IMac 99% dead

My Mac is barley a year old and it doesn't work.
I am running OS 10.6
It takes 5 min to get to the user log in screen.
10+ min after log in for the pinwheel to go away the desktop to load and be able to select things on the bottom bar.
5+ Min for programs to launch once they launch they lag they won't work or respond and won't close.
I can't force close anything.
The only program that works is WoW and it only logs in then freezes.
The only programs I have added are WoW, and the Word package.
I have many files and videos I have made or found online.
This is the second Mac I received, the first one broke on day 2 it turned on then fried.
I am very p-off now.
I have files on there I can't loose, a books I am working on.
Files from when I was an officer in my Fraternity, videos I made and haven't uploaded yet, Nothing is backed yet, I have only used the computer 4 months, I spent the rest of the time in ICU after a crash.
So not only is the computer less then a year old, I haven't even used it half a year.
What is wrong and how can I fix this.
I am at a loss and very upset.

what is the total capacity of your boot disk and how much space is left ?
have you run +verify disk+ and +permission repair+ sessions using *disk utility* ?
you could try booting into _*safe mode*_, then rebooting normally.

  • Mains power cut to house - iMac now DEAD

Today I turned off the mains power to change a light bulb in a room that has given me some problems with sparking in the past.  Unbeknown to me, my son was using my iMac... (no, I failed to check properly, now I am suffering, believe me..).  After I switched the power on, my son exclaimed "Well, now the computer won't turn on!"  We have a surge protector which would have been on and working, but as the computer - a 17" intel duo core iMac purchased new in mid 2006 is old, and the surge protector is the same age, I am sick with worry wondering what it could be, and there are no repair shops near us open tomorrow, or even in our town!  I have to wait a week, and travel 100kms to the apple service specialists.... This computer is home to all our music (massive amounts my son has on there) and my photos - thousands, a serious hobby.  As well the computer runs Final Cut Pro Studio software, as we do a bit of video editing.  I have backed up no files, always meant to get around to it.....  As the computer is older, the main thing that devastates me at this point is my photos - a life history really, and thousands of hours too, photoshopping, etc.....  I have tried to computer in different power outlets, tried turning on, off, unplugging, all I can find recommended on these kind of sites - but to no avail.  The screen is black, and not a sound can be heard.  Completely dead.  Not one sign of life in the 8 hours since.....  I have been reading about PRAM batteries... this computer has had a massive amount of use, daily and in the house of serious creative insomniacs - for six years now, so almost daily serious use, and as yet just two dead keyboards, no other problems.... I got some extra RAM when it was purchased.  But recently it has not liked shutting down (it hasn't) so it has been pretty much permanently on, with the screensaver up,..... could this suggest a dying PRAM battery?  experts please, this internet reading has done my head in, now I have to wait a week!!!!! to know if our photos and music can be recovered.... if not the computer itself revived....?
Thank you for any help.  I know, I am SUCH an idiot for not checking all electronic devices were off, but as we know, this MAC hasn't been turning off recently...

Here is what Apple says to do with an iMac that won't start, it's from the owner's manual.
If your iMac won’t turn on or start up   Make sure the power cord is plugged into your iMac and a functioning power outlet.
Restart your computer while holding down the Command (x) and R keys, until the computer restarts. When the Mac OS X Utilities pane appears, select an option to repair your disk, restore your software, or reinstall Mac OS X and Apple applications. For more information, see “Repairing, Restoring, or Reinstalling Mac OS X Software” on page 44.
42 Chapter 4 Problem, Meet Solution
Press the power button (®) and immediately hold down the Command (x), Option, P, and R keys until you hear the startup sound a second time. This resets the parameter RAM (PRAM).
If you recently installed memory, and your iMac sounds tones every five seconds, make sure that the memory is correctly installed and that it is compatible with your iMac. Check whether removing the memory you installed allows your iMac to start up (see page 38).
Unplug the power cord and wait at least 30 seconds. Plug the power cord in again and press the power button (®) to start up your iMac.
If you still can’t start up your iMac, see “Learning More, Service, and Support” on page 54 for information about contacting Apple for service.

  • Second 27" iMac with dead pixels

I'm intrigued to see how many others have purchased the new 27" iMac's and have managed to get one without any dead pixels.
I am currently on my 2nd 27" iMac and both of them have a dead pixel right in the middle of the screen, first one was black, this second one is red.

btw, is there any dead pixel policy?
It's a fault just like any other type of fault. Your brand new iMac's pixels are all meant to be working. If you receive one where they clearly are not you are right to have it replaced. This is not a PC, it is a top of the range Apple product for which we expect and demand the highest quality. After all, we're paying top dollar (or £) for this level of build and design. Accept nothing less.
Actually, Apple considers one dead pixel 'within spec'.
However, if you've only just bought it, you can choose to return it for any reason within 14 days.

