IMac - Airport (Ethernet) to use Internet hosted by Linksys WRT54G

Is this scenario possible.
iMac G4 hardwired via Ethernet to Airport Base Station
DSL Internet fed through Linksys WRT54G
My iMac is not Airport enabled so can I use the base station to somehow connect to and utilize the Wireless Internet Connection available from the Linksys router.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
G4 iMac 800   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

If your AirPort Base Station was an Extreme or Express, it would be possible to link them to a Linksys WRT54G wireless router as you wish to do. However, since you are posting in this forum, I assume you have a Snow or Graphite ABS, neither of which can make the connection to another router wirelessly.

  • Can I connect my iBook via Airport/Ethernet to share internet?

I have a G5 iSight connected via Airport to the internet. I want to connect my G3 iBook via Ethernet to the G5 and connect to the web. When I opened Sharing on the G5 and started sharing my connection, it warned me that doing so might cause problems. And it was right. I lost the internet connection to the G5 and had to reboot the modem.
Before I rebooted, I opened up Network on the iBook and saw that Ethernet had an active internet address of something like 196.168.... with a "3" on the end -- the same sort of number as my G5 is assigned except that it has a "1" on the end (I think).
Is it possible to share my G5's internet connection with my iBook? How?

Thanks for the response, Camelot. It is still no go. This is what I did. For the G5:
    1. +Network > Airport+ (under TCP/IP) gives the IP address as 192.168.1.1, and the router as 192.168.1.254.
    2. In +Network > Built in Ethernet > TCP/IP+ I selected manually (for configure IPv4), then typed in 10.0.0.1 and the sub mask you suggested. The router I left blank.
    3. I applied the above.
    4. Under Sharing, I selected +Share your connection from: Airport+; +To computers using: built in Ethernet+.
    5. When I selected Start I got the warning: +If your computer is connected to a network, turning on Internet sharing may affect the network settings of other computers and disrupt the network. Contact your system administrator before turning on Internet sharing.+
    6. I booted the iBook (OSX 10.3.9) and opened Network preferences to see what happened when I connected the Ethernet cable. Under +Network Status+ I saw Ethernet come up with a yellow button (and a message), and then a green button with the message: +Ethernet is currently active and has the IP address 192.168.2.3. You are connected to the internet via built in Ethernet.+
    7. When I checked +Built in Ethernet > TCP/IP+ on the iBook it was set to DHCP.
    8. The iBook would not connect to the internet, but the G5 would. At least that's an improvement.
Seems a curly one to me.

  • Can no longer connect to internet wirelessly with Linksys WRT54G...

    Hi, all...
I'm at my father-in-law's house. His home network setup is as follows:
    * Compaq desktop connected via Ethernet cable to
    * Linksys WRT54G, v3 (IP 192.168.2.1) connected via Ethernet cable to
    * Westell DSL modem provided by SouthEast Telephone (his ISP - IP 192.168.1.1)
I set this equipment up for him about 18 months ago. His Compaq desktop connects perfectly to the internet, using the setup I described above, which I set up for him about 18 months ago. I *used* to be able to connect to the internet wirelessly (with both my IBM ThinkPad and my MacBook; my bro-in-law *used* to be able to connect to the internet wireless (with his Dell laptop).
For reasons we don't yet understand, neither of us can connect wirelessly to the internet any longer. I have called Linksys, posted to their board, and read other threads here, so I am aware that MacBooks have some issues with Linksys routers. I'm getting ready to phone my father-in-law's ISP, to see if they can help.
But... I don't understand why this used to work, but doesn't any longer. I would be very grateful for any help any of you great folks could provide, and I will gladly post here any detailed info on the setup that might be of help!
    Many thanks,
    Bill J.

    Thanks for your reply.
Actually the Linksys 2Wire modem works fine in OSX and when connecting via a Compaq PC I also have in the house. It is just on the MacBook running XP that it fails to "connect". XP see's the network but cannot connect.
Also, I downloaded again bootcamp and created a fresh driver CD, reinstalled the driver and received the same error: 1706 No valid source could be found for product Macintoish Drivers foir Windows XP.msi.
I looked at the directory on the CD and it appears that there are no driver files, only documentation.
I called Apple, got no help, called Microsoft, spent 1.5 hours talking to them
    they were no help either.
I sent a messge to the bootcamp beta mail address informing them that it seems the drivers are not being downloaded with bootcamp.
    Thx again.

