IMac as display for macbook?

Is it possible to connect say a macbook or some other external source to the imac through vga (vga or dvi with adapters)?

The iMac's Mini-DVI port is for extending or mirroring. It is not an input to use as an external dispaly.

Only 2009 and 2010 27" iMacs and 2011 ThunderBolt iMacs have the ability to be used as an external display.
'Older' iMacs don't have that ability.

  • 27" iMac as display for MacBook Pro 3.1

    Can the above be accomplished?
As far as I can see the 27" (which has video in on the miniDP) may only accept a signal in from a later MBP with miniDP conenctor also...? My older 3.1 has the DVI.
If on the other hand it does work, where on this earth does one find the right cable?!
    Thanks!

There are other ways of doing this:

with a mini display to mini display cable. Attach it to the Thunderbolt port on your MBP and to the mini display port on your iMac.
    How do I enable TDM?
Make sure both computers are turned on and awake.
Connect a male-to-male Mini DisplayPort or ThunderBolt cable to each computer.
Press Command-F2 on the keyboard of the iMac being used as a display to enable TDM.
Note: In Keyboard System Preferences, if the checkbox is enabled for "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard functions keys," the key combination changes to Command-Fn-F2.

  • 24-inch Mid 2007 as external display for Macbook Pro Retina?

I'm a video editor looking for a new laptop. Tough decisions, but these facts may help my decision...
Can I use my 24-inch Mid 2007 as external display for Macbook Pro Retina?
And if so, would the Macbook be able to access the external hard drives that are connected to the iMac? Or do the external hard drives have to be connected to the Macbook Retina?
Retina's picture quality is just incredible but compared to Macbook Pro non-retina you sacrifice: disc drive, port options, customization, anti-glare screen. And its more expensive. Arghh

I would use the retina as the primary screen for the canvas and viewer, while putting the browser and timeline on the iMac.
Apple won't help here. Unfortunately, they leave they're old products in the dust and wouldn't waste time writing an article about connecting a macbook retina to an '07 iMac.
Thank you for replying though Ralph. The answer has to be out there somewhere.

    INR is INDIAN RUPEES

What is INR? Why not take it to an Apple store or AASP and they'll tell you.

  • Using iMac G5 as a display for Macbook

Is there any possibility to use iMac G5 20'' as a display for my new Macbook.

That does not provide a direct video link between the MacBook and iMac G5 as a standard external display would.
ScreenRecycler uses VNC and therefore uses networking to share the MacBook's screen to other devices.
    From ScreenRecycler's web site:
Just start ScreenRecycler on your Mac then connect to ScreenRecycler via VNC from your old machine.

  • Using 2009 iMac as display for 2012 MacBook Pro

I have a late 2009 27-inch iMac and a Retina, 13-inch, Late 2012 MacBook Pro.  How do I use the iMac screen as a display for the MacBook.

    Hi Jim on Apple,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
It sounds like you need to put your iMac in what is called Target Display Mode. The attached article has some great information on Target Display Mode including setting up and other common frequently asked questions.

  • Using iMac as a display for MacBook Pro?

I understand that the new iMacs can be used as external displays but can not find any information on how this works. Is it just a matter of connecting a MacBook Pro to the iMac and hitting a key? Also, what cables do I need to get this to work?
    Thanks
    Tony

Hey, I just got my 27" iMac last week and can verify that this works, as of a few minutes ago. I used the cable that converts from DisplayPort (the end that plugs into the iMac) and the mini DisplayPort (the end that connects to the MacBook Pro.
Plugged in the cable and the iMac screen flashed gray for a second, indicating, I guess, that the iMac had detected the external device. Then I could toggle it over with the Cmd-F2 keyboard trick. When you toggle it on, the iMac screen looks like a giant second monitor for the MacBook Pro. When you toggle it off, the screen switches back to your regular iMac desktop. When I first connected the cable, the MacBook screen dimmed briefly with an overlayed thermometer bar I hadn't seen before indicated some sort of calibration, perhaps? That took a few seconds, then it worked like a charm.
HOWEVER, if you are expecting the iMac to function as a second display for another device (like a PC, for example), the same trick DOES NOT work. This isn't clear in the documentation on apple.com and even some of the people in the Apple Store who I spoke to when I was buying it had not much clue about this, other than that it would work with a MacBook Pro. There's another device required (evidently) to make this work. Have had to order it, but have not tried it yet:

    Hope this helps!

