IMac and HP 6940 Deskjet printer

I'm using an iMac 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo 4 GB RAM and an HP 6940 Deskjet printer. Recently the printer started working erratically: printer stalls frequently, takes way too long to print pages.  Driver is 4.0, no new one seems to be available. Suggestions?

"She was using the Safari browser, 7.0.5 and this has been happening since then.."
It could be malware.
Download the malware removal tool here >  The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide
If no malware was found, open System Preferences > Printers & Scanners then select the Print tab.
Click:  Open Print Queue...
Delete all print jobs.
Then restart the Mac. Turn off the printer. Wait about ten seconds then turn it back on.

Printing from web pages is excruciatingly slow since downloading most recent upgrades of Firefox Mozilla. I have a desktop iMac, OS 10.6.8, and an HP officejet printer 4500 G510n. The printer works fine with the Safari Browser and with woodprocessed files, but not with Firefox and web pages. Help please! It used to print fast with earlier versions of Firefox.

Hello and welcome to the Apple Discussions Forum.
I have hardly any experience with HP printers but since your posting has not been replied to yet I thought I'd offer some assistance.
With the printer status and ink levels working, it shows that you have a connection to the printer. So I would look at the issue being with the protocol being used for the print queue on the Mac.
Since you have XP and Vista working, I would check the printer queue configuration on either box. In XP, go to the Properties and select Ports. Click the Configure Port tab to view the connection. If you are using RAW, then this is known as HP Jetdirect-Socket on OS X. So if you are not sure what protocol was used before I would create another printer queue, this time selecting IP > HP Jetdirect-Socket. Then enter your IP address and select the K5400dn from the Print Using menu.
If this still fails to print then please reply. There may be limitations with adding the HP driver this way that I am not aware of. There may also be other driver options you can look at, such as HPIJS. If Greg Sahli reads this posting he has expert knowledge on this matter and will be able to offer some guidance.

  • CS5, New IMac and Epson R2400 = terrible prints

Please can anyone help.  I have a new I Mac running Mac OS X 10.6.4.  I have just purchased CS5 and I have an Epson R2400.  I cannot get a decent print despite spending hours trawling the internet for help and carrying out every suggestion under the sun.  Please can someone help before I throw out the €3000 worth of kit that is worse than useless outside.

  • Imac and Epson printer no longer connected even though wi fi fine

Help! we have a brill imac, and an Epson photo printer,  Epson PX730WD air printer) printer is showing as wi-fi fine, but when I go to print the imac is saying no printer found, even though all the details are there and it has worked fine for over a year! we are no tech wizards and are lost!!!!

I've got a wifi printer (Brother) that works absolutely fine and just randomly stops working via wifi, maybe 2 or 3 times a year. The only way I can get it back is to delete the printer and add it again - re-joining the network and adding the wifi network password again (all done through the control panel on the printer).
Just occasionally I have had to reset the printing system when a simple deletion and re-adding the printer hasn't worked:

  • IMac won't let me print on both sides using my hp D2400 printer

I just received my iMac and was trying to print on both sides using my hp D2400. But, on the option page, it won't let me choose "Print on both sides". Why? How do I fix it? Thanks!!

From the HP Support site, have you done the following, as you need to:
Install or update the HP software with Apple Software Update
Choose your connection type for steps to install HP software using Apple Software Update.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&dlc=en&docname=c03404580&lc=en #N187
    USB connection
Click the Apple menu ( ), and then click Software Update . Software Update checks for available updates and updates the database that your Mac uses to determine available printer software.
Click Show Details , select any available software updates, and then click Install .
NOTE: Install all available updates for best printer performance and functionality.
Turn on your printer, and then make sure that it has paper in the tray and that it is in a ready state.
Connect the USB cable to the printer and to the Mac. A print queue is automatically created for your printer. If the Mac already has current software for your printer, the print queue is created in the background.NOTE:If you are prompted to install any additional software for your printer, click Install , and then follow the instructions to complete the installation.
Click the Apple menu, and then click System Preferences .
Click Print & Scan , and then make sure that your printer is in the list of available devices. If your printer is not listed, click the plus sign ( ) at the bottom of the left pane, click the name of your USB printer, and then click Add .NOTE: Quit and restart any applications that were open before adding the printer to use the updated HP software features.
    Hope this helps

  • WinXP, iMac and MacBook network

    Hello.
I am making home network between iMac, macbook (OS X 10.5) and WinXP(pro) PC.
    PC is wired to router.
iMac and MacBook are connected to the same router via Air-Port.
So the problem is: iMac can browse files on PC, macs can browse files in each others folders, PC can browse files on iMac.
But I can't make macbook and PC to connect to each other. But they cam ping-pong by their IPs.
I googled a lot and read that forum but couldn't find any suggestions.
    Thanks for help.
    Andrej.

