if you still have coverage and contact apple:

  • Mid 2009 13.3" Macbook Pro random freezing issue

    Hi all,
I had a 2009 13.3" Unibody Macbook and last week purchased a 13.3" Macbook Pro. I had installed 4GB of RAM in the MB myself, and it had worked fine for the month I owned it.
I backed up my MB with an external USB hard drive using Time machine, restored from this backup on my MBP and moved the 4GB RAM over.
When using the MBP I get random freezes lasting between 1 and 3 seconds, occuring every 5 to 30 minutes.
Could someone please advise a good way to diagnose this problem further? I am guessing it is not the RAM as it worked fine whilst in the MB.

    I have an update!
I made an appointment with a local Apple Genius Bar and talked to a technian. He said it was neither the RAM nor the Hard Drive at fault.
His only thoughts were that a software issue was the root cause. I have been doing some serious investigating this morning and figured it out. Viewing system.log in Console shows:
SMS::infiniteIntTimerEventHandler ERROR: we have infinite interrupts, disabling
At exactly 5 minute intervals. These correlate with the freezes (to the second).
SMS refers to the Apple Sudden Motion Sensor. I disabled this by doing "sudo pmset -a sms 0" in Terminal, rebooted and everything is fine.
I have no idea why the SMS thinks the Macbook is falling every 5 minutes, but when it occures the hard drive heads are locked down to prevent damage, which is a perfect reason as to why iTunes would crash but Spotify (streaming internet music) does not.
    Problem solved!
    Edit:
In reply to some questions posted by other members (thank you by the way).
I did install EFI 1.7 update. I did not use the Migration assistance. At some point I will do a fresh install then pick and choose parts from a backup rather than using a full Time Machine Restore. This could still have been the root cause of the issue, but it is hard to tell.
    Thanks guys!
