IMac as a monitor for iPad photographs.

Is it possible to use my iMac as a monitor to share my iPad screen when scrolling through photographs? This is my plan for classroom use.

This is from the iPad User Manual.  So I think if you purchase an Apple Digital AV adapter cable, you'll be in business.
When you connect iPad to a TV or projector using a USB cable, the attached display automatically mirrors the iPad screen. Some apps may support using the attached display as a second monitor. Check the app’s settings and documentation.
To view HD videos in high resolution, use the Apple Digital AV Adapter or a component video cable.
Make sure the video cable is firmly connected at both ends, and that it’s a supported cable. If iPad is connected to an A/V switchbox or receiver, try connecting it directly to the TV or projector instead.
Make sure that your TV has the proper video input selected, such as HDMI or component video.
If no video appears, press the Home button, disconnect and reconnect the cable, and try again.

Without any knowledge of the year machines you have it's impossible to answer that question. iMacs adn MBA's have been around for many years now so we have no idea of the exact specs your machine have. Remember when posting you need to be complete and paint a picture for us as we aren't there to look for ourselves. Your question should be  posted something like:
" I have a 2011 27" iMac and a 2009 MacBook Air, can I use the iMac as an external display for my MacBook Air?"
BTW what you are referring to is called Target Display Mode. Apple does support that on some 2009-2011 iMacs. You can find additional information at:

No.  I think it was about 2009 that iMacs could be run in target display mode but not earlier.

    Greetings,
I am trying to use my new iMac as a monitor for my work laptop (compaq). Can this be done? If so, how do I do it? Thanks in advance for any help.

As tintinlad says there are software solutions that use VNC connections (link). Hardware solutions exisit but only at Standard Definition TV quality.

BTW, Apple stopped selling iMac G5s in Jan 2006. Your new iMac is presumably an Intel iMac instead.

  • IMac Display as Monitor for PC

I have an iMac 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM, OS X 10.6.2 and an old Dell Pentium III 933 MHz which I would love to somehow connect together. I am considering to install Linux on my Dell and use both computers for different reasons. I wonder if I would be able to use my iMac like a monitor for the old PC.
I have come across the following discussions but it seems that they don't cover my case, i.e., an old Dell that does not have a port for a display port.

Any suggestions and thoughts would be most appreciated.

--but the basic problem is that you need a DisplayPort signal to drive the iMac monitor. You can convert a digital DVI output (or HDMI which is the same thing with audio and a different physical connector) to DP format with an expensive converter, but there is no way to convert an analog VGA signal to DP format. The cheaper but more complicated solution for a PC with DVI output, and the only solution for one with VGA output, is to replace your video card with a DisplayPort or Mini-DisplayPort card. Mini-DisplayPort has the same signal but a smaller physical connector.
This was not actually Apple being arbitrary: DisplayPort is more efficient and less expensive than DVI/HDMI because it dispenses with a lot of the conversion hardware needed for that format. Therefore Apple couldn't provide DVI/HDMI compatibility without increasing the iMac cost substantially.

I'd like to use my mid 2010 27" iMac as a monitor for my Mac mini. Is this possible with thunderbolt?

You'll use the thunderbolt port on your mini and connect to the mini display port on the iMac. use a mini display to mini display cable.

That is called Target Display Mode and you are lucky it's supported in the late 2009 & 2010 27" iMacs. Apple had directions in:

  • HT1338 is there a way to use an iMac as a monitor for a Mac Book?

I want to use my new 27" iMac as a monitor for my MacBook Pro. How can I do this?

It's very easy. You just need a Thunderbolt wire and then connect your MBP with your iMac. That's it.

  • Imac as external monitor for windows Notebook

    Hi,
I want to switch from my Windows Pc to a mac for private use.
I prefer the new iMac (2011) 21,5" but I could not get an definite answer (not even in my local apple store) if it is possible to connect an existing Notebook (with VGA Mini-d-sub or DVI connector) to the new iMac in order to use the iMac as an external monitor for the Notebook.
I definitely need this for my business work in my home-office so this information is vital.
If ist is not possible I have to take the macMini and stay with my standard monitor.
Can please someone tell me if it is possible at all and if so, how it can be done.
I searched the internet and only found out that it was possible with the older 27" model but no information for the 2011 21,5" so please help!
Thank you in advance for your Support.

    Hi,
    Sorry to say, but ...
The 2011 iMacs (21.5" and 27") can only be used as a second display via a Thunderbolt-to-Thunderbolt cable.
The 2009 and 2010 27" iMacs can be used as a second display via a DisplayPort connection.

  • New iMac as a monitor for XP Bootcamp on an old Air

    Hello all -
Need your assistance getting an accurate answer on an Apple related issue. Trip to the Apple store (including speaking to 5 employees, 2 of whom were genius bar staff) did not provide the clarity/certainty I am after. More on that later.
I have a work issued 11 inch Air (running XP via Bootcamp). I cannot boot the Apple OS, nor make any changes to the XP environment.
My Air is an "older" model: 11 inch with mini-display port, not the "spark" firewire port, but same size of course.
I am thinking about buying an iMac, which would be dual purpose...second computer and monitor for my Air. But I am unsure if an iMac will do this smoothly with my Air (or which model can or can't do it).
Let me tell you what I have done:
    - two visits to the Apple store
    - conversation #1 (yes, it will work...21 or 27 inch...no mention of firewire or mini-display issue, no issues with XP on Bootcamp)
    - conversation #2 (yes, but 27 inch only....it is ok that Air has mini-display and is using XP via Bootcamp)
    - conversation #3 (yes, but you need to buy an old model iMac that still has mini-display port, not firewire)
    - conversation #4 (no, it will not work with Bootcamp with any configuration)
    - conversation #5 (yes, will work with any 27 inch model...use mini-display to VGA (from Air), use firewire to VGA (from iMac), and then use a male-male VGA to connect the two
Apple has a knowledge base article on the topic, which offers yet another view. However only speaks to 2009 and 2010 models. I am unable to find a similar entry for current iMac models.
Using a 27-inch iMac (Late 2009 or Mid 2010) as an external display
Apple won't test any of this at the genius bar (well, the genius I had - conversation #4 above).
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks
    Dave

Are you talking about the Thunderbolt port on newer Macs? If so, see http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3775 & http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4617.
It appears you cannot use Target Display Mode with one of the newest Macs unless the other Mac also has a Thunderbolt port, & that only Windows 7 supports Thunderbolt, not Windows XP.

  • 2012 27" iMac as external monitor for mid-2009 Macbook Pro

I have a 13" Macbook Pro (mid-2009) with an adapter that I have hooked up to the VGA port on PC external monitors in the past. I just bought a 27" iMac (2012) and was wondering if there was any way to make that an external monitor for my Macbook Pro?
