IMac and video card ATI Radeon HD 4850

Using my iMac 24"/3.06/SD with OSX 10.6 and trying to access Final Cut Express, it tells me I need an AGP video card! Why isn't the ATI Radeon HD 4850 able to display FCE? It operates all my other Apple software. Please, has anyone an idea about this?

  • Bad video card ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 2008 early macpro?

I get the green squiggles on the screen when i connect the right hand side dvi port to a monitor. left side is fine. currently only using one dvi port port, but i am looking to upgrade to a apple 30" with the dual-dvi connection for maximum resolution.
does this indicate a possible failure of the video card?
I've only heard good things about this video card, how can i tell for certain?
might'n it be time to put in a newer video card that'd run the 27" Apple LED if that were the case?

After 4 years, my 2008 Mac Pro just experienced a grey screen, then black screen failure with the ATI 2600XT graphics card ... the usual troubleshooting methods pointed to a hardware problem.
Using the info on TS3630 from the link above, I determined the card's serial number was among those affected. I went to the Apple store this weekend, and they swapped the bad card for a good replacement at no cost to me. So, as of Sept. 2012, they are still honoring the replacement program.
Be sure to bring a copy of the tech doc + all your pertinent system info (the store was not aware of the program until I showed them the document). Also, do check in advance whether they have the replacement in stock ... I was lucky that my local store did, otherwise, they have to order and you'll need top make a return trip as they will not ship the replacement card to you.
kudos to Apple for handling this so well after all this time!

  • "iMac 27" with quad core with an ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB video processor"

I'm about to order a new iMac 27" quad core with an ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB video processor.
I'm a long time PC gamer but decided i want to make the full switch to Mac and I have a few questions about the graphics capabilities of this computer.
I game in a clan that plays Battlefield 2 Project Reality.
Will this card handle this game at the high settings and native resolution of the monitor? I also play COD4 and have the same question for that game.
Thanks for your input. I'm sure this will be helpful for all of us and I will share it with my clan of over 100 people strong.

Yeah it plays crysis fine, here is a video of me playing it:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dMUFr57ens
My specs are: Core i7, 8gb of ram and ATI 4850.

  • I have a problem with Imac mid 2010 graphics card (ATI Radeon 5670 512MB)

I have a problem with Imac mid 2010 graphics card (ATI Radeon 5670 512MB). When I play video formats like xvid, mkv, avi iMac freezes and emits horrible sound,in service said the problem is not overheating. Not a problem with memory or hard disk because I placed second correct parts. The same problem is with OSX 10.6.8 and 10.8.4 and other players.Apple hardware test found no problem and tech tool pro found no fault.
After five days of testing in the service they can not  found fault and it was decided to change the graphics card.
New graphics have been tested for two days but it is not reproduced divx ... but their test software which did not find any fault on the old graphics...
Do I have the right to complain if repair does not fix the problem because I use non apple softwere and video formats.

You could look at the System Profile for the info it presents for the card.  But why wouldn't you think it's not up to date if you have the latest install (according to your sig above)?
What program are you trying to run?  Is there anything in the system log?
I think it's the program that's having the problem and not anything with your video software.

  • IMac w/ ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB

I'm about to order a new iMac but i have a few questions about the graphics capabilities. I'm a long time PC gamer but decided i want to make the full switch to Mac. Ideally a MacPro would have been my first choice but im not that rich.
I intend to order an iMac with the ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB. Will this card handle games pretty well? I play world of warcraft and EVE online.
    Thanks for your input.

only issue here is that EVE for mac has a graphics bug because of driver issues... I dont know if this applies to the ATI iMacs, but it sure affects my Nvidia iMac. And this is a bug that have been present since EVE was released for mac, and Apple are aware of the problem, but has yet to fix it. So if I ever play EVE for more than background playing or in station use, I always restart into bootcamp, to play EVE there...

  • IMac and Video:  4GB vs 8GB RAM

Hi all, long-time Mac user, first-time poster here. It's time to upgrade the old 2003 G4 MDD with a new platform. A Mac Pro is really expensive right now, so am looking at a 2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, with 4GB of RAM and the ATI Radeon HD 4850 card. I intend to occasionally make videos -- let's say YouTube quality with the occasional family-release DVD. Is 4GB of RAM and say, Final Cut Express/iMovie, good enough, based on your experiences? I've more interest in Illustrator and PS and assume those are fine with 4GB.
It's $1k to double the RAM to 8GB -- that's a big chunk of Adobe CS's price. And do you think that Snow Leopard will treat 8GB better than 4GB for video?
I'm asking because I recognize that the iMac is not as upgradeable as the Mac Pro is. Thanks in advance for any thoughts -- a grand (or more) is riding on this!

