IMac as router - strange

I have seen several youtube videos and internet articles about this, but nothing really answers these issues.
I have an iMac (2013) using ethernet for internet. I want to set up a wireless connection for my ipad which uses my iMac for the router.
I have set up internet sharing in System Preferences and changed the wifi settings to use the new wifi network i have set up. However, when I select my wifi network, my ipad connects to the iMac connection, but will not connect to the internet. Also, the iMac loses its internet connection and the only way to get it back is to reboot. any ideas?

Why not just get a router, it sure would be a lot easier that attempting to troubleshoot this.

  • I've update iOS devices to 8.0 and now need to update xCode, but keep getting "unknown error -50" leaving me with a non-working internet connection - the only fix seems to be reboot of both iMac and router - any ideas?

Having updated all my iOS devices to iOS 8.0 I now need to update xCode to match. I've tried several times, and on each occasion have received an "unknown error -50" message after getting about 500Mb. After this my internet connection appears to be fully occupied, and the only fix appears to be a reboot of both the iMac (2.5GHx Core i5, 4Gb RAMm OS X 10.9.5) and the router (Netgear DG834 v5, firmware 1.6.01.34) At first I thought that the error had not stopped the download, but after waiting for 30 minutes the connection was still unresponsive, though traffic was indicated as passing through but the router status page, and no additional content had been added to the download. Anyone else having a similar problem and different ideas as to fixing it?

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Safari 4 and logging in to my router: Strange!

I have a Orange Livebox that I like to log into now and again just to alter settings and fiddle about. This was never a problem with Safari 3 or Firefox; simply enter name and password (admin, admin) and you have a table with all the options for wifi, ip's, protection, firewall etc. With Safari 4 something strange happens: I enter the name and password. Fine. It then asks me for name and password again. And then again! Each time one frame on the page loads up. First the livebox text in the corner, then the large window with options for your particular selection, and then the menu of options on the side which, oddly, doesn't load up after inputting the name and password for the third time. So you stop the loading, refresh and you have everything available. Is there something in Safari 4 I can change so I only need to input my name and password ONCE like before?

    Hi
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
That's something the developer needs to change so the site correctly recognizes Safari 4. Contact them.
As a workaround, one option is to open Safari Preferences>Advanced panel. There, check "Show developed menu in menu bar". Close the Preference panel. Then, in the Menu Bar>Developed Menu>User Agent, select Safari 3.2.3. Then enter the URL for the router. This may "trick" the site coding into thinking you are using Safari 3.
If that doesn't work, use Firefox in the Interim until the developer changes the site's code.

  • IMac or Router

I'm at my wits end with this mysterious problem.
My almost brand new iMac has worked flawless for many months now, connecting to the internet on our wireless network, using this Linksys router that is in a separate building along with the modem.
Suddenly, it no longer connects to the internet. Sometimes it shows the network name as available - many times does not even show the network, doesn't pick it up. But even when it DOES see the network, it does NOT connect even after entering the password for WEP security. (gives a message saying "there was an error connecting to the network")
So then I took this iMac and lugged it back to the other building where the router and modem are, and it worked just fine!
When I bring it back to its other location, it will not work at all. The odd thing is that it HAS worked in this location very well, for quite some time now.
Who is to blame?? The iMac? The router? Clearly, everything works if the computer is in the same building with the router.I have another laptop next to this iMac and IT gets a decent signal and works, so the signal strength is OK.
Any Apple/Mac gurus out there? Could my Airport Extreme card be suddenly defective and can only pick up the signal when its 4 feet away from the router??
It's exasperating because I'm finding it difficult to determine which piece of hardware is the problem.
    Thanks!

You don't have a cordless phone near the new location do you?

  • Imac internal router problem

We are using Bell Wimax to connect to the internet and due to their towers being down for 2 weeks, we had lost our internet connection. It is back up and running, however we no longer can connect wirelessly to the computer. I was using the imac as the router and have tried to reestablish a connection, however the other computers can't connect. They recognize and register the signal but won't join in. I have tried to reset the location and then redo the sharing, but again, it did not work.

