Imac Audio Problems

I hav a problem with the sound from my imac 2GHz Intel Core Duo. Basically when there is sound playing through the internal or external speakers there is a strange fluctuation between the speakers, the sound reverbs between the left and right - rather anoying, can anyone assist me in sorting this problem out.

Any luck? I've got a similar problem. Both the Speakers work on my intel imac 20 inch. I can go to system prefs/sound and toggle from left to right, and they both work. BUT: when I plug in headphones(I've tried 4 different pairs), I only get sound in the right ear. I thought it could be a problem with the audio out mini jack, but even when I plug earphones/headphones into my USB griffin iMic, the same thing happens. Sound in one ear only. Any help from your experience would be appreciated!

  • IMac audio problem

I have a Core 2 Duo Mac with 3 gigs of ram that I'm using for Logic 9.
I experience these little 'stalls' all the time. Not sure what to call it. I'll be working, and then everything will freeze. Usually for about 5 seconds? Then it'll spit out some audio, and I can continue as if nothing had happened. Things run smoothly and stable other than these stalls.
I keep a close eye on RAM, so I don't think that's the issue here. I had been running out of ram, but I changed my workflow around and now usually have plenty of headroom there. I'm wondering if I have a dying sound card maybe?
Anybody know what this kind of thing points to as a problem? Ways to find out what it is perhaps? Thanks.

  • Audio problems and can't open project to another computer.

I'd like some help with moving a project from my G4 powerbook (10.4.3 1Gb RAM) to my G5 iMac (10.4.4 1.5Gb RAM) both with ilfe 06 installed. I copied the project file across and it won't start up on my iMac. The reason I'm trying to move the project over is that the audio quality on the entire (powerbook) project is absolutely u.s. (created on my brand new powerbook with factory settings intact). I have already used iMovie on my iMac with the same camera and it worked just fine and was kinda hoping that 'porting it over might cure the problem, although I'm not at all sure it will. I think the fault is probably embedded in the original. (incidentally, I CAN open the moved project when I connect my powerbook to my iMac)
    Audio problem:
I noticed, while importing the clips, that my powerbook started sporadically cutting out the audio (unusual I thought!) but I was under a bit of pressure to complete and thought it was just a temporary glitch.
I'd appreciate some help with that also, if anyone has a suggestion.
Anyway, as I said, the project simply won't open on my iMac (I've checked permissions they seem OK) iMovie starts up when I click the project, but stalls until I click iMovie's icon in the dock, where upon the previous project I worked on loads up fine.
Most frustration overall, I thought if I had 2 machines I would have ultimate flexibility - It's not woking out like that at all.
I'm apprehensive about upgrading my powerbook to 10.4.4 at the moment - frightened I'll loose the whole thing!!
I've used iMovie 2, 3 and 5, never had any issues like this before.
    iMac G5 + Powerbook G4 (10.4.3)   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Same here. I don't have a solution, but I understand exactly your problem. This is what I did.
Imported movies into iPhoto from stills camera.
Opened iMovie, new project bla bla, dragged from event library (iphoto videos).
    Made/edited movie etc.
All gone well. Exported to iTunes/iDVD etc no problem.
Now, I don't need to keep all the original video clips in iPhoto so can I delete them?
Yeah sure, I'll just drag the iMovie project to my ext HD as per the iMovie help files.(in iMovie)
Opened project that is now on ext HD.
    File/Consolidate/Copy clips & Move events.
But.... it doesn't. The 'Copy clips' box even says '2.2gb' which is the right amount for the movie clips. But they never go to the iMovie project file on my ext HD.???

  • Audio problem with one episode of iTunes tv show on two apple tvs but audio works fine on same show on iMac

I have a season pass to Dr Who and all 30+ other shows purchased on iTunes work great. Last night's episode (Hide) has a hissing sound so loud it drowns out all the audio in the show when i try to watch it on my Apple TV.  I then downloaded the episode to my iMac and my iPad and no audio issues there. However when I tried playing it shared from my iMac to the Apple TV and the audio problem was there again. Same thing happened when I tried to AirPlay from my iPad to Apple TV.
I have two Apple TVs. One is latest model w latest upgrade, the other is generation before without latest upgrade. Same audio issue on both. I have tons of iTunes TV shows and movies and this is the only episode with an issue. Something is wrong with this file that causes it to screws up the audio on Apple TV.
Has anyone else seen this kind of audio issue specific to just one TV episode or movie?  Anyone know support path for iTunes problems?

