IMac and Thunderbolt display connectivity
Hello everybody,
Several days ago I've bought new Thunderbold 27' display and connected it as a second screen to my iMac. Video works fine but I've just discovered that all ports of that display are not functioning, i.e. USB ports are not working, and I can't see its camera and speakers from my iMac.
Is it possible somehow to get it working? Especially USB would be very helpful.
Thank you.

When I press the Command + F2, the iMac screen becomes a secondary for the MacBook Pro, and the Thunderbolt Display becomes the primary screen for the iMac. I was hoping that both screens would become secondaries for the MacBook Pro. Does anyone know how I should proceed? I have tried to connect the Thunderbolt display directly to the MacBook Pro, and the iMac to the Thunderbolt Display via the separate Thunderbolt cable, but there was no difference. And since the MacBook Pro only has the one Thunderbolt port, I'm not sure how to proceed.
Yes, eww, the language definitely states two thunderbolt displays, but I can understand the confusion and was siding with how they could make the mistake to think it would work like they want it to. My appologies for not being clear on that point, but I think you make it clear that the language in the ad says nothing about an imac.
Having said that all the language about TB would suggest that this would be possible. http://www.apple.com/thunderbolt/
High performance on display.
Thunderbolt I/O technology provides native support for the Apple Thunderbolt Display and Mini DisplayPort displays. It also supports DisplayPort, DVI, HDMI, and VGA displays through the use of existing adapters. So you can connect your Apple LED Cinema Display or other display, along with multiple high-speed devices, all from a single port. -
Baseline 2011 iMac and Thunderbolt display
Hi,
I'm thinking of maybe in the future buying a thunderbolt/ cinema display. So, will the graphics card in my iMac (the Radeon HD 6750M 512MB) be able to handle the resolution, without any lag?
Thank you in advance!Something sounds not right with the iMac. Try this:
Open System preferences, select Displays.
Once inside Displays, select "Detect displays." Hopefully the second screen will light up.
Another similar thing to try is to sleep the iMac, then connect the second display, then wake it up.
If none of these shows the second display, then the iMac might need service. -
I have a late 2008 13 inch aluminum macbook and want to purchase an iMac computer or apple display to use as an external display for it while I'm at my desk.
I can afford up to $700 for sure, maybe up to $1000 and would like one that has built in camera and audio if possible.
I'd like to know what my options are as it seems not all are compatible.
I'll mostly be doing web browsing and photo editing in Aperture.
Also wondering if it's possible to sync 2 computers so that when you make changes on one it reflects the changes in the other. Like you can with certain apps like Evernote.
Thank you for your help!
CybrenaYes he is right, Snow Leopard is your first step. Once you have that you can upgrade directly to Mountain Lion if memory serves me correct. Some people were saying that Lion was a little sluggish with the aluminum MacBook but that Mountain Lion was great. Personally I had Lion on it also and didn't think it ran badly. 10.6 was still with Rosetta (the program that ran power pc apps) but this is dropped on 10.7 and up. Up until just the other day I still had the stock 2 gb of ram. The firmware update happens with Snow Leopard and up so it should come up as a software update. If not, it can be done manually as well. The ram I purchased was 60 bucks for the 8 gb. For Lion and Mountain Lion I have to agree with the above reply, that it would run alot better with at least 4 gb. If you run that many apps at once then you are going to want as much ram as you can get. If you add a solid state drive you will be amazed at the difference it will make too.

