IMac Automatic Sleep Issues

Hello,
A few months ago I purchased a iMac 20" 2.66Ghz factory default model. The machine has been performing beautifully. Although I've been encountering one major issue. The iMac will manually go into sleep mode, but it will not automatically do so.
So I have tried various different methods to get this guy running properly. So far, I have tried clean reinstalling Leopard (from the restore CD's) twice, resetting the vram, the SMU, I tried different Leopard updates - including 10.5.4, 10.5.5, and 10.5.6. I do not have any third-party accessories plugged into the unit. I disabled Bluetooth since I do not use it, but Airport Extreme is always in use.
The ram, hard drive, and all factory installed hardware is showing up and working properly.
I'm stuck on what I should do. So far, the only solution has been to use a application called "PleaseSleep," which essentially forces the machine to go into sleep mode based on the designated time set in the energy saver preference panel.
I have read many other threads related to this issue here. But I am unable to find a clear solution.
Thanks!

"The iMac will manually go into sleep mode, but it will not automatically do so."
How do you have your Sleep options set in the System Preferences/EnergySaver/Sleep panel?
"the only solution has been to use a application called "PleaseSleep," which essentially forces the machine to go into sleep mode based on the designated time set in the energy saver preference panel." Third party apps that control anything in your System Preferences panel can cause more headaches they they are worth.
If you haven't tried running the Apple Hardware Test, it might be a good thing do. Process of elimination: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
"The ram, hard drive, and all factory installed hardware is showing up and working properly."
Have you actually booted from your restore disk and checked the hard disk for errors? If not..
Follow these instructions to verify the hard disk for errors:
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
Select your disk, and click First Aid.
Click Verify Disk.
If the disk needs repairs, do one of the following:
Insert your Mac OS X Install disc in your computer’s optical drive or an optical drive connected to your computer, and then restart your computer. When you hear the startup tone, hold down the C key until you see the progress indicator, which looks like a spinning gear.
Follow the onscreen instructions until the menu bar appears with the Utilities menu in it, choose Utilities > Disk Utility, click First Aid, and then click Repair Disk. When Disk Utility is finished, from the Menu Bar select Utilities/Startup Disk. Select MacintoshHD 10.5 in the window and click: Restart
If you don’t have a Mac OS X Install disc, restart your computer while holding down the Shift key. As your computer starts up, it performs a disk check similar to the one Disk Utility performs.

  • Snow Leopard 10.6.8 automatic sleep issues

    Hey,
I have a 27" Apple iMac with an i5 processor and 8GB of RAM running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I have had it for about a year and a half and for the first 15 months or so it was perfect. However in the last few months I have been having problems with automatic sleep.
When the computer was working correctly if I had set the display to sleep at 5 minutes and the computer to sleep at 15 minutes in energy saver, then if the Mac was idle it would sleep at these times. If however I was say printing a lot of pages or downloading a large file or ripping a DVD, then the computer would not sleep even if the 15 minutes had elapsed but once it had completed its task and 15 minutes had passed, it would sleep. This was great if I was leaving home or going to work as I could rely on my Mac to finish its task and then sleep and so not waste electricity.
So when the problems started, first my Mac would never sleep automatically and this was for a while fixable by simply clicking "restore defaults" in the energy saver settings. Then no matter what it would never sleep unless I set it to sleep manually and now after trying a solution from Apple care (restoring disc permissions in disc utility), the Mac sleeps once the prescribed time has elapsed no matter what I am doing be it listening to iTunes, downloading a file and so on.
In other user accounts this problem also abounds and so doesn't appear to be related to third party software. On the recommendation of an Apple care guy I reinstalled Snow Leopard from disc (the lesser install that does not erase the hard-drive and takes about 45 minutes) and after this the sleep function was working properly. However as soon as I updated the Mac to bring it up to date after the re-install, the problem started again. This gives me the impression that some update from a few months ago is causing this issue.
According to the Apple guy, there is no known solution for this and he tried to sell me a load of nonsense about using third party freeware like caffeine and please sleep to solve the problem. However these solutions are useless unless you are around to ultimately put your Mac to sleep manually and/or turn on/off the third-party software.
This may not seem like a big issue, but when I have my Mac perform many tasks while I am not present, if it stays on indefinitely afterwards, then it is really wasting a lot of electricity.
Has anyone else had this or a similar issue and found a solution? I know I could upgrade to Lion and try that, but if that doesn't work then I will have wasted €24, plus I was hoping to wait until as many of the kinks had been worked out of Lion via patches before updating.
Has anyone had any experience with trying to get Apple to replace a computer that is still under Apple Care warranty over a year after purchase as if it continues, my Mac has lost a LOT of its functionality for what I need it to do and I am no longer happy with it.
    Thanks.