If other episodes play Dolby Digital fine this could be a file encoding problem - they sometimes get it wrong.
I suggest you all contact Apple about the problem via itunes store support here:

  • USB audio problems with 2013 iMac

I'm having a strange audio problem with USB microphones and headsets. The issue with my Logitech H650e is shown in this screencast I recorded. In the first part of the screencast, I am not speaking into the mic—yet you can see the levels fluctuating as if there is static playing (not in a natural pattern that you'd see when someone is speaking). In the next part of the video I demonstrate that selecting the built-in iMac mic for input, and then re-selecting the Logitech headset temporarily solves the problem. You can see the input start to fluctuate normally as it should when I am speaking. But at 0:31 in the screencast, you can see the input levels freeze and stop registering anything. I continued to speak until the end of the screencast, but no input was detected. For this screencast, I was on a Go To Webinar call, but the problem occurs regardless of whether I'm using Skype, Go To Webinar, GarageBand or any other software.
The problem with my Blue Yeti USB microphone is also different. In that case, the input does not freeze as it does with the Logitech headset. The levels appear as you would expect, and it seems to work. However, the person on the other end can hear static in the background, even though I don't hear it in my own headphones. I learned this because I just tried to do a Skype interview with the Blue Yeti, and the interviewer told me they could hear static. We closed Skype and called each other back twice, but the problem persisted. Then, suspecting the problem was related to what I described above with the Logitech, I unplugged the Yeti and then plugged it into my Macbook Air 2013 (also running Mavericks). Lo and behold the static completely disappeared.
My Griffin iMic and Audio Technica lavalier mic (attached to the iMic) behaves similarly to the Yeti, except in this case I can hear the static when I speak with my monitoring headphones. The input works but I get a lot of cracking and static in the background. This was confirmed by calling the Skype Test Call number and recording a message, which is then played back.
    Here are the facts:
All 3 of my USB audio microphones/headsets do not work with my 2013 iMac running Mavericks
All 3 of these microphones/headsets worked fine with my 2008 Mac Pro running Mountain Lion
All 3 of these microphones/headsets work fine with my 2013 Macbook Air running Mavericks
In this other thread, several people are reporting similar issues with the iMac 2013 and Mavericks. At least two people did not have the issue when the iMac 2013 was running Mountain Lion. This of course suggests the issue is the combination of the iMac 2013 and Mavericks.

  • Audio Problem since upgrading to Mountain Lion

Has anyone encountered audio problems with their iMac?  I just upgraded to Mountain Lion on my i7 27" with 16GB of Ram and found that the Audio starts to get distorted and eventually cuts out after about an hour!  It starts cutting in and out when I move the mouse and eventually there will be no sound at all!
Sometimes it can take over an hour of steady use, my last time was watching a movie on Netflix.  I initially noticed this using a USB DAC Headphone Amp.
I never had any Audio problems before, my machine is over 1 year old.
I enjoy watching movies in iTunes and DVDs, but this is making it difficult!  A full restart usually fixes the problem for a time but it will eventually come back
I'm seriously thinking of going back to Lion for the time being and seeing if it is a Hardware problem.

i don't know if mine is the same issue, but i had no sound through any of my applications after upgrading to mountain lion.  here is what i had to do to fix it:
-- applications > utilities > audio midi setup > UNmute all options under "built-in output" (they were mysteriously muted)
Also, I noticed that the options for "use this device for sound output" and "play alerts & sound effects through this device" were no longer assigned to my Built-in Output device.  They were assigned to some other random sound driver.  To fix, i right-clicked on Built-in Output and reassigned those items to my built in speakers.  All fixed now!
    very weird problem, though.

  • It's an audio problem, how can i fixed it?

hey, why my imac 10.7.4 suddenly don't give a sound. the volume icon cannot be click, it's an audio problem, how can i fixed it?

this should only happen if you have a digital toslink connected to your audio jack.  is there a red light coming out of it?
have you tried restarting the computer?
does your system see your audio device in about this mac more info audio?

  • IMac audio troubles, unknown origin

Okay, just bought a G5 (2.1gHz with iSight camera, so I don't know what "revision" that falls under...
Working fine for three days, then I installed the iPod software. When opening iTunes, I opted to play some music. After a few songs, things started going haywire--audio first sounded like it was playing on a warped and/or slow record player, then quit playing altogether and went to white noise/static over the speakers. This now obnoxious noise seems to exist regardless of speaker volume. The only way to get this to go away is to restart the machine.
When it restarts, the light on the front comes on, and the cooling fan kicks into overdrive, but that's as far as it goes. Then, I hold the power button down to restart again, and all spins up fine. The audio problem does return after a fashion.
    Thoughts?

