  • My iMac wireless / network preferences crashing / freezing / not working

My imac recently began to have trouble connecting to my home wifi. This started last month unexpectedly.
Some of the issues I am dealing with:
I am able to connect to any wifi. I can navigate to router settings (192.168.x.xxx). I am running Lion 10.7.
Anytime I try to navigate to System Preferences > Network, the network window goes unresponsive and I am unable to see / edit network settings.
I have moved system preference plisk files to set my preferences to default. This has not helped much (by much, I mean it got me to be able to see network options but it freezes instantly - the network window)
    I cannot get internet access.
I did a disk utility repair and found a corrupted HD. I ran the permission repair and disk repair utility after I reboot the mac with command+r.
While in a Command+R boot environment you have an option to open a safari browser. This browser is able to connect to the internet and access all internet activity.
Does anyone have any advice for me?

Anytime I try to navigate to System Preferences > Network, the network window goes unresponsive and I am unable to see / edit network settings.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Can't boot up after Yosemite, not even in safe mode. Just hangs, or states unable to repair. Any ideas?

When starting up it tried to install Yosemite, got about half way throught then stated it could not repair the disk (it wasn't broken!). Now it doesn't even try to install, it just get half way through a normal boot up and hangs. Have no access to anything so can't even uninstall/delete. The boot disk that came with my Mac doesn't work either. Can anyone think of a way out of this and still save what's on the disk?

Hey there, it looks like you have a serious issue with Windows. However, as far as I can tell, Firefox is unable to cause this to your system. The update is confined to the Firefox program files, at worst it would make Firefox unusable.
Unfortunately I don't have any idea what might have caused the issue in this case, but I'd suggest asking in forums that are specifically for Windows. They might be able to help you with getting back to a functional system.

  • IMac shuts down unexpectedly since Yosemite

So, I apologize in advance for the long story:
I have a late-2009 27" iMac i7 with 8gb Ram and a 1TB HD. I updated my OS to Yosemite soon after it came out. Now, I admit I don't use the computer that often, so it took a while to notice the issues but, we first realized there was a problem in early November when my husband could not download a game (presumably because of the wi-if connectivity issues supposedly fixed in the latest update). It was around a week after he finally was able to download tthe game, that he was playing it and the computer would just shut down out of nowhere. No warning, just shut down and restart with the "your computer shut down unexpectedly" screen. Now, because it happened so many times, I started to get worried about all of my photos and music that is stored on thIs computer, so I went to do a back-up on my time capsule. This was when I noticed my computer had at some point been renamed (not by any human) to "my Computer (3)" when prior to yosemite (as far as I can tell) it was named "my computer". Also at this point I could not for the life of me get the time capsule to back up the computer as it was looking for "my computer" and all that was available was "my computer (3)". This is when it had been working flawlessly for years. I ultimately had to wipe the TC completely, reformat it and start a back up from scratch. It was for the short period of time that the time capsule was not connected to the computer that we noticed it was no longer shutting down unexpectedly. however, one the TC was reconnected and doing a back up, anything extra that you would be doing (with the exception of web surfing) caused the computer to crash. So, simple fix, right? Turn off the auto back ups while and try to remember to turn them on every so often. fine , dandy, whatever. However, I have done the latest yosemite update and the wi-if still does not seem to be staying connected, disconnecting every few minutes. Now I'm seemingly having more issues with a game that is well within the limits for my computer and the game will not start. There are just so many things going wrong with the computer that I'm really concerned that everything is going to disappear off of it one day. Anybody have any clues as to my computer's issue??

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Nik Software Crash: "Could not complete the Color Efex Pro 4 command because of a problem with-"

Nik Software/Photoshop Crash: "Could not complete the Color Efex Pro 4 command because of a problem with the filter module interface."  Define, Viveza work fine, the others, Color Efex, HDR Efex, Silver Efex don't.  I called Nik and they said they were familiar with this problem and that it was an Adobe problem.  They helped me uninstall and re-install the latest version of the filters.  Didn't fix the problem.  I called Adobe technical support, they confirmed that indeed it was an Adobe problem, but, they can't help me because they no longer offer support on CS5.  I'm on an iMac with Mountian Lion 10.8.5, running Photoshop CS5.1.  I searched the internet and found this problem mentioned in several places, just couldn't find the fix.  Interesting coincidence - I had been using Photoshop and the Nik software perfectly fine, even the morning of the day it began to crash.  I got a pop-up message from Adobe asking if they could anonymously monitor my usage to better their products.  I clicked on "Ask me later."  Then, my product crashed every time I tried to use the above-mentioned Nik software filters.  ???  Why would they want to monitor my usage of a product they won't/don't support anyway?  Help someone please - I really love the Nik software.  I paid top dollar for it back in the day because people like Dan Hughes actually answered your questions themselves.  The customer support was the best in the industry.  The opposite is true of Adobe, is it not?