    There is some additional info.
iMac and MacBook can use printer connected to the PC.
Also i can connect to MacBook through SSH: macbookuser@macbookip. That is rather strange.

  • A new iMac and an Old Printer HP Deskjet 648c

We have a new iMac, intel duo running OSX10.4.7. The system only seems to see my printer as a 640C. I also cannot find the test print utility. So I have 2 questions
    1. How do I get this system to recognize my Hp Deskjet 648C printer and be able to print to it.
    2. Where is the test print utility these days?
Not a newbie here! I really have tried a lot of things before I am posting here. I checked at HP for drivers for 10.4.7 - don't seem to exist.
I tried to install from the original printer CD - won't install OS 9 based installer.
I tried to take the drivers off an old system, my Mac is smarter than me...
    Help!
    -Amy Cortez

We have a new iMac, intel duo running OSX10.4.7. The
system only seems to see my printer as a 640C. I also
cannot find the test print utility. So I have 2
    questions
    1. How do I get this system to recognize my Hp
Deskjet 648C printer and be able to print to it.
You can try using the HP supplied drivers here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=60402 &jumpid=regR1002USEN&os=219
but the driver is for 10.1.5 and 10.2. You've probably already gone here and seen the printer was discontinued, so HP won't release an updated driver.
    2. Where is the test print utility these days?
The Utility is available from the toolbar when the printer is added with its proprietary driver. The utility is here: /Library/Printers/hp/Utilities/.
If you don't need the Utility or some printer specific features, and it's working with the GIMP drivers, you can stay as is or upgrade to a printer that HP currently supports with a 10.4 driver.
    Hope this helps.

  • Deskjet 6940 not printing PFD's

I have one of the above attached directly to the PC via USB cable, the PC is winXP Business SP3.
When I try to print out a PDF document the printer makes a noise, I can see the job Spooling(then this disapears very quickly) then nothing.  After this attempt, when I get a print job out(not PDF) I get a blank page before the printed job.
All else is fine.  Could it be a Postscript problem?  I have the latest drivers installed, the properties ofthe PDF doc show me that it is avaliable to be printed, but just no job comes out.

    tamm421 wrote:
I cannot get my HP Deskjet 6940 to print. It will print out a test page, but not a file such as Word, or PDF. Any ideas?
Did you install through software update this week, the HP Printer Drivers v.2.11 for OS X? In the text file, /var/log/cups/error_log, is there any helpful information about failed prints?
Have your deleted your printer from preferences and reinstalled it? The 6940 series is still supported.
I would create an arbitrary folder name, let's call it HPprefs. With the Finder, navigate to your ~/Library/Preferences folder and look for the printer preferences that contain something like these ... yours may be different for the 6940.
    com.apple.print.custompresets.forprinter.hplaser.plist
    com.hp.print.psdriver.pde.plist
    com.hp.printerutility.plist
Highlight them and from a right button, choose copy these files. Then within the HPprefs folder, hold down the option key and choose move items here.
Now remove your printer from Print & Fax preference pane and set it up again. Try printing from Word or Preview again.

