Imac 8,1 Suddenly very slow

Hello all,
Last wednesday (ordinary day like all others) i was surfing the web. My wireless keyboard gave me a low battery warning. I got up get 2 fresh batteries and replace them. from that moment on the iMac got really slow.
I restarted the computer. Turns out it took 15 minutes to completely restart. It took 5 minutes to show the Apple logo at startup, 5 minutes for the blue screen and 5 minutes to load my desktop completely. I restarted the computer again. This time instead of the Apple logo it shows a folder icon with a question mark. I restarted again and it took its 15 min tu startup. I tried to do some last minute backup but with the slowness of the computer it would have taken more than 3 days according to finders calculations.(For a 400Mb transfer).
I did a SMC reset. Idid an RVRAM reset. Idid a disk utility scan. Even used Applejacks. Nothing helped.
Did a clean install of the Mac OSX. No help whatsoever. It starts up a little faster.( maybe 10min total). At after startup finder opens up quickly at first. After a while opening any program will make the icon bounce on the dock for 5 minutes before starting up.
I love this computer. (even-though I also have a 21.5' Imac). I would really like to know if someone out there knows what this problem is.
Thank you in advance.
Jurgen Celestijn

Redo the SMC and PRAM resets using the following instructions. You can also try Repairing Disk Permissions (Applications - Utilities - Disk Utility) and finally run Apple Hardware Test in Extended mode to see if there are any hardware issues.
*SMC RESET*
• Shut down the computer.
• Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
• Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
• Release the power button.
• Attach the computers power cable.
• Press the power button to turn on the computer.
*PRAM RESET*
• Shut down the computer.
• Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
• Turn on the computer.
• Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
• Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.

  • WebDav suddenly very slow

Today, WebDav became suddenly very slow on my iMac running the latest version of Mavericks. Yesterday everything was OK.
When I try WebDav from my iPad things are OK, so I suspect something is wrong on my iMac. I already tried rebooting and resetting PRAM and VRAM.
Does anyone have a good suggestion?

    Hello,
Check to see how much free disk space there is. Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop, then click: Get Info. In the Get Info window, click the discovery triangle so it's facing down. You will see; Capacity and Available Make sure you have 10% available disk space, 15% is better. Insufficient available space, can cause performance issues, system corruption, and possible loss of data.
Check the hard disk for errors.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.

  • Mac Book Pro suddenly very slow

MacBook Pro suddenly very slow despite good wifi connection. Should I be scanning for virus? and if so, which product?

Scanning for a virus will be a waste of time.  To date there are no know virus' affecting Macs.

  • My iMac is all of a sudden very slow - help?

My iMac is all of a suddden very slow and the incoming gmail is no longer working.  However my incoming mail works fine on my iPad and other devices? The slowness is on every thing?

First question to ask is: how much free space is still available on your hard drive?

  • Using Express and Extreme - Suddenly very slow.

I've got a Mac Pro (2009) with 10.6.8. It's hooked up to an Airport Express.
In another room I've got an iMac hooked up to an Airport Base Station. That's where my modem for the internet is.
I've had no trouble for a year but suddenly the Mac Pro is running VERY slow. I got the latest firmware but didn't change anything.
The Airport utility says "This version of AirPort Utility doesn't support this AirPort wireless device and might improperly configure the device."
I went to download the update but it's for system 10.7 and up.
I don't want to update now because I'd have to update too many programs and plugins.
Any ideas why it's suddenly slow?

Your Netgear router, most likely, doesn't support DD-WRT, and therefore will not work in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS). You might want to consider substituting your AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) for the Netgear to be used as the main base station and your AirPort Express Base Station (AX) as the remote base station in a WDS configuration.

  • My Apple TV is suddenly very slow

I am going to have to use laymen terms here. I purchased my Apple TV a year ago and have been using it successful since. About two weeks ago it suddenly began streaming very slowly and has maintained a very slow rate of transfer between my computer (Windows XP) and the Apple TV. To be frank I cannot use it without frustration. I tried upgrading to 2.0 but it did not help. So I did a factory reset which only put it back on 1.1 ; but the performance is still painful. I have made no changes to my router (ADSL) or my computer that is running iTunes. I have three other laptops that are running on the wireless laptop and they are running fast and fine.
    Can anyone help?

    davidwh1,
I may have misread your original post... but I interpreted your message to say that you have your information on a laptop, and that the laptop and AppleTV are both connected wirelessly to your router. And if that is the case you can connect your laptop directly to your AppleTV for testing purposes. However, if your iTunes is on your desktop PC, perhaps you could try to sync one of your laptops (if you have iTunes on it) to your AppleTV in order to rule out that it is a connection issue. Sorry if I misread your post and I wish you good luck.