Update: iTunes problem still occasional. I ran it for 3 hours, uploading and downloading songs from CD to the iPod all the while with no problem. My wife came home and uploaded a CD, and it went to static on her. It cleared up shortly after closing iTunes; she didn't have to restart the iMac. I'm at some point going to re-install iTunes off of the boot disk. Does anyone know if just that file is accessible on either of the two install disks that come with the iMac?
The iSight problem is a hardware issue. Took it to the local Apple store after trying everything I had read here to try to restart it. They jumped through the same hoops as I did with amazingly identical results. They'll replace the camera module as soon as I can afford to be without the Mac for 3 - 10 days, which won't be for a few weeks.

  • Lion Optical Audio Problem

It's an outrage truly.  Can't believe the hours I've wasted troubleshooting this problem...and it goes back at least 3 upgrades ago that my optical audio started to fail / stop working once sending DTS 5.1 via toslink.  Going back to play audio in iTunes, or anywhere, would fail / no audio.  Somehow the audio driver would lock and corrupt the system.  No amount of audiomidi setup configuration would do a thing.  Reboot was the only fix.  120 of them later....I tried a soundblaster x-fi usb bypassing the imac sound completely.  The box worked perfectly!  Except, for the exact same problem switching between the 2.  It became apparent that the os was screwed...absolutely no doubt.
I gave up and was ready to build my own dang system...sell the beautiful but broken imac to someone.
Low-and-behold, I see this small line item in the list of 10.7.1 fixes tonight - mix of rage, insult, disbelief - how on earth did perfectly working audio get broken and downgraded?
How do we learn more about this product we've purchased that is getting broken by someone, no "sorry 'bout that?", or, "by the way, to our loyal customers going through **** trying to fix their broken audio, we know, we're working on it..in the meantime, here's $25 worth of stupid app store junk, including the sickingly popular birds game for free!"
Certainly this is likely answered in the incredibly boring license agreement I never read.  "We are not responsible for hours wasted with broken software."
    Done.
    Frank

Yes, 10.7.1 appears to work (knock on particle board).  I am now able to play a video file with DTS audio, the receiver automatically switches to DTS..Then, I can quit Movist, open iTunes and play 2 channel audio..The receiver automatically switches.  Before, I would try to play regular audio and no sound.  It seems I am able to switch back and forth without corrupting the system for a reboot.
To be even more clear about my experience; Snow Leopard worked fine for this 'normal' functionality of switching audio from 5.1 to 2ch.  It was only during a subsequent update of Snow Leopard that audio broke.  It is now, nearly weeks after Lion release, that this has been addressed (a second time - the first osx update to attempt to fix optical audio problems did NOT work).
Were you able to get 5.1 before and now cannot?  What app are you using?  Do you have a 5.1 receiver?

  • Audio Problem (Quicktime) in Snow Leopard

    Audio Problem in Snow Leopard
After a install of Snow Leopard over the weekend, I have gotten everything smoothed out except for 1 item.
I can not get Quicktime to install.
I did the additional software instals that came on the DVD with SL.
I now do not have Quicktime and can not get the new one to install.
Here is the error I receive when I try to install it.
"System extension can not be used /system/Library/Extensions/CDSDAudioCaptureSupport.kext was installed impropeerly and can not be used. Please try reinstalling it or contact products vendor for an update.
I have tried to do a complete reinstall of SL and no fix.
I did a verify permissions and a repair permissions.

Thanks for the reply. What I mean is in 10.5, leopard, the page set up and print settings would not keep after printing the first file. Like say I'm in Preview with a .jpg open and I set the print setup to 4x6 borderless, which is a setting my wife uses a lot. If I print the file, which isn't a problem, save the settings for both page set up and printing preferences, close the file and open a different one, the preferences reset to whatever the default is.
I've tried going into System Preferences and tooling with the Printer set up there, but there's no setting for 4x6 borderless that I can select for a default, not in 10.5.x at least.
There were numerous threads in the 10.5 Leopard printing forum concerning this and it was an issue I hope is fixed in 10.6.

  • Outgoing Audio Problems

I have an intell iMac 2.4 GHz, with 4 GB ram. About six months ago I started to have outgoing audio problems. It's an old computer but works pretty well. Well, except for this. It doesn't matter if I use FaceTime, Google Hangout, Skype (video or just audio), the is static and screetchy noises on the receiving end. I can't hear it on my end. There is no problem with incomming audio, either through voice or video chat, or other steaming services. Can anyone help me out. What do you think this is? A simple mic problem?

Had the same problem, no audio on incoming or outgoing calls and only could hear the conversation of the call if I put on speaker. It seemed to start after I did a recent IOS update this past month. I tried restart, reset and restore of my iPhone but nothing changed. It appears not to be a software issue but a hardware problem. I got my phone this past summer so it was still under warranty and got it replaced.