  • IMAC screen dead.. Switch to external monitor?

Mu son's iMac has a dead screen. Black after startup... The computer is running, but he needs to switch the startup screen to the external monitor so he can make any additional backups he needs before chucking it into the garbage. Actually, it is under warranty, but he has files that need to come off it.
SOOOO, is the a keyboard shortcut to switch the monitors???
    Help.

    HI Mike,
you could try command command + f1 (the key next to escape)
if that dose not work try fn + command + f1.
Alternatively if you have another mac and a firewire cable. you could plug the imac into your other mac, and boot the iMac into Firewire target disk mode; and copy the files to the other computer. Firewire disk mode makes your imac act like it's an external hard drive.

  • IMac CRT dead, buy G4?

    Dear all,
Now that my iMac CRT is dead, I'm thinking about getting a refurbished mac. Does anyone have any advice about G4s vs eMacs? I don't do anything more elaborate than surfing, AIM and iTunes. I'll be new to OS X.
    Thanks
    Irene

    Hey iMac,
Does anyone have any advice about G4s vs eMacs? I don't do anything more elaborate than surfing, AIM and iTunes. I'll be new to OS X.
Well the eMac CRTs are VERY heavy but I always thought the picture was very good. I'd avoid the first one, 700, it had the IVAD problem. The 800s and above are nice machines. There was a power supply recall on the 1 and 1.25 GHz machines and this can work to your advantage. I picked up a 1.25 for $50 that was very slow and would freeze up all the time. Turns out it was in the serial # range and Apple fixed it for free.
As to the iMac G4s I like the 17" 800s I think that monitor is very nice and compared to the 15" they're way better. My wife has been using one for 5 months now.
They're a little hard to get since people love the way they look so they're really in high demand. I just got one for $100 that had a bad hard drive and the lady said she didn't believe the response she got on Craig's.

  • Using iMac with dead internal drive long term

I've got a friend with an iMac with a definitely dead internal HDD. Got it back running with an external and it seems to work. We also selected that external as the default start up in System Prefs.
I'm curious was to whether, however, he can just run it forever with that HDD inside. I'm not at his machine, but when working on it I saw some evidence that there were attempts to access it, from like mds for Spotlight, and so on. If it was one of mine I'd at least yank the drive, but he doesn't wanna pay to repair it and is quite content with the external. But we'd like to know if that wonky drive is gonna cause issues, or if there's a way through software to disable it forever.

Add it to Spotlight's Privacy prefPane to preclude indexing. That's all that needs doing.

  • Is iMac Drive dead?

I think my 2007 24" iMac HD is dead, want to confirm.
Cannot open in recovery HD, get folder with question mark on start up.  Startup from ext HD, it appears in disk utility with name of "media".  I cannot use repair or verify disk since the are greyed out, and DU will not let me erase or refomat (greyed out).
On startup to external drive I get dialog box informing me there is a problem with the disk and offering button to initialize.  I check that box but nothing happens.
Am I right, is it dead?
PS: It doesn't show up in target disk mode either

If you don't have the original OS X DVD, an alternative would be TechTool Deluxe if you had AppleCare on the system, or TechTool Pro which can be bought. They both do similar testing to the AHT.
If I were replacing the hard drive and needed someone else to do it, I wouldn't take it to an Apple store. Rather, I'd buy the drive and take it to an Apple Authorized Service Provider, and ask them to install it (confirm with them first before buying the drive). Apple can use refurbished drives, and as I recall the Apple work carries a 90 day warranty. If you buy your own drive, you can get one with a 5 year warranty.  Also, the Apple store usually keeps the drive they take out, for recycling and trade-in. Some people are uncomfortable with that, due to private data on the drive. You can find the closest AASP at http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/
If a new drive costs around $100, depending on size of course, figure double that for labor and drive. Might be on the high side, but that's a ballpark number.
In the 3.5" serial ata (SATA) drives, there are lots of choices. I tend to look at Western Digital Black drives, as they come with a 5 year warranty. I don't even look at those with a 2 year warranty, as that's not competitive with 3 and 5 year warranty's. I like http://www.newegg.com as a source, as they have good prices, quick shipping, and many user comments on the drives.

