IMac and power failure, now new startup screen and abrupt shutoff
Had a power failure, iMac kept turning on and off, finally unplugged and after 8 hours, I try to start and I get a screen that has the apple logo and spinning load animation, but also a new bar that shows something is being worked on. It reaches the end and abruptly shuts off.
What version of OS X was your Mac running?

So yesterday I went to do some work on my laptop.
My laptop is from about 2005-2006 so it's pretty knackered. Everything was going just fine but then my Avast! Security software notified me saying "VIRUS DETECTED" so I tried to go on the avast application but it wouldn't open. I tried to open my browser but the icon just bounced and stopped and them nothing happened after! So i clicked on the apple sign and clicked shut down. Then the system wouldn't shut down. So i held down the power button causing it to shut itself off. The next day I opened the laptop and turned it on. It made the healthy turning on noise and I can hear the fan working perfectly fine. The startup screen is showing. This is an all grey screen with the Apple logo in the middle and a spinning circle in the middle, the circle has been spinning for over 10 minutes now and I do not know what to do. I use this laptop for literally everything and I cannot possibly afford to replace this . I am hearbroken as I know that there is a possibility that I will no longer be able to use this laptop.
I would be extremely grateful if someone helped me as I am truly devastated. :(

Power failures with new Mac Pro. Urgent HELP!!
Hi, I just bought a Mac Pro 2.66, with two 20" viewsonic LCV monitors.
I am having a problem which happens already twice, after the computewr goes to sleep, when waking up it provoques a power failure in my apartment.
I first thought I was overloading the power outlet, since I had 2 more computers and peripherals all conected to the same one, so I changed and connected all my new peripherals and computer to an extension of an outlet from another room.
But this didn't solve the problem, it happened again yesterday, even when all the lights at my place where turned off. I live in a new building, so I don't think is a problem with the electricity circuit.
Does anyone know why this might be happening? What is weird to me is that is happening only when the computer wakes up, and not for example when turning it on.
I am thinking in buying a UPS, but this will not solve my problem now.
Also, how bad is for the computer when this happens?
Thanks

Mac Pro 2.66 Mac OS X (10.4.8)
Mac OS X (10.4.8)While your building may be new the electrical circuits may not be as you'd expect. Just because you connected things in another room does not mean they're on another circuit and another fuse. Unfortunately you're not the first one that's had this problem. It's not common but does happen.
So what happens with only one display on and no peripherals on (apart from your keyboard/mouse)?
By the way, do you mean the whole apartment goes out or just the one cirucit?
I am thinking in buying a UPS, but this will not solve my problem now.
It would if you went out and bought one now.
Also, how bad is for the computer when this happens?
With respect to hardware, there should be little chance of damage. However, on a software front it could do great damage. -
Hello,
I just back from the apple store with snow leopard excited to install it on my iMac about 2 hours ago to find my iMac frozen and it wouldnt let me hit the shut down button. So i just hit the power button on the mac and now it wont turn on. I tried to reinstall the OS but when i go to install it, it doesnt even show a hard drive to install it on.
I still have apple care for it, so does anyone have any suggestions? And, if it is a failed HD will the apple care replace that or would i be better off just buying a new iMac? My iMac is almost 2 years old, i bought it refurbished from apple.com
Thanks for any help in advance. If you have AppleCare, use what you paid extra for...
if it is a failed HD will the apple care replace that or would i be better off just buying a new iMac?
If it's covered, it will not cost you anything to get it repaired. So even if you decide to get a new iMac, you should get this one fixed.
You can try resetting PRAM
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
and if that does not help, resetting SMC
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
which is unplugging the iMac from power and reconnecting it following a precise procedure. When you reconnect it, try connecting it by itself to a wall outlet directly, instead of to a power strip with other devices. Disconnect all of your peripheral devices, except for your standard USB mouse and keyboard.
If that does not get the hard drive to be recognized and working properly, use that AppleCare. -
IMac won't boot past grey startup screen
It's a 2008 intel iMac running ML and bootcamp with Win7
It was working fine yesterday then I tried to start Aperture. It bounced on the dock but wouldn't open.
I tried a restart and it just gets to the grey startup screen with the Apple logo and spinner
I can start it from an external drive and I just tried to start from Bootcamp and it starts and runs fine
I have repaired and verified the disc and it says it is fine
Something is stopping it booting into ML
Any ideas?
AllanThanks, I already tried most of those. I followed the other suggestions ( already failed safe boot) and when it got to " take it to Apple" I just restored it from Time Machine and it all works perfectly.
It would have been nice to fugure out why it wouldnt boot, something must have been corrupted.
I dont know if its anything to do with it, but when I got the restored system booted up and downloaded all my emails, there was an email in my outbox with no recipient field filled in but a link to some iffy website in the message field.( Something like burnt gate)
I deleted it.
Maybe my first Mac virus?

