Imac aluminum and games. Beach Ball forever.

Would I be right in assuming that the video card in this thing is not really up to par for 3d work. Does the card have known problems?
Pool balls , any balls , chemical models , look like crumpled wads of paper.
Should the beach ball appear for the opening of every folder? The machine is loaded only with the software it came with and is slower than a ten year old windows AMD first generation machine.

Sounds like your using all of your available RAM. I would suggest doing what the other poster suggested and buy new RAM.

  • My iMac 27 inch is very slow seems to churn and the beach ball is showing

I have an iMac 27" bought in 2010 3.2 GHz Intel core i# processor, 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 Memory,  1TB SATA disk.
It is running for a long time when starting up and the beach ball is showing several times. It can last for up to 45 minutes for all the processor noise to go down then it works fine until I open an application. It starts to run in the background again and everything slows down. At first it was the backup but that is not the case anymore. Could someone help me to speed this iMac up again.
    Thanks
    Abe

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

  • When I open safari, I get a blank page and the beach ball.

When I open safari, I get a blank page and the beach ball. If I try to go to a website, it will load up to a certain point sometimes—the .com of www.facebook.com for instance—but other times, nothing at all.
I've fixed this once before by deleting some files in the library folder—extensions & preferences I believe—and choosing not to have plug-ins selected, then restarting the whole computer—rather than just safari. It will work fine for a day, or maybe 3 at the most, before I have to repeat the process all over again. I'm sure it's because I usually put plug-ins back on once I get it to work, because you can't really use the internet without using plug-ins. But I'm using Chrome right now, as I do when I'm too lazy or too in a rush to try the whole process of getting safari to work again, and I don't have a single issue with it.
My question is really, what plug-in could cause this to happen repeatedly? It's not like I'm going to websites that may have malware on them. I spend most of my day going to some of the most visited websites on the internet.
Is there a known bug out there, because Java has been overrunning concurrently with this happening. It's CPU % runs around 100. I quit the process, but it doesn't change anything. So, other than the fan turning on, I have not had any popup telling me that safari has crashed, that I'm not connected to the internet, or that something went horribly, horribly wrong. I'm pretty sure Safari things it's running fine, but it's not.
    Thanks in advance.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Copy or drag — do not type — the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.) You can omit the final line ending in “$”.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
Remember, steps 1-5 are all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Second hard drive and the Beach Ball

Hello again, time to use the ever helpful Apple boards.
I've been having a strange and disturbing problem, disturbing because it always ends in a hard reboot.
I have two internal hard drives, one for running software, (called HD) the other for storing files. (Called FILES...Mostly Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator files).
Sometimes, when waking from sleep, I click on FILES and get an everlasting Beach Ball. I try to relaunch the finder and it won't relaunch, so a power switch reboot is the only way to get it going again.
What I've done: Disk Utility and Disk Warrior repairs. Apple Hardware Test shows all OK. SMART info still shows disk is good. I Checked connections. PRAM reset, permissions, com.apple.finder.plist deleted, still it happens. A reboot and everything is OK again, it's just that it's a hard reboot. It does not happen every time, but once or twice a week. I backup regularly so no data has been lost.
Is this a problem with the finder or could it be the drive? Logic board?
I think I am going to buy another drive and put it in there and see if it still happens. Unitl then, does anybody have an idea what this could be?
    G5 Dual 2.3   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   5.5 GB RAM

Are both hard drives using the built-in SATA bus? Or have you added a Parallel ATA to PCI card to enable the use of Parallel ATA hard drives.
Yes, they are both on the SATA.
I have come up with an interesting trick/workaround. If I have an item in the trash from FILES and I try to empty it before detecting the "freeze" (before I click on FILES and get Beach Ball) I get an error message saying the trash can't be emptied.
Stupid me, I didn't write down the error code because I didn't know that it had anything to do with this problem when it happened. But now I keep an item in the trash from FILES all the time, and I empty trash when waking from sleep. One of these times I'll get that error code again and post it in this thread.
More importantly, until I figure out what this is, I can use this to tell me that the "freeze" is occuring without triggering the Beach Ball, and thus avoiding the hard reboot.