  • IMac is dead

    Hey!
Whilst preparing my iMac (late 2009 i5) for bringing it in for the harddisc replacement program, the worst of all things happened.. While it was booting veeeerry slowww (grey screen with apple logo and the spinning icon), it automatically turned off and doesn't say a word since then. The harddisc had notably difficulties the past few days (backing up my stuff became a very slow process) with long periods of no write/read activity. Did some troubleshooting on the machine, but there is nothing what really helps (SMC reset, reinstall memory etc). It seems to me it was a fatal harddisc crash, but some articles on the internet state that a harddisc failure doesn't cause the computer to be totally dead. So what to do? Just bring it in and hope it will be over when they replace the harddisc? They probably need the computer to function properly to have the harddrive replaced, right? Well will call them first thing tomorrow and ask. After two broken iPhones, a broken iMac g5, and a sick 27" iMac i'm starting to lose faith in Apple. Mainly because every single item i bought from Apple had problems.
    Regards,
    Marinus

Like you said, just take it in. It's not like you have any other choice at this point.

  • 2nd iMac with dead pixels

Just curious if anyone else is having dead pixels (non-functional pixels, black) problems with their new iMacs. I own 4 LCDs and use two more at work and I don't have this problem with those displays. I am a web developer and graphic designer so I am a little picky when it comes to displays, but I just bought this iMac (11-30-07) and it is the second one (returned the first one) to have defective pixels. The first had a dead pixel in the top left area (right where I work in PSD), and the second has four scattered in the bottom area, and they seem to be popping up with regularity. The easiest fix is to buy a second high quality display and just use this iMac as a dual monitor setup . . . but then with that thinking, why didn't I just buy the Mac Pro? All-in-all, this is still a pretty decent machine. . . .

I to have recently purchased a 20" Intel Based iMac at my local Apple Store, after booting the beautiful computer up i noticed two small pixels where black. I plan on returning the computer to the Apple Store and getting a brand new one. And i know that a couple of pixels is tiny and nearly noticeable unless you look for it, then when you find it the thing just screams out at you, but considering the prices Apple charges i expect nothing but a perfect product and so should you.

  • IMac G5 dead pixels?

    Hi everyone!
I've never posted a question before so I'll make it short and sweet. Basically my iMac G5 I purchased in May 2007 has a 2 1/2 inch vertical white line on the right side. I tried calling Apple Support and since I don't have Apple Protection I have to pay to speak to someone which is fine, but I know that is a common problem and if the answer is you're out of luck I don't want to pay additional money when I could use that money towards a new computer. I could also go up to the Mac store but from reading different blogs/threads unless I'm covered under the LCD pixel abnormality I'll just end up spending more money to not get it fixed. Any suggestions, updates, restores anyone would suggest or am I better off selling my iMac as is and getting a protection plan for my next Mac purchase? Thank you so much!

Excuse me? There is no need for that tone.
I got my info from Samsung here and if they haven't updated their site to reflect the new policy, then that is not my fault. Furthermore, if they can't update their site to reflect this policy, I doubt that they will stand behind it. If I had a "no-defect" policy, I would be sure to have it plastered all over my site.
I stick to my opinion that a single dead pixel is acceptable. If perfection is the only thing that you will accept, then you can prepare yourself for a lifetime of dissappointment and ensuing therapy.

  • New iMAC 27" dead pixels

i got delivery of my first mac, iMac 27" high spec machine and it had three dead pixels.. one phone call to apple and ivw got to say, there service is second to none.. straight away they arranged a second one to be made and delivered, and the first one picked up. i got my second iMAC within two weeks of the phone call.
then the second one had specs of dust under the glass!!! Again, exceptional after sales and im sitting here waiting for my third iMAC to be delivered..
half of me thinking am i being too fussy, but for the £2500 ive spent i expect perfection and apple agree.
anyone who has these issues, if your patient like me, apple have made my problems simply stress free, and im praying the third one is perfect..
my question.. am i being to fussy? three dead pixels , then dust under glass... i mainly do photographic tweaking on the imac so i hope you dont think so??

hi mark wania, i dont think you are fussy. you have the right to ask for replacement because you pay everything for it. i dont see anything wrong. i have similar problem with dead pixels.
do you know how much i have to spend for an iMac in Malaysia? you times the figure with 3.6. and that is about a month salary for a regular executive.
i have spoke to JUDE on this issue. it is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE that apple support set a number of tolerable defect to them. they mentioned about at least 11 pixels to enable me to get a replacement. I am talking about product defect. it does not matter to me whether it is 11 pixels, 100 pixels or even 1. I pay for the price and I am expecting a good product and kind service.
to me, apple should addressed this manufacturing or delivery issue properly.
I have done what the support team asked me to do yesterday and it seems that this is nothing to do with software, drivers or even operating system. I am going to call for a replacement or repair tomorrow as i need to check other thing as well like iSight camera. it sounds like more and more people having defect items. those comments make me feels bad that I might have chosen the wrong computer manufacturer.

