IMac Air High CPU Usage while Idle / Kernel Issues

I am attempting to repair an MacBook Air that a customer spilled a small amount of orange juice into. I have completely taken the unit apart and thoroughly cleaned the motherboard and all components. There doesn't appear to be any physical damage done from the liquid. The problem is that the customer claims that since the spill happened the computer runs "very slow" and the CPU usage is very high even while completely idle (Bounces between 60%-80%). Being versed primarily in Windows PC Repair I am looking to post some diagnostic logs on here and maybe get some help from someone who knows what they are looking at. The customer took the machine to the Apple Store and they told them it had a "kernel problem" and would need a new Logic Board. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I just need to know what diagnostic reports I need to post to get this ball rolling... Thank you for your time.

Skype 4.2.0.11 has abnormally high CPU usage while idle.
I can't get my laptop under 70 degrees celsius unless I cpulimit or quit skype, and cpulimiting it actually makes it completely unresponsive, as if some other thread is constantly generating a lot of work and taking priority over the UI thread.
What the heck is skype doing? (And why do any of its threads need nice -10?) It takes up more CPU time than pulseaudio, truecrypt, and deluged combined.
Its CPU usage is constantly between 5 and 50 percent*, it's absolutely horrible.
*While idle. I'm unable to make calls.
I know this is expected from a linux user, but for all I know, Skype is malware. It's not open-source, so I can't find out for myself, and there are no open-source alternatives so the frankly shameful amount of bugs I encounter in Skype will never be fixed.
There are several bugs I'd love to be fixed in Skype, but first, PLEASE, optimize your code. It's absolutely horriffic at the moment.Attached are statistics from my desktop over approximately a 24 hour period for the processes shown (other than firefox and adb).
Pulseaudio tops skype this time but that's because I've had music playing through mpd for a few hours. Skype uses more than 16 times the CPU that pidgin does, and almost double the RAM! RAM isn't shown in the screenshot but take my word for it. Bear in mind that I haven't taken (or made) any calls in this period of time, and pidgin has been signed into three different services and using encrypted chat.
I really wish that at least the protocol would be documented so someone could work around this, at the moment I don't think the guys writing skype realize just how unstable the linux port is. At least it's better than the Android port.
[Edit for those unfamiliar with linux processes: "TIME" is the cumulative time that the program has been scheduled for on any core, effectively making it a measure of total CPU usage for a given time period]

High cpu usage when idle / x230
Hi all,
I have an i5 x230, win8 pro installed on a crucial m4 msata ssd, 16gb of ram. I lately noticed a sharp drop in battery life. I believe this is due by high cpu utilization when idle, which I see from task manager, and shows the System process hovering above 30% cpu utilization. This goes down when I restart, but comes up again after a while, possibly when coming back from sleep.
Does anyone have any idea about this? I tried to search the knowledge base a bit, but nothing came up.

Go to Solution.Indeed it was risdxc64.sys; I used process explorer to find out. I uninstalled the win 8 driver, and installed back the win 7 driver, and CPU usage is normalized.