  • Slow and spinning beach balls after 10.8.2 update

After the initial install of ML 10.8 for the most part the sytem seemed to run fine.  Very few snags.  But after the 10.8.1 and now the 10.8.2 updates I am finding slower and slower times for programs to boot and waiting to be able to type anything and spinning beach balls all the time.  I have noticed this continuously bringing up the contacts program, MS word, Pages, Apple Mail etc.   Initial booting of the computer is slower as well and often has a frozen beach ball for a minute or so before it unfreezes and proceeds.  Also huge slow down in printing from my wifi printer which before was super fast.  I have reset the SMC, Pram, did disk permission repairs and all of those items.  Nothing has changed anything.  This is a early 15" 2011 MBP unit with 8 gig of ram, 750 gig hard drive with only 250 gig in use, 2.2 I7 processor and Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB.  All software is updated to latest versions.  This slower and slower and waiting thing is getting continuously worse all the time and very annoying.   If anyone has any ideas I am open to suggestions to find a solution.  Thanks much.

Seems we have a lot of people with simular problems but a lot of different combonations.  Cleaning caches, reseting Pram, taking almost everything out of login items even using a program to defrag the unit,  (mine is not a SSD drive), making sure all apps etc. are up to date and are ML ok etc. I have all done.  I even had the unit tested by the Gen. Bar guys to make sure the hardware was ok including the drive even though I was pretty sure it was as I did not have this problem before ML.  All checked out fine.  I have not in the past had any problem with Time Machine backups but??????????   I only use a usb external and plug it in when I want to do a back up so it is not doing the backup thing all the time.  I have thought of doing the erase and clean install  which will be a huge amount of work but I have read many postings saying they have done that and it did not solve the problem so reluctant to do that if in the end I will spend two days for nothing?   Could go back to SL or Lion as I have bootable backups but why should I have to do this on a year old MBP to make it work properly?  Seems there ought to be a solution on this but Apple does not seem to have one?  As I said in my original post all seemed good for the first month of ML then it began going down hill and has continued to ever since.  I did notice last night that something strange seemed to help for a little while.  I loged out of the unit as I have auto login and when I relogged in all seemed much quicker and better but today it has started to slow down again?   I know everyone with this problem would like a solution!

  • Macbook pro has slowed considerably and spinning beach ball appears lots

My Macbook pro has slowed considerably and spinning beach ball appears lots recently.
After I installed 10.5.7 it started happening. When I open anything including system prefs and apple apps the ball appears. I'm on 10.5.8 and it seems to be either as slow or slower. Startup is a bit faster now, but it'll go to the beach ball before I even do anything remotely intensive on the system.
My computer is almost 3 years old but I don't install any weird software on it and have 30% of my system disk free. I'm an audio guy and use logic, pro tools and generally keep my computer clean.
I've tried starting another user account to check if its my original user that has the issue, but thats just as slow too.
    Please help...
    Thanks
Oh yeah, I repaired disk permissions too but it hasn't seemed to have changed anything

    Thanks for the reply Dale.
I have just tried that and Disk Utility said my MAc HD appears to be ok....????
So I don't really understand what else I can do...
I tried using Onyx a couple of months ago but it seemed to make things worse and more temperamental.
If there is a next level of solutions I could try it would be much appreciated.
This is what appears when I verify or repair the permissions... I doesn't change if I repair them though.....

  • IMac bootup issues and spinning beach ball of death.

