IMac Alu 20" blowing smoke! What do I do?

Hi there, now as crazy as this might sound, tonight i thought my iMac would set on fire.
I was working on my Imac trying to rip some music on itunes and well all of a sudden the thing made a sort of a weird noise. Actually it was kind of a little explosion (!!!) and then some smoke started coming out from the back of the machine.
That came out of that small line in the upper part of the case (back of the machine).
That really scared me off! At first i thought it was some kind of a problem with the lamp that I keep on my desk, but the smell of plastic is still pretty bad and you can smell that only on the machine.
That's quite a clear signal that it was something related only to the iMac.
I have no idea of what the issue is ... i have istat and i tried to take a note of how are the conditions of the fans, cpu etc etc.
I'm going to report those here
FANS
Cpu Fans 1199 rpm
Hard drive 1200 rpm
Optical drive 998 rpm
(these seem to be not right, i mean maybe one of the fans stopped working? have no idea tho, just a thought.I have been using the mahcine for quite a while now, for about 50 mins just to run firefox and the temps are still the same)
CPU
CPU User 2%
System 0%
Idle 98%
Temps
Cpu A 33
Gpu 43
Gpu diode 43
gpu heatsink 41
ambient 19
memory control 35
airportcard 35
hdbay1 42
I tried to reboot and to run a few applications everything seems to be running fine. I started the isight and it works, I played some music and it works fine too.....so I really don't know
Hope you guys can give me some help here.
Cheers
Tony

They replaced my imac, I got a brean new machine, the bad thing is thatg now Im dealing with the HUMMMM noise. It's so frustrating. I just can't believe it I wanted to get an Imac because i loved the osx and how my macbook has been working for the last year....but this imac adventure was not good at all.
I'm still testing the imac and seeing if i can get over the HUMM noise, I wonder if even other guys have that kind of issue. It seems like there is some kind of problem with the fans that are running all the time, the measuremens on istat seem to be fine cpu fan 1198 hd 1199 optical drive 998m ....but still there's this annoying humm in the background....I'm tempted to ask for a refund an give this a try in a few months when maybe they will have fixed all the problems.

The fan on my brand new Imac Quadcore is blowing extremely loud. Is this normal?

I have the same problem on my 2010 IMAC 27" I7. Even if the mac is running at idle it occurs. It was already at the apple store for repair.
Later they told me, they found nothing with the hardware test so its not their problem?!!!
the activity monitors shows also nothing special, even the cpu's are at idle. No streaming or rendering, just working on the web or some normal documents...
I runned smcfancontrol to check whats going on. It seems that the onboard temperature sensor is measuring wrong instantly so they SMC thinks, its to hot/or not and then spinning up the fans to full power.
SMC reset is not really working, or just for some hours.
    Can anybody else help?
    Thx

  • Okay so I set up my Time Capsule already and is now backing up 2 of my iMacs. Works great. What I want to know is how to use the TC to directly store files? I want to do this to delete some files but still have them on the TC for future reference..

Okay so I set up my Time Capsule already and is now backing up 2 of my iMacs. Works great. What I want to know is how to use the TC to directly store files? I want to do this to delete some files on iMac 20inch but still have them on the TC for future reference..eg some movies on iTunes. I want to directly save them on the drive so I can delete them from iTunes and gain some storage. (Ps on iMac 20 inch (it's almost full - 320 GB) when I enter time machine, a tab comes up on finder which reads "Time Machine backups" it's able to be ejected like a disc or a connected device. On the iMac 20 inch, I dragged some files onto there as if using it like a hard drive. Is this the correct method? Then I went to my 27inch iMac and saw the "Time Machine Backups" hoping to see the files I dragged from the 20inch iMac. But the files were not there except a folder that said "Backups.backupdb". Can someone help me?

It's not a good idea to use a network disk for both Time Machine backups and other things.  By design Time Machine will eventually consume all the space on its output disk, which will then cause problem for your other files.  I'd store those other files on an external disk connected to the Time Capsule.  The problem with that is that Time Machine will only back up files that are local to your Mac.  That means that you'll only have one copy of the files on or attached to your Time Capsule.
By the way, you've been misled by poor field labeling on this forum into typing a large part of your message into the field intended for the subject.  In the future just type a short summary of your post into that field and type the whole message into the field below that.

  • IMac Alu 2007 crashed and does not startup anymore

    Hello
    I have a iMac alu 2007 with OS 10.6.8
Yesterday evening, it suddenly crashed and I did not manage to start it again.
Actually, during one second (not more) it seems OK , I can hear the noise from superdrive but then nothing happens. When I place my hear on the computer, I can hear a little noise (crakkling) telling me it powered but nothing more, nothing on screen, no boot.
I have tried to unplug during 15 s but no change.
I have also tried to boot on one external disk but nothing.
my last hope was a stop because of too high temperature but it does not work also this morning.
    Any idea ?

    Hi,
did u boot through firewire or usb ?
Try to boot from cd and holding down the "c" key when u start the computer. Is it working ?
    try this link:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1587
It could be that your hard drive crashed, that is one of these crakkling noises.

You need 10.7.5 or later for iCloud.
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99.
If you sign into the App Store and try to purchase Mountain Lion but the App Store says your computer is not compatible then you may still be able to upgrade to Lion per the following information.
    A. Upgrading to Mountain Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mountain Lion or Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion or Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion — System Requirements
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    B. Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • My imac is running very slowly, what can i do?

my imac is running very slowly, what can i do?