  • WPSM54G and Vista won't print to HP Deskjet 5150

At the risk of opening an old discussion, I could not find the answer in the archives here but most threads end in early 2008 so I assume that the problem has been resolved.  I have a Dell Studio 1737 with Vista (32bit), using a WPSM54G print server with a WRT54GS router. It will not print to a HP Deskjet 5150.  It will print if I connect the USB port directly to my laptop therefore it shouldn't be the driver.
Both my desktops print to the printer through the print server - they are XP based.  Both work wirelessly or connected.  It is unlikely it is the router or the print server.
When installing the software on the laptop using the Linksys CD it gives a long message "We did not find the correct printer driver on your system" and so on.  I have tried all suggestions such as using the original CD, downloading the driver from HP site, deleting all drivers and starting over.  It keeps stopping at this message.
I have tried the tech help lines for over 6 hours now and have had no luck, they simply put me in remote mode and check the router and print server settings and then promising to call back.  They have on occasion but no help.  Also charged me 39 dollars because they needed to check the router IP address which is no longer under warranty.  Glad to pay the dollars if it would solve the problem but it hasn't.  Is there a solution out there such as a firmware upgrade or installation CD upgrade or something so that the installation will work with Vista?
    Thanks for your patience.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If you are getting that error message on your Computer.. This means you dont have enuff permissions to make the changes on your Computer, make sure you have logged into your Computer as an Administration..
If still you are unable to make the changes on your Router... then i think you need to Uninstall and Re-install the Printer drivers on your Computer back again and then try to add the ports on your computer...
Or else once you uninstall the Printer Drivers on your Computer.... Go to control pannel and click on Printer... and under Printer windows under task you need to click on "Add Printer" and Select "Local Printer" and uncheck "Automatically Detect the Install the Printer" and click on Next... You will get 2 Options "Local Printer" or "Standard TCP/IP Port" so you need to click on Standard TCP/IP Port and click on Next...when prompted for the "Printer Name or IP address"type the IP address of your Printserver and click on Next... then you need to select "Custom" and clik on Settings and under Protocol select "LPR" and under LPR Name Type LP1 and check the box LPR Bytes counting enable and click on Next and when it prompted you to  select the Printer Driver then insert the Printer Driver CD and and install the Printer Drivers on  your Computer Manually...
Once done sucessfully... i think you should be able to print.

  • How do I uninstall Mavericks and recover Lion?  I have a brand new iMac and web pages stall or freeze since I installed Mavericks.  I can't get it to download software for my printer when I connect it.

I have a brand new iMac.  It was working fine until I downloaded Mavericks.  Now I have web pages that freeze while trying to load.  The blue in the address bar stalls and freezes.  If I try to load from page 1 to a later page, or reverse that, I also have the same problem.  I tried to connect my printer for the first time, and again, the blue progress bar froze.  Then I got the yellow  triangle telling me there was a connection problem.  My internet connection is via an Air Card as that is my only option where I live.  I packed up the whole new iMac and took it to my Air Card provider, where they also have very fast Wifi, and they had the same problem with Wifi.  I use my Air Card with my MacBook and it works JUST GREAT!  I really want to return to Lion.  HELP.

The only way to retutn to Lion is to format your drive (erase, lose all) and either:
    1. clone back the clone copy i hoep you have, or
    2. first backup your files, then format and install Lion again
But really, mavericks works great. You have a problem. Find out why. First, what unusual software do oyu have installed that may be conflicting with it? Virus, system modifiers, etc?  Second what OLD software do you have that might be the problem.  finally, you might need to do a re-install if something errored during install.

  • Printer Sharing with eMac, iMac, and iBook not working

Hello, everyone. I hope you guys can help me out with this:
I have an Epson Stylus CX4600 hooked up to my eMac via USB. My eMac prints fine with it. The eMac is getting its internet via an Ethernet wire going downstairs into my Linksys Router, which sends my Shaw internet to my iBook, my iMac, and my eMac.
I want to allow the iMac and iBook to access the printer over the network directly, so I can just print from those computers and have it come out the eMac printer.
I've looked at many articles on this. So far I've installed the drivers on all computers, plus they can all network to each other over File Sharing, so they are connected.
But I haven't been able to print yet. The most I've been able to do is get the files I try to print from the iBook and iMac to show up on the eMac, in its printer queue. Only it didn't show up for a LONG time. And when it did, the jobs automatically stopped and everytime I clicked start, it would automatically switch back to stopped again. The files would not print.
At this point, I want to get the iBook connected to it first. If I can do that, I'll try the iMac. But the iBook is first priority. I've tried making it connect to the Printer using IPP (IP Printing), and the result was... what I explained in the above paragraph. I also tried just ordinary Printer Sharing, but it said something close to this:
"Unable to locate eMac.local, Unknown host."
That hardly makes sense, because at that time I also tried getting the iBook connected to the eMac over File Sharing which worked. For some reason, the "eMac.local" and "iMac.local" files don't show up in my Network thing when I connect to them, or even when they're not connected. HOWEVER, I think they did at one point. I could swear I saw "eMac.local" and "iMac.local" in the Servers folder in the Network section of the iBook at one point. But it's no longer there.
Please help. I've described my problem as well as possible. What a long post. If there's any way to make my eMac, iMac, and iBook be able to print through my Epson Stylus CX4600 at any time directly, then I'll do it.
    Help!