IMac 27" with Thunderbolt Display connected, Boot Camp Problem
Hi everyone.
Let me start off by saying that I'm using a late 2012 iMac 27", 3.4 GHz i7, 680MX, 32 GB RAM, 1 TB Fusion, with a Thunderbolt Display connected.
I installed Windows 8 via Boot Camp, and it works just fine. Here comes my problem:
I have dual screens and I play Minecraft. Minecraft's full screen is basically crap, and therefore I disabled the iMac display. I used Windows-button+P to use only the secondary display. This turns the iMac display off entirely, and leaves the Thunderbolt Display on. Note: This is not possible in Mac OS X. Then I played a little Minecraft. When I was done, i wanted the main iMac display to come on again. I then used Windows-button+P again, to turn both displays on. Then bam, totally looked like the iMac display was broken. See the images below, to see how it looks:
1) http://cl.ly/image/1p2e3c1Z1z1C
2) http://cl.ly/image/2g0n1M1Y0t0g
3) http://cl.ly/image/2Q2P1c1J220d
4) http://cl.ly/image/113b3K2O1Z43
5) http://cl.ly/image/1q2v1s1n3w1f
This image-retention-like stuff stays there, even if I reboot into Mac OS X, and then it eventually disappears. I can reproduce this, by doing the same thing again, (windows-button+p) but only in Windows, because that you cannot turn of the main display in Mac OS X. Maybe this is the reason why you can't?
Anyone can tell me what I can do? I guess I could try reinstalling, but it seems more like a hardware issue, than a software issue.
Thank you for your time, and thanks in advance.
Another note: I'll try doing the opposite, and see if it happens on the Thunderbolt Display as well. (Windows-button+P, and then only using the main display)
//ifraaankOk, I am marking this as "answered", as I have solved it myself, while I still have no clue what lead to the problem in the first place.
I've been on the phone with Apple Care today, and they were as clueless as I was and had never heard of this before.
After we tried the usual stuff (unplugging all wires, PRAM Reset, SMC Reset), to no avail, I was told it could well be a hardware problem and that I should have the iMac examined at the Genius Bar, so an appointment was made.
I'll cancel that one though, as I was able to cure it by myself for now (and carrying around a 27" iMac in Munich's busy downtown pedestrian zone is not really fun).
This is what I did (and I'm so happy I tried):
In Display Settings, I switched the external display back to landscape mode and selected "mirror displays".
Then I rebooted, and voilà, the problem was gone (Apple logo on white background was showing).
I switched it back to 90 degrees rotation and no mirroring, and it's still all ok.
I booted Windows 7 in Bootcamp, then back to Snow Leopard, and it's all still fine.
I can still only wonder what messed this up in the first place, but for now I'm happy. -
Can I buy a new iMac with mini display connection instead of thunderbolt?
I have a 2009 MacBook Pro which I would like to connect to use the display & am aware that a 2009 MacBook will not connect to a Thunderbolt Display. My husband has a new MacBook Air which has thunderbolt, but I think he can get a thunderbolt to mini display connector for him to use.
I want to be able to connect my 2009 MacBook Pro to the display on the iMac. The reason I asked about the display is because I know thunderbolt is not compatible with a 2009 MacBook Pro.
From reading other posts I understand that the Cinema Display connections are compatible but not the Thunderbolt Display connection.
I am presuming that the display that comes with the iMac is the same as the Thunderbolt Display which can be purchased separately, but maybe I am wrong?
Thanks for your help.

MBPr Windows and Thunderbolt Display
Hi there,
I am trying to have my MBPr and Thunderbolt Display working under bootcamp with Windows 8. All the peripherals attached to the TBD are working fine but the display remains black/off. I am pretty sure that a solution exists but can't find the right. I've tried and under Windows 7 behavior still the same, whereas under MacOSx TBD display works fine.
Thanks for you support !
RVI made the usb stick back when I installed windows 7 that made my imacs amd gpu see the monitor connected as it did in osx and in the same was as any other windows computer with a connected extra screen
(so I turn it on in windows display settings and maybe the amd catalyst software i forget)
when I upgraded to win8 it just used the win7 driver and it still worked fine
same when I later got te official win8 drivers from apple -
Macbook pro 17 inch primo 2011 and thunderbolt display crashes
I have a Macbook pro 17 inch primo 2011 and thunderbolt display which has recently started to crash.
Only modifications I have doen lately is I swapped the CD/DVD drive for a harddrive and put in 16 GB of ram
but it has been running for more than a month with these hardware additions without problems.
Today my Macbook has started to crash frequently within 10 min to 1 hour after plugging in my thunderbolt display.
I tried to check CPU heat, change RAM but it keps crashing.
When it crashes it either gives me a blue screen, a black screen or a distorts everythings and freeze up.
When rebooting I have to press Command-Option-P-R to clear NVRAM / PRAM.
I found a few support threads from people having similar problems so I started to disconnect the thunderbolt display
and without plugging it in my laptop works fine.
I have done a SMC reset also but that has not resolved my issue.
Below is the crash report and if anybody has any suggestions what to do to resolve this please let me know
My thunderbolt display was purchased in late 2011
If this is not solveable what options do I have ?
Thanks !