    Hello Hello.
So I was recently given a brand new iMac 27inch by Apple, due to the death of my 2008 24inch iMac. Everything has been going great with it until today. I restarted it at some point this afternoon, and ever since then it has been acting quite strange. First thing i've noticed is that when I boot it up, when it gets to the white screen with the gray apple logo and the spinning thing, there is now a transparent rounded rectangle bar at the bottom of the screen for a minute or so...which was never the case before. Then, if it decides to proceed to OSX (sometimes it wont), the beach ball of death never stops spinning, which of course means i can do pretty much nothing. On top of that, it will not connect to the internet...my Macbook Pro connects fine to the wifi, so I know it's not my service. Bottom line, I have no idea what is going on. I've had it only for a couple of months, and haven't really had any problems until now. I'm hoping I'll just wake up in the morning and everything will be back to normal...
    Any ideas?
    Thanks for yer time
    IAN

I was able to get 'places' working on my Mac Pro by opening a library I created on my Macbook Pro (no crashing experienced in that install from the start) that contained a single geotagged image. The function works fine even after deleting the image, it just seemed to need the location data to get it kicking. I was creating a new library (since started as a trial) and was not upgrading an version 2 library.
There is obviously a bug here that needs addressing though.

  • IMac 24 C2D freezing, beach ball, pinwheel

    Hello wonderful user community!
I am helping my wife with this issue, she's never posted on the ASC before.
In the last two weeks my iMac has started behaving strangely.   It doesn't seem to matter whether running Spotify, Chrome, Firefox, or other applications, I will get beach balls, seemingly at random intervals.  If watching a video on Youtube or Netflix, the picture will freeze the but the audio will continue.  You can't Force Quit or make any commands in other applications, so it seems to be system wide.  If someone is playing a video from my hard drive from the LAN, their video playback will freeze.  After 15 secs to a minute or more, the machine will resume normal operation.
    What I've tried:
The OS was installed less than a year ago from 10.6 disk and updated to OS 10.6.8 using Combo Updater.
    Disk Repair Permisions
Disk Repair (boot from external drive)
    reset PRAM
Take to Genius Desk at Apple store (results inconclusive, no hardware issues)
Activity Monitor shows no app in particular hanging
I'm about to cut and run on this thing, put it on Craigslist, and move on.
Any light shed on this would be incredibly helpful.  I work from this iMac while my daughter watches videos on a 2nd monitor throughout the day.  At night it's our TV and we watch movies on it.  Needless to say it's an integral part of our lifestyle.

Another clue:  When watching a DVD disc, there are no freezes. This is the ONLY time we don't experience the 15 minute freeze cycle.  Starting to think the harddrive is failing...
If you suspect the HD is failing then run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode , it is wise to run the test 2-3 times to be sure. If it  picks up any error codes then you should plan on visiting an Apple Store or AASP to get it fixed and the codes interpreted. Apple does not publish what codes are interpreted as however some will give you a good idea. For example if it has HDD in it then you know the error is related to the HD however you don't know if it's the drive itself or it possible it could be  fan sensor for the HD, this is why it's smart to take it in.

  • Older iMac giving me constant beach ball

    Hi all,
I've got a semi-retired 2006 Intel Core2Duo 21" iMac.  I say semi-retired because two years ago I took it from being my primary workhorse to my TV server - hooked the mini-DVI to the TV to act as my primary TV service.
Last week, I started getting the spinning beach ball after every couple of commands, so I tried restarting the computer.  I restarted it and the entire OSX was corrupted and needed to be reinstalled.  So I reinstalled with the latest edition of Snow Leopard and the computer is starting to do it again.  After every couple of clicks, I get about a 30 second wait and a spinning beach ball.  There is now a fresh install of OS X on the computer, and all my TV goes through either iTunes or Safari, so except for Flash and Silverlight, there are no other plugins or errant software.  The system is clean.
Does anyone have any ideas?  I recognize this computer is older and has been very heavily used since day one, but I'm not ready to write it off yet if I don't have to.
    Thanks!!

Darn, I was hoping you wouldn't say that, but a dying hard drive is what I was thinking too
Any idea what the Apple Genius Bar would charge to replace/diagnose the problem?  Have to decide if it is worth it to repair or simply replace with a Mini.