Thank you so much Chris.  I know I'm not the only person to run into this as both Nik/Google and Adobe acknowledged this problem.  I did however try something else to try and isolate the issue further.  I tried editing with Nik/Google Color Efex & Silver Efex, etc., in Aperture, and sure enough, the Nik/Google filters wouldn't open, or they would crash Aperture.  So - it's looking like a Nik/Google problem.  They used to be so good.  The crazy thing is that I had been using Photoshop with the Nik filters just fine, even earlier that very day.  What could have gone wrong?  Was there some kind of automatic update Saturday 3/1/14?  And it was especially weird that it happened immediately after I refused to allow Adobe to (anonymously) monitor my usage.  I'll call Nik/Google back tomorrow and tell them what you've told me, as well as letting them know their filters crashed Aperture too.  I'll report back as soon as I find a fix.  I know I'm not the only one out there who's experienced this.
    Thanks again!

  • I am experiencing difficulties opening some web-based PDF files on my iPad. I was having the same difficulty opening the same PDFs on my iMac (after I upgrade to Yosemite) but was able to overcome it by adjusting the Adobe Reader plug-in settings.

I am experiencing difficulty opening some web-based PDF documents on my iPad. I had exactly the same difficulty on my iMac (after I upgraded to Yosemite) but was able to overcome it by adjusting the Adobe Reader plug-in security settings in Safari (in OSX).
Unfortunately there does not seem to be a way to similarity adjust the security settings in Safari in iOS 8.
The message I get when I attempt to open the PDF (on my iPad) is as follows:
"To view the full contents of this document you need a later version of PDF viewer. You can upgrade to the latest version of Adobe Reader from ..."
Needless to say this is unhelpful for two reasons:
    - I have the very latest version of Adobe Reader; and
    - in iOS Adobe Reader is not a plug-in and plays absolutely no role in opening web-based PDF documents.
If anyone has experienced this difficulty and has been able to overcome it I would be most appreciative to hear of you solution.
    Cheers
    AlbertaRic

If they have set up port forwarding for you already then that is different.  In that case, then you could be experiencing the bug with the most recent release of ARD (3.7.2) and in particular ARD 3.7.2 and Yosemite ARD version 3.8 clients.  It has been reported numerous times in the forums and to Apple that since 3.7.2, clients are frequently unavailable to connect to despite there being no network issue between the remote computer and client computer.  I have not seen anyone report it who was working from outside the LAN to inside the LAN, but I have the same issue with a number of my own computers that are simply on a different subnet, so it stands rot reason that it would happen from a port forwarding location.
I am sometimes able to resolve the issue locally by SSH connecting into the client computer using Terminal on my admin machine and restarting or relaunching the ARD agent on the remote device, then trying to connect to it again after about 30 seconds.
The Terminal commands for this procedure are as follows, though you might need to include a port number from outside the LAN:
    First:
    ssh ipaddress -l adminusername
    (example: ssh 192.168.1.1 -l macadmin)
    Second:
    sudo /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/k ickstart -restart -agent
After that, waiting about 30 seconds and trying to observe or control usually works, though the computer may still fail to show an online or lit-up status indicator.

  • IMac late 2012 random crashes

    Hi Guys and Girls,
I wonder if you could help me please, over the last few months my iMac (late 2012) has been locking up on various apps mainly noticed on mail and safari and a few times now i have have my machine on iTunes playing away whilst I'm in another room and when i return say some 10-15 maybe even 20 mins later i realise the machine has crashed and i have to reboot. and last night whilst watching a few vids on youtube and some other safari pages open i had an error flag up saying something was missing from safari, so i shut safari down and re-opened and the same error so i then shut the comp down and left it over night and now all seems well again.
A friend suggested i could be experiencing the early onset of a hard drive failure... thoughts ?
i pulled this from EtreCheck after reading a few posts about macs freezing

Ok so i have returned my mac's memory back to factory standard and the fault still persists more so the locking up than anything so i had activity monitor up and noticed it appears to be antivirus program, because as soon as mail or safari would stop responding at all i noted that 101.6% of CPU usage was happening under programme esets_daemon
I checked Eset's site i have the latest software version so now I'm wondering should i just disable it, and if so what the best way to go about that without leaving any trace files behind.
    Thanks guys and girls

  • How do I get help reinstalling my Adobe creative suite 6 after IMAC IOS 10.8 crashed?

How do I get help reinstalling my Adobe creative suite 6 after IMAC IOS 10.8 crashed?  Apple had to reinstall operating system and all programs & data were lost.  Adobe System say serial number valid, but qualifying product can not be found on this computer.

