IMac + Airport extreme + airport express + iTunes = no music?

I bought an iMac in February with Airport Extreme. Wireless internet & wireless printing have been fine with this.
At the weekend I bought Airport Express so I could wirelessly play my iTunes through my stereo; I have connected my Express to my MD socket using a digital-optical to mini-toslink cable, but I get no sound from the stereo.
The Express & Extreme set-up & configured in the straightforward manner as you'd expect, so I don't think that's the source of my problems.
I'm not a computer-whizz, but nor am I a complete div, but I'm sure it's a really straightforward fix I've overlooked.
Please help?

Let's double-check your AirPort Express Base Station (AX) settings ...
To set up AirTunes on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), either connect to the AX's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, use the AirPort Admin Utility to check these settings:
AirPort tab
o Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
o Wireless Mode: Join an Existing Wireless Network (Wireless Client)
o Wireless Network: <select the existing wireless network>
Music tab
o Enable AirTunes on this base station (checked)
o Enable AirTunes over the Ethernet port (optional)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <whatever you wish>
o iTunes Speaker Password (optional)
In iTunes:
iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

Maybe you are looking to re-purpose this equipment versus getting rid of it if so, the best thing to do is search the internet for tutorials.  And I say this because it's what I would do, there are a lot of tutorials online.    Hope you can find good use for them.  Worse case scenario if you can't find something right now, package them very nicely and when you come across something unbox and enjoy.  I've re-purposed a mac color classic and LOVE IT!!

  • Airport extreme and express & apple TV

I have an airport extreme and express & apple TV. I'd like to do the following:
    1) Extend the network via the express
    2) Enable the express to stream music to the stereo from the apple TV
I am sure someone has figured this out but I can't find the answer...
    Thank you

Firstly, the easiest bit (although I don't believe you need to do this):
I would try "downgrading" the Extreme station's network type to only b/g (excluding n entirely), but I don't see that option in the radio settings anymore
You will get additional settings if you hold down the option key while browsing the radio settings drop down menu.
Moving on: Unfortunately a dropped connections seems to be a problem with umpteen causes and not only is it difficult to troubleshoot with someone in a forum it can also be made even more difficult because many problems are associated with network settings on a router that the person who is trying to help is unfamiliar with.
However you seem to be convinced your problems arise when your express is running which may narrow things down a little if correct, if not it may actually lead us away from the answer to your issue.
Is it the kind of security I'm running? Should I try WEP or... none at all?
I use WPA and have no problems (password = 8 Characters)
Should I attach it a different way? Perhaps manually set it to "participate in a WDS network" or "extend a wireless network?
I have my expresses set to participate in a WDS network, but that's because I use them for other things other than itunes, I would have thought 'join a network' would be fine.
You could check that all your devices are using independent IP addresses and all are using the same subnet. You could also check that no two devices have the same mac address, I've been told a million times this can't happen, but I've seen it. You may be wise to check these things before and after your devices have been 'kicked off the network", you may even want to write them down to see if any are changing.

  • Airport extreme / airport express and AirPlay

I have a new Airport Extreme base station and a new Airport Express. I want to set up the Airport Express to connect wirelessly with the Airport extreme so I can send music from iPhone, iPad and iTunes to the Airport Express which is in my stereo cabinet. Can anyone tell me how to do this?
    Tks,
    Eric

Please check out the following Apple Support article for details on how to do this.

  • I have an airport extreme and express, if I use the extreme as a base station connected to my old router can I use the express to extend the signal while also creating a new network that only I can use?

I have an airport extreme and express, if I use the extreme as a base station connected to my old router can I use the express to extend the signal while also creating a new network that only I can use? Essentially having two wifi connection off the same network? If so how do I set this up?

Extending using a wireless connection always results in a performance compromise.
If the Express is going to extend using a wireless connection, then the Express will need to be located about half way between the AirPort Extreme and the general area where you need more wireless coverage. The more that you have line-of-sight between the Extreme and Express, the better the network will operate.
Remember......the Express can only "extend" the quality and signal speed that it receives, so it needs to be located where it can get a very good signal from the Extreme. Although Apple cleverly uses the term "extend", a more accurate term for the Express would be "repeater".
If the Express will extend by connecting to the Extreme using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection......highly recommended for best performance.....then the Express can be located exactly where you need more wireless coverage. There is no signal loss at all through the Ethernet cable, so the Express gets a full speed signal no matter where it might be located.
Post back to let us know which way to you want to go.

