Imac as display for mac mini

hello there:
can i use an imac as the display for a mac mini? i have an old Power PC imac and i'm considering the purchase of a new mac mini and need to know if i need to buy a new monitor or not. thanks in advance.

  • Using 27in iMac as display for Mac Pro (both latest models)

    I'm in need of using my new 27in iMac (current 2012 model) as the display for my current 2012 Mac Pro. As you probably know, the mac pro has 1 DVI port, 2 mini display port, and some firewire ports. The iMac has 1 firewire port and 2 thunderbolt ports. Both units have USB 2.0 obviously. I found that the new iMac doesn't support target disk mode with non-thunderbolt machines so that won't work. I wonder if there is a way to use these other connections to enable my mac pro to display on the imac. Any suggestions?
    (My latest wonder is if I can upgrade the video card in the mac pro with a card that has thunderbolt outputs?) 

    That is a subtle distinction, but I think you are right.
    Use an iMac with Thunderbolt as a display
    If you have an iMac with Thunderbolt, any other Mac with Thunderbolt can use it as a display. The iMac will play both the video and audio from the other Mac.
    Connect the Thunderbolt cable to the Thunderbolt ports on each computer.
    Make sure both Mac computers are turned on and awake.
    Press Command (⌘)-F2 on the keyboard of the external display Mac.
    If you want the external display Mac to play audio as well as video from the primary Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Sound, and then click Output. Select the external display Mac from the list of devices.

    I have a 20" iMac that recently had a hard drive failure that I  have not been able  to overcome. Rather than trashing it, is there a way to use it as a display for a Mac Mini?

    Maybe if you are very good at electronics. There is not easy way on older iMacs. If it was a newer one with a Thunderbolt connection then yes.
    If you can install a good HD with OSX you can use screen sharing.

  • Display for Mac mini - HDTV or monitor?

    Hi folks
    Just got a brand new Mac mini - went to PC World yesterday to get a new display - while there wondered if I shouldn't just get an HDTV instead of a monitor.  Asked for a bit of advice from one of the sales assistants and was told that they were virtually the same - same refresh rates, etc - with no discernible difference in quality.
    I opted for a 24" full HD model made by Logik, PC Worlds own brand.  When I get it home and set up via the HDMI port, the image is terrible - white fuzzy hazing round text, colours seem dull, objects lack definition and edge.  I've tried just about every setting in System Preferences>displays ( 1080p, under scanning , etc) but still the image quality is bad.
    Was I advised badly - is there a difference between HDTVs and monitors.  Should I have bought a monitor in the first place ?  If so, any recommendations?  I'm looking for something around 22"-26"

    That's a shame.  I set one up for a neighbour this week and she got a cracking picture with a cheap 22" monitor via an rgb to hdmi adapter lead. 
    I presume that you have gone into System Preferences (that's clicking on the small black Apple logo) top left hand corner of the screen, and scroll down to System Preferences. and then Displays.   You'll then see Display / Color.
    Then try one of the options presented to you in the list and see if you can find one that gives you the High Resolution you seek.  Good luck!

    Pretty much any display with HDMI input should be supported. The mini should have come with an HDMI to DVI adapter, so you can also use it with most DVI equipped displays. You can buy an adapter from mini Displayport to VGA, which would allow you to support most VGA displays, but is more likely to have compatibility issues, especially if you use older, 4:3 aspect ratio displays.

    I'm about to purchase a Mac Mini (late 2012 model) but can't stretch to a thunderbolt monitor so was wondering whether a 24inch monitor from samsung or similar would be a good fit. I would like to connect through the HDMI interface, and I want to use the monitor primarily for photo editing.

    If accurate color display is not important to you, like producing photos for print (4 color, etc.) or produce other commercial products, or don't care if color is off a bit, then just about any late model tv or monitor will work.  I'm using a 24" Samsung, about 2 years old and it's decent for basic home use.

    I did try all of the settings on the LCD display.  It is 1,920 x 1,080 pixels.  Built in 2011 by Samsung as a HD TV, computer monitor and audio/video combo.  I just let the Mac mini select the appropriate settings when I did initial startup last night.  I It came with an HDMI to DVI adapter which (to me) implies I need to get the male end of the DVI adapter to connect to the 9 pin (PC input).  Current HDMI is working but just not the "wow factor" that I expected from the Mac mini.  Compatibiltiy issue of some kind; input/output, settings, software update, or user error   Was trying to avoid getting a new monitor.

    I have a 2009 Mini with two screens. Both screens are attached to "single screen" KVMs. KVM1 is to switch between the Mini and a desktop PC, using the PC's keyboard. KVM2 is to switch the second screen between the Mini and a Windows Server, using the server's keyboard. The Mini also has the Apple keyboard and mouse attached. So in "Mac mode", I have three keyboards and mice. Obviously, I have a unique situation and if you want to switch both screens to the same PC, then this el-cheapo dual-screen KVM won't work. Perhaps if you don't mind having the multiple keyboards, but it's still going to be two steps to switch both monitors instead of just one.

    I'm thinking of upgrading. I currently have a pair of 17" G5 iMacs and I'm considering my options. I'm leaning towards Minis for a few reasons:
    1. The spec is good enough for what I want.
    2. The new iMacs are just too big for where I want to put them.
    3. The idea of moving to a platform where I can upgrade the processing element independently is attractive (one of the downsides of iMac ownership, IMHO).
    The one remaining question is this: which display should I buy. My criteria are:
    1. It needs to look good.
    2. I can't stretch to an Apple Cinema Display.
    3. I think 19" is about as big as I can go.
    4. Integrated speakers might be useful.
    Aesthetics are important to me. Recommendations needed!

    The Dell UntraSharp displays look pretty good physically, and they have excellent display quality. They have used the same panels as Apple in the Cinema Displays, so typically they have been highly recommended.

    The internal speaker (singular) in the mini is of no use other than to play the startup chime (which always comes from the internal speaker regardless of external speakers plugged in). It is too quiet for use for any other purpose really. However, there are lots of external speakers to choose from since almost any that use a standard stereo mini-jack will work just fine. If all you need is the system beeps, then the internal will likely do however.
    In terms of displays with integrated speakers, there are decreasing numbers of these models available. At one time there were models from most manufacturers, but this is not the case any longer.

    Have you tried booting the mini in Safe mode? If not, try that, and see if you get a useable screen. Likely what is happening during a normal boot is that the mini is going to a resolution that the Panasonic won't support.

    If you get a useable screen in Safe mode, try setting the resolution to 1024 x 768 and restart normally. Then hopefully you will get a useable screen from a normal boot. From that point, you can experiment with trying different resolution settings in Displays preferences and hopefully you will find a resolution that works well and that you can be happy with.

    I'm using a Samsung S27B350H which can be had for under $200 if you have a little patience and look around hard enough. It's a 27" monitor, not a 22"; but there is the S22B350H which is otherwise identical and even at Amazon it's $150.
    I'm very happy with my monitor at its price point.
