IMac acting up

Hi there! I have a 2010 iMac with Snow Leopard and while I was surfing the web today (on firefox, which sometimes gives me trouble anway) and a black screen scrolled down and told me I needed to power off my computer. This is the report I got when I rebooted.
I've also had a error message lately about a system extension that can't be used called "/system/library/extensions/appleusbethernethost.kext" saying it was improperly installed and can't be used.
And in photoshop, recently I've been getting this one about the display driver saying it's disabled GPU enhancements and wants me to check the video card's manufacturer for an update.
I hope my iMac isn't just dying.

Depends which iMac exactly and your network setup, you can go into System Preferences and under the Sharing pane you can enable internet sharing from ethernet (or whereever you get your internet from) to Wi-Fi.

  • IMac acting up in a variety of ways

    Hi all,
my iMac (the latest 27inch model) at work (I work in the post production department of a video production company) has started acting up in a variety ways lately for no apparent reason. I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to do, but here are some of the symptoms the computer is going through:
    - Video uploads to Vimeo and YouTube fail on multiple browsers (normally I wouldn't attribute this problem to my iMac, but other computers in our office on the same network don't have this problem, so it's not our network or the video sites' fault)
    - When trying to back to an external hard drive, I get this error on random files:
    http://www.macyourself.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/010710-findererrorcode36.j pg
    - I get a similar error when trying to burn data DVDs where a seemingly random file will cause the burn to fail
    - When compressing video files through compressor, random files fail
    - Again, random files will fail when transferring to our server
    - I moved a video project (source video files, FCP project files, etc) onto my iMac to work on it - Working on the project in FCP was extremely slow with random crashing. Exports failed each time. When I tried working on the project directly from the original hard drive however, everything worked smoothly
    - Video encodes from Compressor seem to become randomly corrupt, and result in some of the above behaviour with said files
    - The computer is slower in general (Finder, Safari, etc) and tends to hang more
I hooked up my iMac to another Mac in the office and verified (there were a few errors found) and repaired the disk through Disk Utility. After that I verified it again and no errors were found; it said the disk was healthy.
I've been a Mac user for a number of years and have never come across these kinds of problems before. I treat my computers very well and while I run them hard (a lot of video encoding), I keep them healthy and organized.
I realize this is a lot of vague info (please let me know if I can provide any clarification), but I would greatly appreciate any insight anyone would have on this issue.
    Thanks!
    Jordan

It sounds like a hard drive problem. Modern hard drives aren't like the old hard drives. They shouldn't ever get corrupt. Plus, a modern OS shouldn't allow that corruption to occur either. The fact that you are still getting file system corruption and flaky behavior indicates that you may have a bad hard drive. If Apple will replace it and you want to drag it down there, that would be the best option. A better Disk Repair utility like Disk Warrior might help too. Ordinarily I would just recommend avoiding any chances and swapping out the hard drive. That is good advice for a Macbook but much harder to do on an iMac.

  • IMac acting like space bar being held down

My iMac is acting like the space bar is being held down, even when keyboard and mouse are disconnected. How do I fix this problem?

Well, some info, maybe more than you nedd, but...
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • IMac acting strange... restarts randomly, difficult to start...

My iMac has been acting very weird lately.
It started with random restarts when I was not even standing by the computer. It has been freezing frequently also.
Lately it has restarted and I heard the initial start up noise for a quick second and than it restarted again. This happened about 20 times before the computer actually booted.
If anyone else is having these problems please let me know. I have no idea whats going on :S

    Hello Philip
Reset your iMac's SMC (System Management Controller) exactly as described in the "how to" link below.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446-en
Then if you are still have a power issue, you should take it in for service.

  • Imac acting really wierd!

I'm back for more advice. Just when I thought I had the silly thing fixed after the "sleep" issue after doing the update... Now something really weird is going on. Sunday night, our power went out for a max of 2 seconds. The computer and everything with it is on a surge protector. iMac was asleep at the time. When we went to wake it up yesterday, it wouldn't wake up! We held the power button and finally it came on, but it was running incredibly slow. We tried to get online, but iMac said that we didn't have an internet connection. We have DSL. I tried everything on the silly machine and nothing would work. It wouldn't let me put it to sleep, shut down, change users (so I could run my "test" account). All I ever got was the dreaded bouncing beach ball. To make a long story short, I decided my only option after trying disk repairs, etc.. was to an "archive and install". I did that and the darn computer still was doing the same exact thing!! I couldn't put it to sleep, shut it down, switch users, anything! I couldn't even pull up my system information so I could call Apple!
Today, I drug my iMac to work with me, thinking that I could call Apple and have the mac right here and still use my PC work computer. I turned on my mac and low and behold, it works perfectly! It's like yesterday never happened! It goes to sleep, wakes up, shuts down, does all of the tests (which were negative). What gives??
My questions are: What could have happened? Could my power strip be bad, but not bad enough to completely quit working? Could my DSL modem be acting up and making my mac act crazy? I thought that when I get home from work today, I will plug the mac into a seperate outlet and then re-set the modem. I will then hook the modem into my airport express and see what happens. What do you think? Thank you!!

