IMac and Firewire external HD not waking up

Hi,
Is there anyone here have an idea why an external HD (Seagate 200GB) plugged into a FW port stop responding after the computer went to sleep?
Finder stops responding and I see the color pinwheel, can't access "Macintosh HD". When I turn off the HD's power, the system's able to recover.
The HD enclosure has 2 FW ports and 1 USB port. It works well when I plug the HD onto the USB port.
I don't seem to notice this behavior on the old G4 PB that I had.
Thanks.

I have a similar problem. Whenever my Firewire HD is plugged in, my computer takes a long time to wake up, and a very long time to turn on.
What's worse: if my FW HD is plugged in and my computer goes to sleep, it kills my Wireless. Not in a fun manner either. To restore, I have to:
Shut down comptuper
Reboot with FW HD unplugged
Not too happy with this. I haven't tried USB yet, but I guess that's a pretty easy answer.

I have an IMAC and I'm running OSX 10.9.2.  I'd like to store my Aperture /IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive.  In addition, I'd like to partition the external hard drive so that Time Machine can use it to both back up my IMac and the external library drives.  Is this possible? Can I set up a RAID 5 format for redundancy?

I'd like to store my Aperture /IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive.
That is fine and recommended.. use the fastest disk you can afford.. ie Thunderbolt>USB3>FW800>USB2.
In addition, I'd like to partition the external hard drive so that Time Machine can use it to both back up my IMac and the external library drives.
Let me be clear.. you want to partition the one disk.. use it for TM and move your files to the external disk.. and then backup to the same disk.. You can do it.. but that is not a backup.. that is an experiment in how long you can get away with running files and backups on the same disk before you lose everything.. like Russian Roulette.. pull the trigger enough times and laws of probability will do you in.
You must have backups on a different disk .. otherwise it is pointless.
Can I set up a RAID 5 format for redundancy?
No.. you can buy special USB and Thunderbolt external drives that support RAID..
BUT that is still not a backup.. let me show why.. you make a silly move and corrupt your file in aperture.. it is not that rare.
Raid will corrupt all copies of the files.. it is replicated across all disks.
Delete a photo it is deleted across all disks.. you have no recovery.
Alway, always consider RAID system one disk.. backup onto another disk.. and if the photos or movies are at all important to you.. ie your family .. make another copy and store in a relatives house.. There is no such thing as too much redundancy.

  • Can time machine back up an imac and an external hard drive?

I currently back up my imac via time machine but to reduce space on my hard drive I want to move my itunes library onto an external hard drive. If i do this can time machine still back up my imac and the external hard drive with the itunes library on automatically?

yes, given enough space on the destination drive (your library may grow over time). also, the drive needs to be connected directly to your Mac.
you might want to make sure the drive is not excluded from TM backups by checking in system preferences > time machine > options.
also, as for moving your iTunes library, see this read for tips/instructions.

If you have a considerable photograph and/or movie collection you may want to consider off loading those to the EHD too. Here are Apple's article showing how handle iTunes & iPhoto libraries.

  • New aluminum iMac and firewire drive

My school recently placed an order for a lab of iMacs and found out yesterday that we will be getting the new model (20 inch).
We had been using old G4 towers with Final Cut Express and external firewire 400 drives.
Since the new iMac will only have a single firewire 400 port can anyone suggest our best options for capture/playback via firewire 400 and also using our existing firewire 400/USB 2.0 external drives? Is there a firewire 800 to 400 adapter that will allow us to use the faster port as a second 400 port?
Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

I think the adapter for converting FW800 to FW400 is the best option in your case. In my case, my iBook only has one FW400 port and I opted for a Belkin FW Hub to allow capture from my camera to my FW400 external HD. I've heard this is not ideal, but it works for me. Would love to get a new iMac one day.
I believe the reason FW hubs are not recommended is because you can end up splitting the bandwidth. Essentially you might end up with FW200 if two FW400 devices are hooked up to the hub. Anybody else know?