  • Setting up IMac over Ethernet to use IPhone via WIFI

I have just stopped using a wireless router via Airport. I now use the Homeplug AV adapter system via Ethernet. I have internet no problem, but now have no network that will enable me to connect my IPhone via WIF to the internet through my IMac. Can someone please help?

Duane, not being a dumb taquito, I try not to post something of which I know nothing about. However, that still manages to occur occasionally! When the OP asked for help, I knew nothing about his issue. I had never shared an internet connection wirelessly. But in my mind I thought that this indeed should be possible with a Mac with an AirPort card. I experimented.
Not having an iPhone or an iPod Touch I used my iMac and my Mac mini. They are in rooms on opposite ends of my apartment. I set up a wireless airport network from my Mac mini to share its ethernet internet connection wirelessly with the iMac. I did it exactly as I shared with the OP. It took all of 3 minutes, start to finish. Then I walked to the other end of the apartment and connected the iMac to this wireless network and was surfing the internet from the Mac mini's ethernet connection in all of 30 seconds. It was a secure wireless connection.
I have now followed your instructions. They also worked flawlessly and because they were now familiar steps took barely two minutes to set up, walk, connect and surf. The results are identical!
However, if the OP only had your instructions to follow and did not encounter an AirPort service in Sys Prefs>Sharing, they would have been up the proverbial +cala de la mierda+, without a paddle.

  • Problem with Airport/Ethernet and Sharing Internet connection

I'm receiving my internet service through a wirless router. I am connected to it through Airport on my Mini. I am also connected to a dt G4 through a wired router (the G4 doesn't have airport). I want to share my connection from airport to the G4 on built in ethernet. On the mini I have internet sharing enabled (from airport to ethernet). I still cannot connect on the G4. Any ideas (should I disable dhcp on the router - tried that and it didn't work)?
10.4.8 on the Mini and 10.3.9 on the G4

    Hi Jacob. Interesting setup.
    1) If all the computers connect properly to the router, whether wired or wireless, why are you trying the internet sharing?
    2) You mention a "dt g4" and an "MDD g4". I'm not a mac guy....are these different computers?
    And.
Your mini's on wireless router. OK.
Your "dt g4" is on wired router...Same router?
If it's the same router, your network is something like this:
    Internet
    |
    Router
    | | |
    #1 #2 3?
    is that close?
If so, then you really don't need internet sharing.
Everone's "on", and if sharing is properly setup, all machines should "see" each other.

  • Using WPA/TKIP with Linksys WRT54G

I cannot connect my R61i using WPA...it gets through everything except the last step, "waiting for IP configuration".
I can connect my older laptop to the same router using the same security, the Lenovo just doesn't work.  I downloaded everything I could find remotely associated with this from the Lenovo page.
Does this Lenovo not operate under WPA/TKP or am I doing something dumb???
    Any help would be appreciated.
    thanks, donnyboy

assuming that the WRT54G and Intel WiFi adapter have been updated with the latest firmware and driver, respectively... i would then configure both the WRT54G and TPR61i for WPA2 Personal + AES encryption (but disable TKIP).  and as carbon_unit advised, uninstall thinkvantage access connections, as TVAC is not necessary, and can conflict with Windows' native ability to manage the connections, ime.
i've found that installing Intel ProSet for WiFi (which also includes the wireless adapter drivers), can be helpful; it provides a few more options to fine tune the wireless adapter settings.
and beyond the scope of your question... you might also take a look at 3rd party router firmware, like Tomato or DD-WRT, both of which provide more robust & reliable performance than linksys' stock firmware.  it's a straightforward procedure, but be careful to choose the correct firmware for your particular WRT54G (version).
for optimal performance & reliablity, i'd also configure the router and wireless clients for 802.11g only (disable 802.11a/b)

  • WRT54G - Cannot access internet but iMac airport says internet connection is fine... what's wrong?

I use a WRT54G wireless router connected to Mac. All of a sudden, I became unable to access certain websites on my iMac, such as Facebook and Apple homepages. But i can access Yahoo website. I tried resetting my linksys setup but it doesnt solve the problem. When i access my iphone via wifi at home, i am also unable to go into app store, facebook app, and emails with images won't load. I also cannot link my iphone to itunes on my iMac. What happens on my computer when I surf the internet is that the page just loads halfway and stop "responding". But my imac airport says that my internet connection is fine, however my access has become very "restricted". Can anyone tell me what's happening and how to resolve it?

