IMac AC power cord

Hi, my new iMac was delivered today and the power cord comes with 2-flat pins with a 15 cm green-and-yellow cable at the side. At the end of the cable is a little fork. I am in Hong Kong SAR where the standard is a 3-square-pin plug. No way do our sockets cater for this kind of plug.
Should I be getting some other type of power cord?

Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Look in your manual for the AppleCare phone number and contact Apple directly. I would think you should have received the correct power cord for Hong Kong.

Roger

The mains/power cord is the same for all modern Macs, so no worries there.  Any Mac power cord will work.

  • IMac G5 does not turn on after power cord knocked off

I have an iMac G5 that I recently passed on to my daughter. For the past few years it has been working fine except for one occasion that I replaced the power supply. At that time it was still covered by warranty and Apple sent me a replacement unit that I installed myself. Lately, the power cord was knocked off while the computer was on and now it will not turn on completely. It starts for about 15 seconds up to the gray Apple logo then the screen goes blank. I monitored the LEDs and all 3 do turn on then the computer shuts down. At first I thought it's the power supply that was affected with the power cord accident, and bought a replacement unit. I have just installed it but still the same problem exist. I am now asking for help from the expert souls out there to save this computer. Thanks.

No more ideas except to try starting from the install disc and see if that works. Resetting the PRAM might jolt it back to life, it's worth a try, but I am not hopeful.
If you do take it in, please let us know whether it was the logic board...

can i take apart the imac power cord to put it through a hole in my desk.  I'm able to get the ring off, but dont want take the housing off incase it breaks

I hear you.  The reason I asked is that on the computer end of the cable, I took the ring off and it looks like there are some clasps around the housing, so I was wondering if these were for the purpose of threading the the cable.  I will try and get some pictures.  The drill is charging, however!!
    Thanks

  • Taking my iMac from  USA to India - Power Cord

I am taking my iMac from USA to India. Can anybody tell me if my computer supports the Indian power voltage Do I just buy a new power cord that plugs into the Indian Power sockets or will I need to use an Voltage Converter.
As far as I know US has Electricity at 110V/60Hz, India has it at 230V/50Hz.
IMac Intel Core Duo, 2GB RAM, 500GB HD   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    From the iMac Specs page;
    Electrical and environmental requirements
    • Meets ENERGY STAR requirements
    • Line voltage: 100-240V AC
    • Frequency: 50Hz to 60Hz, single phase
    • Maximum continuous power: 180W

    • Storage temperature: -40° to 185° F (-40° to 85° C)

  • Replace iMac power cord

I moved from China and need a new power cord to use in the USA. Where can I get a power chord that works with an early 2008 iMac. Online some seem to say I can use any generic cord, while others say that I need an apple replacement? I'm willing to get the real cord if needed but can't seem to find it. I can find cords for later and earlier models but not mine !
    Help, please!

    Just read this:
In UK, the same lead is used for electric kettles.
That's actually false, and if used the other way around actually dangerous.
    First some terminology:
C13: the (male) connector on the cable side of a computer power cable
C14: the (female) connector on your computer
C15: the (male) connector on the cable for your water kettle
C16: the (female) connector on your water kettle
The relevant standard is IEC 60320.
I have to to warn against trying to use a C13 cable in a C16 socket. The C13 cable is NOT resistant the the high temperatures these devices use. The C16 socket prevents the C13 plug from being inserted in normal use, but some "clever" - not so clever if it goes wrong - modification might allow it in and might well cause serious problems such as a connector melting and shorting out as a result.
Using the C15 cable in a C14 equipped device is safe, no worries. Just don't use the computer cable for your water kettle.

  • IMac power cord

I have an iMac I bought in Asia and it has 3 prongs. I brought it here with me when I moved to the US and have been using a plug adapter. It works perfectly fine, no problems at all.
My question is, is it possible to change the power cord with a US one - one that only has 2 prongs?
    I have a 21.5" iMac, mid-2010
    3.06GHz, Intel Core i3

Yes, you can. Go to any hardware store and see if you can find one. Modern requirement is a 3-prong plug. There are adapters to use with 2-prong outlets that provide a grounding wire for safety.

  • Anyone know where I can buy the power cord for intel imac

i lost the power wire to my imac and i don't know  where to buy it
anyone know where can I get it  and how much it costs?

Newer iMacs use ordinary computer power cords commonly used on all sorts of electronic equipment.
The power cord used on G5 iMacs (I think) is different but is also readily available. Either one will cost you less than $10.

  • Where can I find a power cord for a 2001 "Flower Power" iMac?

I have a 2001 "Flower Power" iMac. I am trying to find a power cord so that I can determine if this computer still works. I haven't been able to locate a source for this 12 year old item.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you.

I can't find a good picture of the power socket on the Flower Power iMac, but my Graphite iMac definitely uses the C13 cord John speaks of (we ususally just call these cords "standard business machine power cords..." i.e. http://www.kordking.com/products/power-cords/business-machine.php ).  They can be found mating and reproducing in dark closets and drawers.  I have so many that I regularly throw them away.

  • Where can i buy a Power cord for my iMac in Perú?

I need it to turn on my iMac.
    I live now in Perú.

You might be able to find a power cord with the correct plug for Peru in the Apple Store covering that area of the world.
However you do not need to get a new power cord you can get a plug adapter to go from the plug that is on the cord to the receptacle in the wall. Any good electronics store or even a store that handles items for travelers should have one.
Note you do not need any sort of power  or electrical converter you only need to change the shape of the plug. The power supply in the Mac is universal.

  • Place to purchase 2cd power cord for iSight iMac?

Anyone know where I can buy a second power cord for a 17" iSight iMac? I've been searching the web but no luck yet.
Why would I need one? My new iSight iMac is going to live in a computer cabinet in front of a difficult to access wall outlet/power strip. I'd like to be able to move the computer around the house to watch DVDs in comfort (hurray for Front Row!), and a second power cord will make this transition a lot easier.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

How fussed are you about aesthetics? Have a dead electric jug or kettle or stereo amp at home? See if the cord fits.
    Cheers

  • 27" iMac power cord vs 20" power cord???

Will it matter if I use my old 20" iMac power cord for my new 27" iMac? I think they are the same but wanted to check first.
Reason why I'm asking is because my new 27" iMac i7 randomly shuts down with no warning. I searched and found out that this has happened to others as well. Supposedly resetting the SMC will help but it did not for me. Last time it did it I heard a faint click right before it shut down, first three times it did not do that. I've lost hours of work and am really ticked off. I have a new machine on the way and hope its an isolated problem. I'm running latest OSX with all updates.

Won't matter a bit. There is absolutely nothing special about those cables except the little bit of plastic that makes it sit flush with the rest of the case when plugged in. You could steal an AC cable from an old PC if you wanted, wouldn't make a bit of difference.

  • Replacement imac power cord

Is any imac power cord compatible for replacement? As long as the plugs match ther receptacles on each end, there is no transformer and voltage to worry about, I think any cord will work as replacement.  I couldnt find one on Apple store but there are several on amazon or ebay, thanks

Yes as long as the plug ends match and the wire is the proper guage it's fine. A Google search turned up lots of them.
