Imac blank screen. back light on. imac shows on TV. bad LCD?

hello, I have imac 21.5 late 09 modle A1311. this piece of garbage was working til one day started up with blank screen. we did nothing to it no changing of any parts.nothing connected to this imac. I called apple and as always they were no help at all. I took it to iphone911 they said it could be LCD or LCD connector. I don't think they know what they are doing much like Apple. I hooked up the imac to the TV with HDMI and everything showed up and was able to use it with the TV full accsess. this imac powers up and the back light (dark blue) comes on ummm not the blue u see when mac starts bthis is backlight!! after started but no video at all. could the LCD be bad even tho backlight comes on? what could it be if it's not the LCD? I'm going to buy LCD if it's but I wan't to make sure this is the fix. I put it on CL but very low offers so I want to sell it and get windows and NEVER EVER again buy anything apple makes total garbage I'm so mad spending $1500+ with no support, now thinking I could bought 3 nice laptops with winds but live and learn.

oh thank god I sold this piece of crap called imac and bought new HP win 8. nothing ever will enter my house that apple makes this is for sure.and nothing good comes out of an idiot who makes a computer in the garage after fail in fixing cars!!

  • IMac blank screen at start up, just fan whirl.

Well I've got myself a bit of a problem, my computer is usually left on all the time with the odd restart here and there, anyway it got turned off today while I was out of the house and now it's stopped working.
Simply put, after the startup chime there is nothing but a blank screen, no lights on the keyboard or monitor, none of the start up key combinations will do anything so I can't even open the disk tray to try a Tiger boot dvd.
After scanning these forums I learnt that the PMU may need resetting, so I did that, the actual pressing of the PMU didn't move it much so I hope I pressed hard enough, and turned it back on agin only to be met by that same blank screen.
So is my faithfull iMac G4 dead?
    iMac G4 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Try things in Apple doc.#106464 for your startup issue.
Also, try using Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption. Smokes link will help walk you thru it.
Let us know if Disk Utility reports any problems and what they are.
    Cheers!

  • Slate 21 Pro screen back light on when sleeping

Hi James_caI found out a couple of days ago that our service inventory had not yet been updated with the new Scalar FW revision.  I suspect that at some time you will experience the same issue...just a matter of when.  I'm sorry if I was not clear in my earlier instruction.  I should know more tomorrow about when our service inventory will be ready.  Rest assured that if you experience the issue again, the next replacement will be correct. Again, my apology for not communicating clearly.

I have Slate 21 Pro. It is awsome all in one desktop with Android system. However it has the problem with sleep mode. Say I press power button to put it into sleep mode. The light on the power button change to red from white. But at some point, could be a couple of minutes or one hour, the screen back light will turn on though the screen is still dark (nothing displays). And at this time, the light on the power button will become white. And the worst thing is it'll never go back to sleep mode once it is in this state. I used a Electric Meter to test the power comsuption. At running time (when I use it and power button light in white), it consumes aournd 26 watts. At sleep time(power button light in red), it comsumes around 5 watts. At the state of dark screen with back light on ( the problemmatic state I describe above), it comsume almost the same as running time around 24 watts. This is too bad for an Android device. Though I'm able to pay the bill, but why should we waste energy and money? I report the problem. HP sent me another one. But the same problem there. I guess it is caused by the latest OS update. HP really should fix this. Does anyone has this issue? I'm so supprised that no one report this issue.

  • IMac blank screen on bootup after os update

My iMac has a blank black screen, with only the mouse showing, and keyboard noises functioning. The problem has occured after a recent OS update to the iMac.

  • IMac blank screen shortly after login - can't reinstall/restore either

Since yesterday my iMac crashes with a blank screen (different colors, mostly blue) shortly after login. Booting in safe mode is fine though. Hardware test did not find any problems, also Windows Vista 32bit runs fine. I would restore a recent backup, but when I boot from the installation disk the screen turns white and freezes. I tried a PRAM reset and I took the power chord and everything off for several minutes. Still the same issues.
Console showed kernel panics. Please check the dump below.
Any suggestions on how to restore my iMac?