Long story short, each video packet has to be passed from the browser to a medium-integrity broker process, then to the low-integrity flash player process for rendering. If an attacker manages to hijack the Flash Player thread, the process is low-integrity, which prevents the attacker from doing much with it. While it's not an absolute guarantee (nothing in security is), it raises the bar significantly for attackers.
The downside is that all of that extra message-passing consumes CPU cycles, especially if you're trying to fill an exceptionally large buffer as fast as possible. There's not a lot of opportunity to optimize this.
If you're fine with the risk, you can manually disable ProtectedMode on your machine. If you're only dealing with trusted sites, and you're not doing anything critical with the machine (work, banking, etc), then it's probably not a huge deal.
Ultimately, ProtectedMode is like a vaccine -- it's a herd-immunity thing. If the majority of people run it, exploits targeting machines without it are inconsistent and probably not worth pursuing when you look at the effort involved in developing an end-to-end exploit. If a large number of people disable it, it becomes economically attractive for people building botnets, and you'll have a problem if you're not using it.
To disable Protected Mode, add the following line to your mms.cfg file located in:
Windows 32bit: C:\windows\system32\macromed\flash
Windows 64bit: C:\windows\syswow64\macromed\flash
ProtectedMode=0
If the mms.cfg file does not exist, create one using any standard text editor (e.g.. notepad)
Depending on your operating system, you might need to first save the mms.cfg file to a writable location (such as your documents or desktop folder) and then copy the file into the destination folder using Windows Explorer.
To re-enable Protected Mode, simply remove the line from the mms.cfg file. -
Continual HD activity, high CPU usage when idle
I got my first notebook, a Compaq V2000, a few weeks ago and have Arch set up pretty well on it but I have a few issues. Even when the machine is sitting idle it sounds like the HD is doing a read (or whatever) about every 5 seconds. This only starts after I log into Gnome and stops if I log out.
I tried a couple of things with hdparm:
If I try 'hdparm -y /dev/hda' the drive goes to standby but immediately spins up again.
'hdparm -B 255 /dev/hda' disables APM and stops the cyclic behavior. This would seem to be good but during the 5 second cycle the drive alternates between quiet and noisy and this leaves it in the noisy state.
I tried to determine what might be causing all this disk activity so I edited lilo.conf to remove "acpi=on apm=off" from the "append=" line and in rc.conf I put a ! in front of all modules and daemons and rebooted. I removed the applets from task bar. No change.
I ran top to see if I could tell what was accessing the HD but I'm not knowledgable enough to make much sense of it. I did notice that on my notebook the top summary shows:
CPU: ~30% user, ~10% system, ~60% idle with 'wait' bouncing between 0 and 5%
On my main computer, also running Arch/Gnome, I get
CPU: ~2% user, ~1% system, ~97% idle with 'wait' solid at 0%
On the notebook, if I run hdparm -B 255 /dev/hda the CPU #'s for user and system remain high but the wait # drops to zero and stays there.
I don't think all this HD activity could be good for my machine, and I know I find it very annoying. If anyone could help me stop all the HD accesses and understand the high CPU usage I would appreciate it.I loaded lsof and frankly it scared me. It listed what looked like a couple hundred files and I didn't know exactly how to use that information.
Then I tried laptop-mode-tools. The man pages didn't sound too promising since it uses, among other things, hdparm, which I already tried with mixed results. I gave it a try anyway and right out of the box, with no configuration, it worked. HD access when idle dropped to essentially none, the drive spins down and the cooling fan runs much less frequently.
So far all I have changed in the config file are the HD idle timeouts. The default of 5 seconds was starting and stopping the HD too often so I changed that to 20 seconds for now.
Whatever laptop-mode did to stop the 5-second HD accesses the effect persists even if I run 'laptop_mode stop' and '/etc/rc.d/laptop-mode stop'. When I get the time I should be able to use 'laptop_mode status' and laptop-mode.conf settings to determine exactly what the magic bullet was.

High CPU usage while display is asleep
This is a strange one, and I've noticed it on multiple distros, and Arch is no different. When my system is sitting idle with the screen on my CPU usage hovers around 5%, which I would consider to be perfectly normal. However, when the display goes to sleep (no screen saver, just DPMS sleep) the CPU jumps up to about 25% and stays there until I bump the mouse (or do whatever to wake the system up), and then it will drop back down to the normal 5% CPU usage.
I had always thought it had something to do with Firefox, but I had Firefox closed while I was away at work today, and yet when I come home and wake my computer up my CPU usage graph shows that it's been at a solid 25% all day long.
Anyone have any ideas what this might be, or recommend a way to hunt down exactly what process is eating my CPU cycles while the display is off?

EDIT: I should add that I am running KDE, and have been on the other distros as well (to the best of my recollection). After realizing this it seems like this thread may be better suited for the Applications & DE forum, but I'm not sure... it could very well be something to do with the kernel or something to do with power saving. Please move if you see fit.

The script doesn't seem to find anything either. High idle CPU usage kicks in maybe 3/4 of the way through, but the output doesn't seem to change from the beginning at all.

Also, the screen doesn't have to be asleep, the system just needs to sit idle for a few minutes.

High CPU usage on idle server.
Hi
I have a problem with a weblogic server 5.1 SP#6 running with JDK1.2.2 on a Solaris Sparc server.
The server starts using about 80-90 % of the cpu after about 2 hours (even if it is idle). After two
days the server hungs completely and needs to be restarted.
During this time the server gets longer and longer response time.
At the bottom of this post, i added a thread dump when the server had about 85% CPU usage and low
usage.
Gratefull for any help.

I have been using a ThinkPad Z60t, running the OS WinXP Pro that came bundled with the Thinkvantage Software. I have had no problems with my computer for the two years I have been using it. I use it as much if not more then a traditional desktop, covering all aspects of my life, from business to gaming (although it is not a gaming comp, it does me fine). Recently, within the last week or so, I noticed a huge lag-like spike every minute or less, including when the system is idle and isn't playing anything. I ran McAfee as well as AdAware and found no issues out of the ordinary. After reading a few forumn posts, on other websites, I ran a processes check, with Microsoft based software "Sysinternals" and found that over 50-80% of my processor was being used by Deffered Procedure Calls (DPC's) and Hardware interrupts. I chose to reinitialize my entire system, back to factory settings, wiped it all. Guess what it is still doing it!!!!
I have completely updated my OS, and other forumns suggest that there is a hardware issue, or intermittent signal with the CPU or Motherboard, what can I do to test this theory or to find solutions, please help me!!!!!ron App wrote:

