IMac always auto detects for external monitors after waking from sleep or from display off

I've got a Dell 24" monitor (2408WFP) plugged into my mid 2011 iMac via DVI cord and thunderbolt attachment. Things work fine.
When I need to leave my computer, I usually turn the displays off using the shortcut keys: CTRL + SHIFT + EJECT
This works perfectly and both displays go black. However, when I return to my computer and reactivate the iMac, the iMac display will turn blue as if I have just plugged in a new monitor even the external monitor is still plugged in. It usually flashes blue twice before displaying the password prompt. I can usually just log back in as normal. I've never had this happen before using Snow Leopard. It's annoying but strange.
However, even more strange is that sometimes when returning to the desktop, the iMac will do the auto detect display thing and then when I log back in, the external display just shows static as if there is no signal. I've checked the cable a million times and everything is as tight as tight can be and both ends are plugged in properly. Unplugging the displayport adapter from the iMac and then reattaching it restores the desktop on the secondary display although sometimes, it results in the secondary display showing a gray background picture instead of my normal picture. Replugging the secondary display seems to fix that too although sometimes it doesn't.
Why is this happening?
- Problem with the adapter?
- Problem with the DVI cable I'm using?
- Compatibility issues with my external monitor?
I need to stress the point that this has never happened before with Snow Leopard.
If I am the only one experiencing this then I suppose it may be an issue with the iMac or adapter or even the cable. But if anyone else can shed light on this problem, I'd really appreciate it.

Hi Micheal,
I've been experiencing the exact same issue with my new iMac I just bought.  I bought it refurb so I wasn't sure if it was a defect with the hardware or not.  Since I'm not the only one I will asume it's not for now.
Setup:
- iMac 27-inch 3.4GHz (Release May 2011)
- Dell 2709W external monitor
- Hooked in with mini display port to DVI adapter
- Lion 10.7.3 all up to date to this day
From what I've been able to gather the issue presents itself only when my Dell 2709W enters "Power Save Mode" after I do CTRL + SHIFT + EJECT or when the diplays simply goes to sleep by themselves.
Although if I hit that combination and the displays goes to sleep but I don't wait long enough for my Dell monitor to actually "Power Save Mode" (wait like 2 sec) then touch the keyboard then the 2 displays (iMac and Dell) resumes from sleep without the issue presenting itself.
I'm tempted to buy the mini-display port to HDMI just to see if the issue is still present with that adapter.  If I do I'll update my post with the outcome.
If anyone else has any info to help with this issue it would be greatly appreciated.  It's very annoying when you resume from sleep and you find all of your windows that where opened on the external display before sleep squeezed into your main display (iMac).
Thanks!

  • My iMac won't automatically connect to wifi after waking from sleep mode

After dowloading the newest software update and performing a firmware update for my Airport router, my Imac won't connect to Wifi automatically after waking from sleep mode

Please re-download and install the 10.7.3 update. You can locate it at 10.7.3 (Client Combo). Follow the on-screen instructions. Then test it out, if you still have the same problem please restart, when you hear the startup tone hold down the Option Key and then choose the Recovery Partition. Then open Disk Utilities and Repair Disk Permissions 2x. Then exit DU, restart normally and re-test.

  • Hangs for 45 secs after waking from sleep.

I don't know if this is an OS thing or a Hardware thing.
I started having this problem over a year ago. I will take up my computer, login (I have it prompt for password every time). I will start working on it no problem. Within the first 5 minutes of use after waking up, it locks up with nothing working except I can use the mouse to flip between applications that are running but none of the applications will work. I can use the finder to go to the spotight search and try to load "Activity Monitor" to see what is sucking up all the resources but it won't actually search the disk or load activity monitor until after the 45-second wait after which all of my clicking and moving around that was stored up is executed and my computer flips around to catch up.
I have tried running with Activity Monitor up 24/7 to see what happens when it locks up and there is nothing indicating high memory or CPU usage.
I thought perhaps it was my spinning HD so I purchased a solid state drive and moved to that and it still happens.
It happens most often with Chrome, Minecraft (Java), or any Microsoft Office 2011 product loading within the first 5 minutes after sleep. But it's not all the time when using these products and it is not ever immediately after waking up, it's always within 5 minutes.
I have head something about "deep sleep" on the Macs and perhaps that is it, but I don't know, it sounds like a different problem.