Your post is pretty lengthy and I have to admit I didn't read it all. Please try restarting in Safe Mode, if that doesn't work please do both a SMC and PRAM reset. These may take 2-3 attempts.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • 24" iMac intel--Sleep issues--simple as widgets

Had major sleep issue with brand new new gorgeous 24" intel 2.8 imac. It wouldn't autosleep no matter what I did--reset PRAM, SMU, archive and install, checked console logs, etc. After some common sense thought, I figured it might be a really simple thing. So, I turned off three of the animated widgets (the aquarium, the CPU monitor, and the beach scene). I tried each one individually, and any one of the three had sufficient CPU activity to prevent sleep. After deleting the three of them, everything was fine, and it now sleeps like a baby.

My pleasure--one of the dead giveaways was that my Macbook Pro 15 Core duo had the same apps and files, but she lacked some of the widgets, and it slept perfectly from day one. This is my 5th Mac, and I know that some third party applications are often more damaging than they are positive. Widgets are not necessarily tested for compatibility with the system files of all models.

I can't seem to get my iMac (late 2009 model) into automatic sleep mode.  If I manually put it into sleep I don't have any issues.
I used to solve the issue by running "PleaseSleep" application but that doesn't work anymore since Lion. I now want to fix the underlying problem.
I'm not running any weird background processes and in my energy saver settings I've tagged "put the hard disk to sleep when possible:, "allow power button to put computer to sleep" and "automatically reduce brigthness". All pretty standard.
Is there anyone who can give me some pointers ?

Today I solved the same problem for my iMac running Snow Leopard. See https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3008791#15947706. The method may help you, too.
For me it was the DynDNS Updater preventing my iMac from automatically entering sleep mode.
To my knowledge the cause of this sleep problem can only be a peripheral device or a process. So I suggest to first unplug all peripherals and test whether that's the cause. If not, I suggest to terminate one process after another and to test automatic entering of sleep mode after each. Start with user processes; continue with system process if necessary.
At least that's the way I found the offending process. Fortunately, I was able to change the configuration of that process to allow again automatic entering of sleep mode.
    Good luck!

  • Odd iMac sleep issues

I first noticed the issues a couple of weeks ago - mid-2007 iMac, running SL.
The iMac will sleep fine if I use the command in the apple menu or the power button.
But it won't sleep automatically as suggested in the Energy Saving preference pane. If I select the 'sleep' keyboard combination (option, command, eject), the iMac sleeps but instantly wakes again.
I've tried everything! These problems aren't due to peripherals - it was working fine with the same peripherals connected. Wake for LAN isn't selected, nor is the wake for BT option (and I don't have any BT devices). I've looked in Activity Monitor and Console and can't find any obvious process that might be keeing the Mac awake. I've tried restoring plists from a TM backup, deleting plists, resetting the PRAM and SMC.  One of these measures (not sure which one) worked ONCE. But when I went into the energy saving preference pane, it stopped sleeping automatically again.
My main concern is the lack of auto-sleep. I've scoured the forums and no one seems to have this problem together with the mac waking instantly after the sleep keyboard combo. I'm hoping this peculiar combination of probems might shed some light on what's causing them.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can be very hard to impossible to track down auto sleep issues. Just get PleaseSleep.

  • Sleep issues with iMac

I have an iMac, first gen, that when I put into sleep mode, it will wake up right away. All software is up to date, running 10.6.8.

Test after each of the following steps:
    Step 1
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Power Adapter ▹ Wake for network access: uncheck. You may need to unlock the preference pane by clicking the lock icon in the lower left corner and entering your administrator password.
    Step 2
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Schedule… ▹ Start up or wake: uncheck
    Step 3
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Print & Scan ▹ Open Print Queue...
Check all printers for unfinished jobs. Deal with any you find.
    Step 4
Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse or trackball, and monitor, if applicable.
    Step 5
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Enter “powerd” (without the quotes) in the "Filter" text field. Select the powerd process and click the Quit Process button in the toobar (stop-sign icon.) In the sheet that opens, click Force Quit. You’ll be prompted for your administrator password. The process will be relaunched immediately.
    Step 6
Boot in safe mode and log in. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal. Don’t launch any applications at first. If sleep still doesn’t work properly, back up all data and reinstall the Mac OS. After that, if you still have the issue, make a “Genius” appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
If sleep now works as expected, go on to the next step.
    Step 7
Still in safe mode, launch the usual set of applications that are running when you have the problem, including your login items, one at a time, testing after each one. Some applications may not work; skip them. You might be able to identify the cause of the problem this way.
    Step 8
If sleep is still working after you’ve launched all the usual applications, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and test again. If sleep still works, you’re done, at least for the moment.
If you still have the sleep issue after booting out of safe mode, post again.

