IMac 9.1 install-no shutdown

Folks-
have done extensive searching for an answer to this problem and either there isn't one posted (which i doubt), or i can't figure out how to apply posted information to my particular problem.
problem: just installed 9.1, booted from apple 9.0.4 disk, and all seems fine except for shutdown. can't do it. when commanded, desktop icons disappear, and i swear, but i may be wrong, control strip at bottom left at screen blinks, then machine freezes.
i have seen where people have "zapped" the PRAM, but i have not done this. i have also read where there is a control strip extension, but i have not ventured there either. i've been sitting on this for about three days trying to find the answer. if anyone can help me i would appreciate it greatly. if possible, please pretend you're explaining the fix to a ten year old;-)

Have you been able to boot the machine to OS 9.1 on the hard drive? Or are you still booted to the OS 9.0.4 disk?
Some possibilities -
• One or more preference files are damaged, or non-compliant for some reason. To address that, try throwing away the following preference files, which can be found in the Preferences folder in System Folder -
Energy Saver Preferences
Finder Preferences
Mac OS Preferences
Persistent RAM Disk
Power Mgt Preferences
System Preferences
Then restart (any way you can) and test.
• A third party extension may be interfereing. A couple of known culprits are File Saver and Shareway IP. You can disable those in Extensions Manager control panel, accessible via the Control Panels item in the Apple menu. Then restart and test.
There are other possible causes and things to try. Try the above first.
It would not hurt to rebuild the desktop (this is often a good thing to do after any software install or update).
To rebuild the desktop safely, restart - immediately hold down the Shift key until you get the "Extensions Off" message; then release Shift and hold down the Command and Option keys until you get the splash screen asking if you want to rebuild the desktop; click yes (or okay). Once that's done, restart to turn your extensions back on.

My iMac will only restart or shutdown from the power button, it also will not logoff users. It starts ok, but only after a hard reboot?? I have repaired permisions and no change. I have a clone I can restore from but any ideas whats up here?
The only things that I know I have altered are deleting files saved during migration from Panther (months ago)and running Unbuntu Live CD.

Are you booting into Ubuntu Linux? Most of us here wouldn't now anything to do with it. If the problem is occurring when booted into Mac OS X, it may be a sign of data corruption in the power management and user settings. Some corruption is easy to repair such as fixing the directory (which I'd only do after a clone). Here's how according to my FAQ:

Vista Business 64 on iMac - drivers wont install

I installed Vista Business 64 bit on my 2.4 GHz iMac. The install went fine until I got to the initial boot of Vista. When I inserted the Mac disk to install the drivers, a little dialogue box popped up and said that Vista x64 was not supported on my computer. Oh really? The operating system runs just fine, but it isn't any good without the Apple drivers for networking, etc... Does anyone know of a workaround for this? Why does Apple get to dictate which version of Windows I run on the computer that I bought and paid for? If they support 32 bit Windows, what is the difference if the support 64 bit Windows? Too much competition, I guess.

Unfortunately, the iMacs are not officially supported by Apple for use with 64-bit versions of Windows. They enforce this lack of support with their Boot Camp drivers installer. I won't pretend to understand why the MacBook Pro and MacPro models are the only officially supported models for 64-bit Windows...but, that's the way Apple wants it for now.
I've put Vista 64-bit on 24" iMacs before, and, it just takes some creative driver installation. I didn't chase down trying to get everything functional (e.g. the Boot Camp Control Panel).
For the wired ethernet: Marvell Yukon Gigabit Ethernet Drivers (obtain from Marvell's site)
For the sound: Realtek HD Audio Drivers (obtain from Realtek's site)
For the video: Obtain the latest ATI Catalyst driver package. Use Mobility Modder to enable them for install on your iMac (http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool.php)

I am a fitst time user of the new airport extreme time capsule 2TB. I have a mac book pro and an imac. I installed the router today and got my computers online wirelessly. BUT I cannot get my previous wireless printers to connect with the router.

BUT I cannot get my 2 printers that were previously wireless to find the router signal. The worked fine on my current set up OS Mounitain Lion 10.8.4. Apple tells me it is the printer mfr issue and printer companies tell me it is apple issue. Any help appreciated.

Arguably, they're both right.
Changing your router changes everything, so your best course of action is to research the respective printer's documentation and determine how to reset them to factory default condition. Then, add them again using System Preferences > Print & Scan.
For that, I recommend you first "reset the printing system" according to these instructions: Mac OS X: How to reset the printing system. Its instructions for Lion are identical to those for Mountain Lion.
As the article states, it will remove all your existing printers, leaving the Mac's printing system in a similar "factory default" condition ready for you to create a new print queue for each printer, which you should probably do.

You should be able to Save as: iWork 08, but i don't know how it works on Mountain Lion. On my Snow Leopard the Save as window has a part looking like this

HT4718 I want to sell my iMac with clean install

I bought my iMac with Lion installed. I purchased Mountain Lion and upgradded it to Mountain Lion. I am getting ready to sell it and want to sell it with a clean install of Mountain Lion. I have a DVD that I burnrd on another Apple PC that I used to do the install on my iMac if that helps.

Frankly, I don't know if that would work - it'll be "sitting" at the app store for your buyer, so that should be ok; as far as I know, the app store retains the settings of your Apple ID and machine ID - but I do not know if those settings are also buried somewhere in the OS system. You can try it - maybe it'll work; if it won't, I'm sure you'll get an error message and you can try the Apple store idea. Oh, and by the way, you said that your machine came with Lion? If that is preinstalled on the machine, you are allowed to make a one time transfer of the OS, but you will need to call Apple to accomplish that - this may involve some process/setting that Apple needs to do (I don't know the exact process since I've not had to do this, but just quoting what the license agreement stipulates) - this probably also has to do with ID's.

Downgrade Lion/Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard
1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer
      loads select your language and click on the Continue
      button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the
      Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the
      mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status
      of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then
      the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART
      info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on
      the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions
      from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS
      Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
      partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on
      the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups made while on Snow Leopard, then you may do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions. If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion/Mountain Lion files.

I recently bought a 27" iMac with Lion installed. Should I be able to download the upgrade for my MacBook Pro without paying. If so what should I do. If I go to the App Store I'll end up paying £20.99

No you will need to purchase the upgrade. However if you own other Macs you want to upgrade once you have purchased Lion then you can upgrade the additional machines. Of course the additional machines must be using the same Apple ID. As long as the additional machine's meet the minimum system requirements listed below you are all set.

Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
2GB of memory
OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

Your post is very confusing. It sounds like you want to run Windows 7 using Parallel's software. If so yes you need a full license of Windows 7 and will need to purchase it. Please follow the instructions in the manual you got when you bough Parallel's and if you have difficulty following them you can find support for their product on the Parallel's forums at:

Sorry, no. The versions for Macs and iDevices are different.

I play music on my hi fi via an airport express attached to my iMac. Since installing maverick the sound quality is terrible and I get frequent distortion, which never happened before. I have reset the airport express and reconfigure my wireless settings.

I would love to turn itunes sound off as you used to be able to do, but this I believe can't be done.

When the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is connected by Ethernet, you will find an option in the AirPort Utility, labeled: Enable AirTunes over Ethernet on the Music pane. Just select this option to allow streaming iTunes via the AirPort's Ethernet port. You should also be able to disable the AX's wireless so that it shouldn't interfere with the nearby TC.