ITunes update interrupted by power failure - now can't install
Gateway computer running Windows 7. I've run iTunes without issue for years. I had the bad luck of having an iTunes update interrupted by a power failure. I got error 193 when trying to run it afterwards. During subsequent attempts to reinstall, I also get error 7 (Apple Mobile Device Service failed to start).
Here's what I've tried so far:
- uninstalled iTunes in the proper order according to Apple help docs, rebooted, attempted to reinstall. Received error 7 twice during install, clicked to ignore both times. Received error 193.
- uninstalled again, searched for leftover files in various folders as spelled out by Apple doc. Reboot/install. Same problem.
- uninstalled again. Searched for and found stray registry key related to iTunes. Deleted it and attempted install. Same problerm.
- uninstalled again, and attempted to install as administrator (the login I'd been using the whole time was an admin login, but I was grasping at straws). Reboot/install. SAME PROBLEM.
I am beyond frustrated. Why won't this install work? What is the problem with the Apple Mobile Device Service? For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
If the advice above doesn't resolve things you could try this alternate version:
iTunes 12.1.0.71 for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) - itunes64setup.exe (2015-01-28)
which is a 64-bit installer for the 32-bit version of the core application, similar to previous 64-bit releases.
Or roll back to the previous build:
iTunes 12.0.1.26 for Windows (32-bit) - iTunesSetup.exe (2014-10-16)
iTunes 12.0.1.26 for Windows (64-bit) - iTunes64Setup.exe (2014-10-16)
If you still have issues with AMDS try the steps in Install missing components and/or review HT203188: How to restart the Apple Mobile Device Service (AMDS) on Windows.

Power Failure, now iMac failure
Hi there,
I have an early '09 iMac that has suffered though 5 back to back power outages and restores by the local utility. Now it won't boot into mavericks. I get the spinning gear until I shut the machine off. Attempts to boot into safe mode have the same result.
I've tried all the typical solutions listed on the net. I've tried booting with verbose mode on, and it seems to hang up around the time bluetooth drivers are loaded up. (forgive my PC language)
I can boot into single user mode and have checked the HDD, it checks out fine. I've also run disk utility in recovery mode and that also reports no problems. Ive also repaired permissions until no more are listed.
The next step I tried is an Lion install disk, unfortunately I can't downgrade my OS....
Then I tried a Time Machine restore, to no effect. Same with a new mavericks install from the apple in recovery mode.
Here's the weird thing, I had an old WinXP install on another partition that I installed when I was running Snow Leopard, and despite Maverick's not supporting XP, I was able to boot into XP normally, by pressing "C" on startup. This leads me to believe that the problem is software related, not hardware!
I guy I was talking to about this problem had mentioned something about a kernel rebuild or something? Does that sound familiar?
Is there any other option that I can try aside from a complete format and re-install? I have a ton of media on this HDD that isn't backed up, and I don't have access to another mac with a firewire port.
Help please!Have you tried booting while holding down the Option key?