  • SMC Cable Modem/Router strange behavior

I have a home network that has my own router/wifi, so my Comcast cablem modem/router is used to pass data from the Comcast internet interface to my router and provide a telephone line.  My network takes care of everything else.  Earlier this week, Comcast had to replace the router because the telephone service failed.  When I got home from my business trip, I began to reconfigure the router to meet my needs. The router is an Arris Model TG862G. After I got all the settings the way I wanted, my network could no longer reach the Internet.  A laptop connected directly to the router could.  After lots of headscratching, I restored the modem to factory defaults.  Network access returned.  I began setting the options one at a time, testing network connectivity at each step.  Everything worked fine until I turned ON "Remote Management" by HTTP on port 8080 (the default, which was grayed out so I could not change it).  As soon as I saved the setting, network connectivity to the internet died.  Once I saved the values, the port number then became editable.  I changed the port number and network connectivity resumed. I have noticed before that Comcast must use port 8080 for some internal stuff because I was never able to get an incoming connection on  port 8080 to work.  Other ports worked fine, but not 8080. So there is some "magic" on port 8080 that not only makes it unavailable for incoming traffic but also causes the routing within the cable modem to fail.  It is unfortunate that the router defaults to that port. Very strange.

When I plug in a macbook air (10.8) via Ethernet USB, connected to one of the LAN ports on the TC, I get a strange 169.x.x.x IP address. Something tells me the TC isnt bridging here...
Suggest that you first check to make sure that the AirPort Express is bridging to the Ethernet port. To test, temporarily turn off the wireless on your laptop and connect it directly to the Express using an Ethernet cable.
Can the laptop connect and log on to the Internet?
If it can, then you know the Express is delivering an Ethernet signal, and the TC needs some trobleshooting.
It the laptop cannot connect, you must first troubleshoot to find out why the Express is not bridging to the Ethernet port.

  • IMac 600 SE - strange power/video problems - need motherboard?

    Hello all,
Got this "project" iMac, have no knowledge of its history. Here's what's going on:
When I first got it, it would take 3 or 4 tries for it to fully boot up, on the first try it would shut off after a second or two, the next try it would get a little further along before shutting down and finally on the 3rd or 4th try, it would boot up completely.
Initially, it had a dim display and a bunch of wavy horizontal lines, like a TV with bad reception using a "rabbit ears" antenna. The person I got it from said from what he had learned, he thought it was a power supply problem.
So I replaced the down converter/power supply with a spare one I had leftover from a previous motherboard replacement, which made no difference at all, same problems.
So I then checked the firmware, which was the latest version (4.1.9). Then I did a PRAM reset, which helped, followed by a PMU reset. I did the PRAM reset several times when problems cropped again, and have done the PMU reset twice, resetting the clock both times.
The shutdowns on boot up have disappeared, but it will occasionally shut down out of the blue after being on for awhile now. The horizontal lines have disappeared, but it now has a strange video problem:
The geometry of the screen is off-kilter by default, so when I go into System Properties to reset the geometry there, and I use the "Rotate" command to correct the overall incline in the display from right to left, the display gets dimmer, and sometimes the horizontal lines reappear, usually on the right side of the screen. When I click on "Factory Defaults", the display gradually brightens again, and if horizontal lines are present, they disappear. This phenomenon doesn't appear to occur when I adjust the display height and position, only with the "Rotate" command, rotating it counter-clockwise. I believe the iMac even shut down once when I was doing this.
I have also noticed an occasional higher-pitched "whine" on boot up, which usually results in an eventual shut down.
So, are these problems symptomatic of a bad motherboard or a bad video board/card? Since I have the latest firmware and have tried both PRAM and PMU resets, and the occasional random shut down still occurs, it makes me think it's a hardware problem.
I just need some feedback here before I purchase a replacement motherboard.
Also, can the video board/card be replaced separately?
    Thanks for any ideas/suggestions/help!