  • New iMac as second display for MacBook Pro not working

I just bought the new thin 2012 27" iMac as a replacement to the last model I had.
I want to use the iMac as a second display for my 2012 MacBook Pro.
I have a Mini Display Port to Mini Display Port cable that used to work with my previous setup and at work with my external display.
However, this isn't working on the new iMac. When I try the Command + F2 suggestion I've seen in the forums here. Nothing happens.
Do I need a new cable now that these are "thunderbolt" connections?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Demetre

You will most likely need a Thunderbolt cable as they are both Thunderbolt devices and not Mini DisplayPort.

  • TS3775 27" iMac as monitor for MacBook Pro?

Can someone please suggest the easiest way for me to use my 27" iMac as a monitor for my MacBook Pro? Both are using OS X 10.7.4. Thank you.

Please read both Target Display Mode 2009 & 2010 iMacs & Target Display Mode 2011 Macs ,your machine may or may not support Target Display Mode, these two Apple Advice letters will answer the question. You have not provided enough information for us to tell, because your iMac could be any 27" model and the same with your MBP. We need the specific models. If both your machines are 2011 then yes, if the iMac is 2011 and the MBP is 2011 or 2012 yes. If the iMac is a 2009 or 2010 and the MBP is 2011 or later no, if the MBP has a mini display port (earlier than 2011) then yes.

  • 27-30" display for MacBook Air (2011)

    Hi all,
Looking for recommendations for a 27-30" display for my MacBook Air (aside from the obvious choice - the Thunderbolt display).
My MBA is the latest (2011) model with Thunderbolt, 1.8GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7, 4GB RAM...
All suggestions welcomed. Any help would be great!
    Cheers

Your iMac does not support TDM via Thunderbolt so you are probably using the wrong cable, 2009 iMacs do not have Thunderbolt input, therefore connecting via a Thunderbolt cable simply will not work because your iMac does not "understand" the Thunderbolt signal. However you can try a Mini-Display port cable and see if that works.
Let us know what you find out.

  • Using tv as external display for MacBook Air?

Does anyone know how to use a 21.5" Samsung LED TV with 1920x1080 resolution as the external display for a MacBook Air A1369 running OS X 10.6.8 (broken screen)?

I guess you have to buy a Belkin HDMI routing cable. From Thunderbolt/Display port to HDMI.
Then plug it in to your macbook and into your tv. Then press CMD+F1 and voila.
If you still have any problems, i like to hear from you.

  • Using iMac as display for Windows 7 (thunderbolt to thunderbolt)

I currently have a 27-inch Mid 2011 iMac running OS X Yosemite, and my company has issued me a Lenovo W540 that is running Windows 7 and has a thunderbolt port (not mini-display -- yes, I'm sure).
I have spend countless hours trying to use my iMac as a display for my laptop, but have had no luck. When I plug the iMac into the laptop, my laptop does recognize my iMac as a "Base System Device", but when I go to the System Information on my iMac it recognizes that a cable is connected, but says there is "No device connected" to my Thunderbolt ports, and attempting Target Display Mode (Cmd + F2) has no effect. So, has anybody ever gotten this to work? Is there a separate set of drivers that I need to install on my Windows laptop to recognize my iMac as a display?
I have done virtually hundreds searches on this, and haven't found anything that relates to my specific case. Is this simply not supported? I appreciate any help that can be provided!

    Hello Allan,
I appreciate your response. I have read that a Mac running Windows with Bootcamp can use TDM, so I expected it would be a matter of installing proper drivers, but, unless anybody else has had some success, I think I'm about ready to admit defeat.
I appreciate you proposing a software solution, however, ScreenRecycler only supports using a Windows PC as another display, not the other way around. I did play around with a couple other software solutions, but none of these solutions would work well once my work PC is connected to VPN.
I guess I'll continue to work off a small laptop screen while a giant 27-inch screen on the same desk goes unused. Very frustrating.