Yes. I did say that my eMac, iMac, and iBook are all
connected to the internet and networked to each other
over the Linksys router. I believe the router is
still on factory settings because we never really
"set" or programmed anything with it.
Mac OS 9.2.2 on the iMac, Mac OS X 10.4.8 on the
    other two. IP addresses?
192.168.1.100 is what I would use to connect to the
    eMac from the other computers.
This is the eMac's IP, correct? Did you type it into Network, or was it assigned by the router's DHCP?
192.168.1.101 is what I would use to connect to the
    iBook from the other computers.
This is the iBook's IP, right? Again, fixed or DHCP?
192.168.1.102 is what I would use to connect to the
    iMac from the other computers.
    Same for this IP.
The iBook, as I've said, is wired. No wireless
    connections to speak of.
Okay. Now, if the router is handing out IP addresses via DHCP, what range was it configured for? My Linksys, for example, is configured to hand out IPs in the range 192.168.0.10 to 192.168.0.254. It has the IP 192.168.0.1, so the IPs 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.9 are available for me to hand out as fixed IPs. If I was to hand out 192.168.0.100 as a fixed IP, the router's DHCP server would have a potential problem, as it might hand out that address too, and only one device can have a particular IP address on a particular network. If your router is handing out 192.168.1.100, .101, and .102 via DHCP, you could and probably do have a conflict if you've got those addresses set up as fixed IPs. In particular, if you have anything else on the network, including Bonjour-enabled devices such as printers, you're likely to have a conflict.
Best way to resolve a conflict, if any:
1 set all the Macs to either DHCP, or if fixed IPs are required, to a fixed IP outside the range of the DHCP range on the router. (Or you could just turn off DHCP on the router.)
2 check the router to be sure that DHCP is set the way you want it, and the DHCP pool is what you think it is.
    3 shut down the Macs.
4 turn off the router, wait 30 seconds, turn it back on.
5 turn the Macs back on, one at a time.
On my Linksys, the way to set the DHCP pool is simple:
1 log into the router. (My router IP: 192.168.0.1. Yours would be 192.168.1.1.) Hit the 'Setup' tab. Verify the gateway IP. (Should be the router's IP. If it's not, something very strange is happening.) Verify the start of the DHCP pool. Verify that DHCP is on (or off, as you want). Verify the end of the DHCP pool. (My start is 192.168.0.10, and there are 245 IPs in the pool, so the end is 192.168.0.254. If I changed the number of IPs to 200, the end of the pool would be 192.168.0.209, and I'd be able to set the IPs 192.168.0.200 to 254 as fixed IPs if I wanted.) If your router allows for IPs to be reserved, you can set up reserved IPs for one or more of your Macs. (A reserved IP is an IP the router holds for a specific device. The network card in each computer has a specific MAC address; if that address is registered with the router, then every time that computer is turned on and connected it will get the IP that was reserved for it... so long as that IP is in the DHCP range and DHCP is turned on. Think of it as a fixed IP without your having to actually fix the IP.)

  • How can i use my old airport express with my new imac and wireless hp print

i just bought my first imac (intel) and a wireless hp printer. i now realize that a wireless connection between my imac and my printer needs a router.
i have an airport express base station, which is a few years old. I can't find my documentation, so i don't know its specifications.
how can i find out the specs of the airport express i have and whether i can use it now? it says that it is model a1084 100-240v~ 0.2a 50-60 hz.
does that tell any knowledgeable people out there about the specs? can i search the apple website by serial number and find the specs?

  • My printer (HP8500) is wi-fi connected to my imac and my macbook. works fine from macbook, but has stopped working on the imac--shows offline. How can I fix this? Thanks

I have an iMac and MacBook Pro, both running Snow Leopard at current maintenance levels. I have an HP8500 printer connected via wi-fi. All have been working well until just recently. Now, the iMac cannot communicate with the printer. The printer icon shows offline. The printer is still online to the MacBook. I suspect a related problem is that when I try to access files on the MacBook from the iMac, I get a message that they are unavailable, but re-clicking once or twice to re-try works and the files are accessible. The only problem is that I cannot modify them from the iMac, even though the sharing options are set for update capability.
Resetting the printer and re-booting the iMac don't help.

    Yosemite is a big problem.
I recommend you factory reset the TC and start over.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
Redo the setup from Yosemite.. it needs to be directly involved in the setup to remember anything.
Please use short names.. no spaces and pure alphanumeric. eg TCgen5 base station name. TCwifi as wireless name.
Set password WPA2 Personal security which is pure alphanumeric mixed case and numbers.
Please empty out all the old wireless names from your devices.. reboot them and rediscover the network.
If it still fails tell us.