    Hi nuttysami123,
You probably did a variation of the SMU reset, check out the link...
I had my power go out last night briefly and could not reconnect to the internet. What happened was I had changed the "master" password on my account, when power and DSL came back on, the DSL account did not recognize the username with my new password. I had to reset DSL router to recognize my new password and like your magical Mac, my internet connection came back... Rick

my imac g5 is acting funny...when i wake it from a sleep it freezes, mouse and all...after a restart the screen gets scrambled with lines..then i have to shut down and restart all over again...sometimes it's o.k.sometimes it does nothing or ..but sometimes when i go to open ,say safari or mail program it freezes again! I ran a diagnostic and it said it was o.k...so ..I dont know WHAT to think...Zap the PRAM?

  • Imac acting weird slow

recently my imac has been acting slow.  I took it to apple, and they did not find any hardware issues, but did see the same issues I have been having -
    app icons not shoeing up.
    Apps freezing
    Apps not responding
Backup discs not showing up on screen.
Many many permission errors on my main HDD.
They ended up keeping my imac and resetting it.  Reloading OSX Maverick, and sending me home to reload all of my stuff.
I did not restore from backup as I feared loading the same issue back on it.  Instead I reloaded all my software new from disc, drag and dropped all my photos back into iphoto (25,000) ... and so on and so forth.
Now, a month later, Im having similar issues again.
I am so bummed.  I had an older intel imac and never had any of these issues... now i have a newer 2.7 i5, 8GB Ram, 1TB HDD... and it should be better faster and stronger... but here I am.
I am an apple diehard, and wont give up, but I need help.
    HELP....
    Mike  -  Prostreetmike

First, back up all data immediately unless you already have a current backup. If you can't back up, stop here. Do not take any of the steps below.
    Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}' | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
Run Software Update. If there's a firmware update, install it.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the View menu or the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for User, System, and Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the Memory tab. What value is shown in the bottom part of the window for Swap used?
Next, select the Disk tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in andWrites out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Help! iTunes is making my iMac act like a Windows machine!

    Here is the basic problem:
Some songs will not play properly in iTunes, pausing often and causing the spinning beach ball of death to freeze my iMac for 5 to 10 minutes at a time, sometimes longer. I am also having problems ripping those songs to a CD.
I am trying to decide if I should uninstall iTunes or simply back everything up and do a clean install of Snow Leopard and iTunes.
I’m also wondering if simply getting more RAM would solve my woes. I have 2GB, which worked well for years. I have 4GB coming in the mail.
I have a 2008 iMac. It has about 175GB of free space on its hard drive, about 144 GB in use. With iTunes playing a file and nothing of particular note open, it has just under 1GB of free system memory, or RAM. I have both the latest version of Snow Leopard and iTunes installed. All software is up to date. Except, of course, that I'm not running Lion.
I have a 45GB in music and 54GB in podcasts in my iTunes library.
I have corrected my hard drive’s permissions repeatedly but am unaware of any other maintenance I should be doing on my hard drive.
Here are some observations that may or may not be helpful:
Songs in the same folder are behaving differently, some consistently playing without a problem, others consistently spinning the beach ball.  For example, five songs off an album will freeze up my iMac but the album’s other songs do not.
I can, however, duplicate the symptoms with otherwise dependable songs by having more applications open. Nothing major, say Safari, Finder and iTunes. What I don’t get is why some songs would play well and others not when only iTunes is open.
Having a handful of applications open now sometimes prompts the spinning beach ball of death. This never used to happen, hence the RAM coming in the mail.
When I check information on the malfunctioning music files, it shows they contain data, but I start getting the beach ball checking  the file’s “sharing & permissions” status in "Get Info."
Interestingly, I recently had to stop backing up my podcasts in Time Machine because some of them were crashing it. My music files, however, have been backing up fine in Time Machine, so far.
Also, when I try to copy my music files onto an external drive or my desk top – in anticipation of reinstalling iTunes -- my iMac cites error 36 and stops the process.
My iMac’s performace problems started to occur before I finally updated to Snow Leopard a few months ago. Indeed, I thought updating would solve them.
I had been regularly updating iTunes, however, I recall reading somewhere that upgrading to Snow Leopard while having an up-to-date iTunes installed might cause problems.
There you have it. Any advice or insights would he most welcome.