FireWire Device: My Book 111D, WD, 800mbit_speedThe other day I got the blue screen, the fan going on high, and then when I disconnect my thunderbolt connection from my macbook pro - i get a shutdown.
Today I got flickering followed by the fan on high and then again I disconneced my thunderbolt cable and after a minute or two a shudown.
This never happened before. Actually I was suprised to hear about a firmware update for flickering since that's never happened to me but since updating I now get the flicker.
Any ideas?? Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is my work labtop. -
High CPU load after waking with Thunderbolt Display connected
I have a Mid-2013 MacBook Air 13" with Apple Thunderbolt Display connected. I use this setup mostly in a clamshell mode. Recently I've updated to OS X Mavericks. After that I've noticed that one of the cores is occupied by kernel_task to 100% after waking up from sleep. I've managed to isolate that to Apple Thunderbolt Display connected, without display there is a short CPU spike, but it comes down to normal levels in a couple of seconds.
I've tried resetting SMC to no success. MacBook doesn't enter Safe Mode either (progress bar goes up to approx. 30% and it goes to reboot). Probably it's because of the Thunderbolt Display, I'm not really sure.
That's not really a problem as this load doen't seem to impact CPU temp (fans are not spinning faster) and more of a activity monitor display glitch (?).
Does anyone here encounter this?Hey Max,
I also have one CPU core on my Air'13 to run 100% after a wake-up for about 1 minute (kernel_task).
It is annoyingly like this after I upgraded to Maverics. Notice, I don't have a Thunderbolt monitor, just a laptop, no periphery. -
i have one apple id, but the family all have ipods, imac and mac book connected to this account. how do i face time from one device to another?
Hello chlanli
You would need to use one Apple ID for purchases in order to get them across all of your devices and computer. If you want you can use one Apple ID for purchases and the other one to sync personal data. The article below will explain further.

MBP Retina and Thunderbolt Display color correction
What are my options regarding color correction for a new 13" Retina MBP and Thunderbolt display using Spyder color calibration system, or equivalent? Really important I nail that down before purchasing.
Thanks!

IMac won't start with Thunderbolt Display connected after firmware update
After updating my thunderbolt display firmware to version 1.2 this morning via the App Store, my mid-2014 iMac won't start up with the external display connected. I can get the iMac to start up only by disconnecting the display's thunderbolt connector. After the iMac comes up, I can reconnect the display and everything appears to function normally. I've tried several restarts and the iMac won't start up with the display connected. Anyone else experience this?

Bluetooth paring for file transfer is not supported on iPads.
You can use Airdrop if both devices support it, or a 3rd party App, but you cannot directly pair an iPad to a Macbook and transfer a file over the bluetooth connection. -
Imac as Thunderbolt display with built-in hard drive and...
Hello,
I'm new to this but couldn't find anything which completely sattified me on this idea on the internet.
Let's say I own a macbook pro with thunderbolt port and also an iMac 27" with Thunderbolt port.
Wouldn't it be great and rather easy for apple to do, if I could connect my Macbook Pro to my iMac?
Indeed this is already possible, but it only let's me use the screen of my iMac if I'm not mistaken.
My idea was to make it happen that once connected through Thunderbolt, my Macbook Pro is able to use all the assets of my iMac, as there are the Facetime camera, usb ports, ethernet port, harddisk and maybe even some processorspeed and memory?
My guess would be that the way Thunderbolt is connected to the machines, there should be no problem but the OS isn't ready for this.
Any ideas?
With kind regards,
WillemThat's what I thought, but dream with me, how cool would this be, maybe something for the next Mac Pro? Is apple reading these things actually? Thanks for the reply!
