IMac Airport

I have an intel imac that after doing some updates to it, two months ago, the Airport(pre-installed card)sometimes is recognized and sometimes not when started up. When it is not recognized I have looked in System Preferences and gone into the network folder and notice that the system thinks that there is not an airport card in the machine. It doesn't find the Airport at all.Has anyone else run into this problem?
If that isn't quirky enough, I have noticed that when it is started up with a CD in it (any CD, music etc.) the missing Airport is guaranteed. If I take out the CD and restart or hard boot my iMac the Airport comes right up.
If anyone has any ideas as to why this would be happening please let me know. Would appreciate input.
Power Mac G5, iMac G5, iMac Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

This doesn't really sound like a hardware issue since you can connect it to the timing of a Software Update. Refer to this Apple Support article:
Mac OS X: Troubleshooting installation and software updates
In addition, there was another update for Intel-based Macs last week:
AirPort Extreme Update 2007-003
However, there have been a couple, only a couple (so not too likely), of other reports on these Discussions pages of the AirPort hardware inside the iMac needing to be reconnected. If it turns out that it isn't a software issue, take it in, don't do any hardware repair yourself:)

  • IMac, Airport Express, Roku-2 player. Help!

    Hello,
Let me start by saying I don't know anything about Networking at all.
I have an iMac with Arport Express built in.
I have a Roku-2 XS player I want to stream video from the internet in another room where the Roku-2 will be.
I have an Apple Airport Express base station.
I have a Motorola SB6120 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 eXtreme Broadband Cable Modem.
How can I hook all this together.
Do I connect the base station to my Modem and then stream from the base station/modem combo to my iMac via it's built in airport and also out to my Roku-2 player?
Or do I set up the Apple Express base next to the Roku-2 in anpother room and then streem from my iMac Airport Exress to the base station and then into the Roku (either wirelss or wired)?
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks.
The Roku is like any other wireless device I guess and it should be very simple to set up but it's just that I know absolutely nothing about networking and wireless devices other than my daughters iPad and her Touch.   Those two devices  connet to the internet through my iMac's airport Exptreme card.    Since I have no experience with Wi-Fi other than Apples iPad and Touch I always thaought my Mac's built in Aiport Exptreme was some sort of router than could access non apple devices should I ever get one.
I have been told I nned some sort of wireless router to do the trick.   I grabbed the Apple Airport Express in the hopes that this would do the trick but I have no ide where to start.  It seems all the info I've read seems to start with the basic premise that you know some basics about Wirless.
So I have the stuff I've listed above but I'm not sure of the configuration.  I do not understand making a new network. I'm totally a newb.

  • WRT54G - Cannot access internet but iMac airport says internet connection is fine... what's wrong?

I use a WRT54G wireless router connected to Mac. All of a sudden, I became unable to access certain websites on my iMac, such as Facebook and Apple homepages. But i can access Yahoo website. I tried resetting my linksys setup but it doesnt solve the problem. When i access my iphone via wifi at home, i am also unable to go into app store, facebook app, and emails with images won't load. I also cannot link my iphone to itunes on my iMac. What happens on my computer when I surf the internet is that the page just loads halfway and stop "responding". But my imac airport says that my internet connection is fine, however my access has become very "restricted". Can anyone tell me what's happening and how to resolve it?

To resolve difficulties accessing some websites when connected to a Linksys router you should check the following.
    Checking the router’s security settings
    Checking your computer’s security settings
Security on the web browser is set too high
Configuring the Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) on the router
    Opening ports for secured sites
Here is the link for the same:  http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=93&login=1&vw=1&app=search&articleid=3982&userrole=Linksy...

  • How do I get my iMac AirPort to only lock onto my wirless router and not others?

Everytime I power up my iMac I have to use the AirPort drop down menu to select my Wi-Fi network from a long list.
Is there a way to set my Air Port Preferences so that it always only picks up my Wi-Fi signal automatically?
Saving me the time form always having to select it....
    Please advise

In System Prefs -> Network -> Advanced Tab see if your network is at the top of the list. If not, click and drag it there.