You should be fine with 4GB; even 2GB may be sufficient for what you describe although that is irrelevant, since you cannot get that config with only 2GB of RAM.
If you really find a need for 8GB of RAM, you can upgrade it later using third-party RAM. The prices should come down. Even today, you can get a matched pair of 4GB modules from OWC for about $700
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/8566DDR3S8GP/
and you get to keep the stock 2x2GB modules as backup. When you sell your iMac, you can put the original RAM back and have the 2x4GB modules to sell separately. That makes much more sense than spending $1000 up front, and not having the extra set of RAM.

  • Receiving New iMac Free - Video Card Question

Much to my relief, Apple is replacing my 2008 24" iMac after I have brought it in to them 3 times for the same issue in a month (failure to startup, they have replaced two video cards, one MLB, and the display but the problem repeats itself within 1-2 weeks). They are replacing it with a newer model that has a 27" display, twice the ram (4 GB) and twice the HD space (1 TB). My question is about the video card in the new iMac, it is a ATI Radeon HD 4670 with 256 MB, and the card in my old iMac was a NVIDIA 8800 GS with 512 MB. My primary application for my iMac is gaming, which I believe makes the video card the most important component. Does anyone know the difference between 256 and 512 or anything about this new card? Should I ask them if I can pay to upgrade to the Radeon HD 4850 512 MB before I go in to pick up my new iMac?

    Hi Crazy,
I had the exact same problem... my 18month old 24" iMac (with 512MB Video card) went belly up.
I pointed out that what they wanted to offer me had only the 256Mb Card ? ....and he said; "oops I didn't notice that"... so we will send your new 27" iMac - with a 512MB (ATI 4850) at no charge,
So... buddy you just need to tell them - and they will configure your replacement 27" to equal or better the minimum specification of your faulty unit.

  • Satellite Pro A300 PSAGDA-02000R CPU and video card chipset mismatch

can anyone help me with the specs on this laptop.
When I look at the official toshiba brochure for this product it mentions that the CPU Chipset is
    "Mobile Intel 965PM Express Chipset"
but the second video card says
    "Intel Graphics Media Accelerator GM45"
Which is correct because what I've read on the intel website, the GMA X3100 is used on the mobile 965PM Express Chipset.
Any help will be much appreciated.

    To be honest this unit is not known to me but I know that some other Satellite Pro A300 supports other chipsets;
    For example:
SATELLITE PRO A300 PSAJ1E-005008BT supports Intel GM965 chipset and Intel GM965 graphic chip
SATELLITE PRO A300 PSAJ5E-001001GR supports Intel PM965 chipset and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470
SATELLITE PRO A300-1E7 PSAGDE-003003EN supports Intel Mobile PM45 Express Chipset and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470
SATELLITE PRO A300-1HF PSAG1E-00K00SIT supports Intel GM965 and Intel GM965 graphic chip as well.
SATELLITE PRO A300-21B PSAGDE-01S007A3 supports Mobile Intel GM45 Express Chipset and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470.
As you see there are many different notebook models with completely different hardware components
I googled too and it seems that the Satellite Pro A300 PSAGDA-02000R supports Mobile Intel 965PM Express chipset and graphic card ATI Mobility Radion, HD 3650 with 512MB + Intel Graphics Media Accelerator GM45.

