IMac as a monitor
Can a iMac with a 27" screen, purchased in June 2014, be used as a monitor for a Microsoft Surface Pro3?
No, the Microsoft product does not support Target Display Mode (TDM), you may be interested in Apple's Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

If that configuration supports Target Display mode, use it. If not, use a product such as ScreenRecycler.

Can i use my imac as second monitor for my pc / notebook
Can i use my imac as second monitor for my pc / notebook
Without any knowledge of the year machines you have it's impossible to answer that question. iMacs adn MBA's have been around for many years now so we have no idea of the exact specs your machine have. Remember when posting you need to be complete and paint a picture for us as we aren't there to look for ourselves. Your question should be posted something like:
" I have a 2011 27" iMac and a 2009 MacBook Air, can I use the iMac as an external display for my MacBook Air?"
BTW what you are referring to is called Target Display Mode. Apple does support that on some 2009-2011 iMacs. You can find additional information at:

IMac as a monitor for iPad photographs.
Is it possible to use my iMac as a monitor to share my iPad screen when scrolling through photographs? This is my plan for classroom use.
This is from the iPad User Manual. So I think if you purchase an Apple Digital AV adapter cable, you'll be in business.
When you connect iPad to a TV or projector using a USB cable, the attached display automatically mirrors the iPad screen. Some apps may support using the attached display as a second monitor. Check the app’s settings and documentation.
To view HD videos in high resolution, use the Apple Digital AV Adapter or a component video cable.
Make sure the video cable is firmly connected at both ends, and that it’s a supported cable. If iPad is connected to an A/V switchbox or receiver, try connecting it directly to the TV or projector instead.
Make sure that your TV has the proper video input selected, such as HDMI or component video.
If no video appears, press the Home button, disconnect and reconnect the cable, and try again. -
Imac as a monitor for a MacBook Pro
I would like to use my 6 year old Imac as a monitor for my 1 yr old MacBook Pro. Any suggestions as to how to hook this up?
No. I think it was about 2009 that iMacs could be run in target display mode but not earlier.

Using new iMac as a monitor for PC Laptop
Greetings,
I am trying to use my new iMac as a monitor for my work laptop (compaq). Can this be done? If so, how do I do it? Thanks in advance for any help.
M.As tintinlad says there are software solutions that use VNC connections (link). Hardware solutions exisit but only at Standard Definition TV quality.

BTW, Apple stopped selling iMac G5s in Jan 2006. Your new iMac is presumably an Intel iMac instead.

IMac Display as Monitor for PC
I have an iMac 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM, OS X 10.6.2 and an old Dell Pentium III 933 MHz which I would love to somehow connect together. I am considering to install Linux on my Dell and use both computers for different reasons. I wonder if I would be able to use my iMac like a monitor for the old PC.
I have come across the following discussions but it seems that they don't cover my case, i.e., an old Dell that does not have a port for a display port.

Any suggestions and thoughts would be most appreciated.Ron-

--but the basic problem is that you need a DisplayPort signal to drive the iMac monitor. You can convert a digital DVI output (or HDMI which is the same thing with audio and a different physical connector) to DP format with an expensive converter, but there is no way to convert an analog VGA signal to DP format. The cheaper but more complicated solution for a PC with DVI output, and the only solution for one with VGA output, is to replace your video card with a DisplayPort or Mini-DisplayPort card. Mini-DisplayPort has the same signal but a smaller physical connector.
This was not actually Apple being arbitrary: DisplayPort is more efficient and less expensive than DVI/HDMI because it dispenses with a lot of the conversion hardware needed for that format. Therefore Apple couldn't provide DVI/HDMI compatibility without increasing the iMac cost substantially.

Use older 2008 iMac as second monitor for new iMac
Hi all,
I have one of these older machines that has no real purpose
http://support.apple.com/kb/sp485
but would serve me very well as a second monitor for my brand spanking new iMac.
The specs seem to note that there is a video output - but I'm not seeing anything about video IN.
Is it possible to use this older iMac as a monitor?that looks cool, and there is a free trial.
I am not keen on using the WiFi to do this - my old iMac has firewire but the new one doesn't.
Besides using the ludicrously expensive Thunderbolt <-> Firewire 800 convertor
http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MD464ZM/A/thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapter
is there any other way to create a wired connection between these devices? I'm not sure if there is such a thing as a USB <-> USB network connection. -
I understand this can be done in some previous generations, and am just not sure whether it works in my situation.
I have a MacBook Pro (2009) and a brand new iMac 27" (2011). It seems that MBP has a mini displayport and iMac has 2 thunderbolt ports. I am curious whether I can use iMac as second monitor for my MBP. If possible, which cable should I use, a mini displayport-to-mini displayport cable from Belkin or thunderbolt-to-thunderbolt cable from Apple. You can't except through a product such as ScreenRecycler. The iMac's Thunderbolt port won't accept video from a non-Thunderbolt source.

I have a 27 iMac and a 24 iMac.
Can I, and how do I, go about using the 24 iMac as second monitor?Niel, forgive my ignorance, I am trying to wrap my mind around this.
I have a 2009 24-inch, and a 2010 27-inch. The easiest solution would be to run male to male mini display cable between both machines and use the 24, with the 27 as the second monitor.
However, if it is not too much hassle, the opposite could be better.
To use the 27 and have the 24 as the second monitor, you say I would have to "set up a network".
Is that merely running a cable, or what exactly is involved?
And, after setting up a network, I would use the ScreenSaver application.
Presuming that I was successful in setting up and running the 27 via this method, would the ultimate result be slower than running the 27 as the second monitor?
I do not do any games or graphics, primarily making books with CS5. -
Using my iMac as a monitor for Mac mini.
I'd like to use my mid 2010 27" iMac as a monitor for my Mac mini. Is this possible with thunderbolt?
You'll use the thunderbolt port on your mini and connect to the mini display port on the iMac. use a mini display to mini display cable.

Can I use my iMac as a monitor to run the new HP Stream Mini?
Obviousy, I can install Windows 8 or possibly Windows 10 with a bootable disk or as a virtual machine. I might need to run windows as part of a side job. My neighbor is about to get the new HP Stream Mini which of course needs a monitor. Rather than go through the whole install/partition ordeal, I was wondering if I could hook up this Mini to my iMac, the iMac being the monitor? Yes/No?
thanks, BillDepends on your model & the connections. Read up on Target display mode…

It's not a great solution since OS X is still running underneath (powering 2 computers to only control 1).
You may find that once the PC is setup you can use RDP to share the screen & control it from the Mac if they are on the same network. -

HT3924 using a 24 inch imac as a monitor
Can I use a 24 inch (early 2009) Imac as an additional display with the latest (2013) Imac??
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Only 27-inch iMacs and Mid 2011 and newer iMacs can be used as a monitor. However, you can use ScreenRecycler to use your 24-inch iMac as a monitor, but it works through the network, so it will be slow
