IMac Black Screen with fans running...Static damage?

Upgraded the RAM and replaced the Superdrive in my late 2006 17" core duo imac last week.  It was on and worked perfectly for a week and now the screen went black but the fans stay on.  If I damaged it with static a week ago would it just now exhibit?

In addition to reseating or repalcing the RAM do a
SMC RESET
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
Wait 15 seconds.
Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
The 5 second timing is important to a successful reset.

  • Black screen with fans running fast!

    iMac A1311
I just got an iMac from a neighbor moving, when i turn on the computer, the screen stays black then the chime plays and after about 5 sec the fans kick in at full speed and stay at that speed.
I did the most common steps for resetting and nothing, also checked the ram and no luck. Next step i took was to open the computer looked for any loose connections also nothing, the 4 LED status lights are all on too.
    Thanks. Appreciate any help.

  • G5 start up problem: stuck at grey screen with fans running full strength

hi, i'm new to discussions, so i hope this question and my technical knowledge and descriptions will be OK: problem: G5 20" stuck at grey screen with fans running full strength..
so far i've tried but did not work:
    - power off by pressing the button for 5 secs,
    - checked all cables connections etc, take out the power cable try again, etc.
    - removed all USB connections, re-did
    - tried to use it as 'target drive' connected to my macbook by firewire
    - tried to start up and keeping C key pressed
    - tried to start up with 'shift' key pressed
    - tried to start up with command, options, P and R keys pressed,
    - i had an additional RAM, i've taken it out and tried again, no luck
    - i've put in Mac OS X install disc1, no luck, and now disc is inside my iMac, can't take it out
    any recommendations? thank you!

    Scroto,
You may not actually have a bad processor. On the Dual G5's it's not uncommon after a few years for dust and corrosion to build up between the processors and their sockets. You can fairly easily remove the processors and clean the connections yourself if you're at all handy. Basically, snap off the heatsink covers, loosen a few screws and the processor and heatsink come out as a unit.
Clean the contacts on the processors (carefully). And clean the sockets. Be sure to put the same processor in the same place or you'll have issues.
I used 90% isopropol alcohol to clean mine last year. Let it air dry and blew both the socket and the cpu off after with canned air. That done, I reinstalled the processors, buckled everything up and no more "bad" processor... The machine worked perfectly from then on and I assume it still does today. Don't know, someone stole it last month:(...

  • Black screen and fan running full- bore

Computer was running fine when I closed the lid (no shutdown) to put it to sleep for the night. Next morning as usual I opened the lid but the screen showed no signs of waking up. The battery was apparently dead so I plugged it in. Pushed the power button and the fan came on full-bore and the screen never showed a sign of coming to life. Restart, no help. Attempted to zap the PRAM but no signs that the key commands were recognized. (2 month old keyboard after the computer took a nasty fall and the old one popped out damaging the ribbon cable connector). Inserted a disk I thought would allow the computer to boot off of, it did some spinning but no change in computer's operational status. Eject button or key commands now fail to get the CD out. The only way to restart is to press power button until computer goes off then press again to start. The fan just keeps on running but nothing on the screen.
Connected computer to external monitor, no help, even after restarting. The monitor is connected to a G4 platinum tower so I know it works.
I also don't see a way to eject the inserted CD manually as command E, eject button, won't eject it.
I'm at a loss! First time a Mac has gotten the best of me. None of my years of little trick gathering has helped.

I tried holding down the trackpad button (forever), no help.
Was the computer all the way off (no lights, fan, sounds, etc.)?
Hold down the power button for ten seconds to shut everything off. If that doesn't do the trick, unplug the power adapter and remove the main battery. Then put them back, hold down the trackpad button, and start up. Is your CD ejected this time? If not, shut everything down again.
If it's a bootable CD, try booting to it after resetting the PRAM: hold down the p and r keys while starting up, and keep holding them down until you've heard three or four startup chimes (if you hear any). After the chimes, release those keys and immediately press the c key to force the PB to try to start up from the CD. Any luck? If the CD isn't a bootable one, of course there's no point in trying this step.
I tried restarting in the firmware mode (command, option, O, F), no help.
I don't know anything about that, so I'm no help with it either.
Before the black screen problem I noticed the battery would run down to zero overnight when the lid was closed and computer was sleeping. I'm not sure this is normal.
Definitely NOT normal, and this is undoubtedly a clue to what's wrong. Something is allowing the battery to drain when it shouldn't. (Batteries, actually, since the backup battery will also drain completely within 10-15 minutes after the main battery, if no AC adapter is connected.) This strongly suggests a short circuit to me. But tell me: do you always leave the Powerbook sleeping on battery power overnight, without the AC adapter connected? Or does the battery drain even with the adapter connected? That would point to a fault in the adapter or in the charging circuitry inside the Powerbook.
A short circuit might leave marks on the surfaces that are coming into contact and shouldn't be. Check the inside of the bottom panel, the logic board surface components, the underside of the keyboard, and whatever else you can see for visible signs of shorting. If you can see that something has been shorting against the inside of the bottom panel, as has occasionally been reported here, cover the affected spot with a small piece of electrical tape to insulate it. Tighten all visible screws — you'll need Phillips #0 and Torx #8 drivers. Look for empty screw holes: a screw wandering around loose inside could cause untold damage.
My AC adapter appears to work fine, it, like the battery, is only a couple of months old. Thing ringlight shows normally.
By "normally," do you mean orange while charging, green when the battery is fully charged, and never flashing, red, or off? That's what normal is.
If you haven't tried to recharge your internal backup battery as described in step 6 of the "Testing Backup Battery" article I linked above, do. Of course you won't be able to see or set the date and time or verify that the battery has been charged, but you can at least do what is supposed to charge it and hope for the best. Again, if it is discharged and hasn't been recharged in the course of all your machinations so far, everything else you do is doomed to fail until it gets recharged.
If after that nothing has changed, you might try disconnecting the backup battery from the logic board. Doing so will sometimes allow a PB to start up that has been prevented from doing so by a stone-dead backup battery. Consult the iFixit Guide for your particular Tibook model to find out exactly where the backup battery connector is in it. In my 1GHz Tibook, it's a small white connector under the right-hand Shift key, with red, white and black wires attached.
If none of this helps, I'm afraid you're due for a trip to the repair shop.

