IMac Aluminum 24" - upgrade to 1 TB HDD - DIY instructions & photos

Hi there!
I've upgraded my iMac Aluminum 24" to 1 TB hard drive and 4 GB RAM - instructions, procedure and photos available here:

In terms of external vs. internal HDD ugprade, these are my concerns for swapping the internal drive:
Speed. I believe the speed of firewire 400 is 400 Mbps, the speed of firewire 800 is 800Mbps, and the speed of my internal SATA 3 is listing in "about this mac" as 1 Gbps, so yes, the speed was my primary concern while deciding to swap the internal hard drive.
In addition, not all external hard drive enclosures have power management capabilities, which in my mind is important for a long healthy life of your drive - and more importantly data you have on it!
My other concern was to have it all in one machine, in order to avoid a messy desk (I'm almost getting there).
Another concern for swapping the internal drive one might think of (not as important in my case) was physical protection of data -- its easier for someone to take away a small external device than a whole machine.
And finally, the TCO (total cost of ownership) played an important role in my decision to swap the internal drive.
Having said that, you will need some tech know-how in order to upgrade the internal drive DIY.
However, for an average non-technical user, I'd really recommend purchasing an external firewire 800 hard drive (that's as almost as fast as the internal one), but making sure the unit has power management capabilities as well! (not all manufacturers do, nor they list it, so make sure to ask!)
On the other hand, I've came across a post (I believe it was on this forum) of someone going to a certified Apple tech center with his machine and the hard drive and paying about $30 to have them replace it. Sounds like a good option too.

    Hi Everybody,
I use an Epson Stylus Office BX320FW printer with my IMac.  Since upgrading OSX, I have lost the ability to print and scan.  I have downloaded printer drivers from both Epson and Apple.  I am using the printer in wifi mode but can not get it print or scan.  How do I uninstall the Epson software and start all over again?

Not using any mouse pad, I have a very smooth desktop. But I just tried to use a sheet of A4 printing paper, but no result, the problem persisted.
Someone on this forum suggested, that USB3 may interfere with the magic mouse.
I have 2 LaCie HDD's about 70 cm away from the mouse, I use them on Thunderbolt. But in operation or not - the result is the same, the mouse plays up! Just now I was clicking the desktop and the mouse created a new folder!!
    Thanks for the advice, Bee

  • Video card failure on iMac (aluminum) - Excellent Apple Support

My iMac (aluminum) 20" (2.4 GHz, 2GB RAM, 500GB HDD) greeted me with a grey / black screen this morning, a reboot resorted in the screen flashing as if the back light was going as it booted up along with static / noise lines and dashes then the screen going grey / black again. Called Apple Support and they talked me through the various PRAM resets etc all with the same effects. He suggested that I could either have it repaired or a new iMac sent out to me, I opted for the latter as I asume this will be much quicker. I was able to connect the imac to my plasma TV and reboot and it luckily picked up the TV as the main display. I copied all my info to an external drive and carried out a fresh install of the OS. I disconnected and rebooted the imac but the display, as I guessed was still toast. I'm very dissapointed about the iMac dying like that but very pleased with Apple's Support Team here in the U.K. I'm now back to watching the delivery status pages, should be shipping between the 18th / 22nd October and hopefully arriving in time for Leopard 10.5!

Sad to hear about your iMac dying like that, however it's a good positive story in the end, which seems to be lacking these days as far as iMac's are concerned. One up for Apple!

  • Who is the quietest : iMac Aluminum, MBP, Mac Pro

I will shortly upgrade / refresh. In the process I hope to rid myself of an extremely annoying aspect of my iMac G5 1.8ghz, Rev A: fan noise.
So I have a quite expensive and professional grade preamp (Great River NV) and Mic (AKG 414) - and what of it. Every time I go to record a vocal or acoutsic guitar track I am witness to the accurate capturing of a fan's whirling. Wow. Of couse running audio is processor intensive- so it heats up and bingo. I want it no more.
Which way to go for silence (or close to it).
    * I have heard the MBP are quiet, but concerned as I have had laptops whirl away before.
    * I have also heard the new iMac Aluminums are quiet - but under what kind of load ? Will the increased horsepower eliminate this as they won't be gasping for breath as my g5 is now ?
    * Mac Pro - not sure can someone comment. I sppose I could always doa long monitor cable run - and perhaps they are better cooled.
I'd love any feedback as right now the machine I have is not at all a serious audio recording device.
    Thx up front

I was on the verge of buying an isolation cab for my old Dual G4, but now that I have my 2.66 MacPro, it's the quietest thing in the room. Suddenly I noticed how the little fans in the Motu HD192 interfaces are whirring away quietly... But the Mac is never an issue. I haven't even bothered to move it even a few feet away since it's practically silent (except for hard drive access noises - which rarely interfere with recording in my experience). The only real noise-maker on a MacPro is the DVD drive, but don't stick a disk in it while you're recording - problem solved.
So while I can't compare to any other recent mac models, I can say that in my studio (with nice mics and mic pres from API/Chandler/UA etc) the Mac is no longer an issue where noise is concerned.
And the fact that the CPU kicks the tar out of my old G4 is kinda' nice too.