In your situation I believe 2 components need checked first. PAV board and the CRT. Or essentially anything shared by the 2 items, such as the CRT yoke/gun board.
As far as the logic board goes, the video chip-set is part of it (soldered in) and not repairable. Those parts rarely "weaken" (normally just die) so I would be less likely to suspect them.

  • IMac mouse problems / strange behavior (impossible to configure mouse preferences)

I work in a design and communication school, the used hardware is iMac (Intel) whit Lion (OS X 10.7), we have several rooms equipped with these Macs where students light up their data on the server.
Today, 3 of these Macs had problems with the mouse, including mine.
Basically the clicks don´t work correctly. We cant close windows, open folders or change some options by clicking, but we can open softwares, scroll.
In safari if i search something, when I try to click the link i want, safari opens a new tab instead the one i am at, and has other strange behaviors. So I´ve tried to change the mouse settings, and when i make a change, for example: change the scroll button to "buttun 3" the mouse automatically assumes all buttons to dashboard, but not at the configurations window because it says that scrool button still "button 3",  when i use the click or the scroll or any button it just slid me to dashboard or a setting that has nothing to do with my option.
This is really causing a big problem since we are a school.. I already tried to change the mouse, clean, try another usb ports, search for update or restart but it still doing the same.
I think it have something to do with an update.. but not sure.. would be really gratefull if someone knows how to solve this.
As a temporary solution,i disabled all options using only the mouse click, but to do it, i had to plug in my tablet (that works perfectly for the record) and use it instead of mouse (since it was impossible to use it), than went to mouse preferences and disable left click, scroll and side buttons and then restart the Mac (or else it wont work)..
it will work fine but still a problem cause I use all mouse buttons custom as well as the students...

I have been experiencing a freezing mouse as well. I updated the mouse drivers but it is still happening. I have been repairing the permissions and noticed something very strange see the mention of a -t. I have been running unix systems since 1984 and have never seen that before....

  • 24" iMac (Primo 2009) strange RAM upgrade issue

I have a 24" iMac (Primo 2009) at work. I been granted a RAM upgrade by the IT department and have received 2 indentical 4 GB modules.
The 24" iMac (Primo 2009) uses 1066 MHz DDR3 modules and supports up to 8 GB RAM in 2 slots. I have purchased RAM from this source http://www.dustin.dk/product/5010642132/corsair-4gb-ddr3-1066mhz-1x4gb-so-dimm-i mac-macbook-macpro/#intcmp=searchProvider_SiteSeeker (Corsair Mac Memory so they SHOULD be fine.)
    Here's the issue:
I had 2x 2GB modules. I have taken both out.
I have inserted the new 2x 4GB modules but the machine refuses to boot. It gives off 3 beeps-interval-3 beeps-interval (repeats).
I took out one of the 4GB modules from slot B. It boots.
I inserted the one I removed in slot B again so we're back at 8GB. same beeps. No boot.
I switched the 2 4GB modules from slot A+B around. Now beep-interval-beep-interval (repeats) No boot.
I inserted one 4 GB in slot 1, and one of the old 2 GB in slot 2. It boots with 6GB RAM.
I inerted only the one that won't boot when in slot B in slot A, beep-interval-beep-interval (repeats) No boot.
OK - so logical deduction tells me one of the new 4GB RAM modules is defective. No matter what configuration, booting fails with that specific module inserted, though there are different beeps. I also know tha both slots work since the machine works with 6 GB RAM (2+4).
So I called Dustin, and since we're a big customer they sent a new moduel for free. But, I have the same isssue with the new module!! What are the chances I have recived 1 working and 2 defective modules? not big right? So my iMac seems fine with the old 2GB modules and one of the new 4 GB modules, but says no to the 2 other 4GB modules.
YES - I have tried resetting PRAM and SMC to no avail. Any clue?