Three songs out of 20 on album failed to download properly on my PC (windows XP) when connection was interrupted. Screen appeared prompting me to download incomplete songs. I did so, but three of the songs only play a few seconds even though they show full track times (ie 4:23). When I look to download the album or tracks again the messasge say all content has been downloaded. I downloaded entire album to my IPAD and it play fine. How can I repair the album on my PC? Thanx in advance ! MB
If your country's iTunes Store allows you to redownload purchased tracks, I'd delete your current copies of the dodgy tracks and try redownloading fresh copies. For instructions, see the following document:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Otherwise, I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the items that are not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the items, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" links next to the items. -
IMac g5 is stuck at white startup screen with apple logo & spinning circle
Hello,
i had a digital copy of os x leopard and i was trying to reinstall it, so i would double click on install mac os x, and it would tell me to restart, i would do this but nothing happened so i had to mount the disk again and double click install mac os x, and it told me to restart again. so i looked up how to install leopard from a dmg file, and it said to restore the dmg to the drive, so i went into disk utility and i put the source as the dmg, and the destination i dragged the imac hdd icon. it finished and i was gonna select the leopard file as my startup disk in system preferences, but that wouldnt run. i then noticed some of the letters were missing on the name of the icons in the dock, so i just restarted the computer, but it got stuck on the white screen. i tried lots of stuff like turning on while holding shift, but it didnt do anything, and i tried with cmd+s and that gave me some black command prompt where i typed/sbin/fsck -fy and that did some stuff and it said my drive was okay, but it still wont start up. What do i do?!?!im trying tiger right now, first i wanna reinstall tiger, than leopard next, you know, one problem at a time. i dunno maybe, heres the readme:
Read Before You Install
Mac OS X
Read this document before you install Mac OS X. It includes information about
supported computers, system requirements, and installing Mac OS X.
For more information about Mac OS X, visit this website:
For the latest information about using Mac OS X, connect to the Internet and open Mac
Help. To open Mac Help, click the Help menu in the Finder and choose Mac Help.
For information about the support available for this product, see the AppleCare
Software Services and Support Guide included with Mac OS X.
System requirements
You must have a Macintosh computer with:
• a PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
• a DVD drive
• built-in FireWire
• at least 256 MB of RAM
• a built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported
by your computer
• at least 3 GB of disk space available, or 4 GB if you install the developer tools
If you see a message in the Installer that you do not have enough disk space to install
Mac OS X, you can deselect items to save space. To deselect items, click Custom Install
in the Easy Install panel.
Updating your computer’s firmware
You may need to update your computer’s firmware. It’s best to update the firmware
before installing Mac OS X. If you haven’t started the Mac OS X Installer, check the
Apple Software Updates website to see if there are any firmware updates for your
computer:
If you don’t do this, you may see a message that you need to update your computer’s
firmware when you start the Installer. To update the firmware, you will need to quit the
Installer and restart your computer using your current startup disk, then check the
Software Updates website.
If you have problems with your computer after installing this version of Mac OS X, you
might need to update the firmware even though you did not see a message when you
installed the software. Check the Software Updates website for recent firmware updates
for your computer.
Starting installation
To start installing Mac OS X, insert the Mac OS X Install DVD and double-click the
Install Mac OS X icon:
You can also start installing Mac OS X by inserting the Install DVD and restarting your
computer while holding down the C key, or by selecting the Install DVD as your startup
disk using Startup Disk preferences.
Quitting the Installer

If you have already clicked Install, wait until installation finishes.
Advice about hardware compatibility
Installing on a Power Macintosh G3 (Blue and White)
If you have a Power Macintosh G3 (Blue and White) that came with an Apple SCSI hard
disk, do not choose UNIX File System (UFS) as the format for the destination disk.
Installing on a computer with a third-party SCSI card
If you have a third-party SCSI card installed in your computer and you cannot start up
Mac OS X, attach a disk drive or terminator to one of the card’s ports. If you continue
to have problems, try removing the card. Contact the manufacturer of the card for
more information about using the card with Mac OS X.
Installing on a computer with a third-party video card
If you have a third-party video card installed in your computer, you may need to
remove it before you install Mac OS X. Contact the manufacturer of the card for more
information about using the card with Mac OS X.
Advice about installing Mac OS X
Erasing and formatting your disk
When you install Mac OS X, you can erase the destination disk you select. In the “Select
a Destination” pane of the Installer, click the Options button. Select Erase and Install
then choose a format. In most cases, choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Important Do not choose UNIX File System (UFS) unless you need to work with this
format. If you choose UFS, Mac OS 9 and all Mac OS 9 applications must be installed on
a Mac OS Extended format disk to use them with the Classic environment.
To install Mac OS X on the same disk or disk partition as Mac OS 9, the disk must be in
Mac OS Extended format. If it isn’t, quit the Installer and back up your files, then
reformat the disk.
You can also partition your hard disk into several volumes before you install Mac OS X.
In the Installer, choose Utilities > Open Disk Utility and click Partition. Partitioning the
disk erases the entire disk, so be sure to back up your files first.
Installing optional software
Easy Install installs all the software you need to use Mac OS X, but does not install
some additional software. If you want to install this optional software or you don’t
want to install all the software installed using Easy Install, click Custom Install and
select the items you want to install. If you want to install this optional software later,
insert the Mac OS X Install DVD and double-click Optional Installs.
Locating the Installer log
When you install Mac OS X, the Installer saves a log of the installation. To see the log,
open Console (in /Applications/Utilities), click Logs, then click the triangle next to /
var/log and select install.log.
Reinstalling Mac OS X
To reinstall Mac OS X, insert the Mac OS X Install DVD and double-click the Install
Mac OS X icon, then follow the onscreen instructions. When you see the “Select a
Destination” pane, click Options to select how to install Mac OS X:
• Select “Archive and Install” to save your existing system files, user accounts and
their home folders, and existing network settings. The Installer saves files in a
folder named Previous System so that you can copy them to an appropriate location
later. You cannot start up your computer using the Previous System folder.
• Select “Erase and Install” to erase the destination volume and install a new copy of
Mac OS X. If you select this option, you will lose all your files and the software you
have installed on the destination volume, so you may want to back it up first. If you
select this option, you can choose the format for the volume. In most cases, choose
Mac OS Extended (Journaled) from the pop-up menu.
Setting up and connecting to the Internet
If you have an existing Internet service provider (ISP) and you’re installing Mac OS X for
the first time, you need to enter your Internet connection information when installation
finishes. Be sure to have the information available. If you have problems connecting to
the Internet, contact your ISP to make sure you have the correct information.
Advice about using Mac OS X
If you have problems starting up
If you cannot start up your computer, insert the Mac OS X Install DVD and restart your
computer while holding down the C key. Choose, Choose > Open Disk Utility, then
click First Aid to repair your disk.
If you have problems starting up your computer and you have devices connected to
your computer such as FireWire drives, USB printers, or external displays, try
disconnecting them before starting up again.
Upgrading your applications and other software
For best results with Mac OS X, look for versions of your applications that are built for
Mac OS X. Check the Mac OS X website for information about available applications:
If you cannot find Mac OS X versions, upgrade to the latest Mac OS 9 version to use
with the Mac OS X Classic environment. Check with the manufacturers for the latest
updates.
Using POP email accounts and On My Mac mailboxes in Tiger and Panther
If you have a shared home folder and you access a POP email account using Mail in
both Mac OS X Panther and Mac OS X Tiger, you will not see messages that you retrieve
in one version when you switch to the other.
As an alternative, you can deselect the option to remove copies from the server after
retrieving your messages. To change this option, open the Accounts pane of Mail
preferences and click Advanced.
You will not see messages saved in a mailbox on your computer when you switch from
one version to another. To avoid this problem, use separate home folders for each
version of Mac OS X.
Your IMAP account will synchronize automatically when you switch between Mail in
Tiger and Panther.