Your profile was way out of date so the updater I gave you will not be suitable.   This thread does prove the need to keep up to date.
The 4GB is sufficient for your apparent needs though it may be helpful to apply the updater below for the newly advised OS.   It may take some time; it is a biggie!
Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1   Then check things out.
If that doesn't help check out the number of operations that are running in the background.   If you have the iStat Pro app located in your dashboard, that will help.   It's an excellent app - and free.   See if they're all necessary.
Apple - Downloads - Dashboard Widgets - iStat Pro
Almost certainly others will chip in soon but hopefully I've set you on your way.

Got my 1st Mac!  I have an iMac with Nvidia GT640M.  What great native OSX FPS or MMO games will run well on it, if any?
I'm an Android developer and got my iMac primarily for coding at home as well as general home computing (after being issued a macbook air at work and falling in love with OSX).  I was a huge Windows gamer  in the past but not in years.  I switched from Windows to Linux a few years ago (when I transitioned my career from Windows development to Android).  So gaming wasn't a big consideration in fact I didn't want anything too great for gaming so that I don't get sucked into gaming 24x7.  However if I can enjoy a game or two on my iMac that would be cool.
I want a native Mac game and I want it to run well (not just barely on the lowest settings) or I would not bother.  Will anything run great on my iMac or at least very good?

It's the same Deus Ex franchise.
If you want multyplayer games, again see App store where you will find Call of duty, Call of Duty 2, Call of Duty Black ops, and Modern Combat.
You can also search online for Mac compatible games.

  • My imac will not turn over, what should I do

my imac will not turn over, what should I do

    Just FYI,
You are not addressing Apple here.
People here who help troubleshoot and attempt to correctly answer technical questions in these Apple Support Communities are Apple users just like yourself.
There are two initial things you can try.
    An NVRAM reset.
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
After resetting NVRAM or PRAM, you may need to reconfigure your settings for speaker volume, screen resolution, startup disk selection, and time zone information. The logic board battery helps retain NVRAM/PRAM settings when your computer is shut down.
IF this fails to help reboot your iMac, you could try an SMC reset.
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
Check back if neither one of these solves your iMac's issues.

  • Screen unevenness on iMac Core Duo 20. What to do?

    Hi Guys,
I got my first iMac Core Duo 20 last Thursday. Everything is beautiful except the screen, which had pretty bad screen unevenness at the two bottom corners. I took it back today and exchanged it for a new one. But it seems this new one is even worse. It's so bad that when I try to play a widescreen video, the entire bottom black bar appears to be light grey.
I am now a little afraid to get another 20 and experience the same problem. Is the 17 inch iMac better in this regard? My girlfriend's iMac G5 20 doesn't have this problem at all. Is this maybe just a bad batch I ran into? I know some uneveness is unavoidable on consumer LCD panels but what I saw on these two iMacs were just too impossible to live with. iMac Core Duo 20 owners, what are your experiences?
    Thank you all in advance!

It is under warrantee, take it back until you get what you have paid for. Have them test a new one in the store before you take it home.
BTW, mine has worked great from day one!

  • Can I swap old iMac (white) HARD DRIVE into iMac (alu) w/ OS installed

I have the older iMac 20" intel with a 500GB hard drive and wanted to swap it into my newer iMac 20" aluminum, which currently has the 320GB hard drive. I was wondering if the disks were physically swapped, would the OS still run considering the newer hardware?
Would Leopard be able to recognize the hardware changes or would a backup, reinstall and restore be in order? I am trying to avoid having to move all my data to an external only to put it back on again the same drive. Thank you!

Physically the drive is swappable but not without voiding your warranty. As for the system goes theoretically it would work however since the ALU iMacs are newer than your current white iMac, your current system lacks all of the hardware drivers for the new iMac and the system would need to be reinstalled. Probably the easiest way would be to use the migration assistant to migrate your files from your old computer. However if you still plan on swapping the drives what you could do is swap the 500G into your new iMac then immediately boot up to the install disk that comes with the ALU iMac and perform an Archive install of the system. It would be a good idea to backup all of your data before physically moving the drive just in case.

  • LaCie Quadra 500 GB not recognize ONLY on iMac Alu

Today the LaCie Quadra 500 GB connected via FW800 to an iMac 20" Alu suddenly stopped to be recognized by the system... The drive emitted a strange noise as if it was an old vinile LP...
I know, bad feelings about its safeness... but when I connected it to a PowerMac G5 it was immediately mounted on the desktop and either Disk Utility and Drive Genius have reported the disk is OK, with no software or hardware issues...
Re-connected back to the iMac it isn't still recognized, even if I've changed cable, port and chain position with another LaCie disk.
I've sent a support request to LaCie and I'll wait an answer in the next days, but if anyone could have an idea about this problem, I'll be glad to read it.
    Thanks,
    Matteo

    Macteo,
You're very welcome and I hope we get to the bottom of this.... Here's something to do - with the drive plugged in ( and not responsive) - go into System Profiler ( you can get there via the Apple menu and clicking more info ). What does it say under your Firewire settings? Does the drive show up there? Name of the drive, etc.
I re-read your original posting and noticed it said the drive made a weird noise. Hmmm.. I had a Lacie Big Disk Extreme FW800 drive and it recently died on me. I hope that Lacie technical support are better with you then with me as they we not extremely helpful as my drive was past the standard warranty....
Anyway, get back to us with the System Profiler information and maybe that will shed some additional light on this mystery, Mr. Watson.
    Good luck!
    Rudy
