IMac as external monitor for PC laptop? (Laptop has HDMI.)

Will Thunderbolt work for this? Ideally, I will be able to toggle display inputs -- between the iMac and the PC laptop, on the iMac display.

2011 ThunderBolt iMac only accept other ThunderBolt Macs as source.
The Intensity Extreme http://www.blackmagic-design.com/uk/products/intensity/ might be what you need once it is released.
For the 2009 and 2010 27" iMacs there is the Kanex XDhttp://www.kanexlive.com/xd but it is not compatible with ThunderBolt iMacs as Kanex states in their Product FAQs.
Plus it maxes out with 720p input with the iMacs.

  • Can i use a hdmi to mini display port cable to use my iMac as external monitor for a windows laptop?

Does anyone know if a hdmi to mini display port cable can be used to link a  windows laptop with an 27 inch iMac to use the iMac as an external monitor. Or are there other options to connect my DELL latitude 6430?

Is the 3.5mm-to-optical cable any better than using a standard 3.5mm?  I don't know too much about this stuff.  My thought process was that if the source of the connection is a 3.5mm jack, does it make a difference using a cable that starts as a 3.5 and converts to optical?
Chances are excellent that if your receiver is less than 20 years old it has an optical input, this is a digital signal which will sound MUCH MUCH better than using an analog 3.5MM to 3.5MM connection. I recommend using the cable suggested or one with the same connections but of a different length if your needs warrant it.

  • Imac as external monitor for windows Notebook

    Hi,
I want to switch from my Windows Pc to a mac for private use.
I prefer the new iMac (2011) 21,5" but I could not get an definite answer (not even in my local apple store) if it is possible to connect an existing Notebook (with VGA Mini-d-sub or DVI connector) to the new iMac in order to use the iMac as an external monitor for the Notebook.
I definitely need this for my business work in my home-office so this information is vital.
If ist is not possible I have to take the macMini and stay with my standard monitor.
Can please someone tell me if it is possible at all and if so, how it can be done.
I searched the internet and only found out that it was possible with the older 27" model but no information for the 2011 21,5" so please help!
Thank you in advance for your Support.

    Hi,
    Sorry to say, but ...
The 2011 iMacs (21.5" and 27") can only be used as a second display via a Thunderbolt-to-Thunderbolt cable.
The 2009 and 2010 27" iMacs can be used as a second display via a DisplayPort connection.

I have a 13" Macbook Pro (mid-2009) with an adapter that I have hooked up to the VGA port on PC external monitors in the past. I just bought a 27" iMac (2012) and was wondering if there was any way to make that an external monitor for my Macbook Pro?

  • What iMac version (at home) do I need to use it as external monitor for a lenovo laptop (business)

    Hi Apple Fan's
I have a lenovo (T400) for business and would like to use an iMac at home as external monitor.
I saw a lot of topics but no final response if it's possible with one of the (older) iMacs.
Is there an iMac (not needed to be version 2011) that can do this?
    thanks for your help!
    regards from Switzerland
    Patrick

The only iMac models that support direct input as a monitor from a non-Mac computer are the 27-inch iMac (Late 2009 or Mid 2010) and those accept only DisplayPort input. See:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3924
The 2011 iMac will support only another Mac with a Thunderbolt port.

  • Can the B520 be used as an external monitor for a macbook via the HDMI in?

    Hi,
I'm very happy with the Lenovo, but it looks like our family will be acquiring a macbook in the near future.  Can I use HDMI in on the Lenovo B520 so that it becomes an external display for an apple computer?
    Thanks for the help.

Thank you very much for the help. Now if I could only figure out why the Lenovo B520 doesn't see my apple airport extreme network anymore. I guess I'll have to post separately for that one. It was incredibly fast and now it doesn't connect at all. Thanks for the help on this. I need a mac for access to iBooks Author. Silly (and expensive), but true. Thanks again!

  • Using new iMac as a monitor for PC Laptop

    Greetings,
I am trying to use my new iMac as a monitor for my work laptop (compaq). Can this be done? If so, how do I do it? Thanks in advance for any help.

As tintinlad says there are software solutions that use VNC connections (link). Hardware solutions exisit but only at Standard Definition TV quality.

BTW, Apple stopped selling iMac G5s in Jan 2006. Your new iMac is presumably an Intel iMac instead.