Switched the 2 modules around, so there's now a 2GB in slot A and a 4 GB in slot B. Still works fine

  • C309g wireless setup with iMac i7 / Router D-Link DIR-300

Just trying to get the wireless connection. I've just the USB-cable for the installation process evereything worked out fine. Now the test report shows that everything is OK. In mac os the printer is added to the print&fax menu status: green light.
But i cannot print / connect to the printer when I open the printer utility.
Think it's an IP problem!? The IP-Range from the router is 192.168.... now the printer got another IP address 169.254....
I do not know how to process further. DHCP-Server on/off in the router settings? Assign the printer a fixed IP within the DHCP range? Every device in my wireless network is assigned with MAC-address and IP in the settings because I wanted to make sure nobody could connect from outside. I tried to assign a free IP in the range 192.168 but that didn't work any suggestions?

  • IMac Screen Saver - Strange Images Appear?

I have my iMac set up to "show" pictures like a slide show. Every few pictures, there is a fuzzy usually multicolored "image' that appears like it is inserted over a valid picture . . it then fades away . . .I know these fuzzy "images" are somewhere on my HD, but I cannot find them. I would like to delete them as they have no value and override a perfectly good picture. My wife has the same issue on her older G4 iBook.
Any ideas on how to delete those images?

They are probably icons or some other low-rez images which is why they show up the way they do.
The slide show, i believe, shows all your images, so they come along. They may not even have the standard image extensions, jpg, etc., but some other rare or special image extension.
You might find them by searching for all images using Finder, one main folder at a time.
I am not sure if the activity logs would list the various images displayed during the screensaver, but it is also worth a look.
Someone recently posted the exact same issue which is why I remember it.
Not that the search function is back you can search this board, going back only a few months for a similar topic.

  • My iMac is acting strange

I am working in my Imac and suddenly appear a window, I think with the yellow triangle, I am not sure, because it is to fast to read. that happens a lot lately. Please help!

First step would be to run the hardware test that came with your Mac.
It's on your factory restore disks. One of them will have the "Apple Hardware Test" printed on it. Boot from that disk, and run the short and extended tests.
See if anything shows-up in the tests.
The tests can take an hour to two hours depending on the system.
That would be the first place to start.
Let us know what the result is.

  • New iMac email acting strange missing and flashing text

    Having a problem with mail,
bought my new iMac and setup mailboxes.
all emaiil from comcast server was downloaded (more thaqn 35,000 mail messages)
when browsing mail I noticed mail body text was not showing in the preview window, but the message showed in the list.
I could see the message if I doubleclicked on it and opened it.
sometimes the mail text and images would be flashing and sometimes missing, other times present.
I called Apple support and went through several steps to try and zero in on the problem.
    we reset and reindexed.
we created a copy of the mail folder on the desktop
Created a new mailbox and mail seemed to work OK, until the mail folder was imported into the new mailbox, then I had the same weird problem.
somehow, when I went back to my original mailbox, there were none of the old mail items in the mailbox and they were all missing from the mail server.
All the 35,000 emails were gone.  It looks like the setting in the new mailbox must have been set to delete emails from the server (maybe as a default)
after a few weeks, the mailbox continued to accumulate emails and I have not seen that problem again.
It appears that there was some mail buffer in the new iMac that got overloaded or exceeded capacity and couldn't handle the 35,000 emails.
But, I need to recover those deleted emails.
Has anyone found the cause for this erratic behavior whith large mail folders?
I still have that old mail folder
how can I restore it and recover those emails, without erasing what I now have (new emails) from the server?
is there a limit on the number of emails on the iMac?  my old Mac dual G5 system didn't have this problem.
    Thanks,
    Matt

You could try importing the mailboxes (File ▹ Import Mailboxes) from the old Mail folder, at the risk of possibly corrupting the database again. There is no fixed limit on the number of messages, and the number you had is not unusual. It's corrupt messages that cause problems.

Welcome to Discussions - have you tried booting from your install disc and using Disk Utility?
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk
Then, boot back to your internal drive and try to repair permissions.
    Please post back with results.