HI all - Help!
i Have a 2012 iMac.
Once or twice in the last few days it shut off on me randomly while I used it without warning. I thought it was a quick power outage but by the 3rd time it happened I looked at everything else plugged into the same power strip and it was staying powered. I plugged the imac directly into the outlet and same result. As well as plugging it into another outlet on another circuit. The issue is the computer - not the power its feeding from. We havent had any thunderstorms in the area for a week now so it wasnt caused by a storm. There were no tell-tail signs of strange happenings before this happened either. I DO use boot camp on it and PC game regularly but I have made sure the computer never overheats. So I couldn't have fried anything to the best of my knowledge.
Now here I am a few days later and i cant even get the computer to finish booting up before it will lose power. Any clue on how to fix this? I dont have apple care (Ive never once had an issue with an apple product) and I dont have the money to just go buy a new iMac. Has anyone had this issue before? It could be a more serious problem, but it kind of sounds like maybe a bad, loose or partially seated RAM module.
If you have upgraded or added RAM, do and test each of the following steps.
1. Check to make sure that all the modules are firmly seated in there slots.
2. Check for a bad module, install the modules one at a time in the top slot.
3. Install the original modules in the original slot that they came in.
If you did not upgraded or added RAM, you can do step 1 before making a Service Appointment.
1. Check to make sure that all the modules are firmly seated in there slots. -
2 questions: iMac after power failure & Lacie firewire drive keeps spooling
OK, my power blinked the other day and my iMac was off, but to get it to power back up, I had to take power completely away from it for a few seconds before it would respond to the power button at all.
Next, my Lacie external drive keeps spooling for a split second and stops for no reason. As far as I can tell, no programs should be accessing it. It does this about every 10 to 15 seconds. I can still access it when I want and it seems to be working fine, but I know the continuos spooling and stopping cannot be good for it. Any help you guys can give would be appreciated.Hi John
You don't say or show in your profile, but for the Intel iMac's first reset the SMC (System Management Controller) exactly following all the instructions in the link below.

Restart during Maverick download, computer now at startup screen
Downloading stalled about a quarter of the way through during my Maverick installation so I restarted my computer. After restarting, my computer entered the start up screen asking me to either reinstall, start from time machine, etc. I do not have my operating disk handy and do not have time machine set up. Is there any way to revert back to Lion to attempt a fresh installation of Maverick? I don't want to loose all my files as they are not backed up. I am running on a 2012 MacBookPro. Thanks in advance!
Hello,
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings. -
Apple TV power failure - now no connection
After powering up the Apple TV (ver 3) again (the cat had jumped on the plug box and powered it down!) it asked for date and time and hung for a while. Then I restarted it through the Apple TV menu and all was well until I realised my Mac Mini would not connect to it. The icon appeared in the menu bar but on trying to connect would just sit there for ages and eventually turn to a black color again with no connection. Have tried a restart again on ATV and Mini still no luck. My iPad will mirror to it though!
These error messages were received after the second round of restarts.
"An error occured (200500) while connecting to Airplay device Apple TV " and also
"An error occured (-6722) while connecting to Airplay device Apple TV "