When you're installing Adobe upgrades, there are two ways of doing it:
Have an existing, qualifying version already installed. Install the upgrade and enter your upgrade serial number. The installer will detect the earlier qualifying version already installed and the upgrade will finish installing. That is not your scenario.
The second option (and easiest on new computers with no Adobe software previously installed) is to simply install the latest version (usually an upgrade) and enter your upgrade serial number. That's what you've done so far.
The installer will look for an earlier version already installed on your computer. If it cannot find one, it will prompt you to enter the serial number from an earlier version. Once you enter the earlier qualifying version serial number, the upgrade installer will complete the installation. If you cannot find an earlier version serial number then the upgrade will not be licensed and will go into trial mode. From there you can use it for 30 days until it will no longer launch.

iMac 27" i7 models slowly melt down!
Have you ever been wondering why you'r iMac 27" i7 is getting slower and freezing?
Everytime you put the graphics under pressure by gaming or working with hardcore graphics, 3D, etc. for a longer period (like 3-5 hours) you'r iMac 27" i7 gets hot... VERY HOT.
Everytime your iMac gets hot, it makes a small damage to the processor, and the computer gets slower and slower and slower...
It all starts with the graphics getting slower, which make you feel your computer is getting slower!
(if you'r a iMac 27" i7 owner and you'r computer never gets slower, please go to wikipedia and search for MIRACLE)
Then the reboot time gets longer and longer, and sometimes the "killer screen" appears at start-up (screen freeze and turns white or light blue)
Right before your iMac 27" i7 take it's last breath, screen flickering appears on you'r desktop and applications, and finally you got a screen with only stripes or graphic parts or just one color.
From now on you'r iMac will only boot when it's cold and after 15 mins when it get's warm.. gues what?.... FREEEZE #?§!""##
You know the processor is completly dead when you'r not able to reboot anymore, and find yourself on your way to the nearest apple repair store.
    Here is what i think...
The big 27" SCREEN, the i7 PROCESSOR and the big GRAPHIC CARD PROCESSOR requires alot of power which heating up the small space alu cabinet.
The fans is factory set to make minimum noise and just barely cool down "normal tasks" like surfing the net, sorting pictures, watching movies, working in numbers and pages and so on...
As soon you start working with more demanding graphic app's or games, the fan does not cool properly, and you get NO warnings that you'r computer is about to get very sick!
I also suspect the heat causes damage to the built in WiFi and CD/DVD drive, since the i7's have alot of problems with lost wifi connections and brooken CD/DVD drives.
I've had all imac 27" i7 models since it first came on the market, and every single one of them ended up with a overheated and smashed processor.
Today my 3rd iMac i7 crashed..
I work with Logic Pro, Final Cut, Photoshop, Illustrator and play Battlefield 3 in Windows 7 on my mac...
WARNING! Windows only speed up the "melt down" process!
    Hope it helps you?

    This is nothing new.
I have been saying what you've been saying since I got my first, uses 2009 iMac almost 9 months, ago.
I have written numerous posts in this forum about this issue.
Sensitive computer electronics do not like heat. Especially too high or unusually high heat like what these newer design iMacs internally generate.
High or excessive heat shortens the life of electronic components. Especially the electronic components in computers and iMacs, specifically.
The design of 2009-2012 iMacs simply are not designed sufficiently to properly exhaust the internal heat build up inside these iMacs. The iMac aluminum backplate enclosure absorbs and holds much more heat on the inside than is convected outward from the outside of the enclosure.
How have I dealt with this.
First, I removed the front glass of the iMac.
This has had two effects. One is that the screen is not as glossy any longer and two, it allows some of the heat, more or less convect out from the front of the iMac more freely.
Third, I run Sofware fan controls for the fans and have ramped them up enough to keep the iMacs internal temps cooler without over revving the fans to cause them to prematurely fail. The iMac is a little noisier, but not annoyingly so.
Fourth, I run a small external fan on the iMac's aluminum backplate/enclosure to cool my iMac from the rear.
I Am hoping all of these things will extend my iMac's life cycle.
Having a Mac burn out within 3-5 years in completely unacceptable to me.
Especially given that I still have an almost 10 year old PowerMac G4 MDD that is going strong that has many, many hours of use and upgrades within it.

  • Any DVD I rent from the red box or at the library my 27"iMac and my MacBook Pro will not operate.

Any DVD I rent from the red box or at the library my 27"iMac and my MacBook Pro will not operate.  The Mac's take the DVD's and it sounds like it's trying to run the DVD.  After about 10 seconds the Mac just spits it out.  I am using the newest version of the Beta Yosemite OS X 10.10.3 Version.  I'm a little more than a novice user, just to keep in mind... Can anyone help me fix this problem?

Aside from running the beta (and not being allowed to discuss anything at all about it anywhere including these forums), I have found that some commercial DVDs (and actually also music CDs) are coded such that they will not play in any device that could ostensibly be used to copy the content due to DRM/copyright issues. The DVDs played just fine in both of my DVD players hooked up to my TVs and the music CDs worked in my stereo system.
Have you tried to play those in a regular DVD player?

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for this very occasion.  Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup copy, not good, then you can redownload some itunes purchases in some countries:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