  • 24" iMac Airport & Dock Problem

I received my 24" iMac 2 days ago: beautiful machine! I am having trouble with various things, though, and I don't know if these are problems with hardware, software or both. I don't want to spend a lot of time installing programs and getting the computer set up if it is defective and will need to be replaced.
First of all, the computer will connect with my 1st generation AirPort Base Station manually, but it won't reconnect automatically after sleep or restart. I have 3 Apple laptops and a G5 iMac that work fine with this Airport, so I think this is a problem with my new machine.
The computer was dodgy from the start, possibly due to poor performance of my wireless mouse. I was convinced that the data I'd transferred from an old machine was causing my problems, so I erased the HD and reinstalled the system and base software, then did a software update to get everything up to date. I also reset the PRAM and repaired permissions (does that ever really help?). That is when I discovered the mouse issue so I'm not sure if the early problems I had were all due to the mouse's inconsistent performance.
I connected to the wireless network with the initial setup of the machine after I reinstalled the system. Since then I've successfully connected through the Airport icon menu as well as Internet Connect and the troubleshooter program, but the connection lasts only until the next sleep or shutdown. I have to type in the name of the network and the password each time.
I'm running a closed network. I've entered the Airport ID to the Airport base station and as I said, it will connect manually without problems. The Network is set to join preferred networks by default and my network "Home Wireless" is the only preferred network that shows up in the list.
Next, the dock intermittently won't show up when I drag the cursor to the bottom of the screen. It displays all the time if I unclick the "Automatically hide and show the Dock" button, but I like the dock hidden when I'm not using it. This behavior is different from any of my 6 other Macs. I have plugged in a USB mouse and the dock seems to be working more reliably with it, though there have been some episodes of the dock not appearing even when I'm using the USB mouse when the wireless mouse is also connected. Could the wireless mouse be causing this problem with the dock?
The wireless mighty mouse's performance IS very spotty. Pushing the scroll button won't reliably call up the Dashboard, and the side buttons seem to either activate the Expose function too easily or not at all. In fact, there have been times when each of the buttons haven't worked properly.
Thanks for any advice. I'm hoping that replacing the wireless mouse will fix the mouse and dock problem and that the airport issue will be a software problem that will be fixed soon. I've read several others' posts relating to networking problems with the current generation if intel macs. I don't think that these are all operator dependent.

I unclicked "create a closed network" and now
everything seems to work on wake from sleep and on
restart. Is that the same as broadcasting the SSID?
    Yes
If anyone else is following in my footsteps, I also
changed the security from 40 to 128 bit WEP at the
same time because if WEP is a useless scheme as I've
read, I want it to be the best darn useless scheme
    it can!
Though 128bit WEP can be hacked, it takes a lot more traffic to find the key then using 40bit WEP.
Thanks iFelix. Any idea how much chance there is for
someone hacking my WEP in a residential neighborhood?
Depends on who your neighbours are...
To be honest if you lived in an apartment block I would argue you were more at risk than if you live in a detached property with only a couple of neighbours.
Should I update my wireless system? I'm happy with
the performance of the AirPort otherwise,
If you're happy and it's working, keep it as it is.
    but I'm
disappointed that they don't allow an upgrade to a
more secure system and also VERY disappointed that I
can't at least create a working closed network with
    my new Apple iMac.
The thing is putting your Airport base station in a brown paper bag adds as much security as creating a closed network does.
A wireless network is still broadcasting and therefore detectable regardless of whether you broadcast the SSID (closed network) or not.
A determined hacker (one who can hack 128bit WEP) will not be put off by a closed network.
As for casual users, well the 128bit WEP will stop them.
Unfortunately "Closed" networks, MAC access control lists, and reduction in transmission power are all more "feel good" security rather than real security. All these various approaches are dated and mistakenly lead to overconfidence.
WPA is your friend if you value wireless security, but that will only be possible if you upgrade your wireless router.
It could be for a variety of reasons why your Mac and original Airport don't like working with a closed network, however it does seem to happen more often when using hardware from different manufacturers.
The reason why your previous Mac didn't have this issue is that it used a different wireless chipset to your new Mac, which is the main reason for the issue you are having now.