  • G4 Sawtooth Processor and Video Card upgrades

    Hi there,
I'm heading for a major upgrade on my G4 Sawtooth 500Hz, starting with processor and Video card, not to mention maxing out the RAM slots.
My main applications are Final Cut, After Effects and Photoshop.
I wish I had more money for a dual processor (or even a G5 – sigh!) so I'm looking at the Sonnet Encore/ST G4/1.4GHz Processor versus the PowerLogix G4/1.4GHz 7455A PowerForce55. I've done the benchmark tests at OWC's site and I'm inclined to Sonnet. Anyone have an opinion between these 2, or even if there's another one I should be also considering?
Should I make the effort and go for a dual processor? because of the clear benefits on rendering time (specially for After Effects)?
    Video Cards:
These I think I need more help. Going thru these threads I learned that I should consider the power supply (overheating problems) and that "AGP G4's have either a 208w or a 237w Power supply (PSU)" - I have no idea what I got.
On another thread I read: "as far as I'm aware, there are only two video cards currently available retail that support Tiger's core image/video, the Radeon 9600 and 9800. Unfortunately the 9600 requires a x4 AGP slot, so that just leaves the 9800. It's a powerful card but consequently is fairly expensive and can be noisy due to it's fan."
What is a x4 AGP slot? Do Sawtooths have this?
I'll be upgrading to Tiger soon. Does this mean I can't go for the ATI Radeon 9200?
I'd prefer AGP than PCI cards. What are my real options considering power consumption, OS and performance?
Important: I’d like the video card to run 2 monitors, LCD and/or CRT.
Further upgrades would be SATA controller card and one or two internal SATA drives replacing the ones I got.
    Last but not least:
Instead of all this fuss, should I 'just' get the MacMini 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo????? and later on get a G5 (or whatever it will be called...)?
    PowerMac G4 "Sawtooth" (AGP) 500Mhz, ATI Rage 128Pro, 512MB RAM   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Internal ATA drives [25GB - 80GB] / External 160GB

I think I may have written what you've quoted. You probably already know, but you don't actually need a Core Image compatible card to use Tiger. As far as I'm aware, few applications currently make use of Core Image and fewer still actually require it (Apple's Aperture and Motion being possible exceptions).
As PB PM mentions, you have a x2 AGP slot and unfortunately there's little middle ground in terms of graphics cards available. The main options are the Radeon 9800 at one end (powerful but relatively expensive, power hungry, hot running and noisy) or perhaps the Radeon 9000 at the other. It's no longer available retail but they appear on eBay occasionally. It's an AGP card, was available in 64MB and 128MB versions and can support two monitors. One slight downside is that it has an ADC connector (alongside the VGA connector), which the Sawtooth logic board doesn't support, but I believe you can still connect an ADC to DVI adapter cable to connect a DVI monitor. It doesn't support Core Image either.

  • Anyone have a K8N neo and using an ATI Radeon 9600xt?

I have a system with the K8N Neo board and have an ATI Radeon 9600xt video card.
I have some problems and wonder if it's the RAM.
If you have a similar setup using the 2 mentioned products, and your system is stable, please let me know what type of ram you have installed.
I'm really stuck. All drivers installed are the latest, including the beta driver for the ATI Radeon 9600xt.
    Thanks for any input!

    an update...
I just finished doing a number of passes of memtest86 on the memory, and came up with errors, so I'm looking into getting the memory replaced.
I'm going to check the recommended memory for the MB.

Unfortunately graphic card exchange is not possible.
Every notebook has specific hardware platform and each of them is optimized to work properly (BIOS, cooling system and so on).
So this is definitely not possible.

Hello, I wanted to upgrade my PSU and video card. Stuart, welcome to the forum.
The truth is, any video card that will run properly with the 300W PSU in the computer, will not be much better than the integrated video.  Most newer mid-level cards require a PSU with a minimum of 400W watts.  I have searched for other members many times without any luck.  If you want to upgrade the PSU, it will give you far more options.

  • Found a Mac Pro in the trash, missing harddrive and video card. Can I fix?

I believe this is a Mac Pro G5 (Aluminum casing). It is missing a harddrive and video card. I want to fix it. I plugged it in and turned it on and I see a red light coming from the front, not sure if that means its broken or just missing a videocard/harddrive.
Is there a way I can tell if I will be able to fix this machine before buying parts? When i turn it on, it makes the OSX noise the same as when I turn my laptop on.
    THanks!

Can you fix it? No, I think you should mail it to me
The best way is to see if you can find a cheap video card - craigslist, ebay, borrow from someone else local to you (computer club or users group?)
As for hard drives, since you can boot of an external firewire drive - you have lots of options.
The video card is obviously your biggest issue. Since you apparently get the "Welcome to Mac" startup chime it doesn't sound like their is a major issue with it.
Now, even if you get it working, what are you going to do with it? The G5 was good for it's day, but for the amount of electricity it consumes, it's not the best out there - the new Mini is probably faster than it and consumes a fraction of the power.
Then again, you got it for free and can probably get a video card for under $100 - cheaper than a Mini and if you live in cold climate the extra heat it generates could be a net positive
