Then goes back to normal for a while. Then back to the problem. During a normal day it can do this 2-3 times.
anyone know whats going on. I've checked the keyboard and the keys are not faulty.

and how have you done that?
From your description it sounds exactly like the keyboard is faulty.
It sounds to me like the key is sticking - occasionally after using the key it doesn't release correctly, giving the signal that it's still depressed. This can be caused by many problems, from dirt under the key to faulty electronics.
I'm willing to bet this is a problem with the keyboard. Do you have another keyboard you can try?

  • Some applications behave as though modifier keys are pressed

I am experiencing occasions when some applications behave as though modifier keys are being pressed (ie Command Key, Option Key and Shift Key). At first I thought the problem was isolated to Adobe Creative Suite Applications but have now found that MYOB is also affected. I have tried multiple keyboards (even no keyboard) so I do not believe it is a keyboard hardware problem. I am running on the hardware and software listed below.
When the problem occurs it immediately affects all applications listed below in the way described. Many other applications appear unaffected. The only way I have found to fix the problem is to reboot the machine. After rebooting, the problem may not reoccur for several days, or may reoccur within half an hour. This problem has been occurring since some time in December 2010. I have also confirmed that none of the behaviour listed below occurs when the problem isn't present.
    Affected Applications & Observed Behaviour:
    - Adobe Photoshop CS4: All tools behave as though the option key is being pressed (rendering them unusable).
    - Adobe Dreamweaver CS4: When clicking on the contents of an open file, Dreamweaver behaves as though Cmd+Opt is pressed (ie the code navigator appears making the program unusable)
    - All applications in Adobe CS4 Suite: Upon startup, each application behaves as though CmdOptShift is pressed (resets preferences).
    - MYOB: When the cursor is in a data field, the delete key behaves as though the option key is pressed (ie entire field is deleted rather than a single character)
I have been working with Adobe telephone support without success for about 3 weeks but since noticing the problem also affects MYOB, it now seems feasible that it is caused by something outside of the Adobe Creative Suite.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Leon,
You are not alone - I sometimes suffer a similar issue and I don't use any Adobe software. For me, it manifests itself as modifier keys being pressed in Safari, Mail or Finder. This normally happens shortly after a wake from sleep. I'm using an old-style Bluetooth Apple keyboard on a Mac Pro 1,1. I can't tell you what causes it, but I can tell you the solution that I've found: If I relaunch Finder the problem goes away...
To relaunch Finder (apologies if you already know this), press 'Cmd-Option-Escape', select 'Finder' and click relaunch. For some reason the seemingly stuck modifier is cleared. It's not an terribly elegant solution, but it is a lot quicker and less disruptive than rebooting.
    Hope that helps a little.

  • Option key on iMac behaving as Command key and vice versa

I have a Logitech wireless keyboard mouse combo that has worked just fine on my iMac 5 until today. The option key is behaving as the command key should (e.g. Option Q will quit an applciation while Command Q comes up with "œ"). On System Prefs>Logitech Control Center I show as being configured for a Mac, not Windows. This switch happened just after I changed the logitech mouse tracking speed multiplier. I suspect it's a logitech problem but I'm hoping there's a Mac user who can come to my rescue by telling me how to switch the functions back to their proper configuration.

I think it's the same in Leopard as it is in SL and Lion.  Look in System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard tab > Modifier Keys..  > Check or change settings here:

  • Command Key has to be released and pressed each time, holding down command key for multiple commands ignoring all after first keystroke.  Have tried this in safe mode - still broken.

This problem has just cropped up - pretty sure it's after the 10.7.3 upgrade.
Scenario: I'm in pages and I'm doing a search. I need to find multiple instances of my search word.
I hold down the command key and press the 'g' key - for find again. It works.
While still holding down the command key - I hit the 'g' key again to do another find again. But instead of executing teh find again, hitting teh 'g' key the sdecond time types "g' over last search item found, acting as if teh command key was not still pessed.
This is happening in DreamWeaver CS5.5, the latest Pages, and the latest BBEdit. Haven't checked all apps.
This IS NOT a problem in the finder though - where command-tabbing brings up the app list properly, and tabs through while holding down teh command key and repeatedly hitting the tab key.
I restarted in safe mode. Still a problem.
First I cleaned the command key, then re-seating the key. I swapped keyboards, Still a problem.
Did a PRAM reset, which didn't fix anything.
I can't find any other post regarding this issue. Been using the mac for over 25 years and I've never seen this one.