  • Intel-Based iMac never sleeps automatically

I can't remember when this started happening, because I would often leave downloads running overnight, and I set Transmission to keep the computer awake. But now, even on a fresh boot, the computer won't go to sleep by itself.
It sleeps fine if I press command - option - eject or the power button, or even from the menu, but it does not want to go to sleep without help.

    Hi sebastian406
First reset the iMac's SMC as described in the article below:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543?viewlocale=en_US
Then if it still won't auto sleep move on to the next article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1776?viewlocale=en_US
As you can see in the article there are lot of things like connected devices HD, iPod, etc. or the sharing services of the Internet and iDisk that can cause auto sleep issue's.

  • Sleep Issues with g5 Imac

I have a g5 iMac running OsX Panther. 1.6 Ghz with 256 Ram.
Anyways, the computer randomly and frequently goes to sleep. The hot corners are not set for that, infact in the settings i've set it to never go to sleep. Some days, like in the last hour, the computer will go to sleep, i wake it up, and within a minute, it goes back to sleep. Some days it wont go to sleep at all. The problem seems to be truely random. The only programs running are Entourage, Safari and Adium, sometimes Itunes and Filemaker.
Has anyone heard of a problem like this before? Any tips or trouble shooting ideas?
    Thanks.

First read Apple doc.#25801 on sleep settings.
A number of sleep-related issues can appear after incremental Mac OSX updates, including the inability to properly go to sleep, problems waking from sleep, and having your display go to sleep without your Mac going to sleep. The most common culprit is Bluetooth. Try these tips to fix your sleep problems.
    WAKE UP
In System Preferences>Bluetooth, uncheck Allow Bluetooth Devices To Wake This Computer. If you are using a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, you'll have to wake your Mac by pressing the power button.
    FILE CORRUPTION
Your Bluetooth preference file may be corrupt-you'll need to delete it. Turn Bluetooth off, then go to the /Users/user name/Library/Preferences folder. Look for a file called com.apple.Bluetooth.plist and trash it.The OS will create a new preference file when you enable Bluetooth again.
    ENERGY SAVER
If you have issues with a Mac or display that goes to sleep at inappropriate times, you may have a problem with Energy Saver. Delete the following .plist files and restart:
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
-/Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist--(username is your name or System Administrators name).
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
A restart is very important after deleting these plists. After a reboot your Mac will then generate new ones.
Some, in these forums, have had luck fixing sleep issues downloading the Combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.
Yours could be the 10.3.9 Combo update (you did'nt say what version you are using). Others reading, download the combo update that applies to you!
    Cheers!

  • 10.6.4 Update - 21.5" Imac no longer automatically sleep

After installing the 10.6.4 update my 21.5" imac now no longers go to sleep automatically. Its set to 15 minutes and was working fine yesterday. Now it just goes to a screensaver.
Anyone else got any ideas on how to resolve this?

    Bonjour,
After a long search on the web and a deep intervention in my system, I've found the culprit.
I tested then uninstalled 1Password but some files remained on the following directories,
~/Library/LaunchAgents Per-user agents provided by the user.
/Library/LaunchAgents Per-user agents provided by the administrator.
/Library/LaunchDaemons System-wide daemons provided by the administrator. /System/Library/LaunchAgents Per-user agents provided by Mac OS X.
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons System-wide daemons provided by Mac OS X.
preventing the iMac from sleeping and prompting error messages in the Console.
Have you tested an application then removed it, but the installation process wasn't clean enough? The Console could give you a hit.
The case is closed for me.
    Good luck!