  • Black Screen After Fans Run at Maximum

    Hello,
I inherited an iMac and it an issue. It boots up fine but within the first five minutes the fans start to slowly ramp up to full speed. After about five to ten minutes of the fans running at full speed the screen goes black and I lose control of the computer. I cannot see anything on the screen, not even the cursor moving. I am also not able to shut down the computer using keyboard shortcuts. I have to hold down the power button.
The computer actually is still working to some degree after the screen goes blank because I have had a video playing from a USB stick and I could still hear the audio after the screen blacked out. I once had a Youtube video playing via the WiFi and when the screen went black the sound stopped.
I took the computer apart thinking that maybe it was full of dust. There was very little dust and blowing it out did not make a difference.
I have done a SMC reset and and a NVRAM reset and neither made a difference.
I installed a temperature monitor and the following is the output in degrees F a little before the computer goes to a black screen:
    AC/DC Supply: 99
    Airport Card: 141
    Ambient Air: 76
    CPU Heatsink: 93
    GPU Die: 262
    GPU Heatsink: 254
    GPU Proximity: 223
    Hard Drive Body: 102
    LCD Proximity 94
    Misc: 103
    Optical Drive: 99
When the computer is running properly all four diagnostic LEDs on the logic board are lit. When the display goes black LED number 4 turns off leaving the other 3 on. Based on the Mac diagnostic instructions, if the fourth LED is off the issue is with the LCD panel or there is no video signal being generated.
I suspect that the video card is not working properly due to the high temperatures. It looks like the heat from the die is making it to the heatsink so I think that the thermal paste on the GPU is okay.
The computer is an iMac model EMC2134
    OS X 10.8.5
24" Core 2 Duo with ATI Radeon HD2600 256 MB video card
I also ran EtreCheck and the output is below.
I would like to repair the computer even though it is old. I however do not want to bring it in to a repair shop. What do you think is the issue and what leads you to that conclusion?
    Thank you,
    jbr

As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosened. i have iphoto previously installed. running  but when i have synced my iphone4 the iphoto app. cant be launched anymore. a black screen with the hourglass running till it quits automatically.  What should be the problem???

Try the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your HD/User/Home/() Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your HD/User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.

while i was running boot camp to install windows 7 i had to cancel operation. Now my mac comes up black screen with a curser at top

First of all, start your Mac with the Alt key pressed until the boot manager apears. If your keyboard is wireless probably you should press the power button at the same time you start the Mac.
After, go to Bootcamp Assistant and remove the windows partition and do all the process again.
Remember to remove all the USB/Firewire/Thunderbolt devices that are attached to the Mac during the windows installation.
Once windows boots for first time, install windows support software with all the drivers.
IMPORTANT: If the windows partition doesn't boot correctly (Black screen with white blinking cursos at the left top corner) do this steps to boot windows:
1- Start the Windows Installation DVD at system start.
2- Click on Repair System, not install.
    3- Select Command Prompt
4- Run these 3 commands: (Press enter for each command)
         Bootrec.exe /FixMbr
         Bootrec.exe /FixBoot