Just returned from the shop, wanted to buy 27" iMac. 3.06GHz model was running Parallels with Vista, processor usage continuously like 3-5%. iMac was cooking - if I put my face 0.5m from the screen, I could feel the heat!
I don't know about iTunes... some of the recent Mac apps (Safari, iTunes) are so slow/inefficient I stay away from them. However, Logic's CPU use when idle is completely normal for a "real time" application that starts approx 20 threads minimum. All DAW application do this to some extent, some more than Logic.
What's not normal is how much heat the new Macbook, MBP and iMacs are generating, the folks over on the Macbook forums are starting to see heat related failures.
As a side note, Windows 7 is much more efficient than Windows XP_Professional, that's saying something as XP is a good real time DAW OS. After Vista I didn't expect much but Win_7 is a nice OS.

High CPU usage while running a java program
Hi All,
Need some input regarding one issue I am facing.
I have written a simple JAVA program that lists down all the files and directories under one root directory and then copies/replicates them to another location. I am using java.nio package for copying the files. When I am running the program, everything is working fine. But the process is eating up all the memories and the CPU usage is reaching upto 95-100%. So the whole system is getting slowed down.
Is there any way I can control the CPU usage? I want this program to run silently without affecting the system or its performance.Hi,

but now, when i use rekonq (also tested arora; same issue), cpu usage for the browser shoots up to nearly 50% and stays there. also, pages don't load unless i move my mouse around. flash is worse as well.
(note: after my upgrade, i got a black screen on booting up. i had to use the 'nomodeset' option to disable kms. this probably isn't related, but i thought it might be worth mentioning.)
any ideas?

EA3: Performance (High CPU usage while editting PACKAGE BODYs)
EA3 seems to use a lot of processor time while editting PACKAGE BODYs. I created a simple test that repeatably (on my system) causes the EA3 to use over 90% CPU for about a minute. (Last test was 74 seconds.)

Another test is just to hold down the Enter key. After a few seconds, it reached 99% CPU and mostly stays there while holding the key.Thanks, the developers are looking into this.

High CPU Usage while getting input from JTextArea
I have a core class (emulator) that can receive and handle command strings of varying sorts. I have an Interface that, when implemented, can be used to work with this emulator.
I have code that works, but the CPU is pegged. The emulator has its own thread, and my GUI, which implements the aforementioned Interface and extends JFrame, clearly has its own as well.
So, the emulator calls the gatherResponse(prompt) method of the interface driving it, in order to find out the next command :

Adobe CEF Helper high CPU usage whilst idle. No CC apps open... HELP
I have a 2015 Macbook Pro Retina 13", i7,16GB - and I've noticed Adobe CEF Helper is using 13-18% CPU whilst no CC apps are open.
I have signed out, quit and relaunched Adobe CC app and signed back in. This temporarily fixed the problem and lower the usage to 0.1% (yesterday) today the problem has returned.
AND I haven't even used any CC apps today.
Why is this happening? Is there a permanent fix.

P.S - I have all the latest updates installed.Iv'e been noticing this as well. I have Photoshop installed on my Windows and Mac computer. This is pissing me off and for this reason i'm canceling my subscription.
I'm sorry but I write software and no way in hell should a background process be utilizing 5% of my modern CPU. I only use Photoshop for basic stuff, not worth this crap. Iv'e been slowly uninstalling all Adobe products off my computer as they are major bloat ware and slow down your computer even when you don't use them. I'll stick to Win8 or Chrome PDF reader, Gimp, Paint.NET ect or other Open Source software that don't do this simple stuff I need. -
High cpu usage while inserting
i've 10g database running on sun machine
insert into id_air_e (aire_key, aire_0) values (:b0,:b1) taking too much time, it has fk on aire_key column reference to other table
this Insert script inserts into the primary table & this table but it takes lots of CPU when inserting in secondary table
Please advice how to speed up the insertion.Hi Buddy,
In order to help you better, some questions need to be answered first.
1) How many rows are been inserted?
2) Is there any trigger enabled on this tables?
3) Is the secondary table local or remote (using db_links)?
4) Is there any index on the secondary table?
5) Which wait event the session running the insert statement is waiting for? select event from v$session where SID = <sid inserting rows>;

It becomes slower than a 1 gig machine. This happens every now and then with my new unit. Slows everything down. :(

Please help.Well, not exactly sure but kinda. This is what happened. Board was replaced with bios version 1.5. Worked fine for 3 days then the mystery 50% usage came back. They then replaced the memory with ddr400 from ddr333. It's been over a week now and the problem has not returned.
So there are 3 probable culprits at one point or another. The board, the bios and the memory. Personally, I find it very odd that memory was a factor. It seems that bios 1.5 is not at all happy with ddr333. :(