Well, I seem to have solved my own problem. Do I get 10 points, I wonder? It appears that my poor iMac was in desperate need of a masssive cleaning. Thanks to other posts here and elsewhere, I found out about Cocktail, a free download -- unless you chip in for the more advanced version. This is a powerful and easy to understand tool. I used it to perk my iMac up to a level I have not seen in a LONG time. The spinning beach ball of death must go play elsewhere.  Among other things, I cleared out all my caches, eliminated a ton of foreign languages and did several repairs, including tracking down and killing a corrupted permission. It also taught me how to tap into my computer's activity logs and gave me other useful insights. GOOD stuff. I did other things not related to Cocktail to free up processing power -- such as turning off file- size view option in Finder -- but Cocktail is what solved this problem. As I type this, I am happily listening to songs that earlier would not play. What a relief. I am now especially looking forward to that new RAM. We'll be blazing fast then, by gum.

  • Why are windows and desktop on iMac acting wonky?

t's raining out and that may or may not have something to do with the fact that for the first time (after 20 years of owning a Mac), the Document window and Mail window (both which were open at the same time) were doing a jig, moving too the right a little ways, then back again. It made it impossible to delete or move emails. The windows did this completely on their own. This is quite disconcerting.
And, on the same subject, perhaps, for the last few weeks, at times my mouse (corded) is acting as if I'm clicking on the left-hand side so all open windows become small and I have to click on a window to continue working on my document. It does this on its own without me necessarily using the mouse.
And last, but not least, earlier this morning I went to turn off the computer and was about to click on the dialogue box that asks if I want to turn off the computer now or wait 58 seconds, when the desktop turned black, then back to normal, then black and it didn't allow me to click on the blue box. This black and normal switch went on for a minute or two, then the computer turned itself off.

I can't open them without buying software when the same emails on my iPhone have the attachment as a PDF and open?  Thanks
Acrobat PDF files open with Preview which is already installed on the Mac.

Welcome to Discussions - have you tried booting from your install disc and using Disk Utility?
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk
Then, boot back to your internal drive and try to repair permissions.
    Please post back with results.

  • IMac acting strange now won't start only 3 months old

This has just happened. Whilst doing some encoding a message suddenly appeared saying I had to restart. Everything had sort of froze. So I restart and get to the apple logo but then a grey screen comes down saying restart again and big lines of code appear.
Straight away booked in for genius appointment but that's not till wednesday. Anyone know what's happened?it's a 24" iMac. 4 g ram. Only 4 months old.
Before this I've noticed other little things like apps not responding and the famous beachball. Not to good for a £1200 mac!!!

    Anyone know what's happened?
There would be no way anyone here would know.
Not to good for a £1200 mac!!!
Technology is far from perfect. Then take it in for warranty repair.

  • IMac acting erratically

My iMac is early 2008 and up to date with all the latest software & firmware other than mountain Lion. It has always been reliable and I treat it with respect, until lately when whatever application or window I had open would suddenly freeze with everything becoming tinged in pink. I couldn't close or force close anything so the only solution was to reboot when I would get a half hour or so use before it happened again. It became very difficult to start up and proceed to the desk top and now will not get past the initial grey screen with the rotating cog, which when it stops does will not open the next blank screen before continuing to the desk top, but I can hear my log in items opening up as usual and the fan comes on OK. When the problems first started I ran the usual checks though Disk Utility and also the Hardware check and everything was passed in good working order. I have attempted booting from the install disk and my Time Machine external hard drive and various other forced boot ups, but nothing helps. If I do manage to get to the desk top I will probably do a complete reinstall erasing the hard drive. I'm using my old iBook for now but would like to get the iMac working again. Thanks for any advice.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to bare metal from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
If you want to preserve the data on the internal drive(s), you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to fully boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup) or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
How to back up and restore your files
    2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