First off, I'd suggest starting up in Recovery Mode and doing a Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions on Disk Utility to ensure the drive has no issues.
Next, try starting up in Safe Mode to have the system purge many of the system caches. Corruption there may be causing such a slowdown. Plus it will allow you to gauge whether some third-party software component is guilty. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
Lastly, if satisfaction is yet unattainable, I'd install OnyX and use that to purge ALL user/app/system caches as well as rebuild Spotlight's index. http://www.titanium.free.fr/downloadonyx.php

...but I can easily connect it manually. I read the FAQ on this subject and followed the resetting steps in system preferences/network (the procedure was specific for Intel iMacs-but I did it anyway)
It did not help. The flaw just occurred a couple of days ago, after a year of flawless operation Please help.

Solved! I trashed the internet connect preference in the library, and it worked!

Yeah, I'm having the same exact problem - It seems that the thunderbolt minidisplay port is only able to output the analog VGA signal, not the digital signal to support DVI and HDMI. This is a bug that came up after installing 10.7.1. I bought my macbook air with 10.7 on it, upgraded it to 10.7.1 as soon as I got it, so I have never been able to use hdmi or dvi with my macbook air. This is an extremely frustrating problem for me, I used HDMI on a daily basis with my PC. I have spent many hours at the genius bar running diagnostic tests so Apple can get as much information as possible to create a fix for this problem. I have been emailing tech support for 3 or so weeks now, they keep saying that they are working on a fix and it should be out soon, but 10.7.2 has come and gone and I still have no HDMI functionality with my MacBook Air!

My Macbook pro will not connect to an external monitor after moving it. It has been running on this same monitor for 8 months. I switched to a new Desk last night, after hooking it up, the Macbook Pro would not even detect the external monitor. It was only showing the Macs monitor in Display. If nothing displays but you hear normal startup sounds, then it's possible this is a video issue, and you should take it to an Apple store or AASP.

  • What is the max resolution for external monitors from the intel hd 4000 graphics driver

What is the max resolution supported by the intel hd 4000 graphics driver found on the 13in MacBook Pro for EXTERNAL monitors?

OK so after doing much research... this seems to be the best workflow.
Bring HDV in to FCP as ProRes 422.
Edit show... add bells and whistles, etc.
    Export movie as ProRes 422.
Then for the client - ensure that they have latest version of Quicktime and download the Apple ProRes Quicktime Decoder (for mac or Windows). (It is assumed they have a decent computer to play back on.)
The client will then be able to play a movie encoded as proRes 422 and all will be happy.
As a back up a high resolution h264 file can't hurt.
Thanks for everyones input. We got there in the end.

I have a PowerBook G4 with a non-functioning monitor.  It used to work with an external monitor, but I reinstalled the OS, which cleared the display preferences and now when I restart it won't detect the external monitor. This means I can't use the computer anymore. How do I fix? I tried using the Command+F2 keyboard shortcut, but it doesnt' work.  It's possible that since I reinstalled the OS, it still needs to be set up, so there's only a welcome screen (but since I can't see it I'm not sure).

Same here on an older iMac since Lion. Thanks for the uncheck wake for network access tip though, it doesn't do it either in that case, I will leave it that way.

  • My macbook pro will not detect any external monitors

My macbook pro will not detect any external monitors, worked 'once' when connect to a TV.
Have read a lot of web comments, most not very usefull.

    Hi a,
Check the setting in Sys Prefs > Displays.
Try a different adapter and/or cable.

  • Disable/Override Auto-detect for displays

i have a mini serving as the head for my media center. if i plug it into the HDTV via a DVI->HDMI cable it works just fine. detects the HDTV display options perfectly.
but what i would like to do is plug it into my receiver, where all the rest of my audio and video can go as well. that way i just have one video out to the tv for all my sources.
the problem is that when i plug it into the receiver i get generic display options on the mac (none of the HDTV resolutions) and the receiver doesn't know what to do with them. nothing is passed back out to the TV.
various cables, resolutions, and third-party software for playing with video output options have been tried. i'm hoping that, if there is a way to disable auto-detect for displays, i can output 720P/1080i as such and the receiver will recognize it and send it out to the TV.