  • Logic X audio problems (pop, click, stutter)

Has anyone else experienced audio problems in Logic X? This happens with just a single EXS instrument loaded. When I add notes or playback the audio signal clicks. It seems to be a buffer issue but I'm running 128 samples which doesn't seem that aggressive (especially with only a single instrument loaded). Switching to 256 samples seemed to make things better but it still hitches. I'm running on the latest generation macbook air (core i5 1.3ghz haswell, 4gb ddr3 ram, 128gb ssd) which seems like it should be plenty. Logic is 10.0.0.3 and OSX is 10.8.5 and I'm using on-board sound card. I tried on a core 2 duo macbook air with the same software versions and settings and it works flawlessly. Anyone have any ideas?

I had the same problem with my new 27-in. iMac (Late 2013) and so far it seems to have gone away after talking with Apple support today. I was getting clicks and pops about every 10 minutes and I had to either unplug and replug my Apogee Duet 2, or change the buffer size in Logic, which only provided a temporary solution.
Apple support today had me do the following:
#1 Shut down my computer and unplug everything (all USB's, external hard drives etc.)
#2 Unplug the power cord, wait 15 seconds, and plug it back in.
#3 Turn the computer back on, but as soon as you press the power button to turn it on, you have to hold Option+Command+P+R
#4 You will hear the boot-up chime (or whatever) twice, and after the second chime, let go of the keys.
#5 If you get a Mac Utility screen or something other than your normal login, shut down the computer once more and restart.
#6 Login as usual, and the problem should be fixed.
Apparently resetting the "NVRAM or PRAM" is what this does, although I don't know what it means. He also provided me with two articles to use in the case that it happens again, although he said it shouldn't:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    About NVRAM and PRAM
    Hopefully this will help.

  • Audio problems frustrating newbie!

As a newbie to Apple products I find myself frustrated with audio problems on my new iMac. In the project browser the video is fine, audio in sync, no video hesitation, but when I view the finished product in full screen mode I get audio out of sync, periods of no audio at all and freezing frames. I burned the project onto a dvd and again, although the project is perfect the dvd download is the same as the full screen preview, scenes freeze, and hesitates and there are lengthy periods of no sound. I've rechecked all aspects of voice overs, music etc, nothing seems out of whack and the movie runs perfectly in project mode. Any ideas? I've read on other forums that this is a problem with imovie11. This is not a happy introduction to Apple!

All I can say is this is by no means a bug free product. But the price is right. I've used imovie for a couple of years. When stuff happens, you can definitely post on this site because the help is very good. But at the end of the day, you have to burn cycles, step back and really analyze what the heck happened and could have cause this issue.
Video can be ******* complicated. The more complicated it gets, the more you should bite the bullet and hit the learning curve and get yourself a copy of final cut. It's a steep learning curve, but it's a serious app. I have no idea what's going on with your problem. Hope you solved it..?
    Anyhow, good luck.
BTW, Mac's are not perfect, but light years more enjoyable the Winblows and bloated operating systems of that variant. Don't throw it out the window yet.

  • Audio problems - sound delay on play - and cutting out.

I have an iMac 27" i5 - and having an audio problem in FCP 7.
There is a delay when I press start/play. At first there's no sound and after about two seconds I can hear the sound. Also when I play my sequence my sound comes and goes (cutting out) - not always at the same spot. Scrubbing is also giving me hassles - I first have to press previous- and next frame a bit (to move the play head up and down the time line) in order to hear the scrubbing frame by frame. This happens when I use internal or external speakers.
What can this be - maybe a driver update? But I'm up to date with my upgrades.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Tx!

    LOL - no worries
I don't have anything else connected to the iMac. Sometimes I have Safari or Firefox open - but I have also tested it without those programs open - no luck. I have not deleted my preferences - what's a safe way of doing that. My sequence setting matches clip settings.
Will keep a close eye on it when I start a new project - with fewer media on the timeline initially.
    Thank you for your replies.

  • Intermittent Audio Problems

I recently started having intermittent audio cut off on my IMac G5 which is 6 months old. All audio to inclue iTunes stops for no apparent reason. This even happens when I am just listening to iTunes and performing no other tasks. Sometimes requires multiple reboots to fix. I checked audio output setting and it's 44100.0 Hz as recommended. Sometimes audio will restart without a reboot. Machine has 1.5G RAM and I do not use it for anything exotic or heavy duty.
Am using a USB hub with printer, scanner and external hard drive attached. Tried disconnecting all, but problem still recurs.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Al R.

If you plug in headphones into the headphones port do the audio problems persist? I'd like to know if the issue seems to be isolated to the speakers, or to the soundchip and/or sound software.
P.S. Please note, that the iMac (Flat Panel) is actually an iMac G4. The iMac G5 posts you make in the future, please post in this forum:
