Imac and ram simple question

I am getting a new imac in a couple of days, i aready have the 4gb of ram. The question is should i install it first, before i even turn on the imac????
is there a site or directions that tells you how to install ram??

It's a pretty simple procedure. The HOW can't be explained any better than in your little manual.
You should run it for a few days (or at least hours) to make sure everything works properly, with the original RAM. Try everything, stress it a bit by running multiple programs, like an iTunes video podcast at the same time as playing a QuickTime HD movie trailer. Once you are satisfied everything is working fine, then upgrade the RAM.

  • Bus Speed and Ram Speed Question..thanks

I have recently purchased my first mac! I purchased a refurb but I noticed that the one I purchased has bus speed of 800mhz and the ram has 667mhz. (I did get a 320g hard drive vs a 250g and a 256mb graphics card vs a 128mb) The other one has bus speed of 1066mhz and ram speed has 800mhz. Am I going to notice a difference in the bus/ram speed difference or just stay with the one I purchased?
    thanks

I don't think you will notice a difference. Other system factors (such as video card, system CPU clock speed, amount of RAM installed, speed of hard drive, etc.) will most likely overwhelm any noticeable difference cause by the slower bus speed.
If the price of the refurb was good, you should keep it. I have an online Apple Store refurb myself, and although I know that the latest iMacs are a bit faster, I don't see how that extra speed will be of great benefit to me. I'm much happier with the money I saved on the refurb compared to a new iMac.

  • HDD and RAM Upgrade Questions...

I am thinking about upgrading my HDD and memory. My computer is a Qosmio X870-BT3G23. HDD is about 1TB and also have 12GB RAM. I am not sure how to upgrade my RAM as I heard the other 2 memory slots are not user accessable. How would I go about upgrading HDD and transfer all my stuff over? I think my computer has slots for 2 HDDs, but not sure... Thoughts on both HDD and RAM upgrade appreciated
    Qosmio X870-BT3G23

Skeet, here are the SPECIFICATIONS for your machine if you have not seen them.  And on pages 44-53 of your User's Guide is a very thorough description of the adding memory process. As far as transferring files are concerned, at the Start screen, type Easy Transfer, hit Enter and follow instructions.
The specifications indicate you can have 16GB memory in the two accessible memory slots without concerning yourself about the 2 hidden slots. I personally can't imagine why anyone could need more than 16GB memory and 1TB HDD but, of course, that's your call.

  • SMS - iMac and Yosemite Requirements Question

A question about requirements for SMS....
    iPhone running on 8.1.2
    2010 iMac running on 10.10.1
    2007 iMac running on 10.10.1
2012 Macbook Air also running on 10.10.1
SMS works fine on the Macbook Air (check)
SMS does NOT work on the 2010 iMac
SMS DOES work on the 2007 iMac
What is confusing to  me is I just went though about 2 hours with Apple support.  They discovered that the reason SMS is NOT working on the 2010 iMac is that under system information you see this:
    BluetoothLow Energy Supported: No
    Handoff Supported: No
    Instand Hotspot Supported: No
Under the Macbook air, all these fields are YES.
Now here is the confusing thing...
On the iMac 2007, they are all set to NO, but SMS works fine!
    So, my question is...
What are the true requirements to have SMS work correctly?
You need IOS 8 and Yosemite
You need a specific piece of hardware?
Support told me that the 2007 iMac should NOT be working because the Bluetooth fields are set to NO, but it does!
Any clarification in this would be appreciated.
And sorry this is so long!

  • Help Please IMac and macbook pro Question

I brought my daughters Imac home for my husband and I to use. We bought her a macbook pro for college.  Her laptop is saying something about not recognizing her informatin because she was using the imac. Does anyone know what I need to do to disconnect her from the Imac so her laptop will work better?

I think you or her will have to call Apple, should be free 90 phone support on the new one.

  • Selling my iMac and have multiple questions

I am selling my imac with applecare still on it. First off, how do i transfer applecare? I see you can in the terms and conditons but it is kind of hard to understand. what exactly do i need to email to [email protected]? Second, I have Mountain Lion installed on my computer, but you get updates and such through the app store. Is the OS tied in any way to the apple id I purchased it with? Like will the new buyer be able to update and never see my apple id show up or need it? And lastly, how to I go about preparing the hard drive for a new owner? i.e. wipe all data, writing over it, not sure what the best option is here, then how to get mountain lion back on there as new computer. Thanks.

See > How To Prepare a Mac For Sale
and/or > MacTalk - Preparing Your Old Mac for Sale
As for installing an OS X, install the original OS X that came on the iMac as per the above article's and let the new owner thru Setup Assistant establish a new ID and personal account for buying App's and Upgrades.

  • JSP and JavaBean simple question, pls help

    Hello,
I am new to JSP. I just installed Sun Java Studio Enterprise 8 to create a JSP project. I created a jsp file and java class file in the same project. the class file is in default package. I use <jsp:useBean id="date" class="DateFormatBean"/> in jsp file to call the java class. When I run the jsp page I got the error:
    cannot resolve symbol
    symbol : class DateFormateBean
if I add a package in the class file, I got the error: package com.mycom.projsp does not exist.
Also I tried to add a jar file into the library and tried to import it in my jsp page, I also got package doesn't exist error.
I know I need to set the classpath and I did it, but still got the error. Could someone help me out? Do I miss some settings? I am using Tomcat.
    Thanks in advance!

i'm not familiar with Java Studio Enterprise 8 so i'm not sure how it is organizing its project. However, i know tomcat...and if for test purposes you take your jsp file and put it in $TOMCAT_HOME/webapps/ROOT and your class file and put it in $TOMCAT_HOME/webapps/ROOT/WEB-INF/classes, things should work out. perhaps the web app isn't being organized properly in your tool.
    hope that helps.

  • FileVault and TimeMachine simple question

I have a mid-2009 15" MBP running Mavericks, with an external TimeMachine volume.
I recently turned on FileVault. Everything seems to be working.
What I can't figure out and can't find, is whether the TM volume was also encrypted at the same time.
Obviously if it's not, this is not a good thing, and I'd want to encrypt it as well.
If it's not, then, can I tell FileVault to do it, and how do I do that?
If you can point me at a relevant bulletin I will be happy.
    TIA

    It wasn't.

  • Simple question: I placed a document in iCoud on my iMac and it appeared on my iOS devices. If I change it on my iPad it changes on my iMac. Now, how do I change it and save it on my iMac so it automatically changes on my iOS devices?

Simple question: I placed a document in iCoud on my iMac and it appeared on my iOS devices.
If I change it on my iPad it changes on my iMac.
Now, how do I change it and save it on my iMac so it automatically changes on my iOS devices?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
I have seen previous versions mentioned in a pop up message before on iCloud.com, but I'm not really sure at all how it would help, as I couldn't get it to do anything.
The best advice I have at this time is to back up your work on your iOS device by regularly saving it to iTunes, if anything goes wrong you can then either load it into the numbers app again on the device or recover it via iTunes on your computer.
My syncs are immediate, I never get chance to see if it works in the background, sorry.

  • IBook vs. iMac, and Airport Questions

    Hi everybody,
After the announcement of the new iMac, I am seriously considering buying an iMac. However, I have a few questions, is the G5 alot more powerful than the G4? because the .48 Ghz difference, as a PC user, doesn't mean that much to me. I am a teenager, I do enjoy my games, but also want something that I can be productive on. I make web sites and do graphic editing with photoshop. However, I do not have the funds to spring for a powerbook or powermac, so I have the choice of the iBook or the iMac. I need to know what would be more useful for me, I do not need too much portability, but does the portability outweigh the extra .48 ghz, or is that .48 Ghz actually a significant difference? And my last question is: Is the wireless card in both computers compatible with any wireless router, or only an apple one?
P.S. based on my computer listed below, you can see I am due for an upgrade
    Thanks,
    Myrdog

I am the proud owner of an iMac G5 and an iBook G4 and I can tell you that the iBook G4 is a very sturdy and reliable computer. In terms of power, the iBook G4 is a bit limited on RAM specs if you are working with Adobe Creative Suite, for example, and needed to open several apps at once. Or if you are editing video; in that case the iBook works fine but there can be some problems because the graphics card in the iBook is much less powerful than the iMac's graphics card. One more thing about the new iMac G5: it uses DDR2 533 SDRAM, which is faster per megabyte/gigabyte. You will pay a lot for maxing out RAM though.
Either choice would be a good one; it really depends on your budget and what you want to do with it. I use my iBook to do web design with Macromedia Studio 8, and the programs run quite well. For most purposes, the iBook shines.

  • Workflow question - IMAC and MacPro combination

    Hi
QUESTION: what is the simplest workflow to pass an FCP project created on a laptop in the field to the home base desktop?
BACKGROUND: FCP allows a licensed user to have FCP installed on a desktop and a laptop - as long as only one is hooked to the internet. I've used this set up to capture footage on the laptop in the field and do some simple editing. Right now, I don't have enough Gigabytes on the laptop to store hi-def files. So I just purchased a G-TECH 200GB mini hard-drive, which works slick with the laptop.
When I'm on the road, shooting, I want the ability to do some editing before I get back to home base. I can do that with the laptop and mini setup. However, I'm not sure how to set up the FCP video file structure on the IMAC and LAPTOP so that I can pass an FCP project to the IMAC and have it fetch the project without getting 100 error message that needed footage, files etc.. is offline.
I'm thinking about firewire chaining my LaCie hard drives AND the G-Tech and then setting the video structure for FCP exactly the same on both the IMAC and Laptop. I would think that the laptop - when in the field - will not find the LaCie's and will dump everything and retrieve from the G-TECH mini hard-drive. Then, when at home, I pass the laptop FCP project to the Imac (with the mini now on the IMAC hard-drive chain).
That seems like a work-around. Is there a correct and standard workflow for this situation?

    starinova wrote:

More like as long as only one is used at a time.
Anyway, When you capture FCP should store all your footage files in a folder that has the same name as the project. This folder will be inside Capture Scratch, and Capture Scratch's location is set in System Settings in the Final Cut Pro menu.
When you move from system 1 to system 2 just copy that folder (the one inside Capture Scratch, the one named for your project) from system 1's Capture Scratch folder to system 2's Capture Scratch folder. Obviously copy the .fcp project file too.
FCP might launch and say it can't find your 100 media files because the path to the media has changed. This is no problem, just point it to the first file and it should find the rest.

  • 10.3.5 sluggish on my iMac (and some other newbie questions)...

I just purchased an iMac, and am brand-new to Macs. I can do anything on a PC, and actually do PC tech support for a living, so you can imagine that I feel completely ridiculous asking some of these questions, but here goes:
    1. How do I copy and paste? Ctrl+C does not work.... surely there is another alternative?
    2. Is there a way I can download OE for Mac? I know Microsoft no longer offers downloads or support, but if there is another place I could find ol'familiar Outlook Express, that would be fantastic.
    3. My browser (either IE or Safari) is not completely maximized. There's the area below, and an area to the side with some icons as well... is this the maximum size of the browser, or...?
    4. Right now I'm running OS 10.3.5, which seems a bit sluggish. It came installed. I also have the discs for 8.6, and if it will make the system run better, I'll definitely ''downgrade.'' How would I do this? Do I have to ''reformat'' or anything like that?
    5. Are there other tweaks, sort of like MSCONFIG, that will help speed up my system in general?
    Here are my system stats:
iMac (Grape!), 333MHz, 6GB Harddrive, 196 MB RAM...
    It's a G3 CRT, I think (if that matters).
Any help would be so much appreciated!

    Hello Tiffany,
First of all, Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
In regards to your #4, I would just suggest running Software Update (after upgrading the RAM memory if possible) and upgrading to the latest version of 10.3 that should be offered to you, ie. 10.3.9). As the other posters have suggested above you should upgrade your RAM to at least 256 MB. With any updates to system software, remember to Repair Permissions from Disk Utility found at HD/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility before and after the update.
There are many "tweaks" and troubleshooting information for OS X that you can perform to get the best from your OS and machine.
Some great information can be found @:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/faqs.html
A great tip, as your machine has a very small amount of Disk space is to run a little app called Delocalizer that will free up alot of space taken from Foriegn language files. The link to it can be found in Dr. Smoke's FAQ for "Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk".
    hope that helps some,

  • Refurb imac and questions

I am going to get a referb imac for $850. Here are the specs
    - 17-inch widescreen LCD
    - 1.8GHz PowerPC G5
    - 600MHz frontside bus
    - 512K L2 cache
    - 512MB DDR400 SDRAM
    - 160GB Serial ATA hard drive
    - Slot-load Combo Drive
    - ATI Radeon 9600
    - 128MB DDR video memory
    - 56K internal modem
now, my fist question is the 512 memory in it, is it one 512 stick or 2 - 256 sticks?
I'm not an intense gamer but i play games sometimes and will the 128mb video ram be good enough? My old computer had 5mb of video ram so it should be a incredible change.
    thanks!

    Rob,
    Check here for specs:

I have bought two refurb iMacs and have been very pleased.
I do have an Apple reseller near me so getting things fixed under warranty was no problem. Strongly suggest Apple Care to prolong your comfort zone. A fraction of the cost of replacing something major.
You should also get nice new software with the Apple Factory refurb.
EDIT: Other than Apple Care I have not had to spend a penny to keep these iMacs in top form. It is used, and as I understand it, factory refurb does not replace components that appear to have useful life left even if they have some mileage. But it has been no hassle getting things replaced either under initial warranty or now Apple Care extended coverage.

  • Taking RAM from old 24" iMac and switching it to other Macs.

    Hello there,
My old 24" iMac was damaged beyond repair and It's been replaced by my insurance company with a brand new 21.5 inch model. This is great, but I was wondering if I could take the RAM from the old mac and put it in the new. The old mac in only fit for spares - the logic board has gone.
My old iMac was a 24inch model purchased in October 2008. It had 4 gig of RAM fitted by Apple from the outset. So, potentially, I have 4 gigs of RAM that I could put in my new iMac that has 4 gig as well - pushing it up to 8. Will it fit, or is the hardware incompatible?
Alternatively, I also have a white Macbook that was purchased 18 months ago. It has 2 gigs of RAM that were also fitted by Apple. Could this benefit from any of the old iMac's RAM? As a slower machine it might benefit from it more.
Any help gratefully received. Thanks for reading.