  • No startup: blank screen, power light on, fans normal speed

iMac G5 2.0GHz, 2GB RAM, 160GB HD, OSX 10.5, 17". Bought in October of 2005. Two matched Samsung 1GB RAM chips installed quite some time ago with no problems.
While it isn't the iSight model, my iMac has done the blank screen with fast spinning fan thing a few times, but it always recovers after I turn it off. Here's what happened:
iTunes is playing, I pause it using the Play/Pause button on the new wireless aluminum keyboard, it sits for a while and the screensaver comes on. I press the Play/Pause button on the keyboard again, the screensaver freezes and the fans spin up to maximum speed. I hold the power button down, it shuts off, I turn it on again and get nothing. It now powers up to a blank screen, fans at normal speed, the power light stays on, and the CD drive never makes its little startup noise. Holding the power button down does nothing, I have to pull the power cable out to turn it off. The only thing it has done differently since this happened is one time the power light didn't come on, otherwise no change. I also tried all of the different key combinations on startup (using the USB keyboard) and get no response, so no target disc or safe modes. Also, the CD drive won't accept any discs, so I can't start from the system discs.
I don't want to pay for any expensive or major repair work since I was going to get a new iMac this Fall anyway. If anybody has any clever do-it-yourself tricks I'm wide open to them. Otherwise it looks like I'll just get a hard drive enclosure kit and get all of my stuff off that way.
    Help please!

First, you may still be eligible for one of Apple's Repair extension programs also, try resetting the SMU.
    Let us know what happens,

  • Mirrored my imac temporarily to my video projector now can't get imac screen back to standard viewing (shows as if a side monitor is added)

I recently mirrored my imac to project some videos.  I now want to return my imac to regular use and standard screen presentation but find it remains in the mode as if i have an external monitor connected to it with the monitor on the right side.  My imac screen only shows roughly 2/3 of the image, as if there is another monitor connected to the right side.  I've disconnected the projector, tried turning mirroring off, searching for displays, putting the computer to sleep.  I keep getting this same visual set up.
      Thanks for any assistance.

Thank you Malcolm for the response. An excellent idea which I hadn't tried.
I actually had zapped the PRAM several times (and even reset PMU) but did not think to do it with the DVI->VGA adaptor removed, so I just tried this. Unfortunately this didn't solve it. After removing the DVI-> VGA adaptor from port 2 and zapping PRAM (twice), I now am getting an "unsupported input" message on the monitor connected to Port 1 with the DVI->VGA adaptor still removed from port 2. So if anything this state is worse.
This is very strange--because when I put the DVI adaptor back on port 2, the situation returns to where it was before as described. After a hardware reboot I have the aqua screen with missing login window again. It seems zapping the PRAM did not do it here. It also seems this DVI->VGA adaptor is definitely having an effect on the situation. Why would connecting a DVI-VGA adaptor on port two cause port one to regain function and why would removing it cause port 2 to go dead essentially?
At any rate, I am still unable to use the computer...

  • IMac Blank Screen on Startup, No Chime

    Hi,
I have a 2.0 Ghz Intel iMac (20") that had a crash during a game of Age of Empires (just about to win as well.... ). I tried to turn it back on again after a force shutdown and the hard drive whirred but there was no chime and the screen remained as black as it is when its off. The white power light on the front stays on solidly but after leaving it a few minutes, nothing happens! (Ive tried taking out all USB/Firewire devices except from the mouse and keyboard too)
Any suggestions before I take it to the nearest Genius Bar would be greatly appreciated.
    --Lee

I'm used to opening up macs and changing bits and bobs and always take the necessary steps to avoid damaging components through static or other means regardless of if manuals have the warnings or not.
Edit: I haven't opened up my iMac though (nor will I). I can guarantee I was not the cause of the problem I was referring to the old G3's and such I have lying about the house.

  • IMac blank screen & three beeps!