  • IMac as external monitor questions

I have an HP 6930p laptop from work and would like to connect my new 27" iMac to it to use as a larger monitor. The HP only has a VGA port, so I was hoping to find out if it's possible to connect this somehow to the iMac?? I didn't know if this could really be done with adapters, etc.
One other question: I know you can use the iMac as an external monitor for a MacBook laptop, but will this also work if you're running a PC operating system via VM-Ware on the MacBook??
    Thanks so much

You can only use your 27" iMac for a device with DisplayPort output. To use your Windows laptop with VGA output you would need to find a 3rd party adapter specially designed to convert the VGA output to DisplayPort output. Then you would need a cable that went from the adapter to the iMac that has a mini-DisplayPort connector on the iMac's end.
As long as the MacBook has a DisplayPort there should be no issue with Windows on a virtual machine. You just need a cable with the correct connectors when it is DisplayPort to DisplayPort.

  • HT3924 Using iMac as external display for PC.  Question re: Cables

I have a PC laptop with an HDMI output, but not a mini displayport.  I have a 27" iMac with a mini displayport jack.  If I want to use the iMac as an external monitor for the PC laptop, can I use a mini displayport to HDMI cable?  Or does my laptop need to have a mini displayport jack as well?
    Thanks

This approach will only work if the OP has a 2009 or 2010 27" iMac. It will not work on any other iMacs. What he is attempting to do is called Target Display Mode, TDM is addressed in these two Apple articles:

  • Full HD LCD TV as external monitor for Win XP games?

    Hello everyone,
I have a current MacBook Pro with Mac OS X 10.5.2 (Great machine.
I am also running Windows XP via BootCamp for some business applications and games.
I would now like to buy a "Full HD" LCD TV (probably the Samsung LE 40 M 86 BD) and use it as an external monitor for gaming, using a DVI > HDMI cable.
    Will this work? I.e.:
    + MacBook Pro (2 GB / 2.2 GHz / GeForce 8600M GT)
    + BootCamp & Windows XP SP2
    + DVI > HDMI Cable
+ Samsung Full HD TV (1920x1080)
+ DirectX 8/9 games (Half-Life 2, Portal, Far Cry etc.)
    = Big Screen Gaming?
Or are there pitfalls I am currently not thinking of?
(This is one of those questions where the typical TV dealer / Windows gamer will shrug and say "Yeah. Whatever. Should work. Maybe. Buy everything and try it.")
I'd be glad if people who have tried this could share their experiences.
    Thanks.

Thing is, I am trying this too. However, the only option I get is to clone the display. This is not what I want, I want to use the TV as the primary display. This way games will startup on the big TV and not on my Macbook Pro. Now I don't get the option to use that TV as a primary display.
So leaves me with the option to clone the display and have same image rendered on both screens... This is NOT what i want. In Leopard everything works great... obviously...
PLease let me know if you got any solutions for this

  • How do I use my late 2011 iMac ( with thunderbolt) as external monitor for laptop/Xbox or other device with hdmi as output.

May be this question has been asked thousand times. how do I use my mid 2011 iMac ( with thunderbolt) as external monitor for laptop/Xbox or other device with hdmi as output. if apple hasn't removed that feature and has just moved that functinoality to thunderbolt then how can I use it. currently there is no laptop available with thunderbolt output. no 3rd party converter available. whats the use of having feature on latest functionality if we cant use it. I wish they would have made one port has mini-dvi and other thunderbolt for backward compatibility untill some vendor comes up with converter.

    It Says :
Mac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011) and iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) and later computers support Target Display Mode via Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt cable (2 m) when the source is another Thunderbolt-equipped computer.
Name one computer model/vendor which has thunderbolt as output for display + audio. this is so stupid to move to new technology without availbility of its compatible devices.

Target Display Mode- Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
I am unaware of any PCs that support connection via Target Display Mode. I have never tried it myself, so I don't know if it would work. All you can do is try provided you have an iMac that supports TDM and the proper cable adaptors.

Can I use my iMac screen as an external screen for my PC laptop ?

Thanks for your reply. After reading the article though, I'm still not really sure what the answer is. For example, you mention something that can be done, with some hurdles to go through, for 27" iMacs. Mine is a 21.5" iMac, but seems to have the same port you mentioned in the article. Or maybe it isn't. Anyway, I'm still not sure if it is possible after reading that. Interesting information though.