  • Can I boost the DSL signal using my 1st Generation Airport Extreme or Express? Also, can I get wireless printing?

Can I boost the DSL signal using my 1st Generation Airport Extreme or Express?
I just moved into a house where they have ATT DSL and it is really slow in my room.  I am hoping that I don't have to purchase a booster and I might be able to use my Airport Extreme or Express to boost it.  I don't think they want my Extreme as their router, though.  They are PC.
I am also hoping that I can set up a wireless printing situation in my room using the Express or Extreme.
I am running 10.4.11 on my old MacBook Pro laptop, 10.5.something on my old desktop (MacMini).
Thanks for any help ahead of time,
    Carole

Unfortunately, this won't work especially if you want the connection between the routers to be wireless. The two are just not compatible for configuring an extended network. However, it could work if you can have them interconnected by wire. In that case, you could configure them into a roaming network.
I don't think they want my Extreme as their router, though.  They are PC.
This shouldn't be an issue as the AirPorts support wireless clients regardless of which operating system they are running.

  • Can I connect a network storage device to Airport Extreme or Express?

I have a wireless network with an Airport Extreme base station and 2 Airport Express network extenders and would like to add a network storage device to the network so our whole family can access it for backups and storage.
Can I connect a USB or etherent storage device(hard drive) to one of the ports on the extreme or express and have it show up on all of our desktops like our printers do?
If not--Is there another to accomplish what I need?
    Thanks!

You can ethernet storage, but not USB storage.

  • Airport Extreme 802.11n + iTunes 7.1 +Airport Express = Disaster!

Airport Extreme has the network with iTunes broadcasting to Airport Express stations round the house and as much internet as I can handle. Then we get the 7.1 iTunes download.
I can still broadcast the music but the load on the network with 7.1 is crazy... if I try a bit of browsing with Safari I can wait up to a minute for a page refresh. Turn off iTunes and the page refresh reverts to blink and you miss it...
So I'm now happily in the position where I can't listen to music AND browse the internet... errrm Apple... are you listening???
I use a MacPro 4gb RAM, with upgraded wireless to 802.11n, to broadcast iTunes. Network was set up on Airport Extreme. Airport Express plugs all clients on the network.
Airport Extreme / Mac Pro / Airport Express   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

errrm Apple is not here. Other users are though. Are you asking for help? There might be other users here in the user-to-user technical help discussions who can help you with your problem.

  • New Airport Extreme & Airport Express Setup Query

    Hi,
About three weeks ago, I purchased my first Wi-Fi router so that I could use my iMac anywhere in the house, but also use my iPhone3G. This was because we do not get Edge coverage where I live in the UK, let alone 3G! And it is very handy to use the iphone when in the garden or my cellar/workshop.
So I thought I would simplify things and 'keep it in the family' so to speak, as I figured Apple products should work best with each other.
With this in mind i purchased an +Apple Extreme Base Station 802.11n+. This was very easy to setup and having set the WPA2 Personal Security, it was up and running in about 15 minutes and has worked just great.
I live in a large bungalow and find that the wi-fi coverage is great in moist areas, including the gardens, but rather weak at one side of the house where we have our home cinema setup and music systems.
With my pleasant experience with the Extreme in mind, and reading about Airtunes, I bought an +Airport Express 802.11n+ unit a couple of days ago.
I set it up to join my current Airport Extreme network, and setup my speakers etc as well as iTunes.
On the whole, the Airtunes aspect is brilliant, apart from the odd drop out from time to time, but my real concern is that my network strength has not improved at all in that area where the Airport Express is is plugged in. It is just as weak as it was when only the Extreme unit was installed.
I was under the impression that when it joined my Extreme network, the Express unit would extend the network. and it does not appear to have done so at all. On my iPhone3G it shows up as the _very lowest_ signal strength. On my partners Windows laptop, the signal strength is shown as 'poor'.
Am I doing something wrong, or misunderstanding how the Airport Express works with the Extreme unit?
    All help most welcome.