  • Can't open Office after upgrading to a larger HDD.

I recently upgraded my HDD in my Mac to one twice the size. I used the Disk Recovery tool (command + R) to clone my old HDD with all of the software that was installed on it to my new HDD. Now that everything is copied over I tried to open Office for
Mac 2011 and it asks me for the product key.
I am not sure where my original software and product key code is. I have already reformatted the previous HDD and don't have any of the stored information on it.
Is there any way that I can recover or get a different product key that would allow Microsoft Office 2011 to work again for me? I did not know that upgrading to a larger HDD would cause me to lose the Office activation that I already have.
    Thank you for your time.

You need a newer 2011 or later iMac to use Airplay.

  • I am experiencing difficulties opening some web-based PDF files on my iPad. I was having the same difficulty opening the same PDFs on my iMac (after I upgrade to Yosemite) but was able to overcome it by adjusting the Adobe Reader plug-in settings.

I am experiencing difficulty opening some web-based PDF documents on my iPad. I had exactly the same difficulty on my iMac (after I upgraded to Yosemite) but was able to overcome it by adjusting the Adobe Reader plug-in security settings in Safari (in OSX).
Unfortunately there does not seem to be a way to similarity adjust the security settings in Safari in iOS 8.
The message I get when I attempt to open the PDF (on my iPad) is as follows:
"To view the full contents of this document you need a later version of PDF viewer. You can upgrade to the latest version of Adobe Reader from ..."
Needless to say this is unhelpful for two reasons:
    - I have the very latest version of Adobe Reader; and
    - in iOS Adobe Reader is not a plug-in and plays absolutely no role in opening web-based PDF documents.
If anyone has experienced this difficulty and has been able to overcome it I would be most appreciative to hear of you solution.
    Cheers

I dont have Apple Care (but it is new and i have Apple Store Commercial Invoice)
    Sorry for my poor english
    Andre

The bad part is (and I'm just playing devils advocate here) is that since Apple themselves didn't ship it but your friend did, that can be used as a way for Apple to say "well, how do we know you didn't break it yourself" know what I mean?
If Apple shipped it (again playing devils advocate here) and it arrived that way, then it's DOA and Apple will replace it no problem.
If a person bought it and sent it via UPSExpress, FedEx, DHL, UPS, etc, there has to be some justification that it WAS working prior to shipping and it's the shipping company's fault that it's broke and then it's only (or most of the time) if you bought insurance then the shipping company will reimburse you and/or provide the means to replace it.
Apple I'm sure will do the best they can, for the most part they are top notch in customer service, but from what you described, it would appear that Apple wouldn't have to do anything since they may not be at fault and/or not legally responsible for replacing it.
Again, I'm just playing devils advocate.

  • Can an iMac G4 be upgraded to an Intel processor?

I was wondering can an iMac G4 be upgraded to an Intel processor? This stems from the whole PPC no longer being supported by Adobe Flash etc.

    No.

  • IMac Aluminum keyboard numbers not working.. Works in windows vista though

    Hey Everyone,
I have an iMac running the last version of Leopard (10.5.6) and for some reason the 0-9 keys on the keyboard don't show up as numbers. I'm talking about the number pad on the right hand side of the keyboard, the ones in front of the qwerty keys work fine.. Whenever I press a number in Leopard on the number pad it does weird things like highlights the box, brings up sub menus and other stuff like that.
I have Bootcamp on this computer and when I boot into Vista the number keys work fine so I know it's nothing wrong with the keyboard. It some preference. Could anyone help me please?
    Thanks,
    -Mike

Thanks again! I went through the system preferences and sticky keys was already off. I own an iMac Aluminum and it looks like that article only was for MacBook and MacBook Pro computers. I also tired resetting the PRAM. If I only backed up I could just restore from that. My current NAS Drive (Western Digital MyBook World) just died so I purchased a time capsule as a replacement so I should be able to back up now and avoid problems like this..
It's just some setting in Leopard somewhere but I just can't figure out where...

  • HT201257 I have an iMac (Mid 2007) upgraded to Lion OS. My fan runs all the time at high speed. I tried the SMT reset without results. I could not try the AHT test because it is not on my computer or install disk. Any suggestions what I can do to correct

I have an iMac (Mid 2007) upgraded to Lion OS. My fan runs at high speed all the time. I reset the SMT without results. I had no way to do the hardware test.
Can I fix this high fan speed?

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
If the above doesn't help then create a new user account. Log into the new account. Does this fix the problem?

I have a 2006 iMac with an upgraded hard drive, 640 gb. recently i've noticed that the Finder keeps saying I only hve 12 gb available. it lists 18 items under macintosh HD and if (using Get Info) you add up those 18 items I only come up with just over 500 gb of space.