  • Won't automatically sleep with energy saver

Brand-new iMac will not automatically sleep, but will sleep on demand. Display sleeps, but hard drive stays on.
I'm not completely computer-savvy, but I've searched through other threads regarding this issue and tried the following:
    - deleted com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
    - reset SMC
    - tried with a new admin account
    - reset PRAM/NVRAM
    - disconnected peripherals
    - repaired file permissions
    - Bluetooth settings: changed to not discoverable, turned off bluetooth sharing. I still need it on though bc my KB and mouse are wireless
Not really sure what the Console/system log stuff is, but I looked in there and saw this over and over:
    +May 23 09:43:45 greatwhitehope com.apple.launchd[1] (com.google.keystone.daemon[394]): bootstrap_register() erroneously called instead of bootstrapcheckin(). Mach service: com.google.Keystone.Daemon+
    +May 23 09:43:45 greatwhitehope com.apple.launchd[1] (com.google.keystone.daemon[394]): Exited with exit code: 1+
    +May 23 09:43:45 greatwhitehope com.apple.launchd[1] (com.google.keystone.daemon): Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds+
So I turned off Google Notifier. Didn't work.
It works with Please Sleep... but I just got this computer and it kind of ****** me off that it won't auto-sleep.
Can anyone please help or offer other suggestions?

I have the same problem and I've already contacted Apple about it. We've tried the same solutions as listed above and some more. Finally I had to record my system info during the problem (with Capture Data) and I've sent it to Apple.
The good news is that they know the problem and they are working on a solution.
The bad news is that I've bought my computer in February, I immedeately reported the problem, and there does not seem to be any progress. I contacted Apple again early May and they told me I should wait
I'll try the Sleep apps that are suggested above because it's extremely irritating the have your computer awake with fan and all when you want to sleep yourself.

  • TS4209 When i wake up my iMac from sleep my wifi is disconnected.  It also disconnects my iPad, my wives iPad, my iPhone & Sky On Demand which is connected via wifi. To reconnect all devices i have to switch off & then on again wifi on the iMac. Can anyon

When i wake up my iMac from sleep my wifi is disconnected.  It also disconnects my iPad, my wives iPad, my iPhone & Sky On Demand which is connected via wifi. To reconnect all devices i have to switch off & then on again wifi on the iMac. Can anyone help?

Had the same issue and finally solved it.  After the upgrade to Mavericks our 2 new Macbook Airs stopped connecting automatically to Wifi while the older machines the kids had still worked fine.
Bought a new airport extreme and problem solved.   Our Airport Extreme was about 5 years old and was probably not compatible with the new OSX.
BTW this was after trying everything people suggested on this forum and a 4 hour marathon tech support call with Apple where we reinstalled the OSX.
***** to need to spend $200 but glad the problem got solved.
New extreme is also mega fast so its all good.

  • IMac i7 sleep problems

So I've been pretty happy with my iMac i7 so far but in the last few days, I've been having some issues with the sleep function.
I first noticed an issue where I couldn't wake my iMac back up from sleep. The screen wouldn't turn on after pressing a bunch of buttons on the keyboard or clicking the mouse and I would end up having to reboot the computer entirely.
The second issue with the sleep function happened this morning. I tried to manually sleep my iMac before going to work and it just refused to sleep. The automatic sleep seemed like it still worked however as the computer went to sleep later (after a few minutes of inactivity).
They're not major issues but I am definitely concerned...anyone else have (or had) this problem?

As the first steps, try resetting PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
and if that does not help, reset SMC
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
which is basically disconnecting all cables and power, and reconnecting using a precise procedure. When you reconnect the power, consider where it is plugged in. If it is through an over-crowded or old power strip (surge suppressor), you might want to try connecting it directly to the wall outlet (or by itself through a new power strip), at least initially. Power it up with nothing connected, except for the power cord. Then, connect just the standard keyboard/mouse (if not wireless); use it that way for a while. Try doing things that did not work properly before. If the problems do not recur, you can start adding your peripheral (USB/FireWire) devices; do it one by one if possible. If the problem recurs, note what device was added last. Peripheral devices can interfere with sleep, wake, shutdown, and startup.

  • UPS and our iMac // Will not allow iMac to sleep.

    Hello,
We have a Cyberpower UPS (CP685AVR) for our 20" iMac 2.66Ghz (last gen)and it works great. It has a USB interface to communicate with the iMac's power manager, and tells me how much juice is left, how the cells are doing, etc.
The only problem is the UPS will not allow the iMac to sleep; if I try to manually put it to sleep, it will wake again in 10-15sec. If I disconnect the UPS, the iMac works just fine. There are no third-party drivers, either. Cyberpower relies on Apple's built-in UPS support. I've been leaving the USB cable unplugged but would like like to use it if possible.
Has anyone had an issue like this, and what has been your experience? Thanks.

I won't buy Cyberpower anymore since I had one burn up on me so I have not had any experience with their newer models. I have 2 APC's and they work fine with the built in Energy Saver settings.
Are you connecting the USB directly to the back? I'm not sure if it will help but you might try resetting the SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543?viewlocale=en_US

  • Macbook Pro and external monitor sleep issues.