  • New iMac with dead pixels

I just got a brand new 21.5 iMac it has 2 dead pixels, is this normal what's the acceptable number of dead pixels?

Here is an Apple KB article pertaining to dead pixels. It does not list a number that is acceptable or not.
But, Apple has a 90 day return policy, unless I believe you have a custom configuration. So I would return it if the dead pixels are in a place where you see them all the time and it bothers you.

  • Late 2009 imac with dead LCD; external monitor?

    Hello, all
I need some help.  The LCD on my late 2009 iMac has failed.  I took it into the Apple Store and they told me it was dead and it would be $500+ to replace it, which I do not have.
The machine is intact, however, other than that!  The Apple Store rep even told me that they tried it with an external monitor, to validate that the video card is working, and it worked fine.  Great news!
My question, however, is how do I get it to boot to an external monitor?
I have booted the mac in target disk mode, booted from that target disk on another mac, and changed the settings so that the display is mirrored onto a second monitor.  When I boot into the iMac, however, I get the Apple Logo and the "white screen of death" and the machine never finishes loading using the external monitor.  I need to know if there is some way to force it to use that monitor for the primary display.
Cheers all, and thanks for any help!

    Hello,
I'm wondering if boting from it's drive on the oother Mac didn't write some of the other Mac's Monitor info to it?
Instead of Mirroring, what if you make the external monitor the main one by dragging the Dock to it?
If you can ever get it to boot, this thread may be helpful if you want mirroing...

  • Imac G5 dead- cant reinstall OS X 10.4

    Hey there,
My Imac G5 decided to stop working recently and now when it is switched on it hangs up a the grey apple screen with the spinning cog and then eventually the apple symbol turns into a prohibitory symbol.
I have tried a number of things: I have tried to to start in safe mode( can't seem to do so),
I have started in single user mode( gone through fcsk etc and it says my HD is fine)
, used target disk mode with another Imac G5( erased my HD then used disk warrior to rebuild).
I also tried to reinstall OS X from the host Imac when in TDM with no luck- Although when I reconnect in TDM and the dead Imacs HD appears it has all my new settings, name etc.
Now when I even start in single user mode I can't do anything( tells me that it cannot find the root).
I hope someone can give me insight to this problem.
extra info: no externals plugged in, I dont seem to have my grey imac g5 recovery disc(the other Imac i have access to is running 10.3.9 so I assume I cant use its discs-as the would be going backwards, I have the black 10.4 install disc.
    cheers
    Graeme

    Graeme:
It is difficult to tell what is going on from your description. Here is what I suggest:
    1. If you do not have an up-t0-date backup, boot into Firewire Target Disk Mode and backup.
    2. Boot from your Tiger install disk and reformat your HDD:
Warning! This procedure will destroy all data on your Hard Disk Drive. Be sure you have an up-to-date, tested backup of at least your Users folder and any third party applications you do not want to re-install before attempting this procedure.
Boot from the install CD holding down the "C" key.
    Select language
Go to the Utilities menu (Tiger) Installer menu (Panther & earlier) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select Partition tab in main panel. (You are about to create a single partition volume.)
Select number of partition in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
(Note: 1 partition is normally better for an internal HDD. External HDDs usually have more than one)
Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
    Select Erase tab
Select the sub-volume under Manufacturer ID (usually Macintosh HD).
Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format show up correctly.
    Click Erase button
    Quit Disk Utility.
Open installer and begin installation process.
Choose to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer drivers.
Check box to install X11 (Tiger) BSD Subsystems (Panther & earlier).
    Proceed with installation.
After installation computer will restart for setup.
    After setup, reboot computer.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
    Click Repair Disk Permissions.
    Connect to Internet.
Download and install 10.4.10 Combo update
    Computer will restart after updates.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
    Click Repair Disk Permissions.
Please post back with update or with further questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • IMac 27" Dead Pixel....

    Hi
I'd purchased an iMac 27 inch online from the Apple Store on the 20.05.2010 and taken out Applecare. While cleaning the screen today I noticed a speck of dust behind the screen, on further inspection I've noticed a dead pixel. I spoke to Applecare, a collection has been arranged so they can take it away and inspect it. Anybody any ideas what the outcome of this will be?
    Thanks
    Baz

Unless they are saying that they will replace the display then cancel the pick up. On a display that large Apple rarely does anything for just one dead pixel.