Thanks James, I have now an Extended network, and my signal strength is excellent. Once I knew what I was aiming for, it was easy enough.
    Thanks

  • Can't get Airport Extreme and Express to join same network

I recently bought an Airport Extreme so I could create a wireless network with my Airport Express. THis way I could browse the internet and stream music to my stereo at the same time. After spending hours trying to get both AP Extreme and Express linked together in a WDS network, I have failed time and time again. I have no problem setting the AP Extreme as the WDS main. My iMac and laptop connect to the AP Extreme just fine. I can set up the AP Express to stream music via iTunes to my stereo without problems. But to get them working together in the same network has got me stumped.
I've set the AP Extreme as WDS main and Express as WDS remote. They are both set to same wireless channel. Where am I going wrong? Is it a 802.11n/802.11g compatibility issue?
    I'd appreciate any insight. Thanks.

    adrian,
I have done this a dozen time today with different base stations like yours.
The only thing I can think of is this:
    1. With the WDS Main, make sure you have the address of the Remote in the box.
    2. With the WDS Remote, make sure you have the address of the Main in the box.
    3. Make sure both base stations have the same network name in the wireless tab.
    Then restart both base stations.
Let us know what you find out.

  • Setting up airport extreme and express

i purchased both the airport extreme and the express. i have cable modem and use a router (to it i have connected vonage phone and an external drive). from the router, i have successfully hooked up my airport extreme.
i now want to hook up my airport express in another room, so i can use it to connect to speakers and listen to music.
when i plug in the airport express, i dont get a connextion (amber light blinking). i have not bought the speakers/system yet, so i dont have any cables hooked to it. could this be the reason as to why i am not getting a connetction?
i also thought that i did not need to hook up anything to it, since this would just extend my wireless connection (i use a macbook and ibook)
    any thoughts?

You will want to set up the AX as a wireless client...
To set up AirTunes on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), using the AirPort Admin Utility, connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, try these settings:
    AirPort tab
    - Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
    - Wireless Mode: Join an Existing Wireless Network (Wireless Client)
    - Wireless Network: <select the existing wireless network>
    Music tab
    - Enable AirTunes on this base station (checked)
    - Enable AirTunes over the Ethernet port (optional)
    - iTunes Speaker Name: <whatever you wish>
    - iTunes Speaker Password (optional)
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
    - Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • Airport Extreme + airport express - problem outputting to multiple speakers

    Hello,
I have set up my airport express by joining my existing Airport Extreme base station wireless network. When I play my music in iTunes, I am able to select either the Computer or Airtunes for the output in the drop down box in the lower right of iTunes. When I select Airtunes, the music streams no problem to my remote speakers connected to Airport Express. However, when I try to select Multiple Speakers in the drop down menu in iTunes, a pop up Remote Speakers box opens - when I select both the Computer and Airtunes in this box, I get an error message - "An errror occurred while connecting to the remote speaker "Airtunes". An unknown error occurred (-3256)." Since the error occurs only when I try to selct both the computer internal speakers and the remote speakers, but I am able to connect to the remote speakers by themselves, I am really confused. Any thoughts?
    Charly

Just to clarify, the goal is to play iTunes on both the computer's internal speakers and my remote speakers at the same time.

  • Airport Extreme = NAS and iTunes server?

Looking for a way to move my external 2TB disk with iTunes content from my iMac and in to the Airport Extrem usb connection. All because I want to access my iTunes library without turning on my iMac. My wish is to use it all from my iPhone remote and be sure that AppleTV also synch to my library from the same disk.
    Is this possible?
Are Airport Extreme capable of doing the job as a NAS and iTunes server?

    Erik Bjørgum wrote:

    no.
you need iTunes running. you can sync content to the Apple TV, then shut down your iMac, and play the content on the Apple TV on your TV set (or stream tunes from the Apple TV to airport express). you can control the content on the ATV with the Apple remote app installed on your iPhone.

