With lion server you don't need a monitor and I figure why buy a mac mini when i could by a 27" imac and use it as a display and a mac mini running lion server.
I have been going over the scenarios and am trying to decide if I should buy the TB display or a second 27" imac. Eventually I will have 3 27" displays... but I want to run Lion Server off of one of the imacs... and use the display with the other imac.
do you know if it is possible to use the display of the imac for a mbp or another imac while running an operating system (lion Server) on the computer at the same time.
not sure if I made my self clear there or not.

Ryan as long as both the Mac Mini and iMac have Thunderbolt you could use the iMac as an external monitor for the Mac Mini. The current machines with Thunderbolt connections are 2011 iMacs, MacMini's, MacBook Air's & all MacBook Pros.

In the display settings on your computer uncheck "mirrored". This will put the displays in "extended" mode. In extended mode you can set the external display to its native resolution as well as drag windows from your computer to the external monitor. I assume that is what you mean when you say "split screen".

IMac and External Monitor

I have an early 2006 iMac 20" core duo 2.0ghz 2GB Ram.
I already have an external 17" monitor plugged in with the mini dvi adapter.
I have recently purchased a 32" Samsung TV, which has PC Input. This will be arriving shortly.
Is there any way for me to connect both the TV and the external monitor to the iMac? I would rather mirror the display to the TV and extend the desktop onto the 17" monitor.
If there is a way to output to both, but by a different way - i.e. not mirroring and displaying - this would be great.
I didn't know whether it was possible for me to use some sort of splitter. So a mini dvi to 2 vga's. Then vga to tv and monitor.

SLOW Imac and Activity Monitor won't work

My imac has slowed down and Safari keeps crashing and everything is slow. I tried to look in Activity monitor but when I try to get in it tells my that 'Activity monitor doesn't have to correct file permissions' and to fix it with Disk Utility, so I tried that but nothing. I have a 232 gb hard drive with 97 gb free. HELP, I am not very smart with computers so laments terms etc wud be great. thanks

Using older iMace as extra monitor

I currently am using a late 2012 21.5 in iMac with a 2.9 GHz Intel Core i5. I'm wondering if I can use an older iMac as an additional monitor or connect it somehow via sharing?

When I start it up I hear the bong and see the symbol spinning then the screen goes black from right to left the computer is running but I can't use it. I assume it's the graphic card. This could be problematic.
It will depend on what model of iMac you have.
You may want to post machine info.

Leave out the serial number.

Most of the iMac's have sometype of video output port on the back. You will problably need a converter.
The 'hollywood' industry has been making it more difficult to get video out over time to prevent copying.

Using iMac and Macbook at the same time (not as 2nd monitor)

Hi all,
So I have an iMac (2013) and a Macbook Air (2012). I do NOT want to get a Macbook Pro and an external monitor. Here's what I'd love to do:
If I have both computers up and running on my work table, I'd love to be able to transition between them as seemlessly as if the Macbook was a secondary monitor. However, I want to access the Macbook Air's harddrive and contents while doing so. Example: I have Skype running on only the Macbook Air, a call comes in, I want to be able to mouse over from the iMac and take the call. I also want to be able to drag and drop content between the two computers (without using AirDrop).
Ambitious, I know, but is this possible? My understanding is that Target Mode means that I'm only using the screen, not the actual computer, so I wouldn't be able to run seperate software on the 2 computers. And I'm not sure an ethernet connection is possible because the Macbook Air doesn't have one. Any WiFi software solutions?

I looked up different VGA adapters but the only options for this would be a usb-vga connection which doesn't work on macs. Can anyone tell me if this new Thunderbolt connection will work in some way? Using the Thunderbolt port attach a Mini-display to DVI so long as the Asus display is equipped and capable, otherwise Mini-display to VGA will also work. The Thunderbolt port is ahead devices which are not yet available to take advantage of the increased capacity in speed. Until the devices and connection cables are available, just use the port as a Mini-display port.

To solve this issue all I did was check to ensure that the file permissions were set as described by the earlier posts, followed by simply deleting the iTunes Library Genius.itdb file. Once the file was deleted I was able to open iTunes without difficulty. Note that I am running Windows 8. Hope this helps!

I use Final Cut Pro 7 right now and am thinking about buying the new 27" iMac with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4GB GDDR5 card. I have a 24" Apple Cinema Display with mini Display port cable. I also have one more Samsung display with DVI & HDMI. Can I connect both monitors to the iMac and be able to use one in FCP as a display monitor?

Maybe a device like the Targus USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Dual Video Adapter or StarTech USB 3.0 to HDMI an DVI Dual Monitor External Video Card Adapter would work?