To resolve difficulties accessing some websites when connected to a Linksys router you should check the following.
    Checking the router’s security settings
    Checking your computer’s security settings
Security on the web browser is set too high
Configuring the Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) on the router
    Opening ports for secured sites

  • Using ICS from iMac to PC via Airport/Ethernet

I have my iMac networked to my PC and I can see my iMac from my PC and vice versa as well as share iTunes libraries and browse the hard drives of both machines from each machine and transfer files, all works no problems.
Now I want to share the internet connection from my iMac to my PC via the Airport to the PC via Ethernet. I've turned on ICS on the iMac but can't get internet at all on the PC. I have the iMac and the PC linked together via a wired hub.
The PC is setup to use DHCP, any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
    Cheers!
    iMac 20" Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi Bill, thanks for replying.
Yes I do already have a wireless router but I can't get my PC to work via the PCs wireless adaptor to link into the routers wireless connection. I can get the exact same wireless adaptor to work using another computer but my main PC is qwirky! The wireless adaptor on the PC says it has a wireless connection but then I get a symbol come up with a message saying "Data Frame Errors - Check WEP Settings" I've tried turning WEP off but I still can't get the wireless adaptor to give me an internet connection even though it links into the wireless network and says I have a strong signal!
I would plug the PC in via ethernet cable but I have to have the router plugged into the only phone socket that works in my house which is downstairs and the PC is upstairs along with my iMac.
Which leads me back to my alternative option of sharing the internet connection via my iMac. I also still have to phone up tech support (actiontec) for my PCs wireless adaptor but they didn't solve my problems last time, I did by asigning a manual IP address to the wireless adaptor (frustratingly that hasn't worked this time!).
Why can't PCs be as easy to connect and use as Macs?!!
So, any ideas about the ICS on the iMac to the PC?
    Cheers.

I have tried resetting my airport extreme, creating a new network, etc nothing seems to work.

I have a feeling you may be stuck in bridge mode there...
Factory reset the Extreme (so we don't second guess later), and re-set up the extreme using iOS5 on your iPhone.
Set up your Wi-Fi network with your iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, or Mac.

  • Can I use two airports to use internet and listen to itunes in stereo? simultaneously?

Can I use two airports to use internet and listen to itunes in stereo?  I just bought a second airport so I could listen to itunes & Pandora on my stereo.  My problem is that I haven't been able to connect to both airports at once.  I want to listen to the stereo (one airport) while using internet which is connected to a separate airport.  Unfortunately, the stereo and ethernet cables are not close by which is why I bought the second airport.

You can run both simultaneously. You just need to reconfigure the base station that will be used for streaming as a wireless client.
I suggest that you start by performing a "factory default" reset on the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) to get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration. By default, the AXn will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name of something like: Apple Network NNNNNN
After the reset has completed, plug the AXn into power, and then, verify from the iMac that this network shows up in the list of networks under the AirPort icon in the OS X menu bar.
Be sure to first switch the wireless network to the AirPort that will be used for streaming. Note: You will temporarily lose the Internet connection from your "main" AirPort. Then, run the AirPort Utility. The Utility should now find the streaming AXn. If not, use the Utility's "Configure Other" option under the File menu option in the Utility's menu bar. Enter 10.0.1.1 for the Address and "public" for the Password.
AirPort Utility > Select the AXn > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless
Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
    Network Name: <existing "main" AirPort's wireless network>
Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
AirPort Utility > Select the AXn > Manual Setup >Music
    Enable AirPlay (checked)
iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    Verify Password: (optional)
Click Update to write the new settings to the AX

  • Airport iMac G5 Ethernet PS2?

OK I have a Airport Extreme downstairs wirelessly sending internet to my iMac G5 upstairs. I have a PS2 in the same room as my iMac. I want to get the PS2 online so I connected a Cat 6 ethernet cable from the iMac to the PS2. So the internet would go wirelessly to the iMac and then from the iMac to the PS2 via ethernet cable. On the iMac I opened sharing pref. and selected share internet from airport to computers using ethernet. I set up the PS2 and it gets internet. However, when I try to go online with SOCOM 3, I can't get passed the DNAS screen and it times out giving error -612. How can I get past the DNAS screen?