  • I want to use external hard drive connected to airport extreme that contains iTunes library to airplay library to apple tv

I have a macbook 4.1 with 4gb ram running lion. I have a 3 tb external drive that i use for time machine bakcups and a partition for my itunes library. When I want to watch a movie I connect the external hard drive to my macbook, open itunes and airplay it to my apple tv. However, this solution is not optimal because I lose the use of my macbook when it has to be connected via usb to my hard drive.
What I want to do is be able to watch a movie on my apple tv via my external hard drive wirelessly.
I realize that hooking up an airport extreme to a harddrive for time capsule purposes is not supported and thats fine.
However, will this work for the purpose of airplaying itunes library to apple tv.
Also would this work with most other wireless routers that support external hard drives? Not asking for specifics here, because i know no one can know every device. But is there any technical problem that would prevent it.
    Thanks

Yea I'm just going to wait for a solution I like better. The easiest way would be for apple to have some kind of itunes server software. Theres no reason that my computer running itunes shouldn't be able to communicate with with hard drive wirelessly just as it would with a usb cable. Kind of like wireless itunes synching with my iphone.
I don't want to use Itunes match because music is not my concern. It is the 1,000 movies that I want to watch on apple tv without tying up my laptop.
    Thanks anyway

  • I'd like to alter my Airport Extreme/Airport Express wireless network so that the 3 Expresses connect to the Extreme via Ethernet. I've been told this will create a more stable wifi signal. How do I configure this using Airport Utility? Thanks.

I currently have an Airport Extreme Base Station connected to my DSL router by Ethernet. Because I have a long, sprawling home, I have 3 Airport Expresses configured to "Extend the Wireless Network" I've established. Because of my home environment--thick walls encompassaing wire mesh, sprawling rooms, etc., it is hard to maintain a continuously-strong, stable WiFi signal. I've been told that I can create a much more stable network by connecting the Express units to the AEBS via Ethernet cable. Since my home is already wired for Ethernet, I'm considering making this change. If I proceed to establish the Ethernet connections, how do I then set up Airport Utility to accomodate this switch from a Wireless-based WiFi network to an Ethernet-based WiFi network?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Phyllis

I don't see anyplace in the Utility to designate HOW the Express units are connected, only how they relate on the network to the Extreme,
As I mentioned in the previous post, when you click the Internet icon in AirPort Utility:
Connect Using = Ethernet  (This tells each Express to connect to the Extreme using the ethernet connection)
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)  (This setting allows your AirPort Extreme to function as the "main" router on the network, as it must for the setup to work correctly.
You do not need to configure anything differently on the AirPort Extreme (as long as it is working correctly now) to connect the AirPort Express devices.
The only other question I have is the following: I'm currently already using one of the Ethernet ports on the back of the Extreme-- for my husband's iMac. I really don't think he gains much in performance over how the iMac would run through wifi, so I could disconnect the iMac. If you think the iMac would do better to stay on the Ethernet connection, should I use a switch/splitter to add an extra connection?
Since each AirPort Express must connect using ethernet, you will need to use the 3 LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme for the AirPort Express devices.
I would suggest that you try connecting the iMac using wireless to see if that will work. If the wireless connection is not satisfactory, then you can add a 5 port ethernet switch to one of the LAN ports on the Extreme and then plug all the devices connecting using ethernet....the iMac and the 3 AirPort Express devices...into the remaining 4 ports on the switch. That will leave you with 2 open ports on the AirPort Extreme for any future devices that may need to connect.
When you test out the system, here is a trick to find out which device your computer is actually connecting to at any given time as it "roams" around the house.
When you have AirPort Utility open to configure each AirPort Express, jot down the AirPort ID for each Express. You can do the same for the AirPort Extreme.
As you move around with your laptop, hold down the option key on your Mac keyboard while you click on the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of the screen. Look for the BSSID. That is the AirPort ID of the device that the laptop is connected to at that time. it should also be the ID of the closest AirPort Express (or AirPort Extreme if the laptop is close to the Extreme at the time).
Let us know how things are working when everything is up and running.