  • IPhone OS 2.0 at Black Screen with Apple Logo, Apps crash and not run

Apple Support: Do not delete this. I am complying with your requests. According to your T&C, I must state my problems in question form to ask the community or your teams for help in a constructive way. I believe my original post was only playfully negative, but since I am complying now, I would expect that you do not delete this, otherwise you're simplying just trying to put spin on a buggy release. PLEASE HELP. I have not heard back from Feedback, and phone support continually says to RESTORE the phone, which only solves these problems for a few hours.
    1) My iPhone OS 2.0 is very slow, even with a virgin restore with no apps or synchronized content.
    2) My iPhone OS 2.0 reboots at random times.
    3) My PURCHASED applications crash randomly, under unreproducible conditions.
    4) Free applications crash randomly.
    5) My iPhone OS 2.0 will not boot after an irregular interval of reboots, showing only the black screen with the apple logo. Letting this sit for 8 hours simply drains the battery until it goes pitch black. POWER+DOWN_ARROW and an iTunes restore is the only way to recover. This process takes hours to complete.
I have gone several days without a working phone while away from the iTunes at home to restore my contacts and other data vital to the operation of my business, not to mention a phone that actually works to make and receive calls.
As stated in the previous post, I'm a loyal Apple customer, and have spent considerable time evangelizing the brand, and have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars by purchasing Apple laptops instead of Dell.
Can you please tell me how to solve this? If there is no firmware problem, please give me a real solution to fix this. I am not the only one with this problem.
    Thank you in advance,
    Kevin

Many of us have this problem. I've had it several times now.
The only way to fix it, is to restore the iPhone.
I know it seems like it wont boot, or wont do anything, but it will... just do this.
Start Itunes. Turn off the iPhone, now put it in the dock or plug it into the USB cable, WHILE holding the top button on the phone down. Keep holding it down. It will then show a connect cable icon on the phone. It should show up in iTunes at this point. Proceed to restore the phone per screen instructions.
Once its back up and booting and working etc...
MAKE SURE... you DO NOT... install any application or delete any application on your iphone. IF you dare do so.... MAKE ABSOLUTELY certain you do not do ANYTHING at the same time. That means NEVER DL an app from itunes store on your phone, and while it is installing, ... avoid clicking on anything, touching the phone, starting a different app, going back to the itunes store...
In other words... If you try to multitask... it causes some weird bug.

  • Windows xp install -- black screen with no cursor

I've seen a number of posts about Boot Camp installation problems involving a black screen with a blinking cursor, but my problem is simply with a black screen. On my MacBook Pro 15" Core 2 Duo (graphics card: ATY,RadeonX1600) I'm able to partition the HD, but then after I'm prompted in Boot Camp to insert the Windows XP install disk, the computer attempts to restart and install, but after a flash of grey screen, the screen goes totally black, and eventually the optical drive powers down (after whirring for a while) -- no cursor, no nothing. I've tried a number of suggestions I've seen elsewhere: my firmware seems up-to-date (at least that's what I'm told when I try to run both EFI and SMC firmware updates); the Windows XP is a brand-new, single-disk, SP2 install disk; I've tried holding down the option key upon reboot and selecting windows start-up. I've used Parallels with no problem under 10.4.X, but recently upgraded to 10.5.2, and thought I'd try a Boot Camp installation for better access to peripherals. Any suggestions?

Hello to all and it wanted to request aid to them on this subject, days ago I acquired a Imac 24"2.4GHZ Aluminum (generation previous to the last ones sent for a month),then it is that I have years with my macbook pro and always I have used bootcamp since was beta in Tiger, so installation experience I believe that I have a little.
The problem is that in it is new machine I have partition my disc with the assistant without no problem, but when it is going to install Windows XP or Vista (the 2 I have them original) and boot the machine, it remains in gray screen and no nothing happens, reason why boot with option pressed and they leave systems both to me, followed this I select Windows and it is hoisted in the screen that nor the leader of the mouse moves.
I have made the procedure as 10 times and proven with different sizes from partition (with its respective disc repair with the DVD of Leopard and the disc assistant) and nothing.
Finally uses WinClone in my macbook pro and clone my partition of Vista Windows, recovers it in the Imac without no problem and it appears to me in startup but the same, I select Windows and there it remains. Fiirmware of the updated machine this and I am in OSX 10.5.3. I have proven everything until changes to the memories and nothing. Them request if somebody has had east problem and to most erudite of the forum I request aid to them to see if they can give me.
Beforehand a million thanks to all,

  • Xorg-server 1.6 - black screen with mouse cursor

    Hi
First of all: I'm really new to Arch, so maybe there is a real easy fix for this problem
Since upgrading to xorg-server 1.6 (and today to 1.6.1) I'm not able to get a running Desktop Environment.
Usually I am using gnome with compiz-fusion on my Geforce 4 (nvidia-96xx 96.43.11-4 driver).
When I boot my machine i see gdm and I am able to login. I can hear my login sound but I only get a black screen with a mouse cursor.
I added a new test user to my system without compiz and get the same.
I tried my old xorg.conf from 1.5, generated a new one with X -configure and tried without xorg.conf but everytime the same
Actually I'm not sure if the xorg update is responsible for this, because i did not watch the upgrade-process....
I googled this problem and was searching similar things in this froum, but I wasn't able to find something
    Here are some files
xorg.conf (i know there are some bullshit things in it, but it was workig )

I'm having a very similar issue. Sometimes, when I boot and type in startx (I'm not even a GNOME user--I use dwm and no graphical login manager), I just get a black screen. No mouse cursor, so I think X doesn't even load. It only started with the xserver 1.6 update and the update to that hasn't changed anything. What I've been doing is just rebooting until it loads normally (takes one to three times). Is anyone else having this problem?