  • Firewire external writer not seen by Windows 7

I have Windows 7 x64 running very sweetly in my MacBook Pro 2.2 on a Kingston SSD 128 V series. I installed the X64 drivers from the SL disk as detailed elsewhere in this forum.
Everything is working except a Freecom LS Pro external DVD writer, when connected by firewire. Windows 7 simply doesn't see it. Not in Device Manager or anywhere. Fine connected USB.
The same LS Pro works fine with firewire in a Vista Bootcamp partition on my Mac Pro, and on the Mac partition on the MBP.
Firewire external hard drives work fine on the Windows 7 partition.
It looks like a missing driver for firewire DVD writer in Windows 7 bootcamp.
Will I have to wait for the imminent new Bootcamp release, or is there another solution?
    Anyone have the same problem?

I managed to work out why iTunes couldn't see the ext writer [I didn't check it in the drop down menu...]
So, although I didn't manage to get AIFF files written to the disc to work on my CD player... the situation is now resolved.

  • IMac And Firewire Solo - Power Problem

    Hi!
I got an iMac and a M-audio Firewire Solo audio interface. I wanted this interface to be powered by the current adaptor and NOT by the iMac.
M-audio says that if I plug it with a 6pin cable the computer will power the interface (not using the adaptor). So Can I avoid iMac to power the interface? I mean by stopping the firewire power or something..
    thanks!!!

The easiest way would probably be to put a pair of 6 pin to 4 pin adaptors (of opposite "genders") into the cable run, or to use a 6 pin to 4 pin cable with a single 4 to 6 pin adaptor on the end of it, vivajam. THis should cut the power supply from the Mac to the device.
http://www.granitedigital.com/catalog/pg20_firewiregenderadapters.htm seem to have the sort of thying you would need.

  • I have 2 IMacs and MacBook Pro- can not work on FCP simultaneously when my network ports are on (open). How do I go about changing this?

    Hi!
I have 2 IMacs and MacBook Pro and can not work simultaneously on FCP on all workstations when the network port is open. Can anyone help me on this?

Did you purchase Final Cut Pro from the Mac app store? Or install it from disk? If from disk, you may have installed it on all machines using the same serial number, and using all of them simultaneously violates the license agreement. If you purchase from the App store the licensing is different and that may not apply.

  • IPod and Firewire (I'm not even using Firewire but iPod is acting like i AM

I know this may sound strange, but whenever I plug my iPod into a USB cable (to charge or add songs) this message appears on the screen:
"Firewire connections are not supported. To transfer songs connect to the USB cable provided" "Press center to dismiss"
I can still charge it AND I'm using the USB cable they gave me with the 5th gen. iPod (which I assume is the USB2 cable or whatever).
I can't add my songs and it's making me really mad! Can anyone help?

If your ipod worked normally and then started doing this it may be that there is dirty or bent pins or something on the ipod or cable connectors. It's worth a try to check them out, maybe with a magnifying glass. If you have access to another 5G cable you could try that too, along with trying it on another computer (be careful if that computer has itunes on it however - it could wipe your ipod content if it works!).
If none of that works then you should go thru the 5 R's:

  • 27" iMac and two external displays -- using both TB ports best?

    Greetings to all.
Currently I have a 2011 Mac Mini to which is connected a 30" Dell display via a Dual Link DVI adapter, and another Dell 21" display via HDMI. I'm planning on getting the 27" iMac and want to check the best way to connect these two displays. While the 30" will still use the Dual Link DVI adapter, should I connect the 21" display via the iMac's second TB port, or via HDMI?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
The iMac hasn't got a HDMI port, so you will have to connect your second monitor to your Thunderbolt port, using a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter in order to be able to connect it to the computer

  • I downloaded lion on my imac and new icons are not in doc, help!

I downloaded Lion on my imac and nothing is new, there is no new icons in my doc. No launchpad etc.

The installer should have put an icon into the Dock and the Install Mac OS X Lion.app into /Applications. Save a copy somewhere else so you don't have to download it again, then run the Install Mac OS X Lion.app. The installation is a two-step process.