This turns out to be a problem with my KVM switcher. The USB port on the switcher for the keyboard is failing - hence the intermittent reaction to the command-key presses.
I connected the keyboard directly to my mac and the problem was resolved - sorry I didn't check that before I posted this.

  • Why does my firefox intermittently (and seemingly randomly) behave as though my control key is stuck on, even though my keyboard behaves normally in every other program? AND it will also randomly change my keyboard mapping to an international one.

I will be using firefox, and for some reason, it behaves as though control key is being held down. If i use the mouse wheel, the page zooms. If I press the letter 'o', the "Open file..." dialog opens. But I'm not holding control. If, while this is happening, I switch to another application like Notepad, it behaves normally. But then I'll go back to firefox and the problem is still there. It seems to randomly start and stop.
Also, in a possibly related problem, my keyboard mapping will change from my default US to some other foreign mapping where shift-6 incorrectly outputs '?' instead of '^', for example.

  • Right Command key shortcut is behaving badly

This is only happening with the right command key. Press the key and the whole desktop shrinks and reverts to black. At the same time if an app window is open - that window shrinks. This may have started when trying to make Mission Control act like spaces. I want to Command Click right or left arrow to make the desktop change to another open app. Just like spaces used to work. I have gone through all options in Mission Control and Keyboard shortcuts. Nothing corrects my apparant error in assigning shortcuts. I have tried resetting every keyboard setting to default with no luck.Have run out of ideas and airspeed.

Found it. Amazing how things come together when you click on the Qustions Mark at lower right in System preferences. It is all there in help. I deleted all custom keys, started over. All is well. Love Lion and Mission Control

  • Move tool and command key in photoshop 2014.2 is driving me mad

    Hi all,
I'm extremely frustrated with the new move tool in the 2014.2 update. I can no longer able to isolate a selected layer and move it about by holding down command key. Instead every time by holding down command key (while move tool is selected), it'll toggle between layer and group selection. So when you drag, instead of just moving the isolated layers, it'll toggle group and drag the entire group.
Does anyone know how can I revert this back to the good old days or how do I revert back to 2014.1 version.
    Many thanks

I was greeted with the same frustration this morning. Talked to a coworker and found a way around the update.
    Turn OFF auto-select (I know, it’s a bummer)
Command click layers on your canvas -OR- just select the subfolders and multiple layers in the layers palette.
Drag those selected multiple layers around (no need to hold any key down or aim mouse over layers)
To deselect layers, command click outside canvas
Looks like the update is forcing us to press “Command” PRIOR (instead of during) the move action. Hope it helps, coworker said not using auto-select prevent him to move things by accident.

  • Ibook command key changed command   comma opens finder preferences?

My kids were playing with my ibook 2.13 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and somehow they changed the command key to command + comma. Now when the command key is pressed the finder preferences or if in an application is open the preferences open this also happens when the comma key is pressed. I've looked everywhere on the web but can't find and answer.

Does this happen with both Command keys ?.
Either way : start in Recovery mode then choose 'Get help online' (there's no need to connect to a network)
    Safari should open.
Press the command key : does preferences open, as before ?.
If so, it would seem to be a hardware problem, since the limited Recovery system & included Safari can't be modified by settings changed when started normally.
Restart your computer to return to normal mode.

  • Faulty keyboard - as though the command key is permanently pressed

My Macbook has suddenly started behaving as though the Command key is permanently pressed down. Both of the keys actually feel normal when pressed - neither of them is stuck.
Any ideas of how to fix this problem (I've tried a shut down)?
If I cannot fix it, is a replacement keyboard something I could fit myself - will an Apple Retail Store be able to supply a replacement keyboard? (it's the first version of the white MacBook, out of warranty).

OK problem solved. It was a wireless keyboard that had been left switched on and had junk piled onto it so the Apple key was pressed down.
    Panic over!

    Hi Moe,
Sounds mostly likje a bad KB, do you have another to test with?
    Or...
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

Believe it or not, it was the FireWire drive that was the problem! I managed to successfully install Windows 7 using an external USB DVD drive!
Well I am truly staggered, I have tried this on two different MacBook Pros, with three different external USB optical drives. Don't know if you googled as I suggested but you would find hundreds of others who have found same thing. The exception is MacBook Air which works with the Apple writer, but I don't know much about this.
Were you doing any of the special workarounds with refedit etc?
    What model USB DVD drive?