  • Versions and the Beach ball

Is there any way to get rid of the beach ball (and a hang lasting a couple of minutes sometimes), when a network user tries to open a document (in a network home folder, or AFP share) in applications with Versions support (e.g. TextEdit, Pixelmator…)?
We have a simple network setup: Mac mini server with Lion Server 10.7 (and all the recent updates) and various iMacs all running Lion (with all the recent updates as well). Server is correctly configured and running DNS, OD master, AFP, Web server (+ FTP, MySQL and stuff). Nothing gets exposed to the outside world, the server sits behind an Airport Extreme, which provides DHCP, NAT and Firewall. All users have their home folders on the server, some of them were migrated from an older 10.6.8 server, some users are brand new (no difference between them when it comes to the hang…).
Fortunately most people use LibreOffice and other applications, where this problem doesn't come up, but if you occasionally open up TextEdit…
    BTW, Preview works just fine…

Are you doing a complete rebuild, i.e. all options checked?  If so then it may take a long time.  I've not done a complete rebuild, just options #1,2 and 6.  On a library with only 2,100 photos it takes less than a minute.
I'm sure there are users here that have done a complete rebuild with libraries as large as yours that may come forward and indicate what to expect.

  • IMac late 2009 gives beach ball. All test return normal.

I have an iMac late 2009 model 27 inch. update to Mavericks (10.9.1)
Returning from holiday, I found my iMac dead slow, with spinng beach balls on every click. Until now I have done ....
Create new user account, logged in as this new user.
    reset PRAM / NVRAM
    boot up in safe mode
boot up in recovery mode, perform disk test. (all normal)
I managed to copy the most important directories to an external storage. Got more and more read/write errors.
    iMac had become unusable slow.
Made bootable USB stick, used this to boot and did a complete HD erase.
    Clean installed Maverick.
    Problem still persist.
Performed AHT (Apple Hardware Test) in extented mode. No error founds.
Performed Black Magic Disktest, around 110 MB/s seems normal speed.
After reboot, the first application start up fast (which gives me hope) but starting the second app, takes several minutes with this spinning beach ball.
Anyone here having simular problems or otherwise can point me to a solution?

Thanks for you advise. I did a clean install, so without any third party software like Trusteer Rapport.
On you advice I ran EtreCheck. This is the result:

  • Video performe horribley both with QT and youtube, beach ball ****.

I have no idea why but since the last update all my QT movies play back about only 4 secs of video, then i hear sound but the picture gets stuck, then on YouTube i get nothing but the beach-ball, i have to force quit firefox etc etc
    Anyone else experiencing this?
I have over 120GB free on my drive, a external 750GB media drive for iPhoto docs and a 320GB Sata to USB 2.5" drive, all worked perfect until the last update.

    i have some problems too.
Expecially for some youtube videos or someother flash/director streaming files.
Actually Director/Shockware plugin works horrible on new Mac intel models.
I try to install also version 10 of this plug in (it's a beta) but nothing new.
For some videos it's possible to watch them but it's not possible to forward the timeline or put it in full screen mode. this occurs very rarely on YouTube but very often on other streaming video sites.
The only remedy if you need to watch them is restarting Safari or Firefox under Rosetta, doing so flash/director plugins are loaded in PPC instead of Intel.
It's not funny but it works.
    only a note:
as i remember , CNN uses Windows Media Video codecs in their streams so it's better you install
WindowsMedia component (it's free) from Microsoft Mac site (www.mactopia.com or microsoft.com/mac)

  • Selecting apps and the Beach Ball

Select an application to start it up from the desktop or the Applications fiolder, and the spinning beach ball appears. Nothing else occurs (no app lanched). If I then select " anything" from the Dock ( an application, a folder, etc), the beach ball vanishes, and then selecting an application will launch it.

I'm having the same problem, when I open apps, beach ball, I go to a different app no beach ball but then when I try to do something on said app, beach ball!