  • IMac Airport Wireless from UK not working in New Zealand

I have a iMac that i bought in the UK but now live in New Zealand and i cannot get the wireless internet. Sometime s i can connect however often it is slow and drops out. then when i try to reconnect the internet times out. Iv tried changing the security encryption to no avail.
every other computer works on the network fine, i can only think it must be something to do with the airport region.
does anyone know or have experienced similar problems from moving accessing wireless internet from a different country other than where they purchased there mac from?
any help or feedback would be much appreciated

    Hi,
At least according to the AirPort Extreme (802.11n draft) specifications, there are certain channel differences between New Zealand and other countries/regions. I do not know whether this, somehow, could have something to do with the difficulties in question (normally, in the case of a channel problem, a connection should not be possible). Which iMac model is it? Which base station is used? Did you buy the base station and the other computers locally?
Have you tried moving the iMac a bit? Is there a cordless phone near the iMac? This article about interference could perhaps be of interest.

  • IMac,airport extreme router, IPad2

Before I brought the iPad2 home, I set up my airport extreme to work with my ISP and I could connect my iMac wirelessly via safari to the Internet and surf the web from anywhere in the house.  I brought the iPad2 home, and it immediately found the network. I typed in the password and it connected, no problem.  However, if I want to connect tog the Internet now with my iMac I must plug it in to the router, it won't work wirelessly.  Also, if I am connecting to the Internet via the IMac plugged into the router, I can't access Internet with the iPad2.  When I go into airport utility to see if there is an obvious change I should make, it indicates that the router settings don't need changing.  So, I know there is something I must change, but I don' t want to foul up the router settings, as I do have Internet access, but the network is not letting more than one device access at the same time.
Would appreciate some input as to what steps I might take to correct the problem.  I think it must be something very simple, but I haven't hit on it yet after several attempts.

    Theoretically possible using:
    System Preferences>Sharing>Internet Sharing
Choose the iMac wi-fi and configure a network name and password.
You may need to check the hotspot terms and conditions to check that it will allow more than one device/computer to connect to the internet. As you are probably aware AppleTV cannot access login screens for wi-fi hotspots only set normal local wi-fi settings.
Another option would be to run ethernet firect to AppleTV2 - if that's impractical consider a pair of mains powerline home networking plugs that can bridge the gap to give ethernet to a distant device in the house - check makes like Netgear, Devolo etc.

  • IMac Airport continues to drop connection

I seem to be having the exact same issue that many of you have.  My iMac is the only piece of hardware in my house that has this issue.  The iMac will randomly drop its internet connection.  If you turn off airport and back on it will reconnect just fine, however this is a huge problem.  I can't stay connected long enough to download anything of size from anywhere.  Several apps, iTunes, home sharing.. I can't complete any of it because this connection always drops.
I've seen SEVERAL posts from people with the same issue, and it seems to center around iMacs purchased in 2011, which is what mine is.  Has there been a solution ever verified?

Seems even worse with 10.7.4, some have fixed it by going back to 10.7.3
But might see if this is along the same lines...

I know that apple have released a rubbish version of mac that has problemos with internet sharing
    so here is da answer
    1. go to finder>(computer name)>macintosh HD>library>preferences
    2. copy the entire systemconfiguration folder and systemconfiguration.old folder to your desktop
    3. restart mac and device which you share intenet to
then you have internet that is about 3x slower than the da 10.7.3 intenet sharing, but works
then, just wait for apple to release da 10.7.4 fixed
    please use da steps!

  • IMac + Airport extreme + airport express + iTunes = no music?

I bought an iMac in February with Airport Extreme. Wireless internet & wireless printing have been fine with this.
At the weekend I bought Airport Express so I could wirelessly play my iTunes through my stereo; I have connected my Express to my MD socket using a digital-optical to mini-toslink cable, but I get no sound from the stereo.
The Express & Extreme set-up & configured in the straightforward manner as you'd expect, so I don't think that's the source of my problems.
    I'm not a computer-whizz, but nor am I a complete div, but I'm sure it's a really straightforward fix I've overlooked.
    Please help?