Since I received my iMac I have had issues with it not waking up using the Apple Bluetooth keyboard or trackpad.  As I was downloading Lion yesterday the screen went blank and the iMac started beeping three times in a row, this happened twice more during the installation process.  The only way to stop it beeping was to force a shut down by holding down the power button.  I have run Techtool Pro 5 and it says there's nothing wrong with my RAM.
Are the two incidences related or do I have a faulty Bluetooth module and a faulty graphics card or RAM?
    Please help!

  • Imac blank screen

I opened my new Imac plugged it in and hit power. The power light didn't eluminate and the screen was black but I could hear a voice on the computer. Is there anything I can do or is the screen DOA?

Contact Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you might be eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine (depends on where you're located).  BTW, the AppleCare Protection Plan's the best warranty policy available for desktop machines. Get it if you don't have it before contacting Apple.

  • Is it possible to put an iMac G5 screen into a intel iMac of the same size?

my white 17" intel imac screen is about 60% covered with the vertical line problem, ive tried openeing it
and blowing air through it, in hopes it was just some crazy dust accumulation, and smc fan control, but its getting worse by the week.
i have a g5 imac 17" with a perfect screen, but a dead HD so i dont use it,
can i get my G5  screen taken out and put into my intel?
id think it would be possible since their the same same size screen for the same type of imac
unless the the inner connections, placement etc. is different between the two.
    thanks
    -shane
heres a picture of my intel screen

    Shane B,
I have the same model iMac with the same problem screen.
It's the LCD panel that is defective,(at least in my case).
You can validate this by getting a mini DVI adapter to connect the iMac to an external screen and test it on your HDTV or on any external screen.
Get the proper adapter from Mini DVI to what you have on the external screen or TV (HDMI, DVI, VGA)
and a cable to connect it and see if the image on the external screen or TV is OK.
In my case, my iMac was sitting on a shelf for two years before I thought of trying this.
I am now using it as a media server linked to my HDTV.
I ended up opening the iMac case to disconnect the LCD so I would not have to look at the ugly defective display sitting right next to my HDTV.

  • Keyboard & screen back lights pulsate

I have a MacBook Pro 15" early 2008 running !0.5.8. Tonight the keyboard illumination began pulsating bright-dim-bright-dim. At the same time the screen display began pulsating, too, sometimes alternating with the keyboard, sometimes in unison and sometimes unconnected, it seemed. Trying to control the keyboard light with F5 & F6 keys only showed me the usual semi-circular display blacked out with a little prohibition symbol underneath (circle with a diagonal line in its center). I tried the following remedies without any result.
    rebooted
    reset PRAM
    repaired permissions
    ran Preferential Treatment
    reset SMC
Then I unchecked the automatic dimming control for both keyboard & screen. Now the keyboard continues to pulsate but at avery dim level. The F5 & F6 controls remain as before. The screen however does not pulsate. That is where I am at this point.  I suspect I may have to reinstall the OS, because there are one or two other software problems, but I'd be grateful any guidance possible on this problem.

The function keys change the range over which the level of backlight changes, Martin, but it is still varied according to the ambient lighting.
It is a tricky process in some ways. In a pitch black room, for example, you don't actually need the keys to be a as bright as you do in a room with "half light", for example, so it is not simply a question of the lights getting brighter the less light there is in the room. You will see that if you reduce the amount of light in many situations (stick your hand over the top of the screen where the sensor is, for example), that both the screen and keyboard illumination dims for this reason.
    Cheers

    3) Power light stay on as long as I again push the power button again
    4) Wifi light turn "Orange"
    5) Harddrive, and DVD drive shows sign of power-on for the whole period, even I can eject the DVD tray...
But get no display on screen, even when I connect with external screen, and fan stays off.
Can i get any help from experts out there?
    Thanks
    Sohaib

    @SohaibAfzal
Have you tried connecting an external monitor to your notebook, to see if there is a display?
Since your computer does not automatically shut down again until you press power again, it is possibly the display itself that is the problem.

    Hi
My screen seems to be very dull and I want to know if/how you adjust his.
I'm very new to Apple Macbook's and i am unable to find where to adjust the backlighting on the screen ti make it brighter.
    Please can anyone advise?
    Many thanks

The f2 key should brighten the screen. If it doesn't, try holding the fn key while pushing F2.