Hmmm... I think before i had my ethernet hub i tried running it with the internet sharing. My issue that I encountered was with my ISP. basically it violated the terms of agreement and they terminated my connection whenever I tried it. Maybe your ISP has the same thing (the most likely do).
If your ISP has that, I can think of two solutions:
    1. Super long ethernet cord
    2. wireless router
i don't know if you have ever seen this, but there are router like devices made for PS2, Xbox etc that are basically just a wireless link system. I think they run about 20 bux because they don't sell all that well.
I honestly have no clue because I tried running the internet sharing a few years ago with a iMac G3. However I am willing to test out the iternet sharing capabilites with my Macbook since I'm running a newer software. I will get back to you soon with this info. I plan on testing connecting to the iMac and then my PS2 (i must dust it off first).

  • Advice? Networking Airport Express, old iMac and ethernet converter/switch

Got an old iMac (266 mHz, OS 10.3.9, 384M RAM) I'm trying to get wireless and network with wife's laptop and (in a few weeks) a new MacBook. Internet is from a wireless provider (Clearwire.net) and its modem hooks into iMac's ethernet port. Works great.
Also have an Airport Express and I see two options here: Get an ethernet converter for the iMac or an ethernet switch that would connect to the Airport Express and the iMac (Clearwire modem, iMac and Airport Express are in same room, so wire connections not a problem).
The latter is cheaper (switch vs. converter), but would tie me down to that room. How much of a hassle would it be to network the iMac through the converter since it doesn't have an Airport card? Can I set up Airport Express through the Airport Assistant software in OS 10.3.9 on the iMac even though it doesn't (and can't) have a card?

All I can tell you is how I have my home network setup and hopefully that will give you some ideas. I have DSL at home which came with a DSL modem / Wireless router made by Westell. I have an eMac running 10.3.9 which I have an Airport Extreme card installed. I have my old "Grape" tray-loading iMac running OS9.2.2 for which I purchased an Ethernet-to-WiFi bridge device. And finally I have an ancient Windows ME running laptop on which I have a USB-to-WiFi device (I got it in a trade). All three of these I was able to setup and configure to access the internet via the DSL wireless router.
So to answer one of your questions, yes the Ethernet-to-WiFi bridges work fine, are OS independent, do not require drivers, and won't tie up your valuable USB port instead using the Ethernet port you likely are not using anyway.
However, the one thing I have not bothered to do is to share the computers with each other. In other words, all of them can connect to the internet but none of them are set up to see the others or share files. For what little sharing or file moving I need to do, I just use an USB Flash drive, which all three computers can see/use fine and transfer stuff that way if I need to.
Hope that at least helps a little with your quest,
    Patrick

  • Airport Extreme wont pass internet through via ethernet OR wireless ...

I have an iMac in my house that can receive internet flawlessly when plugged directly into my ethernet jack in the wall (connected to my router). I can fwd (share) that through airport to my computers in my detached garage.
I have a spare AExtreme i plugged into the ethernet wall connector and then to the iMac and internet pages wouldn't load nor would wifi airport work when joined to that AE network.
My routers firmware is on the latest edition so i dont think that's it. This AE has been sitting in the box for months so maybe its software/firmware is out of date? how do i update AE firmware?
Any clues as to whats my issue?

I am running into the same problem.
My setup was working fine until a few days ago when I noticed the flashing amber.
    My setup is/was:
    iMac 2GHz Intel Core2Duo
    OS X 10.5.2
    Airport Extreme Gigabit
Comcast Cable: Modem to AE via ethernet - AE to iMac via Ethernet - AE wireless to powerbooks.
(This setup was working fine for the last 2 months when i bought the AE - I was not using Airport on the imac since i was connecting via ethernet.
Now using that setup, I get a green light on the AE, Network status via System Pref all seem OK, but cannot connect.
Right now, I can only connect directly via ethernet to my modem. I turned on the iMac Airport, it recognized the AE and downloaded a firmware update. But this did not change the situation. I did do a reset a couple of times, as well as just left the AE off all day.
Not sure what to do next. I am currently using internet sharing sparingly in the house via iMac airport.
