Try smc and pram reset.
See if you can boot in safe mode.
See if you can boot from your lion recovery partition to use Disk Utility to repair/verify your drive (not repair permissions).

As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...

  • Computer wakes from sleep but screen remains black even after restart

So, I installed SL yesterday and everything seemed fine. Last night, I closed my computer's monitor (putting it to sleep) for the night. This morning, when I opened it, the screen was black. I could not see anything, so I just restarted the computer.
On restart, the screen remained black.
After some experimentation, I realized that the computer was actually running, but I just couldn't see anything. So, I typed my password - screen was still black.
I then pressed the power button and enter - shutting down the computer properly.
After it shut down, I turned it on and the screen came on as normal...
    What's going on here?
I checked some other threads and there was some potential issue with the iphoto screensaver, but I am not sure if that is the case here or not.
Any thoughts on how to fix this or prevent it form happening in the future?

I just had a similar thing occur. After resetting the pram the screen came back on.
I had noticed some problems with the hot corners for sleep mode earlier so I have deactivated them now to see if this was the problem. The only other thing I can think of is the recent Java update. I installed it right before the problem occurred.

  • My ipod is on you can here the sounds and everything but the screen stays black, what can i do?

for days my ipod 4g screen has stayed black and i plug in the charger i can hear the sound just cant see the image it just stays black what can i do? is ti broken? what part needs to be fixed?

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

  • My iphone 4S vibrates and pings but screen remains black.  Happens about every 30 min :(

Iphone 4s will vibrate and ping at the same time.  Happens about every 30 min. The screen remains black.  No one at Apple can help.  My daughter has the same apps and her 3GS does not do this.  I bought 3 other 4S at the same time last month and theirs does not do this either.

Try this support document http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3281 and if that doesn't work, then make an appointment with the Genius Bar at the Apple store to have the hardware checked.

  • HT3964 Had a power outage. My iMac comes on but screen is black. How do I get the screen to light up again?

Had a power outage and my iMac is on but the screen is black. How do I get it to light up again?

Your system may have suffered hardware damage if not connected to a UPS  (Universal Power Supply), you can try doing a SMC reset, please click iMac SMC and PRAM reset for instructions. If that does not work make an appointment at your local Apple Store or AASP. BTW you can find UPS's at your local office supply store.

  • IPOD touch Screen is blacked out. I charges and itunes recognizes it, only the screen remains black. Is there any way to fix this Problem. I have the latest software update and I restored it several times, but screen remains blacked out.

My IPOD touch 4th gen screen does not display.  The software seems to be working and itunes recognizes the device.  I have restored it and reset the IPOD several times but the screen is still black.  What can I do to fix it? your help is very much appreciated. I do not have access to an apple store since I am stationed in Afghanistan.

If you restored to factory defaults/new iPod (you did not say the type of restore your performed) and are still having the problem that indicates a hardware problem. An appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order..

  • I am having start up problems with my touchsmart 300, the pc powers up but screen remains black

I tried disconnecting all cables including power cable and holding power button for 30 secs and then restarting but the problem persists.  The fan starts up but the screen does not and the pc makes no beeps.  Any advice on how to get it going?

Hello Ric66: What's is holding start button 30 sec stuff. Stop doing that does nothing but destroys computer. It is not a diesel truck. Just turn on computer press and hold f8 key. Now you are in save mode move your arrow keys select save mode with networking. Now open up HP Assisant click maintain then click on tune up and check mark everything and enabled microsoft defragmeter and run it. I had you open it in safe mode with networking in case you needed futher assistant. Perform this task it is not a bad Ideal to scan your computer for malware and viruses. Now llet tune complete close all open windows and restart computer. If for some unkown reason the computer does not start up normal. Then press F8 again safe mode this time you are going to perform a back date recovery open up recovery choose restore to earlier point of time. Yes there is a short waiting period between Windows 7 and logon screen with black screen it is normal. That your start up is corrupted and defragmeter will take care of it. That is why you should scheduled PC tune ups.

  • IPhone 4s screen is black, what can I do?

My iPhone 4s has been acting weird, now the screen is black.  Yes, it is fully charged.  What can I do?

A reset may help. Tap and hold the Home button and the On/Off buttons for approximately 15-20 seconds, until the Apple logo reappears. When the logo appears, release both buttons.
No content is affected by this procedure.

  • I have a iphone 4s, but the screen turned black what can I do to fix the problem?

How can i fix my iphone 4s?

    Hey Tink2010!
I have an article here for you that will help you troubleshoot this issue with your iPhone:
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting

Display has no backlight or dark screen
Toggle the ringer switch to see if the unit vibrates. If it does, it could be that iPhone is getting power, but is not displaying any image.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
While connected to the iPhone charger, try to reset the iPhone.
If the low-battery screen appears, charge the iPhone.
Thanks for coming to the Apple Support Communities!

  • IMac has power but screen is Black

Hello All, I have a 20" iMac Alum 2.0Ghz, Intel, ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT that was working great. Yesterday morning it wouldn't start. First thing I did was check all plugs and verified they were working. Then I unplugged all unnecessary peripherals and checked these discussions for similar problems.
When turning it on, I could feel the HD spinning up, but there was no indicator light on the front bezel. None of the keyboard commands worked, I reset SMC and tried PRAM, removed memory and switched slots(memory was factory installed and never upgraded-1Gig). I unplugged it for a half hour and tried again..No go.
According to the Service Manual for this mac, it was either the ac/dc converter, logic board or power supply. The iMac is still under warranty so I took it to the Apple Store and they concurred with my diagnosis. To my surprise, they called me and said that it was the Graphics Board that failed.
I have two questions, first why was there no indicator light on the front panel? That is for the power supply diagnostics only. The unit was getting power to at least the HD. Next, is the Graphics Card used in startup(single-user mode)? I thought that was all controlled by the firmware. If not, could someone tell me how the Graphics Card plays into the loading of the BSD or pre-graphics startup.
    Thanks,
    Glynn

If you have to have a smartphone or the Droid, yes, the secondary market is probably your best choice.  Just be careful and clear tthe ESN with Verizon before you buy.  And do everything else you would do with someone you don't know.