Let's double-check your AirPort Express Base Station (AX) settings ...
To set up AirTunes on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), either connect to the AX's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, use the AirPort Admin Utility to check these settings:
    AirPort tab
o Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
o Wireless Mode: Join an Existing Wireless Network (Wireless Client)
o Wireless Network: <select the existing wireless network>
    Music tab
o Enable AirTunes on this base station (checked)
o Enable AirTunes over the Ethernet port (optional)
    o iTunes Speaker Name: <whatever you wish>
    o iTunes Speaker Password (optional)
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • IMac / Airport Extreme

My new iMac has Airport Extreme. Currently I use the RJ45 jack to connect to my cable modem. I just purchased an Airport Express for the Airtunes feature. Can I enable Airport Extreme to link with the Express and still be wired to my cable modem? Or do I have to go completely wireless? When I go to the Airport utility on the iMac, everything is grayed out. I don't see anything in the manual about this, and I don't want to start changing network settings without knowing first. Thanks

Watch out for confusing terminology. "AirPort Extreme" is the name of one of Apple's AirPort base stations. Is that what you mean, or you mean that your iMac has high-speed Wi-Fi capability.
If the latter, if you want to use an AirPort Express, since it only have one Ethernet port, you'll have to connect that to your cable modem. That in turn means that any other connection (other than an audio connection to the Express) will have to be wireless.

  • IMAC AIRPORT PROBLEM

Jag har 2 imac datorer och på den ena fungerar internet utmärkt men på den andra så står det att jag är ansluten men så står det !ingen internet anslutning. vad ska jag göra för att kunna fixa detta?

I'm not an expert, but this is what appears to have worked for me.
I connect wirelessly to the net. Till I installed the updates -- for first 8 hours -- no problem. Then I installed the updates. Problems. My iMac would say I had net but every time I tried to connect, no. I installed more updates. No net. I tried everything. Yesterday I finally ended up wiping the HD, reinstalling the OS, not allowing updates to Airport or the OS. Since I have had a strong net connection (24 hours).
Again, no expert but this appears to have worked...least for the last day. Maybe my experience might be helpful for you or someone else.

  • IMac Airport Issue

I have an Intel iMac running 10.5.8 & the airport hasn't worked adequately in a long time. My MacBook Pro can sit next to it & get a full signal & the iMac signal comes & goes. Anyone know why?

I have exactly the same problem on my spankin new iMac 21.5in. It has Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and drops Airport randomly several times a day. Very annoying. Can fix it by restarting airport but that gets friggin tiring after the first few times!!
Talked to AppleCare and they seem clueless at the time, what gives? They have had me delete configurations and create new users and what not and it still does not work.

  • IMac - Airport (Ethernet) to use Internet hosted by Linksys WRT54G

    Is this scenario possible.
iMac G4 hardwired via Ethernet to Airport Base Station
DSL Internet fed through Linksys WRT54G
My iMac is not Airport enabled so can I use the base station to somehow connect to and utilize the Wireless Internet Connection available from the Linksys router.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    G4 iMac 800   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

If your AirPort Base Station was an Extreme or Express, it would be possible to link them to a Linksys WRT54G wireless router as you wish to do. However, since you are posting in this forum, I assume you have a Snow or Graphite ABS, neither of which can make the connection to another router wirelessly.

  • Music from external HD- iMac- Airport Express- stereo receiver- speakers?

Can I stream my music from my external HD to my iMac (current set-up, which works) to a new Airport Express which will be connected to a stereo receiver and speakers, and avoid going through my older D-Link router? In other words, will my (fairly new) iMac talk wirelessly to a new AE?
Reading all the posts about various ways to set this up is giving me a headache ....
    Thanks in advance.

The default "out-of-the-box" mode of the AX is a wireless router. That means that the AX will broadcast its own wireless network when powered-up. Since you already have a wireless router you, in effect, will have two wireless networks operating at the same time if you leave the AX in its default configuration ... and why you would have to change to the wireless network created by the AX in order to stream iTunes.
The inconvenience of this, of course, is that you would have to switch to the D-Link's wireless network when you want Internet access and to the AX's when streaming. To overcome this problem, the AX would need to be configured to "join a wireless network"; in this case, that would be the network created by the D-Link. Once the AX is joined, you will be able to access the Internet & stream iTunes simultaneously.
To reconfigure the AX to do so, I suggest that you first access the AX's wireless network from your iMac's built-in AirPort (on the menubar). (Note: The default network name of the AX would be something like AirPort Network xxxxxx, where the x's are the last six digits of the AX's AirPort ID (printed on the label attached to the AX).) Then use the AirPort Utility, in "Assist Me" mode, and follow the directions to join a wireless network.