I recently upgraded to a new 13 inch MacBook Pro to replace my previous one.  With the upgrade, I'm now on the latest OS and I have a Thunderbolt instead of Mini-displayport output.  I have a Dell U2410 monitor which has worked great up until now, but I now have the following behavior:
When the laptop sleeps (or puts the display to sleep) the monitor begins to turn on and off.  It goes to powersave mode and immediately wakes up, realizes there's no signal, and goes back to powersave mode, etc etc etc.
When I wake the computer up from sleep, the monitor's behavior stays the same.  The laptop never detects the display and begins sending a signal.
If I unplug and replug the adapter, all is well.
There seem to be two separate issues: whatever signal the computer continues to send down the display cable after sleep seems to confuse my monitor, secondly, the computer never again sends a real video signal down the line after it wakes up.
I'm on the latest 10.8.3.  My adapter is the same adapter I have been using for years, an apple mini-display port to DVI adapter.  Supposedly this adapter is still compatible with the Thunderbolt port.
I've seen lots of issues online about wake up issues with the latest OS.  Is there a workaround for this yet or do I have to uplug my monitor anytime I sleep the computer?

    Hi Steve,
I have had the exact same issues after adding a WD Thunderbolt Duo external drive to a Mid 2011 iMac and then daisy chaining the Dell U2410 monitor off that.
My Mini DP to DVI cable ceased working properly - sleeps issues.
After buying one of these adapters of Ebay:
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/3-in-1-Mini-Displayport-to-HDMI-with-audio-DVI-DP-ada pter-3in1-convertor-Macbook-/110861703462?pt=US_Audio_Cables_Adapters&hash=item1 9cfdf5926
I then tried all the different cables that came originally with the Dell U2410 with that adapter, and none of then would put the U2410 to sleep properly. The backlight would stay on, or "No Displayport Cable" would float around the Dell display with the backlighting still on. Or otherwise the Dell would try to go to sleep and then wake up again and cycle like you found.
Apples Mini DP to VGA adapter was sleep successful with the VGA cable (Analogue) but the output picture was not as sharp as DVI or Displayport, plus there was RF interference with the cable.
After lots of internet searching I have found a near perfect solution:
A HDMI to DVI cable with the HDMI end connected to the Ebay 3 in 1 adapter, which then connects to the Thunderbolt port.
Connect this to DVI-D 1 on the Dell U2410.
On the Dell in Menu - Other Settings,  disable DDC/CI
Now in OSX Settings - energy Saver you will have to tick:
"Put Hard Disks to sleep where possible" and select a short time frame for "Computer Sleep"
I have found that the display would go black but the backlighting on the Dell U2410 would stay on, when the display went to sleep on the Mac as per the Energy Saver "Display Sleep" setting.
The backlighting on the Dell would only turn off when the time for 'Computer Sleep" has elapsed and the external Thunderbolt hard disk went to sleep as well.
The Dell U2410 would then wake up correctly as well when my iMac woke, with this setup.
Cheapest solution for you would be to try an Apple or Ebay HDMI to DVI adapter and then use the DVI - DVI cable that came with the Dell.
If that fails get the 3 in one Adapter and use my Mini DP/Thunderbolt to Ebay Adapter to DVI-DVI cable setup.
I'm assuming your new Macbook Pro comes with the HDMI port ?
I believe the Sleep Issues with this monitor are all related to appropriate signal on the cable, and only the HDMI to DVI solution will work correctly on Mac's connected to the Dell U2410.
    Good Luck. :-)

  • WD Elements External Hard Drive: No Sleep Issue

    Hello,
I know this probably isn't the best place for this as it's not directly related to an iMac. But it works.
I have two WD Elements (http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=304&lang=en) external hard drives that I use for a Time Machine and for a Media drive. I've got them plugged into a Belkin Powered USB Hub (http://store.apple.com/us/product/TW306LL/A) which is then of course attatched to my iMac. My issue is that the two hard drives seem to continue to work at full power once I've shut my computer off.
Is there anyway I can have them go into sleep mode?
I was considering splicing a switch onto the power cord of the USB Hub so that I could easily turn it off once the computer is off. However that seems a bit silly?
Thank you for your time, and opinions,
    Robin

Thanks for the suggestion. I can't believe I didn't think about that as I knew about it.
It seems to have helped when the computer is on. I can see that at some points they are working a lot less, which is great. So thank you.
Unfortunately they seem to be still working at full power them the computer is off. I figure this is because they are not directly attatched to the computer itself so nothing is telling them to "sleep."