  • JDeveloper IDE suddenly very slow for past two days

    Hi All,
I have Jdeveloper 11.1.1.4 for more than a month now. Suddenly the JDeveloper IDE has become very slow. It is very annoying having to wait for the code changes to show across and windows take long to get in sync. I have 3.25 GB RAM running on XP service pack 3. Also, I scanned my machine for likely virus, but has come clean. It is only with Jdeveloper I am having problems. All other applications are running fine. I even tried just running JDeveloper alone. No luck.
    Thanks

Suddenly the JDeveloper IDE has become very slowSeems like something changed.
Did you install any new extensions? When is it "slow?" Is it when doing a specific activity, or just overall "slow?" What does your OS show (is JDev using lots of CPU, for example)? Have you tried making a backup of your "system11.1.1.4.37.59.23" folder (numbers may be different depending on version) and then deleting it so that JDev recreates it for you (you'll lose all of your preferences/settings)?

  • Internet suddenly very slow 2011 Mac Mini

My internet has suddenly become very very slow.
    Wireless.
    Last week very fast.
    Any ideas?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

  • HDD suddenly very slow

    Hello,
One week ago, my white Intel iMac has begun to be really slow, always getting the spinning wheel.
I ran Onyx maintenance scripts, defragmented, and finally formated and reinstalled my whole system.
However, it did not solved the problem, but it helped me understand its origin: the internal HDD has become very slow.
When I tries to copy/paste a 2 Go folder, it takes over 45 minutes! The speed doesn't go beyond 2mbit/s. Now the disk is empty (I am running from a external HDD), and it is still so slow...
No problem with the external HDD.
What can I do ? It is a really big problem for me. And obviously, my warranty extension has just finished...

Boot from the install disk and run Disk Utility Repair Disk. See "Try Disk Utility" here.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417
How much free space do you have on the drive? Check when you run DU. Were you getting the message "Startup Disk is Full?" You should maintain at least 10-15% of capacity. Is your external bigger than the internal? If it is, might explain why it isn't having problems.
Also, booted normally run DU, highlight the drive and see if down at the bottom, it says SMART Status Verified. Even if it shows Verified, Your drive may be failing.
See what kind of report you get on the drive from this demo of Smart Utility which is more accurate and less forgiving than the verification the Mac provides.

  • Macbook suddenly very slow

    Hi All,
A couple of days ago, my aluminum macbook suddenly slowed to a crawl. Lots of beach balls, or just freezes with no indication as to why. In addition, certain applications (iTunes, Disk Utility,...) would crash, with crash reporter giving a KERNINVALIDADDRESS error code. I also ran into an error message in Terminal that the dylib shared cache was corrupted, and I wasn't able to rebuild it. I reinstalled OS X, which fixed the dylib and crashing issues, but the computer is still very slow. I've run memtester to investigate whether the RAM is faulty, but didn't find any problems. Disk Utility didn't find any problems with my HD either. Any other suggestions?
    Thanks!

    HI,
Make sure there's enough free space on the startup disk. Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 15% free disk space.
And help here for the The Spinning Beach Ball of Death

  • Mac suddenly very slow

All of a sudden my mac started running very slow.
first i opened activity-monitor to see what was wrong. I didnt see any unusual ram-usage. But the kernel_task had a CPU-time of 32 000. I cant seem to find any other explenation for why this is happening.
when i try to use my computer pretty much every task takes ages. Everything from doing stuff on the internet to browsing around in finder. Im also having trouble starting up my computer, i have to hold in the power button very long for it to respond. It also turns itself of without any reason.
Whats weird though is that my computer still manages to run movies in VLC smoothly.
    Help would realy be appriciated

  • Suddenly VERY Slow Internet On Macbook Pro

My MacBook Pro is less than a year old, running Snow Leopard 10.6.7. A few days ago, the internet suddenly became very, VERY slow. My computer says it is receiving a full signal, and my girlfriend's computer (a Dell, I might add) is on the same wireless network and is working great. I have tried everything suggested to me when searching for the problem online: I've reset my router and modem (but again, my girlfriend's computer is working well on the very same connection and my MacBook claims to be getting a full signal), checked for software updates, emptied Safari's cache, reset Safari, disabled plug-ins, tried Chrome and Firefox (the problem persisted), scanned for a DNS changer and viruses/spyware (the scan came up clean), added open DNS servers, reset my TRAM, repeaired disk permissions and have restarted throughout this process. I cannot trace this changed internet speed to anything - I have no idea what has caused it or how to fix it. Please help!

    Hi...
Try Starting up in Safe Mode
That deletes system caches that may help. A Safe Mode boot takes longer then a normal boot so be patient.
Once you see the Desktop click the Apple menu icon top left corner of your screen. From the drop down menu click Restart.
If that didn't help, try uninstalling Sophos >  http://help.bol.ucla.edu/app/answers/detail/a_id/879
Then try your browsers. It could be the security software that's slowing your browsers down.
If that helps, you could try a different anti virus software such as ClamXav. It's free and Lion v10.7 compatible.

  • Suddenly very slow export

Hi.  Basically, my export has gone very slow.  I will give what details I can, but the main thing here is that I am doing what I have always done, but suddenly it is going very slow.  I export to MPEG2 DVD as that goes straight onto a DVD without further render in my Sony DVD maker program.  Export in Premiere usually takes between 30 and 40 minutes. Latyest project is warning me of over 3 hours!  I thought I would ask here before waiting and seeing if it still works okay in case there is an obvious answer.  MPEG audio, multiplexer on, maximum mrender depth, CBR slider set to make a file that will be as large to preserve quality and still fit on a DVD (I go for around 4GB or just over)  Stick to CBR as the estimated file size is more accurate than messing about with VBR sliders.  Projects are standard definition, two video sources mixed (full DV) and separate sound source added and synchronised.  I film stage plays with two cameras.  Projects typically between one and a half and two and a half hours long.  This project is actually at the lower end.  No other obvious problems with the PC in general.  Is it worth a system restore?  It was fine for a project similar size rendered last week.  I am asking befoire i try system restore as they are getting hard to do.  They never seem to work unless I remove all my virus protection stuff!  CAn I think of anything different about this project?  Well, only that the venue I was filming in was not quite level, resulting in a bit of an angle that I corrected by tilting the film just a few degrees.  (Only affecting the part of the picture that would be off the TV screen) just to make the stage look level.  I often do this with a few shots from one of the cameras, but maybe not the whole film for both cameras like in this case.  I even tried pressing enter and doing that render thingy before export.  That did not help.  Maybe that is just to get something better in the preview window.  Normally it just takes around half an hour or just over.  Media player can be a bit crackly and choppy playing the rendered movie, but then it is always fine on the DVD so I just put that down to windows media playing being a bit rubbish and not important in my case.  Sorry if I have neglected to tell you anything important.  I usually get told off for this on this forum, but I have tried to give you details about the settings I am using.  The main thing is that I am only doing what I usually do.  If I was exporting to a different format I might expect a different time.  I can tell you that I got bored waiting and cancelled a few times before coming on here.  A couple of times the screen went very white and said windows would close the problemn and notify me of any solution.  Program closed but no useful information (I would not really have expected Windows to give me any!).  Maybe someone here can?   I suppose I had better wait for the three hours or more and at least see what comes out, but cant help being scared it will freeze at 37.34 percent and I will give up after waiting three weeks!  But any suggestions would be helpful.  Sorry not very tech-savvy so please keep it to plain English.  Thanks in advance

Without knowing your computer specs, hard to comment on how long an export ought to take. However, you said yourself that you may have applied rotation to much of the video, and perhaps that is slowing things down from normal.
Please check that your hard drives are defragged and are not getting more than 70-80% full as performance can quickly degrade. I would turn OFF the "Max Bit Depth" and "Max Render Quality" if being used. Should not be needed for DV clips going to DVD. As for pre-rendering the timeline, not recommended. This just adds another layer of compression (quality loss) to the final render, IF you check "Use Previews" in the Export area. If not using Previews, then it is all getting re-rendered anyways, so just a waste of time and drive space really, unless playback is so terrible that you want to render a section to check the results before exporting.
I notice you have MultiPlexing ON for the export - is that how the Sony DVD software wants it? Most authoring programs (like Encore) perform better with separate elements of audio and video, meaning the .wav and .m2v files. Reason being that the DVD program will usually be creating Dolby (AC3) audio for the final DVD, so if you feed it the raw elements, it can convert the .wav to .ac3 quickly, and will NOT need to transcode the video. If you Mux (combine) the audio and video, the audio has then been compressed to lossy MPEG audio, then the DVD software needs to separate the audio and video and re-encode them again in most cases. Not the best workflow. Unless your final DVD uses MPEG audio, but I'm not sure that is a legal part of the spec worldwide, is normally PCM or AC3 for player compatibility.
Not a big fan of anti-virus programs, have found many of the popular ones to really take over and bog down the system. Personally, I use and recommend the free solution of Microsoft Security Essentials. My computer, and those of my kids, have been virus-free the last couple of years since going to that solution, and I see no decrrease in performance and it runs in the background totally transparent to me.
